The next Downtown Hollywood Artwalk will take place Saturday, August 16th from 7-10pm. During the monthly event, participating Downtown Hollywood galleries and shops stay open late, offering complimentary drinks and appetizers for visitors while hosting artwork from an array of artists who display their work on-site for the night’s special event. Don’t be surprised to hear the sounds of a harp, a harmonica or a trio of ukuleles as live music on street corners complement the event, adding magical sounds to the eclectic scene.

During July’s ArtWalk, ArtCenter 2020, located on Harrison Street, featured artist Daniel
Pontet, who, by popular demand, has become an ArtWalk staple. Pontet entertained the
on-looking crowd with his impulse art, a fusion of music and painting, accompanied by
the rhythmic beats of performers from Hollywood’s own Resurrection Drums. The
dynamic team will excite on-lookers again with fresh work on Saturday, August 16th.

This month’s upcoming Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk features many exciting artists
including Victor- Hugo Vaca II, showing at the Cinema Paradiso Theater on Hollywood
Boulevard. Victor- Hugo Vaca II will be present and will be available to answer any
questions about his art. Internationally acclaimed artist Jose Rementeria will be featured
at the ArtsPark Gallery in Young Circle. Rementeria is best known for his work “Human
Beans,” traveling around the globe as part of the Coexistence Collection by the Museum on the Seam, Jerusalem. The artist will be present to discuss and show his new work.

Gallery 2014 will feature “Nature in Another Perspective” by Mago’z. Several artists will
be painting live in the gallery during Artwalk for visitors to watch.

“The Downtown Hollywood monthly Artwalk provides another opportunity for the
community to visit the Downtown Hollywood businesses, meet working artists and
purchase affordable artwork. This event has a great vibe and pulls in a nice crowd
including art lovers, locals and visitors who enjoy a night out,” comments Lisa Liotta,
Redevelopment & Operations Manager for the Hollywood Community Redevelopment
Agency (CRA).

The event continues to grow and is complemented by The Downtown Hollywood Mural
Project, another Hollywood CRA place-making initiative, where contemporary outdoor
murals are painted at key locations in Downtown Hollywood in an effort to enhance and
enrich the existing cultural fabric of the Downtown Hollywood community, thereby
attracting more art related activities, businesses and events. During the monthly
ArtWalk, mural artists can often be seen painting their murals live. This is a very cool
enhancement that has been noted throughout the South Florida arts community.

Heroes Unite is a program created to provide opportunities that can nurture and empower communities through mentoring, volunteering and family engagement. Heroes Unite strengthens communities by teaching them about art, culture and education. They strive to serve people in need and give them a safer and healthier life.

Heroes Unite was created in 1994. They began by supporting families from the Ronald McDonald house. Heroes Unite provided support to families that were going through a tough time caring for their terminally ill children. Heroes Unite provided therapy to siblings and parents of patients as well as engaged them in theatre productions. They also provided these services for people going through AIDS treatment. News: Related Group hosts 3 groundbreakings and 1 property launch

PRESS RELEASE
City Officials Joined The Related Group to Celebrate a Day of Milestones:
The launch of Paraiso Bayviews by Karim Rashid, and the start of construction at Paraiso Bay and Brickell Heights

The Related Group celebrated three milestones last week with groundbreakings at Brickell Heights and Paraiso Bay followed by the launch of their latest project, Paraiso Bayviews with Karim Rashid. Hundreds of VIP brokers attended the day’s events across Miami, and those involved in preconstruction sales took home more than $9 million in commission checks.

Mayor Tomas Regalado and Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, who were present at the two groundbreakings, congratulated The Related Group’s team on the new projects, which they noted are creating a 24-hour urban core in the Brickell area, and reenergizing the Edgewater neighborhood.

At Brickell Heights, located next to the two-million-square-foot development Brickell CityCentre, David Rockwell has created a sleek glass-walled lobby, glamorous amenity spaces with a private-club vibe, and lavish pool terraces. The 690 luxury residences will sit atop a 30,000-square-foot Equinox Fitness Center and SoulCycle, a state-of-the-art workout studio that will open its first Miami location at Brickell Heights.

At the launch of Paraiso Bayviews, international interior and industrial designer Karim Rashid was on hand to greet the guests. For his second project with The Related Group, Rashid has evolved his trademark colors and bold shapes for a more subdued organic design with softer hues and natural woods inspired in the Paraiso community’s garden bay front setting. Residents of Bayviews, described as the best value within the Paraiso community, will enjoy all of Paraiso’s luxury amenities including a rooftop swimming pool, tennis courts, a beach club, marina, gardens by Enzo Enea, a signature restaurant by Michael Schwartz, and more.

The Paraiso Bay property, set between Biscayne Boulevard and the Bay at NE 31st Street, is East Edgewater’s only master planned community. Celebrities who have already reserved homes there include DJ and music producer David Guetta, basketball star Manu Ginobili, and Spanish tennis legend Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario.

Notable Guests: Karim Rashid, Designer of interiors for Paraiso Bayviews, Celebrity Chef Michael Schwartz, Mayor Thomas Regalado, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, Carlos Rosso, President of the Condo Division at The Related Group, Sonia Figueroa, Senior Vice President The Related Group, Arden Karson, Senior Vice President The Related Group acquisitions

Farewell Henry Stone and Thanks for All the Funk

A note from the Publisher:

For the past 10 years, most of my time in Miami, I have had both the honor and the pleasure of working for an amazing music man, Henry Stone, owner of, amongst many others, TK Records. When I joined the company, he was in his early 80’s, having gone blind a few years earlier. My job was to help them aggregate and digitize the historic releases from his labels from the 50s, 60s, 70s, and up into the 80s. We also created new releases, about a half dozen new albums, all while he was closing in on the century mark.

In my opinion, no one has had such a profound impact on the music scene in Miami. He also had a significant impact on the music across the country, both as a hit-making distributor, and a pioneering label owner. Over the course of 60+ years, his labels released many thousands of tracks recorded right here in the Magic City. His labels contributed more to the distribution of that Caribbean Miami sound than any other, especially in the early days, and had an influence on music world-wide. He was a key influencer in R&B, Funk, Soul, and, of course, Disco.

Despite his success, he never parlayed that into being a mega-rich oligarch. He never moved off to LA or New York. He stayed right here in Miami, bringing that sound to the world. He shared that wealth and gave so many people a chance that otherwise would not have had it.

I never knew him in his heyday, but I did know his music. I grew up on that music. However, knowing him for the last 10 years of his life was very rewarding. I got to hear his stories, stories of the history of the music, over and over, until I could recite many of them better than he. I learned about the music business, and most importantly its history, direct from the source. He lived through the height of the 45, through the dominance of the album, to the debut of the CD and on into the time of digital downloads. He really saw it all. Very few people had his perspective, and he was on top of it right up to the end.

He passed away August 7, 2014, quietly. He never lost his sharp mind or wit, which was amazing. He was a great man, and all Miamians, all music lovers, owe him gratitude for all of the fantastic musicians he produced out of our city. Music would not be what it is today without his influence. It was unfortunate he did not live to see the completion of his biographical movie, but it will be released in a few months, and we are very excited about honoring his work and his life.

I am very glad to have known him. He taught me more than just about the music business, he taught me about being a good human and businessperson. His skill at working with people was second to none. Many were the times I saw him take a negative situation and turn it positive. He was generous almost to a fault and many the times I joked that he was too nice to be in the music business, but, of course, I was wrong. He really did inject so much funk and soul into this world, and for that, I am eternally thankful.

Thank you to the Miami New Times, Miami Herald and another Miami Herald for these wonderful obituary articles honoring the life of this man who made his way up from being an orphan in the Bronx to being a pillar in the music business and the community.

Below is the official press release and coming soon is the Henry Stone documentary movie, Rock Your Baby.

– James Echols
Co-Founder and Publisher, Soul Of Miami

(PS: A small sidenote: the name of this site, Soul Of Miami, was inspired by my working at Henry Stone Music and feeling all Miami Soul music.)

OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
Henry Stone was born June 3, 1921, in Bronx, New York to parents Leah Goldstein and Charles Epstein. He was raised in Washington Heights, NY. Henry passed away August 7, 2014. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, brother Allen and sister Rosamond.

Henry began playing the trumpet in his early teens while at an orphanage in Pleasanteville, NY. Henry joined the US Army in 1943, playing in a racially integrated band. Henry served in the US Army stationed at Fort Dix in New Brunswick, NJ and was discharged in 1947. He then moved to Los Angeles working on sales and promotion for early record labels.

In 1948, Henry settled in Miami, Florida, setting up his own distribution company, Seminole, and shortly afterwards the Crystal recording studio. In 1951 he recorded Ray Charles’ “St. Pete Florida Blues”, among others. In 1952 he started two record labels Rockin for blues and Glory for Gospel. In association with King Records, Stone released The Charms’ “Heart of Stone” on King’s De Luxe Records, and it became R&B chart #1 in 1954. He was instrumental in signing James Brown to King and in recording Brown’s first hit, “Please, Please, Please”.

In 1955, he established his own independent publishing companies and several record labels, including Chart and Dade, mainly recording local blues artists. In 1960, Stone cut “(Do The) Mashed Potatoes” by
“Nat Kendrick and the Swans”- actually James Brown’s backing band – for the Dade label. He also set up Tone Distribution, which became one of the most successful record distribution companies, working with Atlantic, Mowtown, Stax and many more independent labels. Stone’s distribution expertise was instrumental in spreading the music produced by those labels around the world.

While he focused on the distribution business, Stone also continued to record R&B artists. These included Betty Wright, whose “Clean UP Woman” was a major hit in 1971. Stone also set up the Glades Label, recording the million selling “Why Can’t We Live Together” by Timmy Thomas.

In 1972, Stone decided to concentrate on recording and manufacturing his own records, forming another new record company, TK Records with Steve Alaimo, based in Hialeah, Florida. In 1973, two of Stones warehouse employees, Harry Wayne “KC” Casey and Rick Finch, began collaborating on writing and performing songs. As KC and the Sunshine Band, they released a string of hits such as “Get Down Tonight, “That’s The Way I Like It” and “Shake Your Booty”, all on Stone’s TK label. At the same time, Casey and Finch wrote and produced the number one “Rock Your Baby” which was performed by George McCrae.

Stone’s companies produced numerous other hits during the 1970’s, including Beginning of the End’s “Funky Nassau”, Latimore’s “Let’s Straighten It Out”, Anita Wards “Ring My Bell”, Little Beaver’s “Party Down”, and Gwen McCrea’s “Rockin’ Chair”, Peter Brown’s “Do You Want to Get Funky With Me” and Bobby Calwell’s “What Won’t You Do For Love”.

Stone later became involved with Hot Productions in the reissue of classics on CD and recently continued reissuing R&B and dance tracks on his own label, The Legendary Henry Stone Presents… In 2004, Henry Stone was awarded the first ever Pioneer Award for the Dance Music Hall of Fame, which was presented in New York City where he received a standing ovation.

In 2006, Henry became involved with The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and started a music production program, the first of its kind, to provide professional training to the blind and visually impaired young performers, composers and sound engineers.

H2ombre is an Epic Experience

20140718_194958

H2ombre is a groundbreaking and exhilarating show that intertwines EDM, acrobatics, creative graphics, street art and good ole fashioned water into quite a majestic feast for the eyes. The performers are determined to whip the crowd up into a frenzy and unleash a boisterous, soaking wet dance party. We do not want to spoil the show so we shall keep our review short, but there are spoiler pics and videos below. If you can’t help yourself, feel free to click away.

We would recommend getting nice and “influenced” before you go to amplify your experience. H2ombre is only an hour long, but well worth the price of admission. We urge you purchase the front “seats” in the immersive stage area and wear attire that embraces the water and allows you to fully participate. You most likely will get soaked if you get close to either stages, but that is part of the fun! After the show there is an ample lounge/club/bar area to keep the party going. The herb infused alcoholic slushies were quite tasty. This show only runs through August,  so make sure you do not miss it. It is a sensationally fun and creative date idea too.

Local Hero: Ian Welsch

0158-KF2013-MotivationalEdge

Bio

Ian earned his BS, as well as Masters Degree in Education from the University of Bridgeport. Taking a position as an educator in the Miami-Dade County Public School System in 2005- 2009 taught him a great deal, and recognizing the need for additional educational resources, he started an in-home tutoring company. As the arts were being cut from classrooms, Ian saw an increasing need to leverage the arts as a motivational platform for urban youth. Increasing referrals highlighted a community-wide need and as a result, in June 2008, The Motivational Edge Inc. was formed. Ian is currently the Founder and CEO of the company

Who has been your most influential mentor?

Donna Phillips, my Advisor and a lead professor at The University of Bridgeport.

How did you get to where you are today?

Passion, perseverance, faith and the ability to ask questions helped me get to where I am today. I’ve always known I was on the right path but I certainly did not get here without help and guidance from others!

How did you get to be a community leader?

In my case, the following saying is very appropriate, “actions speak louder than words.” I have been fortunate enough to assemble a team of dedicated teaching artists, educators and professionals that care deeply for our community and the youth that reside in it. Together, we are all leaders of our community, guiding the younger generation to make more mindful decisions.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself still as the CEO of The Motivational Edge, thriving in multiple cities. I also see myself as a successful non-profit coach, impacting the lives of many people outside of my daily operations at The Motivational Edge.

What about this city inspires you?

I love that Miami is still a new and fresh city, with many cultures and ethnicities comprising the ever changing population of transplants, locals and everyone in between. I must say, the beautiful weather is also an inspiration.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

Considering that I grew up in the northeast, my favorite thing about Miami is the winter…If we can even call it that.

Miami should be…  more collaborative.

Miami could be… more than a vacation destination for many.

Miami wants to be… a highly revered city and is trying to find its way.

Miami needs… to be worrying less about excess and more about access for its citizens.

“I am an architect and visual artist. My preferable medium is acrylic and oil and I practice the style of abstract expressionism. Most of my work is done in action, although I also use studies and sketches to do my final expressions. Colors are very important in my expression’s maneuvers to create the volumes, balance and beauty in the compositions and to bring meaning to everything I do.” -Ronnie

Talk About it Tuesday: Petition against Walmart on Endangered Pine Rockland

ram-thumb-560x294

A few weeks ago the news broke that the University of Miami sold endangered pine rockland forest to a Palm Beach Gardens-based developer.  The developers planned to build a Walmart.  Leslye Jacobs, former student of the University of Miami was outraged and decided to make a petition against this called MoveOn.org.

Developers have vowed to set 40 acres out of the 88 purchased aside for a preserve, but that isn’t enough for the people of Miami.  An online petition created by activist Chris Wolverton called, thepetitionsite.com has almost 35,000 signatures fighting against the new developemental plans.  Leslye’s petition has already attracted 8,000 signatures as well.  Lesyle plans to present the petition to the Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez along with Gov. Rick Scott.

As residents of Miami, how do you feel about the plans for the development of the land?  Do you think it should all be protected or are you okay with the new plans to develop? Let us know on twitter, Tweet us at @Loop305 with the #TalkAboutitTuesday

Long Looi Lee was well on his way to becoming an opera singer when he received a scholarship to the Pratt Institute in New York. More than forty years later, Lee continues to incorporate elements of his Asian heritage in his work. Painting koi is both nostalgic and inspiring for Marcy Grosso who recalls feeding the fish in her family’s koi pond flakes of oatmeal when fish food was no longer available in Cuba. MANO is passionate about incorporating unlikely materials in his art; ordinary jute and tree trunks are transformed into extraordinary works for Allegories of the Koi Moon. My manager Melanie Masterson.. and others.

How did you get to where you are today?

I decided many years ago I wanted to work at what I was most passionate about, since making that decision,
I have been following along a path.. which leads up until now.

How did you get to be a community leader?

I don’t know the answer to this.
I try to do a good job and help out when I can.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully a bit farther down that path!

What about this city inspires you?

Miami’s many contradictions. The people of this city, and the music they brought with them.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

Our lush tropical flora and fauna.

Miami should be… trying to preserve more of it’s classic buildings.

Mastering Your Mental Experience Retreat

Many people in the world have a belief in a Supreme Deity. The desire for the divine and the promises it holds for many involves a large divergence in neurological processes and behaviors from ones upbringing or surrounding environment. Many people will adhere to particular doctrines, prayers, supplications and other religious practices; others have a strong sense that they are part of a greater universal experience. However, no matter what the experience; all religious and spiritual paths are mediated by the brain. This one day retreat was created to help enhance your thoughts through the understanding of how the mind works and how you can master it; your mentality can create your reality.

7AM — Breakfast

* Fruits and juices made to awaken/brighten spirit and energize the mind, along with a serving of banana, dates & nuts smoothie. Coconut water at leasure throughout the day.

* BANANA – The vitamins, minerals and amino acids in bananas play a role in keeping your brain functioning at its optimal level. Bananas help overcome depression due to high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin — the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter. Bananas supply potassium to the brain, helping to keep oxygen levels normalized and also promoting strong signals between cells.

* NUTS – Any type of nut or seed you can think of, are good for your brain. Nuts and seeds are full of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids, as well as folate, vitamin E, and vitamin B6. All of these nutrients allow you to think more clearly. They also help you think more positively, because Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids work as natural antidepressants. Some seeds and nuts are also full of thiamine and magnesium, which are great for memory, cognitive function, and brain nourishment.

* DATES – Dates contain a brain booster. Each little date contains over two milligrams of choline, a B vitamin that’s a component in acetylcholine, the memory neurotransmitter. Higher choline intake is associated with better memory and learning, making it a key nutrient for children and older adults at risk for Alzheimer’s.

* PURE COCONUT WATER – Helps Keep You Hydrated . Coconut supports immune system function by helping the body to defend itself against a slew of viruses and bacteria. Its greatest role supports brain function, keeping it healthy and thriving into our golden years. The coconut tree, coconut palm is the Tree of Life. and with good reason. The best water to drink is pure coconut water never processed. It is an excellent, super hydrating alternative to water because of its high electrolyte content, the minerals vital for bodily functions such as muscle movement, brain operation and nerve transmission.

8AM — Guided Meditation – Morning Salutation

Guided meditations help you to achieve a state of deep inner stillness, so that your mind can be cleared of clutter and unwanted thoughts, and then filled with vivid visualization experiences that effect positive personal changes.

8:30AM — Morning Yoga by Fabienne Claude
A certified and insured yoga instructor; Goal is to guide people in a powerful stress relief practice using graceful flows and attention to breath; the release of mind clutter through guided intention settings. Will lead individuals towards a degree level of physical endurance while implying mind and stress healing techniques through the connection of the mind, body, and spirit.

9:30AM — Energy Exchange (meet and interact with all the participants)

10AM — Demonstration and sampling of herbs and roots
EARTH FOODS BRAIN FOOD by Baba Pearsun

11AM — PART 1 – THE BRAIN, THE MIND AND SPIRITUALITY
by Neuropsychologist Dr. Jeheudi Mes Onyemachi Vuai

This will explore issues that will address the following: What is the brain? What is the mind? What is spirituality? Is there a “God spot in the brain? What is meant by “spiritual” experiences? What is the soul? These and other questions will be addressed to help individuals find answers that will promote their own personal experiences. The lecture will be composed of two distinct components as follows: Part I will cover the basics of neuroanatomy that will lay the foundation of the topic. . Part II will discuss the seven circuits of the brain and how spiritual experiences are produced by a complex network of brain networks. It will also discuss how the “mind” is produced by the brain.

Jeheudi Mes Onyemachi Vuai is adjunct professor of Counseling and School Psychology at Barry University. He works in the Division of Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury, Department of Psychological Services for the Miami-Dade Public Schools. He is both a neuropsychologist and school psychologist and holds the Diplomate in School Neuropsychology from the American Board of School Neuropsychology. He is current President of the Dade Association of School Psychologists. He is author of books “Gray Matter Matters: Reflections on Child Brain Injury and Erroneous Educational Practices” (2012); and “Misbehaving Brains: Essays on Good Children who do Bad Things in School” (in press, 2014). He has trained approximately 60 psychology students, many of whom pursued degrees in medicine and neuropsychology.

12PM — Full meal nutritional food served

12:45PM — Chi Gong – By Jonathan Moore of Lotus In Hand Therapy

Rewire your brain with Qigong. Qi Gong gives the student an inner awareness of their mental nervous system with simple, natural, and easy-to-learn exercises that have a profound effect on mental health. Breath control combined with our movements increase the sensation, and ultimately give the student control over their bodies in ways they never thought.

1:30PM — PART 2 – THE BRAIN, THE MIND AND SPIRITUALITY
by Neuropsychologist Dr. Jeheudi Mes Onyemachi Vuai

2:30PM — Chakra Healing – Mantra/Meditation/Mind Over Matter Affirmations

Meditation is a workout for your mind and spirit. Chakra healing from meditation can result in greater self-compassion and self-love, which will then allow you to push forward in the mind healing process. The ultimate goal is to raise the kundalini energy from the base of your spine out through the crown of your head. It is an amazing blast of pure white energy that channels up from the earth, shoots along your spine and connects you to the universal heavens.

3PM — Breakthrough Group Discussion

4PM — Leave with sponsored nutritional items, alkaline water, and gifts
from
Go Green Fashionista and Mother Earths Healing

Naturally alkaline water contains the alkaline minerals the body needs to combat acidity. Alkaline water contributes to an alkaline body which is as it should be. The consumption of alkaline water improves the immunity of the person and prevents a person from chronic cellular dehydration.

The chic and sophisticated eatery aims to enchant Miami palates with a lively food and drink scene, featuring an expansive menu of Belgian delights and extensive beer list, with upwards of 70 different selections!

Appelt previously served as executive chef at some of Belgium’s most esteemed restaurants, including Bistro Kosmopole, one of the most visited restaurants in Leuven, as well as Gastropub de Molen, widely recognized during Appelt’s tenure as one of the country’s best restaurant’s offering classic Belgian fare.

Photos of the Mango Festival at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden

The 22nd Annual International Mango Festival was a succulent celebration this year. The mangos of Colombia were honored and the abundant harvest could be tasted all over the park.  The festival transpired over two days and included an exquisite mango inspired brunch, yoga, children activities, lectures, cooking demonstrations, beer and wine tasting among many more events. The Edward mango, one of Miami’s sweetest and sexiest was voted as the fan favorite in the Mango Tasting Room. At the Mango Auction, Thailand’s Nam Doc Mai, one of Asia’s most sought after mangos, fetched the highest bid. In addition to the mangos, it was serene to wander through the rainforest and experience the Butterfly Conservatory. We will definitely be back next year for the 23rd installment.

Public Art Wednesday: Spotlight on Ileana Collazo

Untitled

Ileana Collazo is an extraordinary artists who is currently residing in Miami.  Born in Cuba, she has lived all over the place, including Spain, New York, Vermont and Massachusetts.  Ileana’s passion for art began when she was a child in her grandmothers garden.  She drew inspiration from the beautiful and colorful flowers that her grandmother planted.

She began her artistic journey writing poems and fiction.  Eventually her art became her paintings and she was inspired to create her “Night Gardens Collection.” Today Ileana’s art includes digital paintings, geometric excursions, bursts of abstract shapes and colors and GRAMFFITI, which she describes as the first graffiti made by a grandma, for which she was baptized.

Ileana describes her paintings as, “her gift to the world and everyone who falls in love with them.”  She explains that her artwork represents the twists, turns and bumps that we all face in life.

Today, Ileana lives in Miami with her husband Miguel, her four dogs and her one cat.  She continues to make and promote art at her Collazo Art Studio.

Check out the artwork done by Lleana: Here!

Fifty stories up, FIFTY reigns as Icon Brickell’s most exclusive lookout point: a spectacular, Asian-inflected private pool and lounge atop the hotel tower. Open Thursday through Saturday evenings, FIFTY is the ultimate downtown gathering spot for locals and guests alike to enjoy cocktails before or after dinner at Viceroy Miami’s spectacular restaurant, Eos, or as a prelude to a night on the town. Late night, the rooftop lounge plays host to an international who’s who, featuring a rotating roster of some of Miami’s top DJs and an ambiance that’s chic, sexy and quintessentially Miami.

FIFTY’s stunning interiors are layered with grained marbles and woods, Japanese woodblock-inspired prints and plants, with salt air and fresh floral blossoms scenting the sky-high atmosphere. From nearly every angle, the boundless view of Biscayne Bay below underlines FIFTY’s unparalleled perspective atop Viceroy Miami.

Talk About it Tuesday: UberX and Lyft Controversy

Lyft_uber

UberX and Lyft Services are currently illegal in Miami, but stopping them from being used may be harder than the Miami-Dade law enforcement for sees. In short UberX and Lyft are similar to hailing a cab except you can just download an app on your phone which allows you to name the location you want to be picked up and the location you want to be taken too. UberX and Lyft have a large emphasis on customer service. In their training they focus on the importance of making riders feel comfortable so they want to use the service again. An interesting thing about Uber and Lyft is that at the end of the ride the driver and passenger rate their experience in the car. Allowing for drivers to know if the passenger is inappropriate or driver, vice versa.

Though UberX and Lyft services are currently illegal, drivers don’t seem to be afraid to continue working. Caught drivers will be fined up to $2000, but the companies stated that these are just another start up cost for them. They feel confident that eventually their services will be legal.   Cab drivers are currently frustrated with these new forms of transportation, but are at a loss for a solution. In the end everyone is just trying to make some extra money. New York City and Boston, to name a few are two cities that have currently embraced the UberX and Lyft car services and it has worked out nicely for them.

As Miami residents how do you feel about the new UberX and Lyft services being legalized? Do you think it will hurt the current public transportation system, or do you think it will just allow people with more options? Let us know on twitter! Taste of the Nation South Florida Captivates

Taste of the Nation South Florida Review & Photos

Taste-of-the-Nation-37

Photographs by Paula Echevarria

South Florida (the non-confederate flag waving part of our paradise state) has been elevated into a serious “Foodie” region. While we are still anxiously awaiting our first Michelin Star, we do possess exquisite food, sexy chefs and a deeply diverse restaurant scene with an eclectic compilation of stellar dishes.

If you were unfamiliar with how fantastic our restaurants truly are then Taste of the Nation South Florida was the event to acquaint yourself with Miami’s finest. Almost 700  gastronomes showed up for this exquisite event held at the Loews Hotel. The lavish bash raised funds for Share Our Strength, an organization that aims to end childhood hunger in America. The irony of us stuffing our gluttonous faces to end hunger was not lost on us, but the event did raise almost $100K!!! With the exception of the renowned South Beach Wine and Food Fest, Taste of the Nation is the apex of culinary events in South Florida. Music Monday: The Fillmore Miami Beach

ext1

Miami New Times, “Best Of” awards for the year of 2014, recently awarded the Best Rock Club to The Fillmore. The Fillmore actually got its start back in 1950 when it was called The Miami Beach Municipal Auditorium. People flocked from all over to watch music, comedy and dance performances including Frank Sinatra, who used to be a regular at the Auditorium in its day. In the 1960s The Ed Sullivan Show, the Miss USA pageant and The Dick Clark show were all filmed at the Auditorium. In the 1970’s The Miami Beach Municipal Auditorium got a makeover and a new name when Morris Lapidus renovated it. The new Miami Beach Theatre of Performing Arts became home for touring Broadway shows such as Timbuktu, Gypsy and West Side Story! In the 1990s the theatre had more musicians performing at it, with artists such as Seal, Marc Anthony and Lenny Kravitz drawing in the crowds. In 2007 the theatre received its final makeover as it underwent a multi-million dollar renovation operated by Live Nation. The now Fillmore hosts some of the biggest names in music.

If you haven’t made it to the Fillmore yet now is your chance!

Follow this Link for the Fillmore’s concert calendar and follow them on Twitter for daily updates!

More than just an art show, more than just a networker, this is a true cultural social gathering. We use the power of the arts to bring people together to create a community greater than the sum of its parts.

Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week. Tongue and Cheek will be providing complimentary tastings and 10% off dinner after the show! The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

Art is an inspiring talking point, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community and hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing.

Tastings

Her subjects are often not placed within a context-giving background, allowing a single or combination of colors and geometric shapes to illuminate the chosen topic.

Ms. Mistor has a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Art from the University of Detroit and Marygrove College, and is the Ceramics/Sculpture teacher at a private secondary school in Miami, Florida. She is an associate artist at the Bakehouse Art Complex, also in Miami, and an artist member of the Detroit Artist’s Market. She also has membership in the NAEA (National Art Educator’s Association). Ms. Mistor’s exhibition credits include: University of Detroit, Marygrove College (Detroit, Michigan), Detroit Artist’s Market, Gallery 24 (Bal Harbour, Florida), Brockway Memorial Library (Miami Shores, Florida), Mid-Hudson Arts and Sciences (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.), One Biscayne Tower (Miami, Florida), Bakehouse Art Complex (Miami, Florida), Kavachnina Contemporary Gallery (Miami, Florida), Sculpt Miami (Art Basel satellite fair in Wynwood Arts District, Miami, Florida), Violeta’s (Coral Gables, Florida), Best Sculpture Award in the Pembroke Pines Ninth Annual Juried Competition (Pembroke Pines, Florida), the Garden Building in Miami Design District, and Miami Country Day School, where she created two permanent ceramic installations. Her work is also in a number of private collections.

Alejandro Cuadra
Alejandro is a Costa Rican born Fine Artist and Graphic Designer who is currently living in South Florida. When he moved to Florida he obtained an Associate’s Degree in Art and Art Education from the Miami-Dade College and a Bachelor in Graphic Design from Miami International University of Art and Design, but to a large degree his education is a self-taught. He is an artist who enjoys working with different media, among them: color pencil, charcoal, pen and ink, watercolor, oil, acrylic paint and photography and digital art. Alejandro currently works as a graphic designer and as a freelance artist and illustrator. His art is a mixture of dreams and surrealistic memories. Alejandro uses art to express his inner feelings through enigmatic images. Among the themes that he prefers to create are fantastic scenes, science fiction concepts, religious ideas, collages, childhood memories, figure drawing, surrealistic landscapes, and artwork of animals and nature.

sf-sh-miami-elastic-bond-pax-070113a-20130705

Bio:

Andrés Ponce is currently the producer of the Elastic Bond Band.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My parents and two good professors I had: Francisco Domingo and Roy Pritts.

How did you get to where you are today?

By doing what I love, working hard and persevering at it and having a bit of luck too ;)

How did you get to be a community leader?

By working hard on the Miami music scene with Elastic Bond and other musical collaborations. Now we get to promote and represent our local Miami community whenever we travel. I am proud to be also a leader as a stepfather and doing musical workshops with kids whenever there’s an opportunity.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see myself somewhere nice with proximity to nature, loving my family, making music and enjoying life the best that I can.

What about this city inspires you?

All the immigrants that came here pursuing their dreams and leaving past lives behind.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

Its winter, the beach and the different cultures that coexist here.

Miami should be…  a great place to live

Miami could be… more unified

Miami wants to be… real and find its own identity, but it’s challenging when corporations want to keep building casinos and Walmarts here.

Miami needs…  more arts and music programs for its people, better public transportation

Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we are covering a subject that causes many problems for artists, contract negotiation. We know that many artists have gotten ripped off at various times. Many of these situations could be avoided with just simple agreements.

Most artists have no training in legal issues and often struggle in understanding complex contracts. Many artists do things without any sort of contract, opening themselves up to fraud and theft. Come learn how to how to read a contract and create the proper language to safeguard your rights. We will break this down and make it easy for everyone!

With a renowned faculty specialized on the Russian Vaganova Method, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida welcomed dozens of young people from the United States, Poland, Germany, Spain, Venezuela, Peru and Chile who auditioned to be part of the Intensive Summer Program in Russian Classical Ballet Technique.

For 16 years, the Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, located in North Miami Beach, has been offering this important program led by Maestro Vladimir Issaev.

This year, the Summer Program’s faculty included teachers such as former prima ballerina from Boston Ballet, Larissa Ponomarenko, graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in Russia and now a teacher of the company; Yelena Zabalkanskaya, current teacher at the Vaganova Ballet Academy; Master Andrei Bossov, also a graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy, Irina Lebedeva from the Perm School in Russia; Ruzana Iremashvili, from the Nina Aniashvili Ballet of Georgia in Ukraine; local teachers Jorge Robledo (Flamenco) Emilio Solé (Music) and Maria Risolia (Pilates) are part of the current faculty of Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida.

Talk About it Tuesday: Miami Love

tumblr_m64idjlfuE1rvtrhho1_400

We all know Miami is one of the greatest places in the world, but for this weeks, Talk About it Tuesday we are going to talk about why!

Next time you’re at the beach and need to use some sunscreen you better thank the amazing city of Miami for inventing it. The first suntan lotion actually originated in Miami by pharmacist Benjamin Green. Without Miami, hot beach days would be torture.

Women rule! And who wouldn’t want to live in the only major city in the US to be founded by a woman, Julia Tuttle.

Who doesn’t like to be surrounded by beauty? With over 800 buildings, Miami houses the largest collection of Art Deco Architecture in the entire world!

Some of the best movies were filmed in Miami, “The Birdcage,” “Something About Mary,” “Goldfinger,” “Scarface,” “2 Fast 2 Furious,” “True Lies,” “Bad Boys,” “Bad Boys 2,” “Out of Sight,” and of course the classic TV show, “Miami Vice.”

Shipwrecks are never a good thing, but at least in Miami you can turn a shipwreck into a day of fun! Miami was dubbed the, “Wreck Diving Capital of the World,” with over 50 attainable wreck sites.

Who doesn’t appreciate a nice park? With over 800 parks to choose from Miami leaves its residents and guests with plenty of options.

Finally, Miami has over 15 miles of beaches, beautiful weather, and even more beautiful people.

How much do you love Miami? Tweet us at @Loop305 and tell us what your favorite thing about Miami is with the hash tag #TalkAboutitTuesday

Called “…the new Latin sound of Miami” by the Miami Herald, PALO! has become a favorite among South Florida’s live music devotees. PALO! plays a style of music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Their appeal lies in their unmatched musical energy, catchy original songs, and amazing display of impromptu virtuosity. A mix of vintage Latin rhythms and contemporary urban sounds gives PALO! their unique, infectious style.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein (producer, keyboards) asked musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Ed Calle (sax), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in a musical experiment combining Afro-Cuban music and jazz with funk beats.

PALO! currently enjoys a popular residency at Kimbaracumbara in Little Havana. They also perform at Hoy como Ayer, South Beach’s Jazid, Jazziz Bistro at the Hard Rock Casino, the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables, and other area venues. They have been featured at private events for clients such as the Kiwanis of Little Havana, Cuba Libre Block Party, Downtown Miami’s Best, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair International, and events for the City of Miami.

Currently, PALO! is completing their first studio CD, and is being featured on South Florida’s #1 Arbitron rated morning drive radio program, “El Show de Enrique y Joe” on La Kalle, 98.3.

North Shore Bandshell is at 73rd St and Collins Ave, Miami Beach. Show is from 6-9; FREE.

Planet Kitchen Food and Wellness Tour

Planet Kitchen celebrated its maiden voyage of its Planet Kitchen Healthy Organic Food, Drink and Wellness Tour, highlighting a growing trend towards healthy and sustainable living in South Florida. It also showcased local farms, markets, restaurants and businesses who make real food and drinks to heal us naturally from the inside out.

Planet-Kitchen-138

We started our tour at Trio Studio, located in between Wynwood & the Design District (Midtown) in Miami. There we had a wonderful grounding meditation to start our journey followed by  an awesome demonstration of Budokon Yoga, AcroYoga, and Aerial Yoga.   Tour participants had an opportunity to get in on the action and try out AcroYoga for themselves.  It was really beautiful to participate and watch.

Planet-Kitchen-96

Afterwards, the folks at Sambazon shared a refreshing fruit, mint and frozen acai concoction called an “acai bowl.”  This superfood charged treat is also non-GMO, Fair Trade and b-certified. We enjoyed it so much, we purchased a bottle that same week.  I’m sure it will be a permanent part of our refrigerator as we support conscious companies and healthy nutrition.  Continue reading “Planet Kitchen Food and Wellness Tour”

Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood Domino Tournament to Celebrate the Puerto Rican Tradition of the Double Six 7/27/14

Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood Domino Tournament to Celebrate the Puerto Rican Tradition of the Double Six
DOMINO TOURNAMENT Invite FINAL-page-0Sunday, July 27 from 3 pm to 6 pm
Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood
2700 N. Miami Avenue

Miami, FL

Partners with Wynwood Brewing Company which will be on site pouring brews

Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood will celebrate a Domino Tournament – “Celebrando el Doble Seis”. The cost per player will be $10. RSVP for participation is required by sending an email to natasha@jimmyzkitchen.com.

Chef Jimmy Carey recently announced the second annual Domino Tournament – Celebrando el Doble Seis – to be held at Jimmy’z Kitchen Wynwood. The Puerto Rican tradition of playing “double six” dominoes will be honored during the tournament. “We have always strived to bring back the Puerto Rican traditions to Wynwood – known as Little San Juan for its original population of Puerto Ricans. We started the Noches de Bomba y Plena which have been a great success and for the second year we are hosting a domino tournament of “double six” – the way it’s played in Puerto Rico.” commented Carey.

For the tournament, Chef Jimmy has invited his friends, and owners of Wynwood Brewing Co, Luis and “Pops” Brignoni to serve, for the first time, two of the brewery’s beers. The Brignonis, originally from Puerto Rico, are also great supporters of keeping alive the Puerto Rican traditions of Wynwood.

Named as “Best of Miami” for its Puerto Rican Mofongo, Jimmy’z Kitchen has been known for its casual and contemporary atmosphere and for fun gatherings in the plaza in front of the restaurant.

Participation in the tournament costs $10 per person but the restaurant encourages friends and family to come and cheer the participants. Prizes will be awarded to the top four players.

RSVP is required for participation at natasha@jimmyzkitchen.com. For further information please contact NataschaOS@nos-communications.com.

Local Hero: Sofy Encanto

300x300

Bio

Sofy Encanto is the lead singer and songwriter for the Miami Based band Elastic Bond.

Who has been your most influential mentor?

My mom

How did you get to where you are today?

It starts with knowing what makes you happy and following the path of your heart, then a lot of hard work, trial and error with determination, and definitely a little help from my friends…. and family. Also knowing that this is a continuous cycle.

How did you get to be a community leader?

I was never intended to be a community leader, but I do like to stand up for what I believe in, regardless of what society is trying to mold you to believe, and when you live by that principle it seems you end up living a lifestyle with substance and some people might admire that because it either takes a lot of courage or a lot of cluelessness.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I see my self in a happy place where I have made significant moral and musical contributions to my community and perhaps the world.

What about this city inspires you?

The beach, the sun and the passion of the people.

What is your favorite thing about Miami?

The Ocean and being close to my family.

Finish these sentences:

Miami should be… open 24 hours

Miami could be… open 24 hours

Miami wants to be… open 24 hours

Miami needs… more farms and recreational programs in public schools.

L’éléphant dans la Salle- (The Elephant in the Room) is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view.

Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for our own individual and collective emancipation. Viewers are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

L’elephant dans La Salle will be hosted by 2 of 1310 Gallery resident artist Niki Lopez (visual artist & designer), and Alana DaCosta, (singer/songwriter).

L’éléphant dans la Salle:

Art + Performance + Community Outreach

Brow, Niki Lopez, Alana DaCosta, Omilani , Klodi Lemoine, Gregory Dirr, Corbett Fogue, and Michael D. Colanero (of Uncommon Gallery with photo series .. Breast Cancer Awareness Body Painting Project.

Opening night performance include: Chaos Theory, DJ Onestar, Alana DaCosta, Maru, DaDa National Poetry Slam Team and Melissa ‘Moonchild’ Stokes.

Lopez and DaCosta will collaborate with a licensed therapist to facilitate a workshop called “What’s Your Elephant”, where youth and adult participants can work in a safe space to own the secrets they keep. “The obvious is oftentimes ignored and swept under the rug. Some may chose to never understand it,” says DaCosta. “Yet, we all have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable.”

“It’s about acknowledging it, owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

Lopez & DaCosta asks the public to participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Instagram to submit their unspoken truth.

The curators will also partner with local lawyers Ghenete Wright Muir, PJ Hitchins and Shenika “Nik” Harris, who are hosting “Thou Art Woman,” a poetry centered evening celebrating the diversity of women.

Community partners include: Community Partners: Drag It Out-(501c3), 2014 DaDa National Poetry Slam Team , Boys & Girls Club, and private donors.

Throughout the years, Prometeo has featured many Miami and U.S. premieres of local and international playwrights. Teatro Prometeo is currently helmed by director Joann Maria Yarrow, who took over the reins and created a Professional Acting Conservatory with the mission of providing actor training in Spanish as one could receive in English.

Summer’s in Miami can be brutal, but don’t let that hot Miami air stop you from enjoying the beautiful art this lovely city has to offer. This summer take a trip over to the Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science for the Under the Sea Underwater Exhibition.  The underwater exhibit will be open through August on Saturday’s and Sundays from 10am to 6pm.  The Patricia and Phillip Frost Museum of Science will host 26 images from 2013-2014 annual underwater photography contest, presented by The University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science.

Life Is Art  presents Art/Work Connections #21: Understanding Grants for Artist with Joshua Kingston at Eleazar Delgado Studio Tuesday, July 15, 2014. Art/Work Connections is a monthly series of seminars presented by Life Is Art featuring business professionals speaking on a variety of topics vital to the success of working artists. This month we covered  Understanding Grants for Artist.

About Joshua Kingston:
Joshua Kingston was raised in a military family, moving often and quickly learned to adapt and connect with people. He studied Theater, Music and Literature in college and has worked as a Vet Tech and a Software Developer before settling in to his true calling, writing. Always feeling the need to have more knowledge, he went back to school to obtain a Masters in Theology.

Today, he writes helps artists verbalize their art into statements and galleries develop catalog material while his passion is the challenge of grant writing for both individual artists, projects, and small/mid-sized Arts organizations.

About Eleazar Delgado Studio:
Originally conceived at our home, Eleazar Delgado Studio has always been the artist’s creative space. The idea grew into a gathering place for our friends, mostly artists in their own rights, to showcase their current work and preview concepts. We made it official in 2010 when we opened a public space in Wynwood. Today in addition to being Eleazar’s personal art studio, we host local talents and leaders who need a professional environment to showcase, educate, and enrich the community at large.

About the Art/Work Connections Program
The Art/Work Connections program is a monthly series of business seminars held at galleries and art spaces around South Florida targeted at artists and those working in the arts. Everyone is welcome and can benefit from them. Business professionals are brought in to cover a wide variety of topics including health care, financial planning, contract negotiation, copyright law, portfolio development, social media, marketing and much more.

About Life Is Art, Inc.
Life Is Art is a Florida-based 501(c)3 non-profit corporation dedicated to creating positive change in the community with the arts and culture through events and education. We give South Florida artists and civic leaders the tools to thrive and grow, while enhancing the lives of those living in our area.

A free event held at Viophilia on Saturday, July 19th 2014 for artists and creatives of all ages and mediums to come together and paint the night away. We set up the perfect environment to generate collaborative work by hanging large scale wood panels and canvases around the room and then covering the floors and walls for easy cleanup. Supply stations are set up with paints, brushes, water, palettes, and paper towels for artists to use throughout the evening.

The goal is to make connections and bonds within the creative community through synergetic expression. Throughout the evening, masters mix with amateurs, curators blend with observers and even non-artists are inspired to participate. By breaking down the individual roles of artist, spectator and consumer the environment influences the final work through a collaborative experience.
