Latin funk. Fusion. Jam band. Multicultural cocktail. Afro-Latin-Baby-Makin’-Descarga-Funk. Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. Bachaco is an international Afro-Caribbean Roots Rock band based out of Miami, Florida in the U.S. Their music successfully blends feel-good and conscious lyrics through the mix of Reggae, Dancehall and Ska with Rock, Hip-Hop and Colombian Cumbia. Their recent and much anticipated self-titled independent debut album is out now and features their hit singles “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” and “Ni Una Lagrima” Their “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” video, produced by Latin Grammy Winner video director Cesar Rodriguez, achieved rotation on MTV Tr3s and MTV Latin America. BACHACO was also selected as “Descubre & Download” Artist of the Month on the MTV Tr3s website during November 2012 where visitors downloaded the hit single “Cumbia Pa’ La Nena” completely free. That is simply the result of the band’s own diverse range of nationalities. BACHACO is a true multi-cultural experience.

Bachaco was initially conceived by Venezuelan brothers Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo, lead vocals, and Jose Morillo, bass and vocals, along with Domingo Medina on drums, also from Venezuela. The current 8-piece line up consists of: Edilberto “Eddy” Morillo on vocals, Domingo Medina on drums, Jamaican guitarist and vocalist Matthew Jacquette, Bruce McKinnon Jr., Miami-born half Colombian half Irish, on trumpet and vocals, Alexander Cruz, Puerto Rican, on trombone, Farid Cure on electric guitar, from Colombia, and Cristian “Mumbles” Rocha from Peru. Recently added to the lineup, John “JP” Guinan on SAX.

What is a Bachaco? The word Bachaco is the name given to a Leafcutter Ant in Venezuela. The same type of ant is found accross that Amazon Rainforest and in countries such as Panama, Colombia, Venezuela and Brazil. The insect is used by Venezuelan indians to create a “picante” (hot sauce). We could say Bachaco is a musical Picante.

“Bienvenidos a vivir, bienvenidos a soñar” (welcome to live, welcome to dream) our first CD, brought us a lot of learning in different aspects of our life; in a musical and a personal way. After this dream came true… what it is next: work and work. Today El Zaguán is in the process of exploration, where we have found new rhythms, new ideas, and a new road without losing our essence and the wave that represent El Zaguán, giving us as a result song that will be heard soon and that probably would be in our next work.

However, If you haven’t heard about us until now; What is El Zaguán?:

El Zaguán is a rock group that has elements of reggae, salsa, blues, pop and Rock & Roll; with a lot of COLOMBIAN touch, and with the mix of letters about our own daily experiences, it gives fun spaces to whom heard the songs and to the group; giving as a result a music “sancocho” with a lot of flavor.

The band is made up by three musicians since 2008 that have been working on other projects during the past years, specially playing cover at some Medellin bars. They are: Juan Esteban Arango as the singer, Miguel Arango as the drummer and Lucas Alvarez on the keyboards.

At the moment the band is on the pre-production for the second album with the hand of Sound Node. Drums, percussion and bass were recorded in Medellin, keyboards in Bogota and guitars and voice in London.

PALO! hits the stage with the Afro-Cuban Funk.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in many other area venues. PALO! has been featured at events such as Carnaval on the Mile, Art in the Park, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair, Arsht Center Fall for the Arts, and the Miami Music Festival.

PALO! has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida.

Their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” is available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores.

The band is comprised of seventeen professional musicians whose cumulative experience totals over five hundred years. Our members have worked with an exhaustive list of luminaries in entertainment including Frank, the Chairman of the Board. Our purpose is to facilitate the performance of our music to a new and thirsty audience.
The band’s library features over one thousand arrangements by such notables as Tommy Newsom, Don Sebesky, Buddy Rich, Doc Severinson, Count Basie, and Sam Nestico. Luis Bofill, cuban singer born in La Habana, Cuba. After graduating from the Conservatorio de Canto and the Universidad de La Habana, he launched his career in the late 70’s during the Mov. de la Nueva Trova as a member of the “Cuba Nueva” a group that played traditional Cuban music. In 1981 he won a prestigious award as a solo artist in “Todo el mundo canta” a national TV program that lead him to give performances in theatres, clubs, TV programs and tour the country. He then participated, and won, in many music and theatre festivals such as the “Enrique Mantici” song competition, the “Antonio Ma Romeu” popular music competition and the “Plaza Vieja” theatre festival.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Rose realized she had the gift of singing at a very early age.

Everyone from her mother’s side was a musician. She is the great-grand daughter of the conductor and composer CUPERTINO DE MENEZES and grand daughter of the guitar player and composer MANUEL DE MENEZES. Cupertino, also a flutist, was a band member of a “choro” group led by Callado Junior and Chiquinha Gonzaga, two of the most prominent musicians from this era. Manuel was partner – in music, adventures and “Bohemia – of the most important Brazilian composer in the early 30’s – Noel Rosa.

She started singing professionally with the OCTETO RIO ORCHESTRA performing jn the musically wealthy nightclub scene of Rio. She studied vocal technique with Graciela di Salerno, Nancy Miranda and Suely Mesquita. She also studied theory and ear training at the Instituto Vila Lobos and Centro de Instrução Musical Ian Guest.

Rose graduated with a degree in Portuguese and Literature from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. As a student, she was involved in various theatrical productions with the group “A QUEM INTERESSA.”

Rose Max performed extensively as a soloist with the vocal group AEQUALE under the direction of acclaimed-musical director ANDRÉ PROTÁSIO. Gaining interest and respect locally, she started working with a number of different bands. One of her best experiences was performing at “CLUBE DO SAMBA” (Samba Club) where she had a chance to learn with some of the big names of Brazilian music, such as Maestro Licinho, Neco, Antonio Carlos Tourinho, João Nogueira, and Roberto Ribeiro. She also started working as a session singer, recording jingles and background vocals, which led to the opportunity of backing up some of Brazil’ s most renowned singers.

Rose moved to Miami in October of 1993, where she has been continuing to grow and develop musically, and by keeping a constant performance schedule, she has become highly recognized in the Brazilian, Hispanic and American communities. She won the BRAZILIAN PRESS AWARD for the “Best Female Brazilian Singer Residing and Performing in the USA” in 1997, 1998 and 2001.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

Picadillo, a musical group from Spain, presents its debut album, Las cosas de la vida. Picadillo was formed in August, 2012, in Lavapies, Madrid, when producer Hector Aguero along with two vocalists, Rey Rodriguez and Sol Ruiz joined and began a musical experiment that launched the project. Later joined with trumpeter, percussionist, Jochi, which added the key element to the classic sound of the band. When these musicians of cuban origin came together they created a musical “Picadillo”, (originally a creole recipe), revisiting vintage cuban rhythms like the danzon, boogaloo, cha cha cha and combining with New Orleans trad Jazz, second line, soul and country. They naturally create the link from Cuba to New Orleans. With energetic live performances, they capture audiences with their son electrico. Las cosas de la vida, was recorded at DoReMix studios in Madrid and mixed and mastered by Luis Duran at PM Records en Cuba, in Nov 2012. Bricktoberfest sets out to launch the biggest Oktoberfest beer festival Brickell has ever seen. The beer festival will feature the most popular local, regional, and European craft breweries and specialty beers such as, Cigar City Brewing, Lagunitas Brewing Company, Brooklyn Brewery, Samuel Adams, Sweetwater, Shock Top, Hoegaarden to name a few. Bricktoberfest caters to wine lovers as well, partnering up with Delicato Family Vineyards (DFV) who will be providing their award winning wine. Our message and work focuses on moving away from an auto-centered mentality towards realizing a long-term vision for a city where people enjoy independence, reliability and choice around mobility.

MIAMI – MIAMI – ONE, in conjunction with PAX anniversary, will be holding a meet and greet with ONE Congressional District Leaders Betsy Skipp, Alix Gordon, Dani Bernal and Erica Bovea. Together they will be hosting a night of advocacy and action for the worlds poorest people by providing information of their current campaigns as well as volunteer opportunities – August 17, 2013 from 8:00pm-10:00pm.

From 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. there will be free entrance for the night’s festivities and all who come early will have a chance to receive ONE memorabilia. At 10 p.m. the official PAX Anniversary party starts and Xperimento & Herederos, a bilingual, multicultural band that blends world sounds take the stage.- Starting at 10:00pm until closing- $10.00.

As part of our ongoing efforts to raise public awareness about the issues of global poverty, hunger, disease and efforts to fight such problems in the world’s poorest countries, ONE Miami members take monthly actions and promote awareness building to draw attention to these issues and to engage and encourage everyone to become a champion.

Established in 2009, the Children’s Hero Awards honor community members who have shown incredible foresight and leadership in providing services and access to those youth who have suffered child abuse and neglect in Miami-Dade. This year, Family Resource Center will present three awards to prestigious leaders who have made a difference in the lives of foster children.

Harve Mogul, CEO of United Way of Miami-Dade will be honored with the Children’s Hero Award for his leadership in advancing programs that make children and families in crisis stronger, safer and more stable.

In recognition of his sentinel contribution to the child welfare system in the State of Florida, Alan Abramowitz, Executive Director of the Florida Guardian ad Litem Program, will be honored with the Children’s Advocate Award.

And Katherine W. Ezell, a Partner at the law firm of Podhurst Orseck, P.A., will be the recipient of this year’s Children’s Volunteer Award for her extraordinary volunteer efforts as a Guardian ad Litem, a pro-bono child attorney through Lawyers for Children America, and leader of Foster Care Review.
From 6:30-7:30 you can sip on a signature Children’s Hero Cocktail while you check out a one-of-a-kind silent auction called Trips, Travel & Leisure. A neighborhood is defined by the community within it, so, for one afternoon we will be inviting our neighbors to live it, love it, and eat in it. Neighborfood is a celebration of food, family, and the community we live in. We all share and love this community, so, it is only right we will be giving a portion of the proceeds to various local non-profit organizations.

Each restaurant in a neighborhood equally adds to the uniqueness and diversity of a community, which is why we are celebrating them all. On Saturday, July 27, neighbors will explore their neighborhood by sampling signature specialties at 8 different restaurants, all within walking distance.

“We started Neighborfood to rejoice and share in the things we love most: food, family, and our neighborhood,” says Dishcrawl Founder, Tracy Lee.

For Yogis: Internationally-known Ashtanga yoga instructor Kino MacGregor will lead a poolside yoga class at 10 am in the hotel’s Palm Grove. Founder of the Miami Life Center, MacGregor is one of only a few people in the United States to receive certification to teach Ashtanga Yoga from its founder, the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, who is widely-acknowledged to be the greatest Ashtanga master of the current age.

The Lee Boys are one of America’s finest African-American sacred steel ensembles. This family group consists of three brothers, Alvin Lee (guitar), Derrick Lee and Keith Lee (vocals) along with their three nephews, Roosevelt Collier (pedal steel guitar), Alvin Cordy Jr. (7-string bass) and Earl Walker (drums). Each member began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in the House of God church they attended in Perrine, FL. Here they underwent a rigorous course of training in a variety of musical instruments, including lap and pedal steel guitars. Born and raised in Miami, each of The Lee Boys grew up in the church where their father and grandfather, Rev. Robert E. Lee, was the pastor and a steel player himself.

Movies on the Plaza presents: Grease, a musical film that tells the story of two lovers, Danny and Sandy in a 1950s high school. Local boy Danny Zuko and vacationing Sandy Olsson meet at the beach and fall in love. When the summer comes to an end, Sandy, who is going back to Australia, frets that they may never meet again. After her parents decide not to return to Australia, Sandy enrolls at Rydell High School. Sandy and Danny split, reconcile, and split again amidst a pep rally, dances, drive-ins, a drag race and climactic carnival.

Movies on the Plaza is a free, family-friendly event sponsored by Brickell World Plaza each month.

Parking is free in the surface lot. Chair rentals are available.

Bring dinner. Bring snacks. Coolers are allowed, but please, no glass or bottles. Movies nights are subject to favorable weather conditions.

In partnership with Mary Brickell Village and in celebration of Miami Romance Month, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) is set to host its highly anticipated kissing contest, "Kisses in Miami," which will be attended by local celebrities.
 
Free of charge and open-to-the-public, the event will transform Mary Brickell Village into a "romance village" of sorts as five local couples are challenged to lock-lips, without separating, during more than two-hours for the chance to win an unforgettable Caribbean getaway for two and other fabulous prizes.
 
During the event, attendees will be encouraged to tweet using the #KissesinMiami hashtag as they cheer-on contestants and indulge in romance-inspired activities ranging from complimentary neck and shoulder massages provided by Massage Envy, a photo booth featuring fun props, themed game stations, live DJ, and not-to-be-missed giveaways.
 
Available until June 30th, Miami Romance Month is part of the GMCVB’s increasingly popular Temptations program, which takes a thematic focus on the best that Miami has to offer throughout the year at attractive prices.

Sailor Jerry, the iconic Spiced Rum, today announced it will partner with popular Miami watering holes Brother Jimmy’s BBQ, Sandbar Grill and Blackbird Ordinary to host a celebration to commemorate the life of Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins, the father of the old school tattooing and the inspiration behind the rum brand itself. Recognized as “Sailor Jerry Day,” June 12th is the date Collins passed away in 1973. If Collins was alive today, he would be turning 102 years old this year.

To mark the occasion, drink specials will be available on Sailor Jerry cocktails such as the Backyard Tea (Arnold Palmer with Sailor Jerry) and Sailor Moons (shot of Sailor Jerry in a Blue Moon beer) at participating locations  throughout the evening. Fans will also be invited to join a hula hoop contest at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ for a chance to win a Sailor Jerry duffle bag filled with Sailor Jerry goodies.

Born January 14th 1911, Norman Collins was a hard living, tough Navy sea dog who set up a tattoo shop in Honolulu in the 1930’s. Over the next 40 years, he carved out a unique style that would change the face of tattooing forever.  Perfecting a deftly crafted, boldly lined style that blended American design and traditions with Asiatic coloring and sensibilities, the iconic “Sailor Jerry” tattoo has become one of the most recognizable icons of Americana, representing an authentic attitude and spirit of rebellion. Collins also revolutionized the industry by advocating for regulated standards of sterilization and sanitation that are still met in modern day tattoo shops.
