Savor Tonight has partnered up with Oceanaire for a food + wine pairing event, highlighting the flavors of the season. For those who have been following us [Savor Tonight] for awhile, know about love for Oceanaire and Chef Kareem (and for those new to the group, you’ll soon find out for yourself), so we happily obliged. Did you know that he just won The Chef Showdown for the Hess Select South Beach Seafood Festival?

So, join us on Wed., Nov. 5th at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of great food, fine wine and good company. Chef Kareem will spoil us with a Harvest-themed menu, designed especially for the group — and each course will be served with a matching wine.

Cost is $60 if purchased by Sun., November 2 and $65, thereafter, if space is available. This includes the food + wine pairings, along with tax + gratuity. Remember to buy your tickets early, as our events at Oceanaire usually sell out.

The Pink Corset Project at Rik Rak Salon Boutique and Bar on Wednesday, October 22, 2014.  The Pink Corset Project in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month.   The corset is made of 100% recycled materials & symbolizes “protection” for women, designed by Luis Valenzuela. This “Art to Wear” piece will go around the globe in an effort to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.  Funds raised from the raffle will go to Badges of Courage, a local nonprofit organization, was founded to provide assistance to low income women who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and those who are in treatment.

The Miami Taste of Brickell Food & Wine Festival Presents its 5th Annual Holiday kick-off event with a special Holiday Gourmet Showcase and Brunch series. The festivities will be held at the two ball rooms of, La Scala & The Flamingo Theatre Bar within the Four Ambassadors. The event starts at 1:00 pm and ends at 8:00pm with the Brunch having two sessions between 1:00pm and 4:30pm.

This event is a very special occasion because 16 year old Lexi Alberts, daughter of Barry Alberts will be hosting the event in memory of her father who died last April in a tragic car accident. He was the Owner of Berries to Wine, Inc. He was the wine expert for Taste of Brickell and also a beloved wine aficionado, educator and hosted wine tasting events in our community to educate others.

Attendees will be able to sip wine from many wineries from across the globe and also sample gourmet food from some of world’s finest suppliers and chefs. You will also have the opportunity to purchase a ticket for a delicious brunch which will have 2 sessions.

Attendees will have an opportunity to sample, and purchase, from over 200 different food and spirits labels. Food pairings will include gourmet items of an extensive nature, chocolates, pastries and other assorted desserts for after hours. We will also have a cheese showcase with cheeses from around the world.

There will be an opportunity to shop and take your products to our Gift Basket Area where you can create and design your own Holiday gift basket to give to your clients, family and friends for the Holidays.
After the showcase shuts down we will have great entertainment and a dance floor where you can enjoy the rest of your experience at La Scala. The Expo will feature new chefs in the area, wine tastings, featuring several reserve wines that will only be available that night.

Please make sure you bid on the Silent auction which will held in La Scala there will be lots of great prizes, trips, dinners etc, great for holiday gifts.

Kicking off Friday, September 19th, 2014 6:00-7:00pm is the VIP Press Conference for the official launch of the Miami Downtown Arts District (MDAD). MDAD is a non-profit organization that serves cultural institutions and museums, galleries, local artists and studios, as well as, businesses, event venues, hotels, and restaurants that further awareness in History, Art, and Culture for the Downtown and Brickell area. MDAD aims to unify the Downtown and Brickell Arts District by providing a variety of programs that allow the community to explore the arts district, such as First Friday Downtown Art Night, or providing exposure and educational events through a variety of membership support services. A Proclamation from the Office of Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez will be presented to founding board members: Sean McCormick, Lee Ann Lester, Katy Sekeres Stallfus, & James Echols, on behalf of all Downtown cultural organizations, and indoctrinating the formation of MDAD.

From 7:00pm – Midnight, McCormick Place will transform the special event venue into a Black Box Theater. The Black Box Theater will be exhibiting award winning short films from theMIA Animation and the Miami Short Film Festival from 7:00-9:00pm, followed by a Stand-Up Comedy Show from 9:00pm-Midnight, hosted by comedian Freddy Stebbins. The exterior venue will have a the Life is Art VIP Bombay Sapphire Lounge accompanied by DJ’s, live music, Food Trucks, Wall Brawl, and performance artists. Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week. About -UOM-
UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

About Edilberto Aponte
My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. I was born in Boston, then raised mostly in Miami.I am currently in school to become an anthropologist with my main focus on shamanic studies. I chose this path because I love to learn and teach and therefore enjoy studying the original teachers; the shamans from around the world. I have been drawing,sketching, and painting my whole life. My art has always been and always will be a way for me to record the path of my thoughts and feelings at any particular point in life. My pieces are reflections of symbols and archetypes that connect us all. Creations that speak to the subconscious mind as well as the vibratory senses

About DOC IT! Detect Ovarian Cancer in Time
DOC IT’s primary mission is to help find a screening test and/or cure for ovarian cancer. Our proceeds go to medical facilities dedicated to hoping that one day soon we can create proper screening for ovarian cancer, because unfortunately pap smears and regular GYN check-ups usually do not detect it until is too late. As a matter of fact, ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death from gynecologic cancers in the United States and is the fifth leading cause of cancer death among American women.

Cocktail collection is the new “hidden” cocktail lounge located above Tobacco Road at the old upstairs room. We feature a rotating original cocktail menu, great music and a monthly showcase of a local artist. The cocktails are one of a kind and the atmosphere encourages conversation.

Miami, FL — August 25, 2014 — Ready, Set, Hike! Football season is quickly approaching and Batch Gastropub is prepping to be Brickell’s go-to bar. The friendly gastropub aims to satisfy everyone’s pallet offering breakfast and lunch and a special gridiron menu featuring game day favorites every Saturday and Sunday. Batch also features a full bar including 14 craft beers on tap, 21 in bottles, signature cocktails and an expansive wine list. Batch will have food and beverage specials during all Saturday NCAA games and Sunday/Monday football games. Batch is also taking aim at Monday Night Football and will feature aggressive specials only available on that night.

“We want to create a comfortable atmosphere for all customers”, said owner, Kevin Danilo , “Our entire concept revolves around being able to create great guest experiences across a wide demographic”

Staying true to its mantra, Batch has created an atmosphere for fans of all teams, showcasing every game on its 15 flat screen TV’s and 2 large projector screens. Batch created a specific website, www.batchmiami.com/football, which will be launching in mid August and which will allow guests to know what game will be shown on what TV and which game’s audio will be playing. Guests will be able to check the site at the start of each week, find out where in the venue their favorite team is going to be shown and call to reserve a specific tables.

“A lot of our customers mentioned it was hard finding a place to watch their hometown team so they just stayed home, so we wanted to create a way for them to comfortably watch their team at Batch.” Danilo said

Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week. Cocktail Collection is providing a complimentary welcome drink and light bites!  The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

UOM was originated in early 2007 as a multi-disciplinary project with emphasis in non- traditional, Vintage and electronic instruments, and performance technique.
-UOM- primal energy is often in direct superposition with more sophisticated forms of sound production, such as cutting edge real-time recording and looping and the use of current and vintage electronics.
This all-embracing approach has taken the project through a path of collaboration with the visual and performing arts. We have performed in Art Centers and galleries, during exhibition openings and artists performances. We have improvised music during video installations, contemporary dance performances and played in artist-designed sets.

My pieces evoke critical views of social, political and cultural issues. I journal my life’s perspectives and experiences in pencil, ink, and paint-using the canvas as an abstract mirror to reflect my mental images and convey my emotions. Established in 2009, the Children’s Hero Awards honor community members who have shown incredible foresight and leadership in providing services and support to those youth who have suffered child abuse and neglect in Miami-Dade. This year, Family Resource Center will present three awards to prestigious leaders who have made a difference in the lives of foster children.

Mr. Alberto M. Carvalho, Miami-Dade County’s Superintendent of Schools, will be this year’s recipient of the Children’s Hero Award in recognition of his provision of critical educational resources and services to children in the foster care system, including the establishment of a data sharing project between Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the local Foster Care Agencies.

In acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution as a Family Resource Center board member, as well as his ongoing commitment to the agency, Mr. Mario Trueba, CEO and President of Sabadell United Bank, N.A., will receive this year’s Children’s Sustainer Award.

And for the first time, Family Resource Center is pleased to present the Child Welfare Legacy Award. It will be bestowed upon Mr. Lawrence S. Hurwit, accomplished real estate developer and composer, for his lifetime body of work supporting children who have suffered child abuse and neglect. Notably, Mr. Hurwit created the Hurwit Children’s Emergency Shelter for those most vulnerable and in need of a safe haven.

From 6:30-7:30 you can sip on a signature Children’s Hero Cocktail while you check out a one-of-a-kind silent auction called Trips, Travel & Leisure. Batch will have food and beverage specials during all Saturday NCAA games and Sunday/Monday football games. Guests will be able to check the site at the start of each week, find out where in the venue their favorite team is going to be shown and call to reserve a specific tables.

“A lot of our customers mentioned it was hard finding a place to watch their hometown team so they just stayed home, so we wanted to create a way for them to comfortably watch their team at Batch.” Danilo said

Chilean Wine Seminar and Tasting Hosted by ProChile in Brickell

Yesterday evening, the ProChile Trade Commission in Miami hosted a Chilean Wine Seminar and tasting at the Conrad Hotel in Brickell. Chilean Winemaker Santiago Margozzini from Montgras Estates and Master Sommelier Fred Dexheimer conducted an educational presentation titled Chile: Land of Diversity and a Paradise for Viticulture. My wife and I arrived (on time) to a beautifully presented room set up to accommodate 60 or more guests interested in this stop in ProChile’s Chilean Wine Tour.

Santiago went through a slide presentation that highlighted just how diverse a country Chile really is, from the temperature to the rainfall to the geographic landscape to the soil. All of those factors have an extremely important impact on the country’s 16 wine-growing regions. And though diverse, the climate and isolation of the country is ideal for growing grapes. In addition to gentle winters and moderate summers, the lack of phylloxera, hail and bird attacks also contributes to the success of Chile’s growth in wine making over the past several decades. Twenty years ago, there were seven wine regions; today there are 16. Santiago explained that though it took some convincing, the regions are now classified in three groups based on the characteristics of the wines. That was done so wine makers could easily speak about their wines in such a way that would help promote their vineyards in a meaningful way. Those classifications are Costa, Entre Cordilleras, and Andes.

That’s when we began tasting the eight different wines in front of us, each chosen to represent the different viticulture regions of Chile. Santiago and Fred both led the tasting, speaking about the wineries and characteristics of each wine and how it was made. We started with a Sauvignon Blanc from Siegel made in the coastal area of Leyda. It was explained that the cold temperatures from the Pacific Ocean were key to growing this grape to perfection. Sauvignon Blanc is the #1 exported grape variety from Chile.

 

We were then asked to compare two different coastal Pinot Noirs from Valdivieso and Tabali. While I’m not exactly a wine expert, it was not difficult to see and taste the differences. Fred explained that one of the areas had more variations in temperature and wind than the other. In addition, the soils in the two regions are very different and impart different characteristics to the wines. So same grape but different outcomes.  Pretty cool!

Fred continued “geeking out” on soil as we tried a Cabernet Sauvignon blend from Morande, grown in the “alluvial” soil of Maipo, representative of the foothills of the Andes. We were then given a Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec blend from Viu Manent which sparked a little comparison to the Malbecs of Argentina. We were told that some of the best Malbecs in the world come from this Chilean region called the Colchagua Valley. However, these wines are very different than what you would find in neighboring Argentina as the climate and soil and age of their vines are not the same.

Finally we arrived to a wine made by Santiago, MontGras Antu Syrah. “This is the best wine of the night, hahaha,” quipped Santiago. He explained this was grown on a famous hill in the volcanic soil of Colchagua and would be classified as an Entre Cordilleras wine. My wife and I actually agreed that the sweet fruity aroma and delicious flavors made this our favorite of the evening. Also from Colchagua, we tasted a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot blend from Montes. Fred said this is a very well-known wine in the United States.

Our final wine of the seminar was another from MontGras, their Reserva Carmenere. We were told that Carmenere grapes are unique to Chile, though originally a French grape variety that was killed by phylloxera. Apparently, Chilean wine makers thought they were making Merlots though it was discovered that in fact it was a Merlot/Carmenere blend. Today, the best Carmenere wines are grown in sandy soil in a warm and sunny climate that allows the grapes to grow to a very ripe stage. This ensures a wine with round tannins and uniquely spicy characteristics. We liked this wine a lot too.

The evening then shifted to a tasting with many Chilean wineries. We tasted some additional wines and learned about some of the goals that each winery was pursuing. For some, it was just to get their name out in front of importers. We ate some cheese and fruits and hors d’oeuvres and mingled. It was an educational evening and fun to learn about one of Chile’s most important products!

Each month, Life Is Art brings the community together at our River Of Art pop-up art-in-public-places show to socialize through the power of the arts with the goal of exposing new artists, introducing new people to art appreciation, providing an inspiring space to make new connections, showcasing local businesses and charities, while providing a fun break during the work week! The night includes a complimentary welcome drink and light tastings courtesy of Batch Gastropub. The modest $10 door fee goes to support Life Is Art’s mission.

Art is an inspiring talking point, whether you like a piece or are puzzled by it, discussing it is a great way to break the ice. Culture is one of the primary elements that build community. Terry Arroyo Mulrooney
Born in Venezuela, Terry has made her home in Miami, Florida since early childhood. She is mostly self taught and her goal is to master the difficult art form of watercolor. “I have much to learn to master this medium and continue to study and grow.” Terry is exclusively working with watercolor. Her unique style has become recognizable and stands out among other watercolorists and artists. Terry studied art while in college and worked with nationally recognized artists to learn watercolor techniques and styles. Since entering the art market in 2004, she has won many Best in Shows in several prestigious Watercolor Societies and other art organizations. She has also landed many Solo Exhibitions with several galleries.

Valeria Actis
1980 – Born in Rosario, Argentina
2005 – Master degree in Architecture
2005/2007 – Worked in Eisenman Architects, NY
2005/2014 – Developed painting practice and participated on a variety of group and solo exhibitions.
2007/2014 – Founded Estudio Actis, an architecture and art firm, based in Rosario, Argentina.

Mitchell Shulman (MIOWSHU)
Miami native enjoying the outdoors and wildlife by hiking, kayaking, scuba & snorkeling. I love to sail, swim and gaze into clear waters. My photography lets me share the Earth’s natural treasures through my creations.

Dream Defenders
Dream Defenders will bring social change by training and organizing youth and students in nonviolent civil disobedience, civic engagement, and direct action while creating a sustainable network of youth and student leaders to take action and create real change in their communities. We fight the criminalization of our generation by directly confronting the sources, sponsors and supporters of it.

Overflowing cocktails, delicious brunch bites, and live music will set to tone to the launch of Batch Gastropub’s weekly brunch party.

Batch Gastropub is set to celebrate their brunch’s Grand Opening with a bang hosting foodies, cocktail specialist, and brunch connoisseurs. The themed celebration “You’re The Reason Mom Drinks” will be the perfect excuse to enjoy the best brunch in Brickell with friends & moms alike. Guests will indulge with $10 Bottomless Mimosas, Sangria, Bellinis & a delectable Brunch Menu on May 11, 2014, from 11:30 AM – 4:00 PM.

Standing by their “Quality vs. Quantity” motto, Batch Gastropub patiently perfected selections to be released May 11th, marking it the official launch of their full brunch menu.

Brunch-goers will savor the first taste of new additions, such as the Batch Hash ‘n’ Egg which features pork belly and short rib served with potato, red onion, and a sunny side up egg. Another new dish is the Belgium Waffle & Country Fried Chicken made with maple butter, powdered sugar, and sticky honey chicken served on top of a finger-liking-good Belgium waffle. Sugar feinds can turn to Homer’s Doh’nut Waffles, made with donut batter, cinnamon-sugar, and a donut glaze.

Guests may also enjoy fan favorites like the Drunken French Toast, made with Madagascar vanilla bean, sweet rum, maple syrup, and crispy bacon or Batch’s innovative Cornbread Benedict made with slow poached eggs, fresh cornbread, crispy pork belly, and ranch “hollandaise.” Other options include the Spanish Frittata, made with scrambled egg, Spanish chorizo, diced red peppers, and caramelized onion, as well as the Hanger ‘n’ Eggs, a steak dish served with sunny side up eggs and rosemary wedge potatoes.

“We pride ourselves in our food and we look forward to creating the perfect brunch experience for all ” said Owner/Operator, Kevin Danilo.

Those who are late risers will not have to compromise their lunch cravings as Batch will be serving their Margherita Pizza, Pork Belly Tacos, Batch Brisket Burger, Asian Street Chicken Sandwich, Black ‘n’ Blue Steak Sandwich, and BLT Sandwich, as well as fresh and flavorful salads.

The brunch party will feature live music by Chris Alvy from 12:00 PM – 4:00PM. Hosting a business networker within an art show is a unique way to encourage socializing. Some events include live performances and other surprises! These shows are also important fundraisers and help us continue our programs.

Jonathan Brooks
Jonathan Brooks is an award winning photographer/visual artist, whose work has been exhibited in Art Basel Miami, New York City, Amsterdam, and the United Kingdom. Brooks graduated magna cum laude with a BS degree in Advertising and Fine Art Photography from the University of Miami. He recently launched his line of Teach&Greet Bilingual Greeting Cards on CardGnome.com. He is a rare Miami native who currently writes and photographs reviews for GreatFoodList.com and is the shop owner of Jonathan Brooks Visual Arts on Etsy.com. As a 2013 top ten finalist in the RED, Carl Zeiss, Adobe , HD Video Pro and Digital Video Pro magazines’ 7th Annual Emerging Pro Still & Motion Competition, he just finished his first short film 5 SKULLS, which can be found on vimeo or youtube. He is also currently trying to fund his The True Cuba book project on Kickstarter.

I am an Artisan, and I am a maker of Alchemic Contrivances… with fanciful natures that are intriguing, fun, and a bit absurd – with a daring dash of Steampunk!
And these Contrivances, they come from what? you ask. Well, to answer that in a roundabout way, I’ll start you with a bit of my background. My interests are manifold. I had the opportunity to grow up near the Smithsonian museums and the National Gallery of Art. Visiting these was an oft loved adventure. Another adventure I love is reading: Science-fiction, history, and whatever I could pore through in the sciences.
I was fascinated by such classics as “The Time Machine,” “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea,” “Frankenstein,” and last but not least “Green Eggs and Ham.” These worlds are filled with adventure, strange devices, and many curiosities; indeed the many stories and movies of the like filled my life with imagination and creative energy.
My pieces, fabricated individually from an amalgam of both old and contemporary parts, are born from these stories. They are fashioned from a day before mass production and describe, today, a retro-futuristic style.
These days I’ll often be found in what I call my Lab tinkering, aside my Alchemist Lamp, with devices that may have been found in any of these stories.

Edwive Seme
Edwive Seme is an emerging artist in Miami who has spent most of his life drawing from the inspirations he got from cartoons. He continuously evolve his style and explore new grounds to not only grow as an artist but to also present something fresh to whoever sees his work. He wants to question the world as we know it through his artworks and therefore always tries to focus as much on the subject matter as the quality in his works. When he draws/ paints, he involves himself in the process as much as possible, so that he can become connected to everything he creates; in a way each piece of art is a piece of him. He believes this is one of the best ways to create because having a connection to his creations brings out a certain passion, which can be seen in the final product. His ultimate goal in the final product is to provide visual pleasure, mental turbulence and questioning, and emotional connection.

Net Impact
We provide service programs through Service Corp to help local sustainable businesses and nonprofits by offering our skills, expertise, and knowledge as working professionals to help organizations overcome their challenges to becoming more successful. The Service Corp programs are performed quarterly with the help of a rotating expert Panel, chosen every month from professionals in sustainability, running nonprofits, and entrepreneurs who have faced and overcame similar challenges as those we help.

Badges of Courage Foundation
Badges of Courage Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was founded by Macarena Zilveti in 2010. Her great-grandmother, grandmother, mother and aun had breast cancer and were all survivors. After her mother had a radical mastectomy, Macarena knew she had to do something to help others afflicted with this terrible disease. The Badges of Courageâ„¢ were created to help raise funds and to pay tribute to these strong and courageous women.
The foundation provides patients who have been recently diagnosed with breast cancer and in treatment, with basic living expenses such as mortgage and rent payments, child care payments, utilities, food, medical insurance premiums, and other life necessities. Our goal is to give these women tranquility and hope at a time when they need it most— when they are faced with breast cancer.

Gyu-Kaku Japanese BBQ Debuts in Miami

Do you know what the litmus test for a great Asian restaurant is?  Take a look around and see if Asians are actually eating there.  At any given time Gyu-Kaku is packed with Asians and has even obtained quite a bit of popularity with Miami locals.  This restaurant opened in Brickell this past January and is already packed, without even advertising. Gyu-Kaku  is Japanese BBQ heaven!

Japanese BBQ or Yakiniku is when there is a grill in the middle of the table that the patrons employ to cook the meat, seafood and veggies they order. It is quite fun, unique, interactive and can be very entertaining. A friend invited us there for their phenomenal lunch special and we fell in love with their Toro Beef. The lunch special includes an awesome salad, miso soup, rice and two meats for $10 or three meats for $13. The meat choices are Toro Beef, Tongue, Hanger Steak, Pork Belly, Chicken Tenders, Japanese Pork Sausage or Filet Mignon. Definitely order the Toro because it is AmazeBalls. The meat arrives raw yet marinated and you are responsible for cooking it on the grill in the middle of the table. We enjoyed lunch so much that we came back for a Chef tasting dinner to try everything. Since the menu is ridiculously extensive, we could not try it all (at least not in one sitting) but were immensely impressed with the items we sampled. We will highlight our favorites below.
