Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes rocks the house all the time every time! This classically trained New Orleans-based band delivers a smorgasbord of musical genres every time they hit the stage. JSDN defy easy categorization, their irreverent funk is cut with rock riffs, a Gypsy/Klezmer flare, a Latin tinge courtesy of a hard hitting horn section, and a sense of humor.

Joey Mugica known locally to most as “The Color Queen” proudly announces that he is ready to unveil the “Power 20” at the second annual Color-A-Cause!

This year’s Color-A-Cause will feature the Power 20 which will represent 20 of South Florida’s most influential people. Mugica will “Color Queen” the honorees by adding his unique dose of color to original photos by Julio Martinez. The colorization effects of Mugica’s images have become so recognizable that they are considered his unique art form. Proceeds of this year’s Color-A-Cause benefits non for profit Neat Stuff for Kids which provides brand new clothing to neglected and underprivileged children.

To be “Color Queened” has become quite the honor as the talented Joey Mugica coined the term as he would photograph friends and local celebrities and then manipulate the colors to bring out a very stylized version of the original. His creations became the rage amongst the public which inspired him to create an annual event, Color-A-Cause where he could showcase his work while collaborating with a great charitable foundation.

This year Mugica has been painstakingly working with photographer Julio Martinez and artist Eleazar Delgado at the very dynamic McCormick Place, run by art supporter Sean McCormick to create a backdrop, set to capture the honorees in a non-traditional manner. The location has become a central hub for artists and creative collaborators alike. The 20 honorees chosen to be “Color Queened” by Mugica include: Adora, Berta Bravo, Craig Stevens, Gerry Kelly, Hansell Leyva, James Cubby, Jammin Johnny, Jipsy, Lesley Abravanel, Malinka Max, Maryel Epps, Michael Gongora, Beth Sobol, Stacy Russell, “Trend Tracker” Tara Gilani, Tony Guerra, Rey Casas, Nikola Charpentier and Viviana Gabeiras.

Joey Mugica said, “It has been an honor for me to shoot many people throughout the years whom I respect, admire and love. This event gives me the opportunity to showcase beauty seen through my eyes while giving back to my community. “

The 2013 edition of Color-A-Cause will benefit Neat Stuff for Kids. Neat Stuff, Inc. was founded in 1995 with the mission to provide free new clothing and school uniforms to abused, neglected, and abandoned and other at-risk children. Neat Stuff was created by local community child advocate Phyllis Krug, who identified a critical need for children involved in the social services system. Today, under the direction of Executive Director Franklin Monjarrez, the organization is proud to be the only agency of its kind in South Florida proudly serving an average of 8,000 at-risk children and distributing over $.7 million worth of new clothes, school uniforms and accessories annually. The major story is not just what they do but how they do it.

Joey Mugica wishes to add a dose of color into the lives of these affected children and Color-A-Cause gives him the platform to give back to the community which has supported his dream. Mugica asks the public to join him on Wednesday May 29, 2013 in support of creativity and children.

The vision of this event is to bring the moments of the present and the past into one. Reliving the rituals, lessons and forms of expression once experienced by our ancestors. Reminding the community of the history that has brought us to where we are now.

We hope to encourage people to become aware of the significance and joy of evolution. Through remembering how far we have come, it may open our minds to understanding with today’s forms of communication, just how far we can go.

Let us spend a weekend in family resurrecting the old ways of life that have been forgotten. Finding the connection with each other and nature, where we teach our kids and ourselves to be kids again. Playing outside and stimulating the brain through art and movement, being active and conscious, remembering our inner power and becoming united with all that life offers.

The creation of this festival is to inspire us to get back to our ancestral roots of not only innocence and inner wisdom but essentially igniting our inner truth of pure love and happiness to the surface.

This memorial will involve a schedule that will consist of kids, adults and family activities such as:

Sustainability & Consciousness, Permaculture, Holistic & Natural Sciences, Arts & Crafts, Dance & Movement, Music & Voice

Photographs and Review of Cochon 555 at the Four Seasons Hotel Miami

The EDGE Steak Bar Prevails at Cochon 555

PrincePorc

If you are a swine lover, a bad Jew or just Cuban, you are going to feel like a jackass for missing Cochon 555 this past Sunday April 21st. Cochon 555 returned to Miami a second year in its five year history at the Four Seasons in Brickell. The traveling tour  gathers five chefs, five pigs, and five wineries at ten cities throughout the country promoting sustainable farming of heritage breed pigs. This gourmet exquisite tasting featured five of Miami’s most talented chefs in an epic pork cook off competition.  Each chef had to prepare dishes using an entire 200 pound heritage-pig from snout-to-tail. Both judges and attendees voted for their favorite. The competing chefs were: EDGE Steak & Bar  Aaron Brooks, Timon Balloo from Sugarcane, Jeffrey McInnis from the gem Yardbird, David Thomas of the trendy SLS’s The Bazaar and Cesar Zapata of The Federal.  Even if you’ve never been a fan of “the other white meat” with a line-up like this, this would have been the place to try it.

The well-deserving Chef Aaron Brooks of EDGE Steak & Bar destroyed the competition and took home the trophy. In addition, guests were treated to wines from five boutique family-owned wineries including Elk Cove Vineyards, Bethel Heights,Hamacher, Montinore, and Alloro. As well as tastings from Vibrant Rioja, Anchor Brewing, Eminent Domaine, Crispin Cider and the delectable Kerrygold Cheese. Their Dubliner Cheese with Irishstout and Cashel Blue Cheese were both magnificent.

Its refreshing to attend a food competition where the judges have sophisticated palates that actually concur with our own. All five chefs had awesome food but only EDGE had zero misses. Everything they served was stupendous and earned first place by a mile. Besides the food being marvelous, they were fully stocked with a full sampling of all dishes the entire night. Other teams were incessantly missing dishes and racing to get them out, some never to be restocked, to our disappointment.

Winning platterSince EDGE was beyond sensational we are going to highlight every glorious dish they graciously served up. They started with a head cheese pastelito. The pastry was the perfect balance of salty meat and sweetness. The highlight was a deliriously addictive kielbasa that was easily, the best dish of the night. The kielbasa was served on a skewer with a cube of pink lady apples, smoked maple syrup and mustard. A porchetta sandwich with shaved foot, pickles and habanero jelly was solid, as well. Next up, was a mix of clam & pork with roasted garlic, three chilis and coconut. The way all the tastes intertwined in a savory eye-opening fashion was heavenly. There was a scrumptious smoked pork rib chili with blue cheese and fried tortillas. For dessert, an appetizing hot chocolate bacon brownie with chocolate ice cream and piggy crumbs. Kudos to Chef Aaron Brooks and his team. Flawless Victory!

We adore the Yardbird. It’s one of our favorite spots. We thought its addictive corn dog (cornmeal crusted head cheese pate with adorable tiny tubes of pork rendered dijonnaise) was the second best dish of the night. The cheese and relish stuffed mortadella dog was quite tasty, as well. They were our second favorite pork outlet.

The Bazaar by far had the most inventive dishes but only two really stood out — The butifarra fabada (Spanish style sausage, cannellini beans and cilantro) and their oaxacan chocolate, smoked lard and salt chocolate bars. They were quite creative with the bourbon and bacon cotton candy and dragon’s breath pork rinds.

Sugarcane had a scrumptious dish with its sticky rice wrapped in lotus (char Sui loin, soy marinated bacon and homemade Chinese sausage). We unfortunately never got to try their Vietnamese bun with lemongrass and tea smoked pig butt, steamed pork meatball and chili pig ear but we hear it kicked major pig ass.

The Federal also had some great dishes with its Chicago hotdog (mortadella mousse, tomato jalapeño relish and spicy mustard) as well as their cracker jacks (lard popped popcorn, salty whiskey caramel, pork skin, peanuts, cocoa nibs and chiplote).

The fest was ridiculously fun. Phenomenal food, drinks and cool people all out for a great cause. Your sexy Shedonist was blowing nitrogen smoke with Deco Drive’s Louis Aguirre and Maria the Foodaholic. There was a piggy photo booth, a cocktail competition, a tartare bar manned by Todd Erickson of Haven Lounge (one of our favorite spots in Miami), a pig was butchered and auctioned off and even a game of “Pin the tail on the Piggy.” Chef Brooks will have a chance to compete against the nine other winners at the Cochon Championship in Aspen. We probably will not be able to make it there to show our support, but based on his stellar showing he has a great shot at taking home the golden pig.

The First Ever Miami Dishcrawl Was A Blast

Who doesn’t love a pub crawl? With the exception of recovering alcoholics, mormons, fanatical Muslims, or otherwise lame people– Everyone loves a fucking pub crawl. That’s why we were elated at the notion of a Dishcrawl, a group of foodies crawling to multiple restaurants to pound some damn good food. Dishcrawl made it’s Miami debut, Wednesday, April 17th where more then 30 guests bounced around Bickell sampling it’s fares.

This time we crawled through Brickell visting EDGE Steak and Bar, Vapiano, OTC (Over the Counter) and The Hoxton.

Do not miss it when this one-of-a-kind traveling culinary competition and tasting event comes home and marks a culinary milestone with its 5th Anniversary Tour.  Created to promote a national conversation around the sustainable farming of heritage-breed pigs, each event challenges five local chefs to prepare a menu from the entirety of one 200 pound family-raised heritage breed of pig, nose-to-tail.  Twenty judges (culinary luminaries) and 400 guests help decide the winning chef by voting on the "best bite of the day".  The winner will be crowned the "Prince of Porc" and will compete at Grand Cochon event at the FOOD & WINE Classic in Aspen on Sunday, June 16.

Five Competing Chefs:

Timon Balloo – Sugarcane
Jeffrey McInnis – Yardbird

Described by the Miami New Times as “the tastiest bitter-sweet candy for fans of wall-flower angst electropop,” Minimal brings an eclectic and versatile mix of indie and alternative rock with electronic flirtations embodied in drum machines, sequencers and samplers. Identified as “Latin-rock hometown heroes” by Fabrikalink.com, Minimal combines these eclectic elements to create an energetic and vigorous live performance, which has enabled them to perform along Grammy winners and internationally known artists such as Aterciopelados, Volumen Cero, Yerbabuena, and Libido.

In 2006, Minimal released their first LP titled Fotos, Cartas Y un Puñal, under the record label Fabrika Music. That same year, the band was voted “best new band” by web visitors of Batanga.com, a source for Latin music and entertainment and a leading media and content company reaching U.S. Hispanics. Minimal also traveled to New York in 2006 to participate in the Latin Alternative Music Conference (LAMC) where it presented its album in a series of concerts. While the first single, El Cubo aired on alternative radio stations across the U.S., the video for the single – directed by Vlo Erminy – received airplay on MTV3 as well as other alternative video television shows around the country.

he Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz. Professor Lynch directs his hand picked ensemble of talented young musicians and performs with them as his own group.

Among his many achievements, Brian Lynch has long been known as a great conductor of the jazz jam session. As a member of the house band at the legendary Star Cafe sessions in the New York City of the early 1980s, with Junior Cook and Harold White, and as bandleader of the late night jams at the NY Blue Note in the 1990s, Lynch absorbed the philosophy and practice of the session at its highest level. Now he brings his knowledge and love of the form to Miami and PAX.

Practitioners of all genres from traditional to contemporary, from straight ahead to Afro-Cuban and world music, will be encouraged to participate and cross pollinate, young students and established artists alike. Standards will be kept high and protocol will be firmly in place to encourage the best musical result for players and listeners in the unique and informal atmosphere of PAX!

La Santa Cecilia was recently nominated for a 2011 Latin Grammy for their hit song “La Negra” and is spreading this joy and excitement doing west coast tour support for L.A super house Ozomatli to close out the year!!!

“The music of the Los Angeles band La Santa Cecilia places the group in the late-20th-century movement of Latino musicians in California who search out a wider variety of traditions than their musical ancestors did to create a new pan-Latino aesthetic.” NPR

La Santa Cecilia exemplifies the modern-day creative hybrid. In an era and city in which Latin culture has given birth to many musical fusions, The Los Angeles based six-member band creatively combines up-tempo South American rhythms like Cumbia and Bossa Nova with the nostalgic Bolero and passionate Tango, blending in Afro-Cuban percussion, Rock with Jazzy tunes to bring about a mix that defies any particular label or musical genre. The band’s sound is accentuated by singer Marisoul’s haunting voice, which delivers its message of love, loss and heartbreak in a strong, sensual and powerful performance that leaves crowds mesmerized and women justified in La Santa’s colorful and fiesta-like live shows.

Sookie Sookie, features a group of young musicians with an admiration and respect for this style who are working to maintain and advance the spirit of the music. Influenced by much more than the sound of Grant’s group on “Alive!” Sookie, Sookie is also heavily influenced by John Scofield, Dr. Lonnie Smith, and Charlie Hunter and contains elements of Hip-Hop, Rock, and Soul. closing night as the actors create a series of scenes and performance art without the use of a script. Themes, music, and input from the audience evolve into a form of theatre that will expand the boundaries of theatre as never been seen before.

PALO! was formed in 2003 when Steve Roitstein invited fellow musicians Leslie Cartaya (vocals), Philbert Armenteros (vocals, percussion), Ed Calle (sax) and Raymer Olalde (vocals, percussion) to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO! immediately began a residency at Hoy como Ayer, one of the area’s best live music clubs. They soon started performing in many other area venues. PALO! has been featured at events such as Carnaval on the Mile, Art in the Park, the Amigos For Kids Charity, Miami Book Fair, Arsht Center Fall for the Arts, and the Miami Music Festival.

PALO! has performed for packed houses at New York’s legendary SOB’s, Ryles Jazz Club and Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in Boston, and the Chicago Folk and Roots Festival. The band often appears at venues throughout South Florida.

Their first CD, “This Is Afro-Cuban Funk” is available on gopalo.com as well as in music stores, on iTunes and other digital stores.

Outside of little bits of information picked from the internet, not much is known about Twisted Insane other than the fact that he has one of the hardest, fastest flows in the history of hip-hop. Twisted Insane started out his career homeless selling cd’s just to get money for food and a room. Eventually, Twisted Insane’s buzz grew into something out of control. Fans became more than fans, they became something of a cult. Not “just another rapper” Twisted Insane is the future and apparently those who set the standards agree. Twisted Insane’s flow and rhymes are so brutal and high-speed in addition to often being one of the fans two most common choices for fastest rapper on the planet, that Tech N9ne (the other common choice among fans for the title of ‘the fastest’), the #1 independent artist in the world recently tapped Twisted Insane for an appearance on Tech N9ne’s latest album, the #4 Billboard charting “All 6’s And 7’s” on the the song “Worldwide Choppers”. The worldwide recognition has only intensified the heat surrounding Twisted Insane and with the release of his new video, “Kick Rocks” from his forthcoming album, “The Root Of All Evil”, Twisted Insane is set to blast off into the stratosphere.

with Suenalo, Spam Allstars, and ArtOfficial
hosted by Larry Dogg

Local musicians Suenalo, Spam Allstars, and ArtOfficial organize a benefit concert for one of their own – trumpet player Ted Zimmerman. Ted walked out his front door on New Years Eve and was struck in the hand by a stray bullet. Although thankful it wasn’t more serious, it did strike him in the hand that he plays with. Needless to say he has not been able to keep up his work schedule during his recovery. Ted is also a volunteer mentor for the local organization Gogo (Guitars Over Guns) which provides musical mentorship in local schools that do not have music programs. The event on March 24th will raise funds for Ted’s hospital bills and for the Gogo Organization.

On New Year’s Eve, Ted Zimmerman was struck by a stray bullet on his front porch. The bullet (most likely from someone firing into the air) whizzed by his head and went though his first finger, shattering the bone, before lodging in his middle finger. Ted is a professional trumpet player with one of Miami’s most prominent bands, The Spam Allstars, and a highly sought after freelance musician. For the last 4 years, he has also been a mentor with the GOGO (Guitars Over Guns Organization) program, a non-profit aimed at using music to provide at-risk middle school students an alternative to the negative influences that typically dominate their environs.

While he is lucky to be alive, the bullet cost Ted more than an overnight hospital stay and endless medical bills. After an involved surgery on his hand to remove thousands of bone fragments, Ted found out that he was fortunate to not have irreversible tendon or nerve damage. The bullet however shattered the bone in his index finger (one of the three he depends on for playing the trumpet) so completely that the bone could not be fused.

He will spend the next few months hoping and waiting for enough bone callus formation to allow him to begin the long road of physical therapy – learning how to use his finger again by picking up marbles one at a time. The surgeon told Ted he can hope for 50% mobility in the knuckle of his index finger. At best, he is expected to make a full enough recovery to relearn how to play the trumpet flat-fingered.

The Brian Lynch Afro-Caribbean Jazz Artist Ensemble, conducted by Grammy Award winning trumpeter and Frost School of Music professor Brian Lynch, performs original compositions and new arrangements of modern jazz repertory in the exciting and propulsive idiom known as Latin Jazz.

Fania Records announced today the release of Elements Of Life ‘Eclipse,’ a 2-disc album from Louie Vega’s critically acclaimed live orchestral project. The album is set for a worldwide release date of March 19, 2013, and is the first new artist album Fania is releasing in years. The first disc showcases 17 brand new tracks from Elements Of Life that tastefully traverse the sounds of Afrobeat, Jazz, Latin, R&B, Gospel, Soul, Blues, Brazilian and World Music all woven with the golden touch of Grammy Award winning Producer/Artist/DJ Louie Vega. The second disc includes “EOL Soulfrito” an homage to Fania Records through interpretations and remixes of classic Fania songs performed by the Elements Of Life in a 33-minute sound collage as well as six more bonus tracks. Louie Vega connected with the legendary Fania Records after doing the smash club remix of his uncle Hector Lavoe’s “Mi Gente” track back in 2008. Louie elaborates, “At that time I started working on my new Elements Of Life album. Fania was already aware of my previous E.O.L. albums and when they got wind, they wanted to hear it. Once they heard it, they were very interested in signing it. I was in awe of the idea. Things really would go full cycle being on Fania Records.”

The URGE is a rock cover band formed in 1996. After years of covering a broad range of classic rock, the band now covers newer, more recent rock artists including, but not limited to, Nickelback, Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Stone Temple Pilots, Jet, Soundgarden and many, many more; what they like to call, “soon to be classic rock”. With hundreds of songs in their repertoire, the URGE is now focusing on a more guitar oriented, heavier and edgier rock that is more in line with today’s sound. The band provides musical entertainment for those who like to rock at all types of settings, including bar rooms, clubs of all sizes and private parties, as well as large outdoor venues such as Bayside and Taste of the Grove.

The four members of the URGE range in age from 37 to 46 and have over 100 years of combined experience playing out “live” in a variety of bands. They are not interested in “making it” in the music business (anymore!) as each of the members are dedicated to other full time careers (and families) in law, construction and computer technology; however, their love of music and “URGE” to perform keeps them together and committed to putting on a show that will keep you rockin’, rollin’ and dancin’ all night long.

DJ Le Spam & Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga. It’s not a known genre. It’s hard to describe. It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.

Spam Allstars were formed by Andrew Yeomanson, a/k/a DJ Le Spam, who was raised in Toronto, Bogota and London, and has called Miami home since 1993. He got his start by playing guitar in Haitian band Lavalas, and recording and touring with Miami based artist Nil Lara. Along the way he added to his vinyl collection, and when off the road he would DJ locally. These DJ gigs evolved into collaborations with live musicians, performing on an internet radio show, recording in his home studio, and the first of many residencies combining his samplers & DJ skills with a live band.

In 2002, Spam Allstars began a weekly residency at Hoy Como Ayer in Little Havana, which continues today. In 2003 they started monthly residencies in New York City, Gainesville, Tampa, Atlanta, and New Orleans, and playing nationally wherever people would host them. Today they perform 200+ shows, and average 56,000 miles each year.

With influences ranging from Shostakovich and Bach to Nas and Jay-Z, Black Violin breaks all the rules, blending the classical with the modern to create something rare-a sound that nobody has ever heard, but that everybody wants to feel.

Wow!!! After over THIRTY years, we are still grooving and playing hot Cuban traditional dance music to fans from all over the world. And now it’s your chance to get to know us and have some fun.

In 1973 the band relocated to Miami Florida. Their style is known as Charanga Latin Salsa music. Their infectious rhythms are the result of an instrumental composition which includes a violin, flute, trombones, piano, bass, timbales, congas, guiro and vocals.

The performance of this group is always the utlimate in professionalism due to their discipline on and off the stage. On stage, their act will capture you visually while their contagious music will make you want to move to the irrestible rhythms. This is why they are considered among the best Latin groups in the U.S..

Miami’s Suenalo has been crowned the Miami New Times’ Best of Miami Awards: Best Latin Rock Band in 2005, and most recently Best Latin Band in 2011. Even the lengthy hyphenated description the band came up with themselves falls short of the true breadth of what they represent. If Suenalo’s one of a kind fusion is hard to pinpoint, it’s only because no one’s ever done anything quite like it before.

Sergent Garcia, an original figure in the Latin Alternative and European mestizo music scenes, is returning to North America with a burning live show a new album out on the Cumbancha label titled Una y Otra Vez (Time and Time Again). A pioneer in blending the fiery Caribbean sounds of salsa, reggae, ska and dancehall with a punk attitude and continental style, Sergent Garcia’s latest musical adventure finds him traveling to Colombia to dive into what is currently the epicenter of some of the world’s hottest sounds. Una y Otra Vez marks this former rocker’s return to his independent roots and renewed creative energy.

Known to many people by different names, Sergent Garcia’s music is as diverse as he is. With a diverse ancestry which includes a French mother, African cousins, and partly Hispanic roots, Sergent Garcia gains inspiration from all cultures that shows in his music.

Sergent Garcia is known for his mix of ragamuffin and Latin Rhythms with Salsa and Reggae in Spanish and some French. Garcia has been making music since 1983, starting off experimenting in Punk, but his career really took off in 1997 with his group Los Locos del Barrio who he toured the world with. His album “Sin Fronteras” was an attempt at promoting musical and cultural tolerance through a mingling of genres.

“Fans of Manu Chao will find Sergent Garcia immediately recognizable: insistently catchy reggae and salsa rhythms, sing-song rap, horn riffs propelling the whole mix.” – Financial Times (UK)
“Now this one here has the potential of becoming one of the first big hits of 2011.” –

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Ever Wonder What Makes Members of the Opposite Sex Say and Do What They Do When it Comes to Dating, Sex, and Relationships?

“Decoding the Opposite Sex” Relationship Expert Panel & Mixer

Presented by Hearts Desire International (www.heartsdesireintl.com) on March 9th

MIAMI – March 9th, 2013– Why is it that men and women act and react so differently when it comes to dating, sex and relationships? Is asking someone out on a date via text a sign he’s not really interested? Does the fact that you’ve gone out 6 times mean you’re now in “a relationship”? Is there really such a thing as “casual sex” when it comes to women? If you have asked yourself questions like these and you want the real answers, you’ll want to attend the “Decoding the Opposite Sex” Relationship Expert Panel and Mixer on March 9th at Performing Arts Exchange (PAX).

In this co-ed event for singles and couples, men and women will have the opportunity to ask a panel of relationships experts led by Gladys Diaz (@Glad1Diaz) and Michelle Roza (@MichelleRoza1) – a.k.a. “The Love Twins” – of Heart’s Desire International (@HeartsDesireInt) all of the questions they’ve always wanted to ask about why members of the opposite sex react so differently when it comes to dating, love, communication, and, of course, sex! People will be asking questions live, as well as through social media via Twitter (#SexDecoded).

After the panel’s Q&A session, singles will have an opportunity to mix and mingle with other singles while couples can enjoy a date night. Then, at about 11:30pm, everyone will get to enjoy and dance the night away to the Afro-Cuban sounds Spam Allstars.

“Having a great relationship is not about playing games, following rules, or seeing the opposite sex as the enemy that needs to be conquered. It’s about being who you really are, because that’s who you want the other person to fall in love with,” says Heart’s Desire International co-founder, Gladys Diaz. “By understanding how the opposite sex thinks we can begin to stop taking things so personally and start making our relationships work! That’s what this event is about – learning more about ourselves and one another in a fun, casual setting so that we can have the results we want in our relationships.

Heart’s Desire International specializes in empowering women to have the lives and relationships they want and deserve. Their down-to-earth and sometimes controversial approach to dating and relationships have helped hundreds of women attract, create, and nurture the relationships of their dreams. Just ask the graduates of their programs, who swear by the effectiveness of the company’s methods in teaching them to have successful relationships. Heart’s Desire often receives wedding announcements from graduates of the singles and girlfriends programs and thank-you notes from the wives whose marriages have been transformed into passionate, peaceful, intimate relationships.

Brian Lynch

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. His talents have been recognized by top placing in the Downbeat Critics and Readers Polls (#3 Trumpet 2011 Critics Poll); highly rated reviews for his work in Downbeat, Jazziz and Jazz Times; 2005 and 2007 Grammy award nominations, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, Chamber Music America, and Meet The Composer.

Brian’s most recent CD releases as a leader include the Downbeat 5 star rated Unsung Heroes project (Hollistic MusicWorks), ConClave Vol. 2 with his Spheres Of Influence group (CrissCross), the Grammy© Award winning Simpático featuring Eddie Palmieri (ArtistShare), and Bolero Nights For Billie Holiday (Venus).

“You can lose yourself in the pure energy of his playing, but at any moment you can switch your attention to the logic and craftsmanship of his music and find multiple rewards.” NEIL TESSER, Jazziz

“Lynch demonstrates that a dedicated, knowledgeable jazzman can play a diversity of styles with telling authenticity, and make the renditions extremely appealing to both musician and neophyte…Lynch is simply first-rate.” ZAN STEWART, Downbeat

Up until a few months ago, Miami felt empty.

The shortage of Afro-Caribbean rhythms in a city built by Afro-Caribbean immigrants was downright shameful. We had become the Big Mango tree without roots.

But then Tumbao happened, and Afro-Caribbean beats found a permanent home at the intersection of I-95 and Calle Ocho.

“My partner Danny and I are part Cuban, and we wanted to celebrate our heritage,” says Roxanne Scalia, owner of PAX, New Times’ 2012 pick for Best Venue for Local Acts. “Hence Noches Tumbao.”

Join us at PAX on Wednesday, February 20th, from 4:30pm to 7pm for the grassroots #SMWRoots social media panel, followed by networking and music.

The Social Media Miami Grassroots event brings together some of Miami’s top social media influencers who have utilized social media for projects that benefit the community.

These event organizers recognize the power of social media to motivate, inspire and rally community either for charitable purposes, activism, neighborhood organizing, and/or to bring together thought leaders and audience participants in open-format conferences.

In 2012, Miami saw an explosion of grassroots events, all organized by volunteers, including Philanthrofest, IgniteMiami, Social Media Day (Mashable), HeartCamp, BarCamp, Fashionably Conscious, No Walmart in Midtown, Artists for Israel (Art Basel), LATISM education projects (Latinos in Social Media), Little Havana Tours and History Miami’s Teen Exhibit, to name a few.

The panelists’ experiences may be valuable for small businesses trying to create a more personal style of social media that resonates with community.

Award-winning writer/blogger Maria de los Angeles of Sex and the Beach will moderate the panel, which includes professionals from different fields — from attorneys to realtors, PR professionals and more — all highly skilled in utilizing social media for their own business and volunteer activities: Alex de Carvalho, James Echols, Estrellita Sibila, Blanca Stella Mejía, Natascha Otero, Janie Coffey, Grant Stern, Corinna Moebius, Liza Walton and Muhammed Malik.
