All began when the Italian blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter Frank Fois, at the age of 3, picked up the guitar. His passion for the music especially the Blues and Rock, led him to play and sing every day in search of his sound and his musical soul. Over the years, Frank developed a unique style, which is reminiscent of the great bluesmen like Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mike Bloomfield and BB King. A fundamental part of his style is his voice with which manages to excite those who hear it.

During his music tour in 2013, Fois performed in Australia, the United States and in different European Countries: Germany, France, United Kingdom, Italy.

Frank lets the instrument do all the talking as he picks and bends with pinpoint accuracy. Frank’s vocals, in step with his electrifying ability on the axe, offer the complete package for this rising star, he truly puts his emotion into his music.

After moving to New York in 2014, he performed in the best clubs of Manhattan and Long Island as B.B. King Blues Club, Terra Blues, Metropolitan and many others by also jamming with various well know musicians.

During the last years, Frank played with his band “Frank Fois Band” in Europe and in the United States which includes New Jersey, California, Florida.

The comparison is inevitable. How could it be otherwise? Tito Puente Jr. carries his father with him – imprinted on his physical being and locked in his soul. It’s in his looks, his joy, his music. No doubt, every time Tito Jr. walks on stage – he walks in his father’s footsteps.

He dances in celebration, throws his head back in pure joy and lights up the room with that oh-so-familiar smile. Tito Jr. is on a passionate mission. The younger Puente is determined to nurture the musical legacy left by his father. He refuses to let it become a distant memory; “He was just too vibrant, too exciting. There was magic in the music my father made. It made people happy, all over the world. My goal is to keep it alive, and in doing so, expose it to a whole new generation.”

Tito Jr. has found captive audiences who echo his passion. Crowds once lured to a venue by the father’s magic have returned to enjoy the son – participating once again in the high voltage celebration that takes place on stage.

Tito Jr. reveres the magnificent, lasting impact his father had on our musical lives. Audiences the world over agree there is nothing so perfect, pure or passionate than a tribute to a father from his son. “People who don’t know anything about Latin music know my father and people always, always smile when they say his name,” he confides. That is a very special gift, and it inspires and motivates me to bring his music to the world.”

There will be a cash bar and Latin food for sale. The Littman Theater is at 17011 NE 19th Ave in North Miami Beach. Tickets are FREE! Tickets are available at Parks and Rec or at the door; for more information, please call (305)948-2957 weekdays 8-5. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

September 9 at 8 PM: Among the new generation of young Afro-Peruvian Jazz musicians that are emerging on the national Jazz scene is pianist Kiki Sanchez. Born in Lima Peru, Sanchez began playing piano at age 11. Later he moved to Miami, Florida, where he continued studying piano as well as cultivating a deep love for American Jazz. His musical journey can be heard on his debut CD entitled “Dreams.” By today’s standards, “Dreams” is enveloped in a smooth Latin Jazz format with a perfect balance of Afro-Peruvian rhythm and Jazz harmonies. Sanchez’s musical interpretation is resounding, leaving the listener with admiration and much anticipation for greater things to come from a musician of such high caliber.

Kiki Sanchez has produced an instructional DVD called “The Real Latin Piano and the introduction to Afro-Peruvian Rhythms”; in it you’ll find essential musical knowledge that accentuates the building blocks of Latin music, as well as offering a fresh introspective view on various Afro-Peruvian rhythms as applied to Jazz.

With all these great musical things happening in Kiki’s life, it is no doubt that greater things are still to come for this inspiring Jazz musician. Kiki’s recent release, “Two Worlds” has been well-received, as have his three prior CD’s.

Along with a water park that includes water slides and a tube ride, the park offers a large RV campground, a tennis complex, a family golfing center and many other amenities.

About each band announced so far:

Lynyrd Skynyrd — Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 13, 2006, Lynyrd Skynyrd features a catalog of more than 60 albums, over $30 million in album sales worldwide and with “Sweet Home Alabama” having been downloaded more than two million times as a ringtone, there’s no doubt Lynyrd Skynyrd has solidified its place in rock and roll history. The band, which originally started in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1964, has been through many changes over the years but Lynyrd Skynyrd is still going strong with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase.

Cheap Trick— Rocking sold out concerts since 1973, Cheap Trick is known in Japan as “The American Beatles.” With timeless hits such as “Surrender,” “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police” and “The Flame,” Cheap Trick was inducted into Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2016. Known for their four decades of almost continuous touring, Cheap Trick has performed more than 5,000 times and just released their new album We’re All Alright! to rave reviews.

Joan Jett and the Blackhearts — Inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015, Joan Jett, who has been dubbed The Queen of Rock and Roll and Godmother of Punk, shot to fame in 1975 as a founding member of the all-girl glam punk group, The Runaways. Jett picked up her first guitar at the age of 13 and went on to record 14 studio albums, release 42 singles to date and continues to tour every year to sold out audiences. Joan Jett and the Blackhearts continue to be one of the most sought after live bands in the industry today belting our anthems such as “I Love Rock ‘n Roll” and “I Hate Myself For Loving You.” A feminist Icon throughout her entire career, in 2010 “The Runaways” biopic was released gaining Jett a new generation of fans.

Sebastian Bach — Sebastian Bach has sold more than 20 million records both as the lead singer of Skid Row and as a solo artist. He is particularly known for the
hit singles “I Remember You,” “Youth Gone Wild,” and “18 & Life,” and the albums Skid Row and Slave To The Grind, which became the first ever hard rock album to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200. Bach continues to tour worldwide and has released his autobiography titled “18 And Life on Skid Row,” stirring up the 80’s era of rock and roll in true Sebastian Bach fashion. Bach also expanded his star power, gracing the Broadway stage with starring roles in “Jekyll & Hyde,” “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “The Rocky Horror Show.”

Dokken — American metal band, Dokken, sold more than 10 million albums churning out hits such as “Alone Again,” “In My Dreams” and “Burning Like a Flame.” Don Dokken, Jon Levin, “Wild” Mick Brown and Chris McCarvill are touring together and will make their Rockfest 80’s debut this November 4.

Foghat — British rock band Foghat achieved eight gold records, one platinum and one double platinum record and continue to wow audiences with familiar favorites such as “Slow Ride” and “Fool for the City.” Current members include: drummer Roger Earl, bassist Craig MacGregor, lead guitarist Bryan Bassett and vocalist and rhythm guitarist Charlie Huhn. Last summer, Foghat released a new album, Under the Influence, which was their 17th album and first record since 2010. The album features a new version of their biggest hit “Slow Ride.” With their non-stop touring and playing to sold out audiences nationwide, Foghat have released their next record – Foghat Live at the Belly Up.

Lita Ford — Singer, songwriter, author, producer and platinum-selling artist, Lita Ford, shot to fame as a teenager in the original all-girl punk rock group, The Runaways. Ford went on to have a wildly successful solo career with Top 10 singles such as “Kiss Me Deadly” and a duet with Ozzy Osbourne, “Close My Eyes Forever.” Lita was named “The First Lady of Rock Guitar” in 2017 by Guitar Player Magazine and continues to wow audiences around the world with her impressive lead guitar shredding skills.

The Outlaws – Formed in Tampa, Fla., The Outlaws are a southern rock /country band best known for their 1975 hit “There Goes Another Love Song” and extended guitar jam “Green Grass and High Tides” from their 1975 debut album, plus their 1980 cover of the Stan Jones classic “Ghost Riders in the Sky.” Still at the top of their game and with a non-stop touring schedule, The Outlaws continue playing to sold out audiences nationwide. In 2016, the band also released a 2-CD concert set entitled, Legacy Live.

Little River Band — With 16 studio albums, four live albums, five compilation records and 35 singles, Australian rockers Little River Band formed in 1975 and sold more than 30 million records. They scored hits with “Reminiscing” and “The Night Owls.” Today, Little River Band is still rockin’ more than 40 years later with guitarist Greg Hind, Chris Marion on keys, Ryan Ricks on drums, Wayne Nelson on bass and lead vocals and Rich Herring on lead guitar.

Steelheart — Originally known as Red Alert, Steelheart has been revving up audiences since 1990. Hits such as “I’ll Never Let You Go (Angel Eyes)” and “She’s Gone” solidified Steelheart’s place in rock history. Lead vocalist Miljenko Matijevic, lead guitarist Uros Raskovski, Rev Jones on bass and Mike Humbert on percussion currently make up the band. Steelhart is releasing a new album this summer set to include a few surprise guest appearances on the recording. It will be the band’s first new album since 2008.

Jack Russell’s “Great White” — Founding member of the American hard rock band Great White, Jack Russell started touring again as “Jack Russell’s Great White” in December 2011. The band originally formed in 1977 and achieved superstardom with rock anthems such as “Once Bitten Twice Shy” and “Rock Me.” Jack Russell’s “Great White” released their latest album He Saw It Comin’ in January with hits such as “Sign of the Times” and “She Moves Me.”

Quiet Riot — Originally founded in Los Angeles in 1973 by the late guitarist Randy Rhoads and bassist Kelly Garni, Quiet Riot is a glam metal band that has undergone several periods of reinvention. “Cum on Feel the Noize,” “Bang Your Head (Metal Health)” and their cover of “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” remain some of this iconic group’s most beloved hits. Current members include: Frankie Banali on drums, Chuck Wright on bass, Alex Grossi on guitar and “American Idol” finalist James Durbin on lead vocals. Quiet Riot is dropping a new album, Road Rage, later this year with new lyrics and Durbin on vocals.

“Mr. Nice Guy” — Drawing record breaking crowds at every show and having their own Royal Caribbean Cruise line spring cruise, Mr. Nice Guy continues to be South Florida’s No. 1 Classic Rock Band. The “Mr. Nice Guy Cruise” is three years in the running and comprised of South Florida’s premier musicians. Mr. Nice Guy joins the Rockfest 80’s line-up and kicks off the day on Sunday, November 5 with members: Tommy Hall – Guitar/ Keyboards/Vocals, Jeffrey James Harris – Lead Vocal/Guitar, Maria De Crescenzo – Lead Vocals, Johnny O- Lead Vocal/Sax/Flute/ Percussion, John Quinn – Keyboards, Richie Vega – Bass, Vocals, Dave Webster – Drums.

Stellar Revival — Influenced by Incubus and with individual members aspiring to the sounds of everything from blues and country to 90’s grunge, Stellar Revival quickly found success nationally but their roots remain true to where it all began in Coral Springs. Our very own “Coral Springs Rock Stars” signed with Capitol Records and played massive music festivals around Europe. Starting 2017 with a bang, Stellar Revival was invited to open for Bon Jovi in Los Angeles at the premier L.A. Arena “The Forum.” Closing this year, Stellar Revival joins the super star line up on Saturday, November 4 at Rockfest 80‘s with Rino Cerbone – Lead Vocal, guitarists Brian Spears and Steve Morgan, bassist Mike Lowther and Andrew Koussevitzky – Drums.

Friday, August 11 at 8: Arts Garage presents the Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Jazz Band. “Dixieland” is the name given to the style of jazz performed by early New Orleans jazz musicians. The name is a reference to the “Old South,” specifically anything south of the Mason-Dixon line. Dixieland, which was developed in New Orleans, is one of the earliest styles of jazz music. The style combined earlier brass band marches, French Quadrilles, biguine, ragtime, and blues with collective, polyphonic improvisation. While instrumentation and size of bands can be very flexible, the “standard” band consists of a “front line” of trumpet (or cornet), trombone, and clarinet, with a “rhythm section” of at least two of the following instruments: guitar or banjo, string bass or tuba, piano, and drums. Not often heard today, a handful of dedicated bands keep the music alive. The Glyn Dryhurst Dixieland Band is South Florida’s leading band dedicated to this genre of music.

Al Kanovsky wrote a review of a performance of the band at the Riverwalk Jazz Brunch for “Jazz and Blues Florida.” He writes: “Have you ever sat through three sets of music and knew every title, melody and even the lyrics? It happened to me yesterday at the Riverwalk JAZZ Brunch in Ft. Lauderdale. The band was the Glyn Dryhurst Quintet….The band opened with “Perdido”. Glyn playing muted trumpet. Each took a turn and then traded 4’s. They took it out with the associated bop riff. There may be only a few of you who remember tunes like “JaDa”. My older sisters danced to that way, way back in the day….By the way, Danny Burger is no youngster, but he was the kid of this group. “Bye Bye Blackbird” has dancers up. Some young, some not so, and a couple of them of my generation…. The crowd insists on “ONE MORE!” What else but Duke and “Satin Doll”. Thanks to all the musicians who brought back all the wonderful memories of days long gone by.”

July 29 at 8: Arts Garage welcomes twice-Grammy-nominated master percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr. and The Seventh Realm. Bobby has wowed audiences around the globe for more than three decades. Widely considered one of the most important percussionists in music history, his lightning-fast hands and percussive pyrotechnics prompted the great Joe Zawinul to bestow upon him the title of “The Hand Drummer.”

Upon joining Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter’s jazz fusion group Weather Report in the 1970s, he settled in France, and continued to play with Weather Report until 1986. After the group disbanded, Thomas resettled in Miami, and shortly afterward issued a solo CD of his own music, “In the Dreamtime,” on a local label. He continued to work with Zawinul until 1994.

Besides Weather Report, Thomas played with The Zawinul Syndicate, Jaco Pastorius’ Word of Mouth band, and individual artists including Stan Getz, David Sanborn, Carlos Santana, Eddie Harris, Branford Marsalis, Herbie Mann, Ahmad Jamal and Roberto Perera. World artists he has played with include sitar player Amitava Chatterjee, and African artist Vinx. Thomas maintains an extensive discography and has issued several solo CDs on which he plays an eclectic mix of instruments including conga drums, wind instruments, guitar and the African bow harp.

What’s Your Elephant Art Exhibit 7/15/17

What’s Your Elephant Art Exhibit

1310 Gallery, Sailboat Bend Artists Loft
1310 SW 2nd Court, 110,

The Elephant in the Room is an idiom for an obvious truth that is either being ignored, or otherwise unaddressed. The purpose of this exhibit is to provide a safe place for issues and topics that are normally hidden from public view. Through visual and performance art, the artists participating in this event will share secrets and taboos, discussing openly to find solutions for individual and collective emancipation. Attendees are invited to enter the ‘Confessional’, an interactive safe space installation to share their ‘elephant’.

What’s Your Elephant will be hosted by 1310 Gallery residents Niki Lopez, visual artist, & designer, and Alana DaCosta, multidisciplinary artist.

Featured artists include: Niki Lopez, Alana DaCosta, AJ Grossman, Ana Rossi, Cheryl Brown, Macarena Zilveti, Mila Hajjar, Cesca Veo, Alex Tuzinsky, Chire Regans, Tabatha Mudra, Jose Silva, Yudelka Tavera, Zeal Harris, Artists for Black Lives Matter collective and SunServe Youth

Opening night performance featuring: Alana DaCosta, Profound Breath, We’re Weird, and Nephii Love, Bishop and Venus Rising Drum and Dance Troupe

Lopez and DaCosta will also host an interactive workshop called “What’s Your Elephant”, where participants can use creative arts in a safe space to reveal individual or societal “elephants”. “The obvious is oftentimes ignored and swept under the rug. Some people may chose to never face it,” says DaCosta, who also has a MS in Mental Health Counseling. “Yet, we all have creative energy and have the power of choice to free ourselves of whatever makes us uncomfortable. Through creative expression, many can learn to address the issue and share with others who most likely have their own elephant”.
“It’s about acknowledging it (the elephant), owning it, so that it doesn’t define you.” Says Lopez, an artist and activist with her own elephant that will be revealed at the exhibit.

As a part of this movement, Lopez & DaCosta ask that the public participate by submitting their unspoken truth AND use the hashtag #whatsyourelephant on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram.

Friday, June 30 at 8 PM: The Jean Caze Quintet Comes to Arts Garge. Winner of the 2006 International Trumpet Guild Jazz Competition, and the 2004 National Trumpet Jazz Competition, Jean Caze has emerged as one of today’s most exciting voices in jazz. Jean has performed with jazz icons such as Herbie Hancock, Najee, Arturo Sandoval , Roberta Flack, Al Jarreau, and George Duke to name a few. While still in high school, Jean performed with the legendary rock group “Chicago” live on NBC. In 2007, the Haitian-born trumpeter won second place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Jean has received abundant praise from critics, peers and jazz enthusiasts alike who have taken to Jean’s lyrical tone and tasteful ideas. He has been hailed a “True Improviser” and even compared to Miles Davis by fellow trumpet player Carl Saunders. Though his roots are solidly planted in jazz, Jean can flawlessly switch between genres. “Strong, and unexpectedly diverse, Mr. Caze confidently evoked Miles Davis on a pensive ballad, ‘Old Folks,’ and a brisk anthem, ‘My Shining Hour.’ ” -Nate Chinen, The New York Times

Miami Music Festival, an intensive training program for the next generation of classical musicians to work with mentors and gain performing experience, announces the lineup for the 2017 season from June 6 through July 30, 2017. In their fourth season, MMF will present a series of Operas as part of the MMF’s Opera Institute.

In this South Florida premiere based on the impactful book and film of the same name, acclaimed composer Jake Heggie takes on a true story that helped frame the modern debate on the death penalty in America. When a Catholic nun in New Orleans agrees to become penpals with a death-row inmate convicted of murder, her perspectives on life, death, forgiveness, and capital punishment are forever altered. With a libretto by the Tony Award-winning playwright Terrance McNally (Masterclass, Ragtime), Dead Man Walking brings one of the most powerful contemporary American operas—and one of opera’s most important contemporary composers—to South Florida.

Sunday, June 11 7:00 PM: The exciting group Palo! performs at Arts Garage. They have been nominated for a Grammy and a Latin Grammy for their album PALO! Live. They perform their own style of Tropical music they call “Afro-Cuban Funk”. Just think “funky, jazzed-up salsa”. Or better yet, listen to some of their music. The group’s unique, danceable sound blends the allure of Cuban music with funky beats and jazzy improvisation.

The New York Post proclaims “Afro-Cuban Funk is Cuban music for the new generation. And the leader of the sound is the Miami based band PALO!”

PALO! began in 2003. That’s when producer/pianist Steve Roitstein (Celia Cruz, Willy Chirino, Tito Puente, Cheo Feliciano, Oscar d’ Leon) invited his fellow musicians to join him in an improvised musical experiment combining Cuban music with funk beats. PALO!’s catchy original songs feature the sultry vocals of Latin Grammy-nominated Leslie Cartaya. The scorching percussion and vocals of Philbert Armenteros (congas) and Raymer Olalde (timbales) punctuate the performances with Cuban fire. Steve Roitstein fuses these elements with a foundation of edgy, unforgettable rhythms. The virtuosity of saxophonist Dr. Ed Calle was featured from 2003 until Dr. Calle left the band in early 2017.

The band has become a featured act in Miami’s premiere live music venues, concerts, festivals and private events. PALO! has performed for packed houses and festivals in major cities in North America, Latin America and Europe.

In June of 2016, PALO! released their third album Yo Quiero Guarachar, with the hit “Al Monte”. As of this writing the song has received over 1.3 million views on the Internet. In July 2016, the band enjoyed a successful European tour, including Paris, Luxembourg, Belgium, Amsterdam, and the prestigious Tempo Latino Festival in France, where they were named “Padrinos” of the Festival and Best New Artist, 2016.

Rolando Grooscors is a rare find on today’s jazz scene: a unique voice that strengthens and expands the jazz idiom with sensitivity, clarity, and uncompromising integrity. Rolando’s warm, expressive tones and impeccable phrasing have been delighting audiences wherever he goes.

The two-time Grammy nominee and 2011 winner was born in Caracas, Venezuela. His love for Brazil motivated him to start different projects where Brazilian music was infused with Latin and Jazz influences. Here he began to develop a Jazz/Fusion style. The experience greatly influenced Rolando’s musical development. On 14 albums as a sideman, Rolando has recorded his own CD, “Thankful,” which has garnered positive criticism and acclaim from notable jazz musicians. The band is a sextet including Piano/keyboards, Bass, Sax/wind controller, drums, and percussion. His compositions have been called “masterful” and with the attention already received, Rolando is pushing himself to have his voice defined in music, both as a sideman and as a band leader.

“Rolando’s guitar playing is on another level, Yet on this higher plane, Rolando’s soulful, creative, twelve tone improvisatory style is always completely accessible and joyous. Rolando displays a wide variety of styles and concepts with his harmonic and melodic imagery capturing the essence of musical freedom, spirit and sensual.” -Darryl Tookes

Miami Music Festival, an intensive training program for the next generation of classical musicians to work with mentors and gain performing experience, announces the lineup for the 2017 season from June 6 through July 30, 2017. In their fourth season, MMF will also present a series of Faculty Recitals as part of the MMF Piano Institute.

The Dallas Morning News calls his playing “an out-of-body experience.” Italian pianist Alessio Bax joins the MMF Piano Institute as a visiting artist for the first time, bringing a program spanning the classical era to the 20th century. Mozart borrows a tune from his own Clarinet Quintet to build a set of Six Variations, which join Alexander Scriabin’s Sonata No. 3 and Ravel’s La Valse, a ground-breaking reflection on the classical waltz. Hailed as “one of the most remarkable young pianists before the public,” Bax maintains a busy performance schedule while also serving—along with his wife, the pianist Lucille Chung—as the Johnson-Prothro Artists-in-Residence at Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts.
