Join us for an online presentation and discussion with Victor Deupi as he highlights his new book “Rada Photography: Mid-Century Architecture and Culture in South Florida and the Caribbean,” which focuses on photographers Anette and Rudi Rada’s work in Cuba and Puerto Rico.

In this first critical biography of the life and work of the Radas, two photographers working in South Florida and the Caribbean from approximately 1946 to 1975, architectural historian Deupi explores the lasting significance of the Radas in documenting the cities, buildings, landscapes, and people of the region during major social and economic transformations of the 20th century.

During the South Florida building boom of the 1950s, the Radas were highly sought-after photographers. Magazines, newspapers, and travel firms hired them to help advertise new houses and hotels, promoting the tropics and subtropics as a still-untouched paradise. In the Caribbean, Rudi Rada photographed new buildings intruding artistically and commercially into the natural environment while Annette Rada adopted a more ethnographic approach, photographing local people amid burgeoning mass tourism. Whether in South Florida, Cuba, or elsewhere in their travels, the work of the Radas captured postwar architectural evolution, as well as challenges faced by populations adapting to modernization.

Featuring a wealth of never-before-published photographs and material from several archives and collections, “Rada Photography” adds portrayals of the largely overlooked mid-century architecture of South Florida and the Caribbean to existing architectural photography in the United States and Latin America. The artistic output of Annette and Rudi Rada documents how architects and architecture in the region gave shape to architectural styles now known as Miami Modernism or Tropical Modern.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

Checkpoint Zoo documents a daring rescue led by a heroic team of zookeepers and volunteers, who risked their lives to save thousands of animals trapped in a zoo behind enemy lines in the Russian Invasion of Ukraine.

In the early days of the Russian-Ukrainian war Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city, was turned into a warzone. On one side of the battlefield was the invading Russian army, on the other side, the defending Ukrainians, and caught in between them, was a zoo called Feldman Ecopark.

More than just a zoo, Feldman Ecopark was an animal sanctuary that offered countless therapy programs to everyone from soldiers with PTSD to children with special needs. As the war ravaged on, and the shelling increased, it was clear that the bravery of the staff wouldn’t be enough to save the animals trapped inside. With the help of four young volunteers, these zookeepers would undertake a seemingly impossible mission – they would risk life and limb to evacuate over 5,000 animals, including scores of dangerous predators, and deliver them to safety.

Kids and families can now play and save the day with the heroic PAW Patrol™ pups, at the brand-new PAW Patrol: Adventure Play traveling exhibit presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare, opening September 12 at the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS). Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment. The exhibit runs through January 10, 2026.
Families will visit Adventure Bay with a group of eight rescue pups. Each pup is inspired by a real-world job like a police officer (Chase), a firefighter (Marshall), a construction worker (Rubble), a fearless pilot (Skye) and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect the community on the TV show, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude. In the process, kids learn about different jobs within a community and how those real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy.
Each of the pups has special skills, gadgets and vehicles to help them on their rescue missions. In the exhibit, families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower. They can head to Jake’s Mountain and scope things out near the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller, push buttons, and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow. Those with a taste for foodie adventures can whip up tasty treats in Porter’s Café and help Adventure Bay win the Tallest Cake Competition by stacking cake layers as high as they can. Families can also cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

The hands-on, immersive PAW Patrol: Adventure Play exhibit is a fun way for the whole family to learn bravery and heroism, with exciting stories. The whole family will learn how to combine their skills to problem-solve together and save the day.

Wanna Be Weekends in October and November: No Job Too Big!
MODS will extend the PAW Patrol: Adventure Play experience with Wanna Be Weekends, taking place every Saturday and Sunday in October and November. These themed weekends feature engaging, hands-on activities highlighting real-life community heroes and STEAM-based careers. From designing rescue vehicles and building homes to meeting local police officers, firefighters, first responders and even learning how to be a pilot, families will discover how teamwork, compassion and problem-solving shape the world around us. Thanks to support from the JetBlue Foundation, young aviators will have the chance to explore flight science and aviation careers through special programming and guest speakers.

On select days, Chewy VetCare will also host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers by practicing empathy and learning how to care for pets and other animals in need.

Each weekend brings new partners, fresh adventures and opportunities for children to imagine how they can make a difference just like the heroic pups of Adventure Bay.

PAW Patrol: Adventure Play was produced by The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis in partnership with Nickelodeon. The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is a nonprofit committed to creating extraordinary family learning experiences across the arts, sciences, and humanities that have the power to transform the lives of children and families.

PAW Patrol: Adventure Play is included with admission to MODS. For more information about the exhibit, visit mods.org/exhibit/paw-patrol-adventure-play/.

A young glassworker-in-training living with his pacifist father finds his apprenticeship upended by an impending war and the arrival of an army colonel to their seaside town.
In a town divided by duty and class, Vincent, a glassmaker’s son, and Alliz, a violinist who is the colonel’s daughter, fall in love. As their bond grows, rising tensions between their families threaten to pull them apart. Brought to life through stunning hand-drawn animation, The Glassworker is a poetic tale of first love, family, and the price of staying true to your art.

“Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated feature film ever, and as Walt Disney did with “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” Riaz creates a masterpiece on his very first try.” – Next Best Picture

Join us in the Kislak Center at the University of Miami for an engaging presentation by John J. Garcia, director of Scholarly Programs and Partnerships at the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Massachusetts. Garcia will present from his monograph-in-progress, “Without Order: Booksellers and the Failures of the Early American Book Trades, 1679-1825.”

As we approach the 200th anniversary of Freedom’s Journal (1827), the first African American periodical, Garcia will explore Black labor in the world of books across colonial North America, the British Caribbean, and the early United States. Focusing on three key bibliographical sites—the library, the printing office, and the paper mill—the presentation reimagines expressions of community, expertise, and resistance in these spaces. Free and enslaved communities played a central role in shaping early American print culture, influencing libraries, print shops, and paper mills in often surprising and overlooked ways.

Following the presentation, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

When I became deaf at the age of 23, I decided to get a cochlear implant. As I began to regain my memories of lost sounds, I asked myself: How does someone who doesn’t hear listen?
Diagnosed with bilateral sensorineural progressive hearing loss in the first grade, Charo became fully deaf by the age of 23, and received a cochlear implant against her parents’ wishes. Structured with eight distinct stories and questions, Mato’s autobiographical documentary flits between childhood stories and digressive memories, the scientific and medical explanations of hearing loss and implants, and poetic ruminations on the nature of life and language. Mato uses the film to process her own experience, interweaving home videos of her childhood with the stories and lives of people she’s interviewing for the film, and exploring the stories and lives of the d/Deaf and hard of hearing while resisting a monolithic experience. A beautiful, highly personal film processing and celebrating the experiences of those with hearing loss.

Rising musician Jeff Buckley had only released one album when he died suddenly in 1997. Now, never-before-seen footage, exclusive voice messages, and accounts from those closest to him offer a portrait of the captivating singer.
IT’S NEVER OVER: JEFF BUCKLEY, directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (DELIVER US FROM EVIL, JANIS: LITTLE GIRL BLUE, WEST OF MEMPHIS), covers the life of the rising young star with an otherworldly voice and boundary-pushing artistry, who left the ’90s music world reeling when he died suddenly, at age 30, after the release of his critically acclaimed debut album “Grace.” Told through never-before-seen footage from Buckley’s archives and intimate accounts from his mother Mary Guibert, former partners Rebecca Moore and Joan Wasser, Jeff’s former bandmates, including Michael Tighe and Parker Kindred, and luminaries like Ben Harper and Aimee Mann, IT’S NEVER OVER, JEFF BUCKLEY illuminates one of modern music’s most influential and enigmatic figures.

You are cordially invited to the best day of someone else’s life… but what if it’s also the worst day of yours? Follow Carlo as she navigates the highs and lows of attending her ex’s wedding while dealing with her own heartbreak in Island City Stage’s South Florida premiere of At the Wedding by Bryna Turner, running August 21 – September 14. Tickets are on sale now.

At the Wedding premiered off-Broadway at Lincoln Center’s Claire Tow Theater in 2022. A story of loss, love and redemption, the play focuses on the world’s loneliest (and wittiest) single woman, Carlo, as she crashes her ex-girlfriend’s wedding to a man. Through a series of flirtations, conversations, and collisions with past lovers, old enemies, new friends and perfect strangers, Carlo strives to understand whether or not heartbreak is a permanent human condition.

New York Theatre Guide called At the Wedding “Bitterly funny… wisecracking and wisdom-sharing about the unbreakable bond between love and pain… there’s a fun time to be had at this wedding.” The New York Times shared, “Fresh and trenchant… The lines are funny; Turner has a boxer’s sense of the two-punch rhythm of jokes… Authorial patience is part of what makes At the Wedding so fresh; though there are plenty of one-liners, it is not a yuk-yuk comedy foisting its laughs at you or over-signaling its intentions… Also revivifying is the way Turner reshapes the wedding genre for our time, inviting new characters to the party.”

Island City Stage’s premiere production of At the Wedding is directed by Andy Rogow. An ensemble production, the show stars Hannah Benitez, Sandi Stock, Hannah Hayley, Timothy Mark Davis, Sheena O. Murray, Elizabeth Price and Steven Guez.

At the Wedding’s Co-producers are Sue Wilder & Russell Vance, Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett, Set Sponsors are Trevor & Margie Fried and Talent Sponsor is the DC Allen & Ken Flick No Gay Hate Fund at Our Fund Foundation. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, The Maval Foundation, the Warten Foundation, OutClique and the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council.

At the Wedding closes out Island City Stage’s 2024-25 season of powerful storytelling focusing on the nature of families with sold out performances of The Fantasticks, Edward Albee’s
A Delicate Balance, Fat Ham by James Ijames and The Dying Gaul by Craig Lucas.

Individual show tickets start at $43. A Mimosa Sunday Brunch sponsored by John Fomook & Charles Lee will take place on August 31 for $55. A special Women’s Night at the Theatre sponsored by Sue Wilder will take place on September 7. The show runs for 75 minutes with no intermission.

Celebrating the artistry of food and fine wine, Catch & Cut Managing Partner and Executive Chef André Bienvenu will prepare a thoughtfully curated five-course menu, each dish expertly paired with exceptional wines from Shafer Vineyards, hand-selected by Certified Sommelier Stephan Cole. Each pour will showcase the richness of the season and the nuance of the vintage.

Guests will enjoy an exclusive experience promising a night of elevated flavors, warm hospitality and engaging conversation with Shafer Vineyard South East Director of Sales Melinda Barrett, Chef Bienvenu and Certified Sommelier Stephan Cole.

Wine Maker Elias Fernandez has been making wine at Shafer Vineyards for 40 years, forging the winery’s style of opulence, balance, and elegance. The Shafer Vineyards property has been the site of grape growing and commercial winemaking since 1880, during Napa Valley’s first boom as an American wine country. Napa’s pioneer vintners not only filled San Francisco’s wine cellars but shipped wine across the country and earned gold medals at the 1889 Paris Exposition. Shafer Vineyards takes inspiration from nearly 150 years of our passionate and gifted predecessors, who saw the rich promise of this site, cared for it meticulously, and preserved its beauty and power for future generations.

Pairing passion with every pour, the five-course menu includes:

First Course:
• Crab and Lobster Avocado Sphere – Spicy mustard sauce and red masago, paired with 2023 Chardonnay, ‘Red Shoulder Ranch,’ Napa Valley, Carneros, CA

Second Course:
• Bluefin Tuna Tartare – Pickled wakame salad with seaweed cracker and togarashi salt, paired with 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon, ‘TD-9’, Napa Valley, CA
