Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization’s State of the Region Awards 2/2/23

Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization’s State of the Region Awards

The Diplomat Beach Resort
3555 South Ocean Drive,
Hollywood, Florida, 33019
Buy Tickets
Cost: $150 per person

Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization will celebrate the impact of its significant role to plan and direct transportation and infrastructure projects throughout the region and honor those who advocate for smart planning and connectivity during the second State of the Region Annual Awards to take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, February 2, at The Diplomat Beach Resort Hollywood (3555 South Ocean Drive). WPLG-TV Local 10 Anchor Glenna Milberg and comedian Tane Danger have been tapped to co-host this prominent event, coinciding with the Safe Streets Summit, which is presented by the Broward MPO and local partners. This year’s distinguished honorees are George Platt (Lifetime Achievement Award), Gail Bulfin (Community Impact Award), Beverly and Levoyd Williams (Visionary Award), and Joseph Yesbeck (Champion Award).

Attendees to this year’s State of the Region Annual Awards will enjoy the transportation wit and wisdom of Tane Danger. A professional improv comedian with a master’s in public policy, Danger serves as director of the Westminster Town Hall Forum – the Upper Midwest’s largest and most prestigious speaker series. For more than a decade, Danger has hosted the nationally renowned civics-inspired improv comedy show, The Theater of Public Policy. At each show, he interviews newsmakers, policy-wonks, and big thinkers on issues ranging from race in education to the farm bill. Then, the show’s cast of improvisers takes everything that’s been said and turns it into entirely unscripted improv comedy theater. In his own workshops and keynote talks, Danger uses his background in improv comedy to get folks to practice communication, collaboration, and creativity differently. He’s taught improv for better communication to everyone from healthcare executives to Lutheran bishops. He is a regular contributor to Almanac, the weekly public affairs program on Twin Cities Public Television but may be best known as “the bus guy!” In 2019, Danger began working with Metro Transit on a web series called, “Hey! Where Does This Bus Go?” In each episode, he rides a local bus route from start to finish, noting landmarks along the way and chatting with riders. The series demystifies each bus route and changes people’s perception of who rides the bus.

Last year’s Broward MPO State of the Region Awards honorees were former Hollywood Commissioner and past Broward MPO board chair Richard Blattner, Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), Fort Lauderdale Chapter, Florida House of Representatives member Christine Hunschofsky [D-96] and Deputy City Manager Sheila Rose.

The event is presented by Accenture, Deloitte and T.Y. Lin with other sponsors including the City of Hollywood, BYD, Kimley Horn; South Florida Regional Transportation Authority/Tri Rail; Galleria Fort Lauderdale; GPR | Goodman Public Relations, City of Lauderdale Lakes, The Brand Advocates, Circuit, Benesch, TSE Consulting, City of Coconut Creek, FEC Railroad, The Whitehouse Group and Port Everglades.

Awards dinner tickets are $150 per person; tables of 10 are available. To reserve tickets, please visit https://bit.ly/BrowardMPOSOTRAwards2023.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will present a free book signing and meet & greet with Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies, authors of “Florida: A History in Pictures” (MacIntyre Purcell Publishing Inc.), on Saturday, February 11, from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Their appearance is part of History Fort Lauderdale’s “Florida Scribes & Stories,” a meet the author monthly series that offers literary and history enthusiasts a chance to speak with local authors, purchase their latest releases and have them signed.

Mike McGinness and Jeff Davies have put together the definitive photographic account of the Sunshine State. With more than 130 photographs ― many of them seen for the first time ― “Florida: A History in Pictures” offers a stunning portrait of this one-of-a-kind state. From the stone forts at St. Augustine, the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States, to the Everglades (or “The Big Swamp” as it was called at the beginning of the 20th century) to Bok Tower Gardens in Lake Wales, the Fort Myers Beach arches and Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, it is all here.
Mike McGinness is a native of Florida, born in Orlando and raised in Altamonte Springs and Tampa. He has lived in Florida for more than 50 years. He has a passion for studying history, the great outdoors, bass fishing, music, and rooting for his favorite sports teams. He works in Data Center Operations for AdventHealth in Altamonte Springs and has been with the same company for 38 years.

Boca Raton resident Jeff Davies’ passion for history has spanned many decades. His family relocated to North Bay Village from Brooklyn when Jeff was just five years old. Davies was always interested in the history behind old pictures and became known as the family historian. He eventually became the third generation in the audio/video electronics business and continues with this profession today.

History Fort Lauderdale is proud to host a variety of engaging multicultural experiences, year- round. Permanent exhibits include “From Dugouts to Dream Yachts,” a visual narrative weaving the story of the ever-changing use of Fort Lauderdale’s waterways by following the strokes of the first people to today’s sightseers, “The Bryans of Fort Lauderdale” which allows visitors to experience the story of the City of Fort Lauderdale as told through the pioneer family that shaped its development from an agricultural outpost in 1896 to a bustling city in the 1920s to its current status as a leading Metropolis, “Juliette Lange: A Portrait of a Mezzo Soprano,” a fashion and lifestyle glimpse of the socially prominent Fort Lauderdale resident with a lauded career as a star vocalist of musical comedy, plus “Archaeology of the New River” and a multitude of stories and photos sharing the history of other founding families of Fort Lauderdale. The nonprofit museum also hosts an artists’ collective collaborative space.

ABOUT RACHMANINOFF

Born in 1873, composer Sergei Rachmaninoff was not only one of the greatest pianists in history. While his Piano Concertos are considered amongst the most beloved by any composer, Rachmaninoff’s solo piano music features several hours of renowned works ranging from his two piano sonatas, 24 Preludes, and 17 Etudes Tableaux to his own transcriptions, variations on themes by other composers, and much much more.

RACHMANINOFF AT 150 most likely is the first time in Florida that all solo piano works by the great composer can be heard in concert – and by one of today’s most electrifying young pianists no less.

ABOUT ASIYA KOREPANOVA

Born to a musical family in Russia, Miss Korepanova made her orchestral debut at the age of nine with Mozart’s Concerto No. 8, including her own newly-composed cadenza. A musical prodigy, Korepanova’s early musical awards include the Russian Federation’s President Award for “Exceptional Achievement in the Arts,” and in 2012 won the Gold Medal at the Nina Wideman International Piano Competition.

Since immigrating to the U.S. in 2012, Korepanova has garnered national attention with performances at the Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, the Bargemusic Series, the Phillips Collection, the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Series, the Miami International Piano Festival, and many others. She has been featured on CNN, NPR stations, WFMT, and WETA.

This season, in addition to being featured in the six recitals in Miami devoted to the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff, she will also celebrate the premiere of her latest transcription of Tchaikovsky’s epic Manfred Symphony, and also release scores of her compositions: the Poéme for alto saxophone and piano, and ‘Con Brio’ for two pianos, as well as solo piano transcriptions of works by Chopin, Schumann, Amy Beach, Faure, Mussorgsky, Franck, and Bach.

As the romance between Sally and Cliff develops, audiences watch as the declining morality in Berlin gives way to the looming rise of Nazism, just a few short years before the world would fall victim to World War II. With a book by Joe Masteroff, music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb, Cabaret premiered on Broadway in 1966, with the legendary Harold Prince at the helm. The work became an instant classic with multiple revivals in the intervening years.

Cost: Free

American Heritage Schools, the top-ranked PK3 through 12 college preparatory school, invites educators from throughout the country to its virtual “Continuing Education Webinar and Job Fair” on Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. EST. From the convenience of their homes, attendees will learn about job opportunities and the benefits of teaching at American Heritage Schools’ Broward Campus and Palm Beach Campus.

Viewers will hear directly from the American Heritage Schools President, Dr. Douglas Laurie, about how the Schools’ mentoring program supports educators in their professional growth. They will also earn 1.5 hours of continuing education credit offered by the Association of Independent Schools of Florida (AISF) by attending a keynote address given by nationally recognized teacher A.J. Juliani, founder of Adaptable Learning, on the importance of adaptability in the classroom.

Educating students is hard work. It was before the pandemic, and it has continued to challenge all teachers, coaches, administrators and parents. Going from in-person teaching to remote learning and then to a hybrid approach, educators have seen the need for flexible curriculum and instruction. Juliani’s Keynote builds on the best of what educators have done for years: adapt their instruction to meet the needs of their students.

Juliani serves as faculty for the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education (PLN) and is the former Director of Learning and Innovation for Centennial School District. As a curriculum coordinator, tech director, English teacher, football coach, and K-12 instructional coach, he has worked towards innovative learning experiences for schools in various roles. Juliani is also an award-winning blogger, speaker, and author of multiple books, including the best-sellers Adaptable, Empower, and Launch.

American Heritage Schools is one of the top four largest private schools in the nation and among the top 20 largest employers in South Florida. It is headed by educators rather than a board of directors and maintains subsidiary departments in-house, such as admissions, human Resources, curriculum development and PR/marketing. The Schools also offer free tuition for employees’ children and salary supplementation for additional roles, including tutoring during the year and teaching at the Summer Institute over the summer.

· 7-7:30 p.m.: Learn About Opportunities and Benefits of Teaching at American Heritage Schools
· 7:30-8:20 p.m.: A.J. Juliani, Keynote Speech “Adaptability in the Classroom”
· 8:20-8:30 p.m.: Q&A

Fantasy Theatre Factory presents a CAP @ SRT Spanish adaptation of Ibsen’s famous A Dolls House 2…El Regreso de Nora.
