Hollywood Art and Culture Center Arts Hub Grand Opening and FREE Arts Day 11/2/25

Hollywood Art and Culture Center Arts Hub Grand Opening and FREE Arts Day
Sunday, 11/02/2025-, 12:00 pm-04:00 pm
Hollywood Art and Culture Center
1650 Harrison St.,
Hollywood, Florida, 33020
RSVP / Register

Hollywood Art and Culture Center, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will unveil the addition of the Hollywood Arts Hub to its historic Kagey Home main campus with a grand opening ribbon cutting set for noon on Sunday, November 2 – exactly 50 years from The Center’s opening in 1975 – with local dignitaries. The public is invited to attend the special event and enjoy complimentary tours, performances, artmaking and more in the new arts education wing.

The new Hollywood Arts Hub now holds the unique architectural distinction in Broward County of having adjoining, functional spaces built 101 years apart. It includes a 110-seat Arts Auditorium, the Create More Art Studio, a Digital Media Lab with multimedia studio classrooms, the outdoor Imagine Courtyard, a multi-purpose room for dance, drama, artist talks, film screenings, meeting space and more. This building will be a visual landmark in Downtown Hollywood drawing residents and visitors to The Center.

The distinctly dramatic and contemporary design by award winning architectural firm, Brooks + Scarpa merges with the existing two-story, historic 1924 Mediterranean Revival architecture of the Kagey Home, which houses The Center galleries and administrative offices.

Construction of the Arts Hub was funded by the City of Hollywood through dedicated funding from the 2019 General Obligation Bond that was approved by City voters in a special election. The Pirtle Construction team broke ground on April 30, 2024, and will meet the opening deadline as planned.

As part of the Arts Hub grand opening, residents and visitors can also view The Center’s current exhibitions: Dennis Scholl: A Day of Four Sunsets, Felice Grodin: Where do I go from here? and Brian Reedy: Gothic Pop Prints. These exhibits were made possible through support from the City of Hollywood, Broward County Cultural Division, Broward County Board of County Commissioners, Max Chira and Family, State of Florida Division of Arts and Culture, National Endowment for the Arts, Community Foundation Broward, David and Francie Horvitz Family Foundation, Josephine S. Leiser Foundation, Memorial Healthcare System, The Windhover Foundation & Quadracci Family, Kofsky Weinger, PA, and Helen Ingham Foundation.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s Handel’s Messiah and Holiday Pops at The Parker 12/6/25

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s Handel’s Messiah and Holiday Pops at The Parker
Saturday, 12/06/2025-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
The Parker
707 NE 8th Street,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33304
Website
Cost: Tickets start at $35 (plus fees)

South Florida Symphony Orchestra (SFSO), led by Sebrina María Alfonso, returns to illuminate and inspire joy this holiday season with its beloved performances of Handel’s glorious Messiah (Part 1, the Christmas portion) culminating in the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus, and modern Holiday Pops favorites on December 6, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale. SFSO will be joined by vocal soloists Katherine Henly (soprano), Maggie Reneé (mezzo-soprano), Christopher W. Waite (tenor), Neil Nelson (bass-baritone) and the South Florida Symphony Chorus. Enjoy a pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason 30 minutes before the concerts, featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composer.

SFSO’s 2025 holiday program will open with a selection of Holiday Pops festive favorites including “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,” “The Prayer” (as made popular by Andrea Bocelli), “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” (as made popular by Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani), “Christmas Canon” (made popular by Trans-Siberian Orchestra) and “Festive Sounds of Hanukkah.” Audiences are also invited to sing along to a special medley of cherished classics – “Jingle, Bells,” “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World” and more.

Per tradition, SFSO will close the joyous evening with Part I of Handel’s Messiah culminating with the iconic “Hallelujah” chorus as sung by the South Florida Symphony Chorus, made-up of seasoned chorale singers and community talent, directed by Dr. Giselle Elgarresta Rios. Rios and Maestra Alfonso collaborated to create the South Florida Symphony Chorus in 2019, which made its debut at the Beethoven 250th celebration in February of 2020.

SFSO’s 28th season of “Juxtapositions” explores beauty in contrasts, where the bold and the sublime intersect, and timeless masterpieces share the stage with today’s most compelling and celebrated musical voices. From Mozart’s vivacious “Haffner” symphony to the sun-drenched skies of Mendelssohn’s “Italian” and the sweeping emotion of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto — performances burst with color and power. Beethoven’s luminous Piano Concerto No. 4 and Dvořák’s Bohemian Eighth deepen the journey, while Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol whirls with Spanish flair. SFSO is also proud to present upcoming orchestra firsts by GRAMMY-nominated composers, including the Florida premiere of Had to Be by Haitian-American Nathalie Joachim, featuring breakout cellist Seth Parker Woods, and Carlos Simon’s Four Black American Dances.

From sold-out masterworks performances to accompanying today’s musicians such as Natalie Merchant and performing modern musical scores including Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas and Back to the Future, featuring the iconic films screened live with audio and musical accompaniment, South Florida’s largest symphonic orchestra is continuing its journey of excellence inspiring audiences of all ages and musical genres. Back by popular demand, SFSO will accompany ARRIVAL from Sweden: The Music of ABBA on Feb. 26 at the Broward Center.

Tickets for Handel’s Messiah are on sale now beginning at $35. Buy tickets online at southfloridasymphony.org or ParkerPlayhouse.com; by phone at (954) 462-0222, press 1; and in person at the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office. Veterans dedicate their lives to serving the United States. However, many veterans and active military members and their loved ones face food insecurity. In celebration of two major milestones—the 125th anniversary of Kurt Weill’s birth and the 75th year since his passing—Orchestra Miami proudly presents From Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill, a captivating musical revue that honors the life and legacy of one of the 20th century’s most influential composers.

Recognized for his groundbreaking ability to bridge the worlds of opera and musical theatre, Weill created unforgettable works that combined powerful storytelling with strong melodies and deep social conscience.

About the Show
From Berlin to Broadway with Kurt Weill traces the composer’s extraordinary journey from his early success in Germany to his triumphant career in the United States. The revue features over 40 of Weill’s iconic songs, with lyrics by some of his most celebrated collaborators including Bertolt Brecht, Ira Gershwin, and Alan Jay Lerner. Through a compelling mix of narration and musical numbers, the production explores Weill’s artistic evolution through times of political upheaval, exile, and adaptation to new musical landscapes.

The performance is structured in two acts, reflecting the distinct chapters of Weill’s career. The first act delves into his early work in Germany (pre-1935), while the second highlights his prolific years in America (post-1935). Audiences will enjoy timeless classics from The Threepenny Opera, Lady in the Dark, Lost in the Stars, and more—including favorites like “Mack the Knife,” “September Song,” “Surabaya Johnny,” “My Ship,” and “The Saga of Jenny.”

An All-Star Cast
Orchestra Miami has assembled an exceptional cast for this special production: soprano Rose Kearinis one of the foremost interpreters of song of her generation; Elise Quagliata is a GRAMMY-nominated mezzo-soprano and one of America’s leading Carmens; tenor Ben Gulley is that rare singer who is equally at home in opera, musical theater, and pop;
and Lovell Rose, a dynamic baritone and one of South Florida’s busiest performing artists.

The production is directed by Ali Tallman, known for her work as a director, dramaturg, and movement specialist. Elaine Rinaldi, Orchestra Miami’s Artistic Director, serves as Music Director, leading a 6-piece live cabaret ensemble in a fully staged performance.

Can’t make it on Nov 22nd? There is a 2nd performance on Sunday, Nov.23rd, 7 PM at the Miami Beach Bandshell. Please visit https://www.orchestramiami.org/berlin-to-broadway for more information.

A conversation led by COMMISSIONER.US

6 PM Doors open, 6:30 PM Talk starts, 7:30 PM Activity

Complimentary admission with RSVP. Limited seated based on first-come, first-served.

Commissioner, Miami’s longest-running community-led art commissioning program, leads a conversation exploring how art and collecting can serve as tools for truth-telling, memory, and cultural reclamation. Inspired by artist Isaac Julien’s Vagabondia (2000), soon on view at The Bass, the invited panel will also consider the evolving role and responsibility of individuals and communities in the cultural stewardship and preservation of inclusive narratives.

In addition to the talk, guests can partake in a public art walk—an activity to reflect on how shared experiences and cultural memories are recorded in our very own neighborhoods. This exercise will encourage participants to consider how their stories contribute to a broader, more expansive historical record, and how these memories can be preserved for future generations.

Japanese-born artist Yuko Mohri creates kinetic installations and sculptures that respond to environmental forces such as gravity, sound, and humidity. Using found materials, she constructs systems that evolve in real time, challenging ideas of control, permanence, and authorship in art.

Mohri joins James Voorhies, Curator-at-Large at The Bass, for a guided discussion on her process, her relationship with unpredictability, and shifting conditions that shape her work. Together they will explore the role of impermanence in contemporary installation art and the creative potential of chance.

Island City Stage presents Ruthless! The Musical 11/6/25 – 12/7/25

Island City Stage presents Ruthless! The Musical
Thursday, 11/06/2025-12/07/2025, 07:00 pm-09:00 pm
Island City Stage
2304 N. Dixie Highway,
Wilton Manors, Florida, 33305
Website
Cost: $50 – $67

Buckle up for Ruthless! The Musical, the hilariously twisted comedy where the spotlight can be deadly, launching Island City Stage’s 14th South Florida Season on November 6. Meet eight-year-old Tina Denmark—a pint-sized diva who knows she was destined to play Pippi Longstocking in her school musical, and if she has to knock off the competition to get the part? Well, that’s showbiz! This Off-Broadway cult favorite is a deliciously campy satire packed with sharp wit, outrageous twists, and over-the-top characters. The show will run through December 7.

The book and lyrics of Ruthless! The Musical are by Joel Paley, music by Marvin Laird, and the production is directed by Island City Stage’s Artistic Director, Andy Rogow.

Ruthless! The Musical opened at the Players Theatre in New York City’s Greenwich Village on March 13, 1992 and ran for 342 performances. The lead role of Tina was originally played by nine-year-old Laura Bell Bundy, best known today as a highly successful country music artist and TV, stage and screen actress. A bit of trivia: two other stars of tomorrow, Natalie Portman and Britney Spears, served as understudies for the original production. The show won the 1993 New York Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical. The show opened in Los Angeles in 1993, in Miami in 1995 and in London in 2002, among many other venues since then.

Island City Stage’s production of Ruthless! The Musical stars nine-year-old child actress Daisy Tanner (Tina Denmark), Lindsey Corey (Judy/Ginger), Leah Sessa (Louise/Eve), Maribeth Graham (Miss Thorn/Reporter), Michael Ursua (Sylvia St. Croix) and Aaron Bower (Lita).

Individual show tickets start at $50. A Mimosa Sunday Brunch sponsored by Murl Casey, Chuck David, Chuck Jackson & Steve Laskin will take place November 16 with tickets priced at $67. Women’s Night at the Theatre, sponsored by Leslie Fine, takes place on December 5 with tickets at $50. The show runs for two hours with an intermission.
From twisted tales to touching human stories, Island City Stage’s upcoming season invites you to expect the unexpected. Upcoming bold productions, each delivering unexpected twists, inventive storytelling, and unforgettable theatrical moments include The Little Foxes by Lillian Hellman from January 8 – February 8; Everything Beautiful Happens at Night by Ted Malawer from April 2 – 26; Light Switch by Dave Osmundsen from May 21 – June 14 and Eureka Day by Jonathan Spector from August 20 – September 20.

Island City Stage will also be offering two Flexpass options this season. The Flexpass5 ($225) offers five tickets that can be used all for one show or one for every show (no processing fees) and $5 off additional tickets purchased. The Flexpass3 ($136) offers three tickets that can be used all for one show or one for every show (no processing fees) and $5 off additional tickets purchased. Discounts are available for groups.

Mac Stone is a conservation photographer. Growing up exploring the springs, swamps, and hammocks of North Central Florida, he developed a passion for photography at a young age. Over the years his camera has carried him to some of the most remote and imperiled areas this side of the globe. For six months, Stone lived in Ecuador during the presidential overthrow of 2005 and worked with Wildlife Conservation Society biologists in the Amazon rain forest. Soon after, he moved to Honduras and lived in a small village along the Cangrejal River. South Florida Symphony Orchestra Opens 28th Season with Brahms, Saint-Saëns, Beethoven & Massenet at The Parker 11/5/25

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Opens 28th Season with Brahms, Saint-Saëns, Beethoven & Massenet at The Parker
Wednesday, 11/05/2025-, 07:30 pm-09:30 pm
The Parker (Parker Playhouse)
707 NE 8th Street,
Fort Lauderdale, Florida, 33304
Website
Cost: Tickets start at $35.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) 28th season, “Juxtapositions,” ignites with a powerful reminder that even in darkness, light will always find its way. Led by award-winning Maestra Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO launches the electrifying evening with Beethoven’s freedom-fighting Egmont Overture followed by Saint-Saëns’ fiery Cello Concerto No. 1 and Massenet’s hushed “Méditation” from Thaïs featuring GRAMMY®-winning cellist virtuoso Zuill Bailey. Capping the evening is Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 – a profound work that took the composer decades to complete, beautifully articulating one’s journey from darkness to triumph. The concert will take place on Wednesday, November 5, at 7:30 p.m., at The Parker in Fort Lauderdale (707 NE 8th St.). Enjoy a pre-concert chat with Dr. Alan Mason 30 minutes before the concert, featuring in-depth conversation and insights about the works and composers.

A work of extraordinary triumph that took decades to complete, Brahms’ First Symphony is an epic, deeply human piece reflecting the composer’s battles with self-doubt and perfectionism under the weight of Beethoven’s omnipresent shadow. From its brooding, stormy opening to the life-affirming finale, Brahms beautifully traces one’s journey from darkness to light. A signature of this work is the candescent French horn, brilliantly illuminating the path from despair to victory.

Saint-Saëns’ Cello Concerto No. 1 is a whirlwind of movement—elegant yet fiery, delicate yet commanding. With no pause from start to finish, the music flows in an unbroken surge of passion and virtuosity. Audience favorite cellist Zuill Bailey returns to SFSO bringing his signature artistry to this expressive work.

Beethoven’s freedom-fighting Egmont Overture portrays the tragic heroism of a man who makes the ultimate sacrifice in defiance of oppression and tyranny.

Originally composed for violin, Massenet’s “Méditation” from Thaïs takes on new depth in this interpretation for cello—an SFSO first. A hushed prayer amid the opera’s high drama, this sublime interlude floats with quiet longing.

Cost: $15

Figure Drawing Workshop

The Art of Seeing: Line and Gesture begins with a visit to Sarah Crowner’s exhibition Faire Foyer: Sarah Crowner in Dialogue with Etel Adnan, where her reflective bronze sculptures embody movement, gesture, and organic form. Observing how her shapes seem to breathe and shift with light, we draw a connection between her sculptural language and the living human body.

From there, we move into the practice of drawing with a live model. We begin with short one- and two-minute poses, capturing the rhythm and gestural energy of the figure. As we progress to longer poses, structure and form take on a more prominent role in our study of the body. The focus is on observation, intuition, and the expressive potential of the line—learning not only to draw what we see, but to see with greater attention and presence.

Workshops @ The Bass are created for adults ages 21+ at any skill level. All materials are provided.

The class is $15 for museum members and $20 for nonmembers.

History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our community’s past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will celebrate the opening of its newest exhibit, “The Growth and History of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office” with a special public preview, free opening reception and book signing on Tuesday, October 14, from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m. This engaging exhibition takes a closer look at the department’s progress over the years, from 1915 to the present, while also highlighting the sometimes-scandalous history that has shaped its story. The exhibit features images and narratives from the department’s origins to the prohibition era, organized crime, gambling and outlaws, to mid-century racial tensions and finally, the expansion, modernization, and professionalism of today.

As part of the festivities, guests are invited to participate in a “Florida Scribes & Stories” free book signing and meet & greet with retired decorated BSO Deputy Sheriff Joe Williams, author of Unearthed. Williams is also a major contributor of artifacts and photographs to the new exhibit.

A complement to the exhibit, Unearthed captures the dark history of Broward County in the 1940s. A tough-as-nails sheriff who did things his way. The New York mobster Meyer Lansky who profited from his friendship with the sheriff’s department. It is a story of a young cop hired to enforce the Florida gambling laws, ultimately leading to his untimely death. A 75-year-old story of his tragic death from a car accident … or was it?

Drinks and light bites will be provided. Guests may RSVP to bit.ly/FloridaScribesWilliams2025.

animals that call the Museum home. Families can get creative making “Frightening Flights” with ghosts or witches that soar in the wind chute and designing a haunted village to take home.

On Saturday, October 25, the fun gets even bigger with Pumpkins, Paws and Protectors!
Families can decorate pumpkins, sponsored by Truly Nolen (spaces are limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis), and meet real community heroes in the Touch-a-Truck Zone. Police officers, firefighters and their vehicles will be on site, along with K-9 demonstrations showcasing the bravery of first responders. From 11 a.m. – 2 p.m., Chewy Vet Care will host an interactive Vet Clinic, where children can step into the role of animal caretakers, practice empathy and learn how to care for pets and animals in need.

As part of the weekend festivities, MODS is proud to be a Pink Pumpkin site in partnership with CITY Furniture. Support CITY Furniture’s Pink Pumpkin campaign to spread breast cancer awareness by picking up a Pink Pumpkin bucket at the Museum. Buckets will be available October 25–26 for children 12 and under, while supplies last.

Costumes are encouraged. (For everyone’s safety and enjoyment, please avoid facemasks and toy weapons, including toy guns.)

All weekend long, step into PAW PatrolTM: Adventure Play, presented by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Florida Prepaid College Savings Plan and Chewy VetCare, and discover the world of STEAM through your favorite heroic pups. Families can explore action-packed missions and enjoy paws-itively fun adventures. Based on the hit preschool series PAW Patrol, produced by Spin Master Entertainment and airing on Nickelodeon, this interactive exhibit gives kids and their grown-ups an opportunity to run rescue missions and work together to overcome challenges in a fun and immersive environment.

Visit Adventure Bay with rescue pups – police officer Chase, firefighter Marshall, construction worker Rubble, pilot Skye and more. Just as the heroic pups, who believe “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” work together to protect the community on the TV show, families will work together to save the day with a can-do attitude and learn how real-life professionals coordinate to keep people safe and happy. Families are invited to pop on a pup pack containing their own imaginary tools and check out the lay of the land from the lookout tower, Jake’s Mountain and the snowy slide to see if anyone is in trouble. They can also board the PAW Patroller and drive it up the mountain to help Rubble and Everest rescue a snowboarder stuck in the snow and cruise Adventure Bay aboard the Sea Patroller, steering it to rescue baby seagulls and turtles.

Included with Museum admission. Visit mods.org/pumpkins to RSVP.

Hollywood Art and Culture Center Presents One Exhibition, Three Artists – Dennis Scholl, Felice Grodin and Brian Reedy

Cost: $10 – general admission; $5 – Seniors 65 +, Students 13 -17, Free for Hollywood Art and Culture Center members, children under 12, active US military personnel families and teachers

Hollywood Art and Culture Center, celebrating its 50th anniversary, will feature three new art exhibitions for the fall/winter season. Dennis Scholl: A Day of Four Sunsets and Felice Grodin: Where Do I Go From Here? will be on display from Saturday, October 18, through Sunday, January 4, and Brian Reedy: Gothic Pop Prints will be on display from October 18 through November 2 in the main gallery space. An opening reception will take place on October 18 beginning at 6 p.m.

A Day of Four Sunsets presents a new body of work by Miami-based artist Dennis Scholl, exploring the poetics of space exploration through assemblages of NASA memorabilia. The exhibition takes its title from astronaut John Glenn’s experience of witnessing four sunsets as he orbited Earth in 1962, evoking themes of time, memory, and the sublime vastness of the cosmos. Scholl’s work, rooted in the language of historical artifacts and collective memory, arranges space exploration ephemera into compositions structured by the dodecagon — a recurring motif in his practice that represents cyclical time and cosmic order. Over the past decade, he has meticulously gathered NASA-related materials, including mission patches, declassified documents, photographs, and newspaper clippings, integrating them into intricate assemblages that reframe our understanding of humanity’s relationship with the unknown. Scholl’s work gives us an insight into his keen collector’s eye and his skill at design and storytelling. In Untitled (Viking Orbiter II), photographs of Mars captured using surface imaging are arranged in thoughtful compositions. Visitors will find themselves viewing a piece of history transported back to 1969 with the work Untitled (Man on Moon). This exhibition contains more than 14 works of art that immerse the viewer into the history and collective memory of outer space, the universe, and astronauts. From real space food to sculptures created using space gloves, to viewfinders with images of the universe, this exhibition will fascinate science, history and modern art enthusiasts alike.

Felice Grodin’s architectural training informs her drawings, intricately weaving together elements of imagination, the future, and the past. Where Do I Go From Here? features more than 10 new works, some of which were created during Grodin’s time as a Center 2025 Spring Artist in Residence. With meticulous care and references to ancient civilizations, Grodin renders lines into complex arrangements of circles and curves, creating dynamic three-dimensional forms and exploring the concept of mental boundaries. Her art transports viewers to a psychological realm reminiscent of maps, cities, landscapes, and speculative future worlds. These ink drawings on mylar can sometimes rely on chance, or automatism, liberating not only the creative process, but inviting viewers into the surreal.

Gothic Pop Prints by Miami artist Brian Reedy features more than 10 custom linoleum block prints. The Center commissioned Reedy to create a work about Lizzie Borden inspired by Lizzie the Musical, which will be performed Oct. 18 – Nov. 1 at the Hollywood Central Performing Arts Center. In addition to the Lizzie Borden print, the exhibition features the macabre and spooky iconography of hauntings, oddities, and the afterlife in an expressionist and graphic style. Reedy’s woodblock prints combine his eye for graphic design, the skill of European medieval woodcuts and Japanese woodblock prints into modern pop culture masterpieces. Reedy creates modern works of art using the painstaking process of block printing, the craft of hand carving wood blocks to transfer ink to paper. Brian’s expertise in this art form has provided a unique combination of traditional print making with pop-culture iconography and themes.

A guided tour of the exhibition will take place on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. An artist talk will take place on Saturday, December 13, at 1 p.m. On Saturdays, November 15 and December 20, at 6 p.m., a free curator tour/Downtown Hollywood Art Walk will be conducted.

Internationally acclaimed artist Isaac Julian returns for a highly anticipated conversation moderated by Silvia Karman Cubiñá, Executive Director of The Bass. Together, they reflect on Julien’s groundbreaking video installation Vagabondia (2000), a recent gift from collectors Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz and now on view at the museum. The work was among the first to posit the museum as a space where suppressed stories and experiences can – and should – surface in their totality. Twenty-five years after its debut, we revisit the work and context in which it’s presented today.

Librarians unite to combat book banning, defending intellectual freedom on democracy’s frontlines amid unprecedented censorship in Texas, Florida, and beyond.

As an unprecedented wave of book banning is sparked in Texas, Florida, and beyond, librarians under siege join forces as unlikely defenders fighting for intellectual freedom on the front lines of democracy.

THE LIBRARIANS offers a rattling look at coordinated efforts to ban books. More importantly, it introduces viewers to the everyday and increasingly vital heroes pushing back: the librarians who sound the alarm to both legislative and grassroots attempts to pull books from school and public libraries.

In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories – triggering sweeping book bans across the U.S. at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots from heated school and library board meetings nationwide to lay bare the underpinnings of White Christian Nationalism fueling the censorship efforts. Despite facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work – the librarians’ rallying cry for freedom to read is a chilling cautionary tale.

Join MOAD at the newly reopened Freedom Tower for an engaging edition of the Kislak Talks series, featuring a conversation with scholar and author Ananda Cohen-Aponte and MOAD’s director, Amy Galpin.

Referring to the Andean paintings and textiles in the Kislak Center at the Freedom Tower, Cohen-Aponte will discuss the intersections of visual culture, coloniality, and resistance within the Andean region. Her talk will explore how these works reflect the complex social, political, and spiritual dynamics of migration, and how they blend the cultural heritage of immigrants with colonial influences to create a unique visual language of identity and adaptation.

Ananda Cohen-Aponte is an Associate Professor of History of Art at Cornell University and a recent Getty Fellow for the 2024-2025 academic year. The author of Heaven, Hell, and Everything in Between: Murals of the Colonial Andes and Reimagining Lost Visual Archives of Black and Indigenous Resistance, her research examines racial formation, cross-cultural exchange, and the legacies of colonialism in Latinx art.

This event celebrates the newly installed Kislak Center exhibition, Languages of Migration.

The Museum of Art and Design (MOAD) at MDC may document the event, including its attendees. By entering the area, and/or participating in the event, you consent to the recording and its use in any form.
