The South Beach Jazz Festival returns Jan. 5 – 7, 2018 for a weekend of classic, Latin, and New Orleans-Style acts featuring Branford Marsalis, Ignacio Berroa, Tal Cohen, Rachelle Coba, Glyn Dryhurst, Carlos Averhoff, Jr., Carlos Puig and Dr. Ed Calle.

A jazz festival unlike any other, the South Beach Jazz Festival will take pride in featuring talented musicians with Disabilities. The South Beach Jazz Festival will feature a weekend of classic, Latin, and New Orleans-style acts that will attract jazz fans to South Beach hotels, theaters and restaurants. Most acts performing under the festival’s auspices will showcase the artistry of at least one person with a disability. Those looking to immerse themselves in cultural innovation, enjoy jazz music and learn more about those with disabilities in our community are welcome to attend.

The festival takes place in various location in South Beach, including: Colony Theater, 1111 Lincoln Road Stage and Euclid Circle – Main Stage, located on Lincoln Road at Euclid Avenue, Jewish Museum of Florida and The Gleason Room at the Fillmore Miami Beach.

Shops at Merrick Park, Coral Gables’ pristine destination for fine shopping and dining, will host an open to the public “Jazz on the Green for the Holidays” winter concert. Ccucu’s iconic artists David Banegas, Juan Cabas, MJ POP, Nordis Rafael Velasquez, Radius Rock and William Pavolini’s will have their distinct works of art showcased throughout the property’s garden area.

Guests will have the option to enjoy an exclusive VIP experience, which will be available at SAWA for $40 per person. A percentage of VIP ticket sales will benefit the hurricane relief efforts undertaken by Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally acclaimed nonprofit organization based in Miami, founded by CBS television in the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Neighbors 4 Neighbors will be on hand to share their ongoing Adopt A Family program which spreads holiday cheer and support for those in need.

MIAMI, FL – Renowned actor Avi Hoffman will star in the South Florida premiere of Reflections of A Lost Poet. Reflections will run at The Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center’s (MAR-JCC) Cultural Arts Theatre (JCAT) from Wednesday, December 13 through Sunday, December 24, 2017.
Reflections of A Lost Poet will be performed in the original Yiddish language with both English and Spanish supertitles. Performances in Yiddish with English supertitles have proven to be a success, as with Mr. Hoffman’s Drama Desk nominated Off-Broadway performance of Willy Loman in Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman in Yiddish and Paula Vogel’s Indecent, seen last year on Broadway and on PBS, in which some of the dialog was in Yiddish.
Reflections of A Lost Poet, written by acclaimed playwright Miriam Hoffman, (who is also Avi’s mother and was recently inducted into the Bronx Jewish Hall of Fame), is a one-man tour de force following the life and times of Itzik Manger, considered one of the greatest Yiddish poets. The play is a serious, occasionally funny, monologue comprised of songs and poems, capturing Manger’s joy and anguish during the tumultuous years of Europe’s burgeoning Jewish culture, before it was decimated by WWII. The Megillah of Itzik Manger was the last musical performed on Broadway, entirely in Yiddish, in 1968.
“It will be one of my most meaningful performances, as it’s written by my mother and I’ll be speaking solely in Yiddish, which is the heart and soul of the great poet Itzik Manger’s work,” said Avi Hoffman. “For the past few years, my mother and I have reestablished the Joseph Papp Yiddish Theatre, which aims to keep the Yiddish culture alive. The fact that this show will be performed in Yiddish, with English and Spanish subtitles, is a step in helping us reach our goal.”

On November 9, Shalva Children’s Center hosted a charitable event for Founder and President Kalman Samuels with the City of Miami, hosted by Dr. Jarred Mait and Dr. Ronen Harris to honor Shalva and inaugurate November 9 as National Shalva’s Day.

The nearly thirty-year-old organization out of Israel dedicated to providing transformative care for individuals with disabilities, empowering their families and promoting social inclusion. Shalva supports and enables families to raise their children with disabilities within the family framework, partnering with government, academic and philanthropic institutions in advocacy efforts to create a more inclusive society for nearly three decades.

Royal Enfield is pleased to present The Art of the Motorcycle, a series of four exhibitions taking place at select venues during Art Basel Miami Beach, from December 6 through December 10, 2017. The Art of the Motorcycle features the works of celebrated Miami artists: Brookhart Jonquil, Alexander Mijares and The Milagros Collective. Known for their artistry and craftsmanship, Royal Enfield is commissioning these local talents to interpret Royal Enfield in their own distinctive and unique artistic styles during one of the art world’s most illustrious seasons.

In the atrium of The Betsy-South Beach Hotel (1440 Ocean Dr, Miami Beach), Sculptor Brookhart Jonquil has created Odysseus, a Royal Enfield motorcycle hung within a mirrored, crystal-shaped structure. The show opens on December 4,2017 with an opening reception on December 8, 2017 at 8PM. It will be on display until December 10.

At the Imperial Moto Café (7299 NW 2nd Ave, Miami), self-taught painter, Alexander Mijares, has painted a Royal Enfield motorcycle in bold, bright colors that convey the vibrancy and energy of Miami. His painted Royal Enfield motorcycle will be displayed from December 6, 2017 until December 31.

Knight Club by collaborative artistic duo, The Milagros Collective, opened on October 21, 2017 and will be on display at the Young At Art Museum (751 SW 121st Ave, Davie) in Davie until April 2018.

The Milagros Collective’s second contribution to The Art of the Motorcycle, is a site-specific installation at Made at the Citadel (8325 NE 2nd Ave, Miami), a coworking space for creatives and artists. The work will be unveiled on December 7, 2017. Immediately after its unveiling, it will be moved to Walt Grace Vintage (2450 NW 2nd Avenue Wynwood), an art gallery and vintage luxury car showroom, until December 31.

Royal Enfield, the oldest motorcycle brand in continuous production, goes beyond motorcycles; it is a motorcycling sub-culture, a culture of explorations and adventures.

A vital force and emergent legend within both the hardcore straight ahead and Latin Jazz communities, Grammy© Award Winner Brian Lynch is as comfortable negotiating the complexities of clave with Afro-Caribbean pioneer Eddie Palmieri as he is swinging through advanced harmony with bebop maestro Phil Woods. A honored graduate of two of the jazz world’s most distinguished academies, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers and the Horace Silver Quintet, he has been a valued collaborator with jazz artists such as Benny Golson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, and Charles McPherson; Latin music icons as diverse as Hector LaVoe and Lila Downs; and pop luminaries such as Prince. As a bandleader and recording artist he has released 19 critically acclaimed CDs featuring his distinctive composing and arranging, and toured the world with various ensembles reflecting the wide sweep of his music. He currently is Professor of Jazz Trumpet at the Frost School Of Music, University of Miami as well as conducting clinics, residencies and workshops at prestigious institutions of learning the world over. Totor was donated to the City of North Miami Beach in July 2016 by famed French artist and former North Miami Beach Gallery owner Stéphane Bolongaro. Designed and sculpted in honor of his mother Carla Pia Roux Bolongaro’s pet dog Totor, the sculpture has attracted wide-reaching attention. Totor was Monaco’s featured piece in March 2017 during Mr. Bolongaro’s art exhibition, which hosted His Serene Highness Prince Albert II. The artist launched his second exhibition of Totor at the Promenade du Paillon in Nice, France, in July 2017. Sachar was an advisor for the advancement of Middle East peace in both the Bush and Obama Administrations.

Mitchell and Sachar will offer their insiders’ account of progress and backsliding in the Israeli and Palestinians negotiations. They will offer their views on specific concessions each side must make in order to achieve peace. A question and answer period will follow their presentation.

ROSE: An intimate Portrait of Rose Kennedy, by best-selling author Laurence Leamer, will kick-off the inaugural 2017-18 South Florida Season from Forum Productions, in conjunction with the Greenhouse Theater Center NFP, on November 29 at Mizner Park Cultural Center.

A special performance of ROSE on Tuesday, December 5, will benefit the Unicorn Children’s Foundation, a Boca Raton-based, international nonprofit organization dedicated to building communities of acceptance, support and opportunity for individuals and families challenged by special needs and neurodiversity. This performance will feature a special V.I.P. ticket with a Pre-show Champagne Reception and a show-only ticket.

ROSE, presents an intimate portrait of Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, Camelot’s “queen mother,” as she retraces the rise and fall of her great family. Set in 1969 at the Kennedy’s Hyannis Port compound, one week after Teddy Kennedy’s infamous car accident on a bridge in Chappaquiddick, Mass, Rose reflects on her life and her family’s triumphs and tragedies.

The play is based on never-before-heard interviews conducted by Robert Coughlan, the ghostwriter of Rose Kennedy’s 1974 memoir, and compiled by distinguished Kennedy biographer and Palm Beach resident Laurence Leamer. A renowned Kennedy expert, Leamer has penned three best-selling tomes: “The Kennedy Women: The Saga of an American Family,” “The Kennedy Men” and “Sons of Camelot.”

ROSE is directed by revered Chicago director Steve Scott and stars Linda Reiter, a Chicago theater veteran who originated the role at The Greenhouse Theater and recently won a Jeff Award for her portrayal. Her numerous credits also include the television dramas Chicago Med (NBC), Chicago PD (NBC) and The Beast (A&E). Hidden secrets revealed by Barry Fellman’s Mangrove Coast photos will be on view in an invited installation at this year’s Art Miami Fair. Open free to the public during Miami Art Week, new photos from this multi-year project will be presented in a specially designed shipping container at the entrance of Art Miami. The installation, part of the Deep See project, will invite viewers into an immersive water focused experience. 
 
Felllman’s images seduce you, inviting you closer to understand them.  As you approach they clarify into familiar forms of sea grasses and shells, while basic notions of scale and distance remain a mystery until your nose is nearly pressed against the photograph. You then realize you are looking at a wondrous and fantastic view of the shoreline, full of secrets and mysteries.
 
The mangrove ecosystem provides shoreline protection and serves as the economic base for the recreational and commercial activities that have made South Florida prosper.  It recycles nutrients and is the breeding and feeding grounds for hundreds of species, nurturing a wide range of marine life, amphibians, birds, and mammals. 
 
Mangrove Coast at Art Miami is one of four invited components of the Deep See project highlighting awareness about climate change, sea level rise and marine conservation.

Join us for the fifth annual Buskerfest Miami Street Performance Festival in Downtown Miami on Friday, December 15th! From 4-7 pm, local artists will perform 45-minute sets at the Inner Loop stops of the Metromover and select satellite locations, including the Olympia Theater, Sparky’s Roadside Barbecue and Miami Center for Architecture and Design. Starting at 6pm the Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives will be screening historical Miami footage in Bayfront Park. This year our Children’s Corner is presented by Miami Children’s Museum, and moves to Bayfront Park for an abundance of vibrant, interactive story readings, performances, crafts and activities. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. Arts and culture are essential for building a community, supporting the development and contributing to economic opportunity. Collectively, arts and culture enable understanding of the past and envisioning of a shared, more equitable future. The 7th Edition of Art Africa Miami Arts Fair: Back To Black: No On/Off Ramps is set to kick off Miami Art Week and Art Basel 2017 on December 5-10, 2017. The art fair is housed between the Pan-African Pavilion at 919 Plaza at The Lyric and the Featured Artists Pavilion at 920 historic Clyde Killens’ building both on NW 2nd Avenue in Overtown. Art Africa Miami Arts Fair explores how Black Arts respond to the assaults that currently beset the global African Diaspora and the world at large and how artists of African descent and the global south create modes of intervention of radical autonomy.

The event is sponsored by the City of Miami Southeast Overtown Community Redevelopment Agency(SEOPW) and the Greater Miami Visitors and Conventions Bureau. Twenty-five artists from the United States, Africa, Europe, the Caribbean and Latin America are set to showcase their work.
This year’s theme, BACK TO BLACK: No On/Off Ramps, is a multimedia presentation including paintings, sculptures, photography, installation, and video as well as performance exploring how alternative narratives confront the resurgence of oppression and the idea of Black arts’ intervention in the cultural sphere as both necessary and urgent.

Dan Hosker may be gone, but in no way is he forgotten. The dynamic musician who sadly passed away in 2012 lives on thanks to the efforts of his sister Chris Hosker O’Brien, Frank “Rat Bastard” Falestra, Holy Terrors bandmate Rob Elba and the Dan Hosker Music Continuum (DHMC), an event that raises funds for a music scholarship each year. This year’s event will take place Sunday, December 3, 2017, from 6 p.m. to midnight at Las Rosas (2898 NW 7th Avenue, Miami, FL 33127). Cost to attend is $10 for 18 and over; $20 will include a copy of the CD and admission.

Launched in New York in 2006, the fair is considered the most important event of its kind. The founding of PINTA Miami was a milestone event in awareness of twentieth-century Hispanic-American art. It has increased the visibility in the United States of crucial figures like Julio Le Parc, José Gurvich, Jorge Eielson, Lydia Okumura, Antonio Manuel, Waltercio Caldas, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Carlos Cruz Diez, and Spanish artist Elena Asins. On December 7, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his Longitudinal Installation by unveiling a replica of the ceramic sculpture, which will be on permanent display at Pinecrest Gardens. Florida’s Secretary of State Ken Detzner will be present for a dedication ceremony in addition to Palmer Trinity students. The participatory art piece captures voices from 24 individuals across the globe who have been impacted by climate change.

Cortada first created the Longitudinal Installation in the South Pole in 2007 and in the North Pole in 2008. During both visits, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle, each aligned across 24 longitudes. He stopped in front of each of his longitudinal shoe markers and read a quote aloud that revealed a person’s experience with climate change from that part of the world. His artistic ritual illustrated the ways in which individuals all over the world have been profoundly impacted by climate change. Guests are invited to recite the 24 quotes, as Cortada did at both ends of the world. This event is free and open to the public. To kick-off the 2017 Art Basel season, Pinecrest Gardens, South Florida’s Cultural Arts Park, invites the public for the much-anticipated debut of extraordinary exhibits by world-renowned sculptor and Stickwork creator Patrick Dougherty, as well as nationally-acclaimed environmental artist Xavier Cortada. With Pinecrest Gardens’ botanical stage as his inspiration, Dougherty spent 19 days, twisting and weaving willow tree saplings into a magnificent sculpture. While Cortada, who is the park’s first artist-in-residence, creates discourse with his EPOCH exhibit, which portrays life that has existed on our planet over the past 500 million years and encourages the audience to ponder what life forms will inhabit the earth in the future.

Elysa D. Batista exhibits her Scopic Ciphers series at the Williams McCall Gallery in Coconut Grove. The opening reception is open to the public on Saturday, December 2 at 6 pm. The exhibit will run until January 31. Scopic Ciphers is a collection of Batista’s internalized repressed experiences with relation to race, gender, and culture. It is a series of sculptural complaints that dissects the manner in which preconceptions and prejudices vary across both domestic and international spectrums. Batista carves, cuts, and folds manipulated digital typography onto materials including wood and aluminum, which are then mechanically affixed onto material such as plexiglass.

Born in Panama City, Panama. Batista earned her Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) from Parsons The New School for Design in New York City in 2013, prior to which she earned her Bachelors of Fine Arts (BFA) from the University of Miami in 2009.

No Commission Miami 2017 casts a thematic light on “Island Might”, which suggests the power and possibility, tradition and future of a place and its people. We examine family, land & sea, ritual, revolution and color as elemental forces that can illuminate the roadmap for a more generous, stable fate.

The injection of immersive music performances from collaborator BACARDÍ shakes up the traditional art fair, creating a unique culture experience for visitors. Past performers have included Alicia Keys, Major Lazer, A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, DMX, Pusha T and more. There are also some fantastic artist profiles of individuals who have gone on to find tremendous success following their No Commission exhibitions.

No Commission Miami is the sixth in a series of artist support collaborations. Past editions were held in Miami, New York, London, Shanghai and Berlin where artworks were sold and artists retained 100% of sales proceeds. The No Commission platform is realized through a partnership between BACARDÍ, Swizz Beatz, and The Dean Collection in their continued support of cultural visionaries around the world.

Join us Wednesdays for live jazz under the stars featuring Miami local music luminaries living in our midst. These shows are each Wednesday from 8 pm – 11 pm for free at The Yard and are curated by Chad Bernstein of Guitars Over Guns.

On Wednesday, November 29th, pianist Tal Cohen pays us a very special visit at The Yard. Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He later moved to Australia, where he received a music scholarship from Churchlands Senior High School. He continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a bachelor’s degree and masters in jazz performance. He began performing nationally, including Sydney’s 505 and Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane and Uptown jazz clubs. In the same year, he also performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone. In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet”. That same year, Cohen released his first album as a leader “Yellow Sticker”. He’s currently studying at the University of Miami, where he’s had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa. We can proudly call him a local.

In July 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” which featured Australia’s Jamie Oehlers on saxophone as well as highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig, and Sam Anning on bass. The group then went on to record the album “Smoke and Mirrors” after which the group toured around Australia in August 2012. Tal has also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist, Bob Hurst in Melbourne and Perth shows in June 2012, alongside Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Jacob Evans.

November 25 at 8 PM: Felipe Lamoglia is a Grammy-winning saxophonist, composer and arranger. Born and educated in Cuba, he is a graduate of the prestigious Superior Institute of Art (ISA).

In 1999 Lamoglia relocated to the U.S. where he immediately began performing with the late Celia Cruz. In 2001 he began playing with Grammy winner Arturo Sandoval. Sandoval’s CD “Rumba Palace,” on which Felipe arranged and played, won a Grammy. In 2004 he joined Grammy winner Gonzalo Rubalcaba, recording on his Grammy-nominated album, Paseo (Blue Note). He also recorded on Ignacio Berroa’s Grammy-nominated album, “Codes.”

Felipe has shared the stage with musical giants such as Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker, Wynton Marsalis, Eldar, Dafnis Prieto, Ignacio Berroa and many others, participating in Major Jazz Festivals in the U.S. and abroad including JVC, Playboy, Newport, Henieken Jazz, Red Sea and in venues such as Blue Note, Iridium, Jazz Standard, Yoshi’s, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola and many more.

The Children’s Bereavement Center (CBC), with sponsors Vitas Healthcare, New York Life, Kaufman Rossin, and Royal Caribbean International, is excited to announce the return of its community event, Steps for Healing 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, November 18, 2017.
Check-in/ registration starts at 6:30 a.m. and the race begins at approximately 8 a.m. Begin your morning with a nice run or walk around the zoo and end it with a free breakfast and a stellar Kids Fun Run (obstacle course) at 9:00 a.m. The Kids Fun Run welcomes kids (Ages 3 to 7). Each tiny racer will receive a race t-shirt and a finisher medal!

Taking the “killer shoe” to the next level, Fantich & Young merge fine art, fashion and design to present luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items to represent Darwin’s notion of “survival of the fittest” and call into question controversial social issues dealing with the free market economy.

Barrett Barrera Projects, a St. Louis-based multidisciplinary consulting company specializing in arts, culture and contemporary fashion, is returning to Miami Art Week to present FANTICH & YOUNG: APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO as one of the art installations the company will unveil in Wynwood during Art Basel from December 7 to 10, 2017.

Simulating a luxury lifestyle boutique, APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO is a conceptual pop-up exhibition employing multimedia sculpture, photographic prints and a promotional advertising campaign to present a primeval yet contemporary collection that merges the creative disciplines of fine art, design and fashion.

Mariana Fantich, born and raised in the Ukraine, is an artist and digital media specialist and Dominic Young is an English musician and artist. Since 2008 they have collaborated under the name Fantich & Young and are currently based in London’s East End. The duo juxtaposes and manipulates symbolic ready-made objects – including Saville Row suits and Jimmy Choo shoes – in order to parallel both natural and social evolution, calling into question the theory of natural selection with nods to ceremonial ritual and the supernatural – a concept they term Darwinian Voodoo. Their Apex Predator project, an outgrowth of Darwinian Voodoo, was inspired by the 2008 financial crisis. Luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items such as teeth, bones, and hair represent the banking community and its escape from criminal prosecution. The financiers thus become the titular Apex Predator – topping the food chain, facing no real threat and possessing perhaps a touch of the supernatural.

Designed for ‘‘the discerning client with the taste for power and exclusivity,” the Apex Predator collection includes shoes, masks, two-piece ensembles, perfume and other meticulously embellished accessories. All items in this luxury retail exhibition will be sold as limited-edition art sculpture (not meant to be worn as fashion items) with prices ranging from $2,000 for the “killer shoes” – a pair of black stilettos featuring soles made of teeth – to $45,000 for “Female and Male Superhumans.”

If the free-market economy is indeed a forum where only the strongest survive, and our urban habitats are a brutal jungle, Fantich & Young’s Darwinian Voodoo seems to perfectly address the needs of an exclusive clientele who reside at the very top of our society’s food chain.
