AQUA Art Miami, a sister fair of Art Miami, will celebrate its 13th edition this year at the AQUA Hotel in Miami Beach. A VIP Preview will be held on Wednesday, December 6 before the fair opens its doors to the public December 7-10.

The fair is a must-attend destination for influential collectors and art professionals to discover fresh talent and acquire works from emerging and mid-career artists. This year, 51 international exhibitors will present exciting works in intimate exhibition rooms that open onto the classic South Beach hotel’s beautiful courtyard.

Through the years, AQUA Art Miami has solidified itself as a unique event that stays true to its signature ‘relaxed-yet-energetic’ vibe, which is why it remains a favorite gathering spot for both seasoned and new collectors to view and purchase art of the highest quality while exchanging cultural ideas and forming meaningful connections. Once again, the fair will host spellbinding performance pieces while exhibiting a curated selection of special projects. This year, AQUA Art Miami will shine a spotlight on fashion and style and its distinct relationship to contemporary art, through standout projects that include:

AQUA Lobby Pop Up presented by Cindy Lisica Gallery (Houston)
The pop up shop will display a curated selection of original artwork, photography, limited edition prints, books and collectible art objects.

BE ART by Laura Kimpton presented by HG Contemporary (New York)
Kimpton, Burning Man breakout star, has created a 16-foot tall sculpture that embraces the centuries-old practice of art honoring intellectuals, artists and men of power by mimicking a traditional Roman marble bust. Her gold bust of a female monkey wearing a gold-plated necklace that proudly exclaims BE ART will welcome guests.

Live Tattoo Art by Thea Duskin presented by Ghostprint Gallery (Richmond)
Duskin is renowned for her exquisite watercolor tattoos and will provide live performances at select times throughout the fair, where in addition to working on large, pre-scheduled pieces, Duskin will offer fairgoers the opportunity to acquire an original one-off, single-session tattoo that can be completed in a short amount of time. Priced at $500, they will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Art from Canada presented by the Consulate General of Canada (Miami)
2017 marks Canada’s 150th anniversary since Confederation, and to celebrate, the Consulate General of Canada has spearheaded a curated project by Tranter-Sinni Gallery to highlight works from emerging and established Canadian artists from diverse backgrounds to reflect the rich regional range of Canada’s multiculturalism. Participating artists include Barbara Steinman, John Brown, Paterson Ewen, Wolfgang Kals, Jay Bell Red Bird, Russell Leng, Halina Stopyra, Andrew Maize and Christopher Gorey.

Talk with Art from Canada Artists – Saturday, December 9th at 2pm
On Saturday, December 9th at 2pm, the Consulate General of Canada in Miami and Tranter-Sinni Gallery will host an up-close and personal talk with two artists showing work at AQUA. Jay Bell Red Bird will speak about Canada’s aboriginal people – how they once lived, and continue to live, as loving, caring and peaceful people. He will talk about his time spent with Canadian artist Norval Morrisseau, and how great Canadian artists, including his father, Duke Redbird, have influenced his style and technique. Halina Stopyra will then discuss her work from a healing arts perspective, as well as her technique and intrinsic ability to heal through nature, each other and the universe.

AQUA Moments presented by Black Ship (Miami)
AQUA Moments will re-imagine space through sound, architecture, scent and the visual arts to create new environments that engage audiences to identify with all aspects of their surroundings by curation that stimulates and provokes multisensory satisfaction. As part of this program, multimedia performance artist Bea Pernia will provide the musical atmosphere for the VIP Preview.

AQUA Hotel Lobby exhibit featuring BAS Kosters presented by Rademakers Gallery (Amsterdam)
Artist and fashion designer Bas Kosters believes that fashion transforms, and as you wear a garment you become part of the art. His illustrations, drawings, paintings and graphic designs all work their way into his fashion creations. His work is a warning about alarming social issues by means of dark humor, while endeavoring to create enthusiasm and happiness on the other hand.

“Which Comes First, the Art or the Fashion?” presented by Morphew (New York)
Fashion and art always have been collaborators, and to this end, Morphew presents an art gallery and shop to showcase the ways in which these two worlds coexist through offering the most avant-garde 20th century designers and artists of luxury vintage fashion. The space will feature an installation dedicated to Keith Haring and his Pop Shop, as well as a collaboration with Kara Ross and Unleashed, where three original Bindi works utilizing vintage textiles will celebrate a collective of artisan women from Bareilly, India who are experts in the art of hand beading. These pieces were created through Unleashed’s work as a global social impact brand that provides women the opportunity to break the poverty cycle through education and job creation.

Florida Foster Care Review promotes the safety, well-being and long-term success of abused and neglected children through volunteer-driven case reviews and system level advocacy. Faena Art announces the next edition of the art installation ángeles veloces arcanos fugaces, an immersive, participatory and site-specific work created by ‘assume vivid astro focus (avaf)’. The installation re-imagines a roller dancing rink as an art experience and includes a line-up of DJs and performers who will activate the roller rink with their own practice while the public is invited to dance and skate within the installation. This participatory work establishes a new platform for social interaction in the Faena Forum. The New World Symphony will transform into a glowing alternative universe for Alien Jungle to kick off the momentous 30th Anniversary season! The esteemed Fontsquared has been appointed the curators of the fair. The husband and wife artist team, Ignacio and Jean Font ( https://fontsquared.org ), aim to create a uniform work of art by considering shape, form and color in their careful selection of works.

A highlight of “Fridge Art Fair Miami: The Art Bagel Edition” is the “Fridge Magnet Project.” This project, open to all artists and art lovers, invites participants to create a magnet to be displayed during the fair. On Sunday, September 24, the Global Arts Project and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association will present their last FREE ArtScape concert of the season from 4-7 PM, in Collins Park, 2100 Collins Ave, starring singer Lisett Morales, “La Mulata del Sabor,” celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The program will open with a set by students of Gremmy-winning musician and educator Dr Ed Calle, as part of Global Arts Project’s Educational Outreach Program.

Lisett Morales arrived in Miami from her native Cuba and quickly rose to stardom singing for president George W. Bush at The Miami Arena. Lisett made her Off-Broadway debut as an Actress with “Celia (The Life and Music of Celia Cruz).” This role landed her as the lead singer of the “Celia Cruz All Stars”.

She has shared the stage with famous artists such as Jose Alberto “el Canario,” Oscar de Leon, La India, Albita, Tito Puente Jr., Isaac Delgado, Marlow Rosado, Willy Chirino, Domingo Quiñones and many more.

Salsa dancers will perform, sharing the dance floor with the audience.

There will be a Farmer’s Market courtesy of The Market Company, and tents by local food vendors:

Timmy Regisford is simply put, one of the great legends of dance music. The inception of his internationally acclaimed Club Shelter parties in NYC since 1991 helped pioneer the soulful house music sound that has shaped the face of house music today.

Trinidad-born, Regisford is known for his brand of soulful dance music. He started in 1985 at WBLS radio station in New York City, where he worked as Assistant Music Director, later being promoted to head Music Director of the station. In 1988, he became A&R Director of Atlantic Records, signing such acts as Miki Howard and Levert. His next career step embarked on working for MCA Records as their A&R Director, where he developed artists Loose Ends and Colonel Abrams. He would soon go on to sign acts Guy and Eric B & Rakim. Regisford later became Vice President of A&R at Motown Records, signing acts Milira, Blaze, Basic Black, Today, and Johnny Gill. Along with his A&R work for these labels he is credited in many remix projects with Patti LaBelle, Steel Pulse, New Edition, Bobby Womack, Gladys Knight & the Pips, The Boys, Diana Ross, Gerald Alston and Stevie Wonder. In 1996, Regisford became Vice President of A&R at Dreamworks Records. Timmy Regisford was also one of the founding people behind the Shelter parties in New York City, as well as the resident DJ.

Dark Sky: The Scholar Series

On Friday, August 18, the eco-conscious 1 Hotel South Beach will unveil their monthly Dark Sky series with a brand-new addition – The Scholar Series, featuring environmental educators speaking to today’s most pressing eco-focused issues. Kicking it off this Friday Aug. 18 at 7 p.m., Dr. Wallace J. Nichols will join the hotel in their monthly Dark Sky event by dimming the lobby lights to raise awareness for global brightening.

The night will continue with a special lecture by Dr. Nichols in the Terra Ballroom, explaining the remarkable truth about the benefits of being in, on, under or simply near water. Dr. Nichols is an entrepreneurial scientist, marine biologist, water advocate and author of New York Times bestseller “Blue Mind,” New York Times bestselling author. The famed scientist will be available for book signings and meet and greets after the lecture. The night continues with Los Classicos de Cuba performing live in the lobby until 11:30.

Dark Sky celebration at Tom on Collins in the lobby from 8 – 11 p.m. will offer a specialty cocktail, “Eclipse Over Collins”, available both at the bar and at Watr on the 1 Rooftop. Suggested donations go to Surfrider Foundation Miami Chapter, supporting clean water and healthy beaches.

What: Fashion students from Miami International University of Art & Design (MIU) to kick off Swim Week with their Swim/Resort Collection during 2017 Swim Fashion Week. Over 40 future student designers will showcase their creativity and skill with Swim/Resort Wear collection.

Additionally, MIU fashion students have created one-of-a-kind signature crafted resort/swimwear from McDonald’s packaging and paper goods. From Happy Meal haute couture to French fry box cover ups and hamburger wrapper hoodies, this unique McDCouture collection for both men and women will be featured during the school’s annual Swim Fashion Show.

Students from MIU have been hungry for another McDonald’s unconventional fashion challenge since their 2015 McDCouture fashion show whet the appetites of fashionistas around the world. This year, McDonald’s invited students to submit design concepts for men’s and women’s swimwear and is offering a $5000 scholarship for the best signature crafted design. The 20 most innovative looks were selected to be presented as part of the school’s Swim 2017 Fashion Show on Thursday, July 20. The aspiring designers utilized more than 7,000 McDonald’s sandwich wrappers, 2,800 fry boxes, 2,800 straws, 825 soft drink cups, 225 Happy Meal boxes, 2900 sandwich boxes, 1000 Sriracha sauce lids and 300 McFlurry cups to create their McDCouture Swimwear for the runway.

For the sixth year in a row — every Wednesday in July — Executive Chef Adonay Tafur and Chef Joshua Gripper will host a backyard throw down at The Dutch in the W South Beach Hotel & Residences. Chefs will craft a mouth-watering BBQ feast served up family-style, along with homemade pies and treats by Pastry Chefs Jaclyn Marshal and Richard Vaughn.

The weekly event will take place from 6:30PM to 10PM in The Dutch’s very own backyard, the Grove. Kicking-off July 5th, guests can enjoy a delicious array of themed BBQ’s for only $40 per person, including tax and gratuity; excluding beverages.

This year is going to be extra special, as New Orleans takes over The Dutch Miami with one of Food & Wine’s “Best New Chefs in America” 2017, Chef Nina Compton of Compére Lapin will close out the series

Batuke Samba Funk has quickly become one of South Florida’s favorite party bands in the last few years. The group mixes rhythms from Brazilian samba and with classic 70s American funk. The goal of Batuke is to “brazilianize” American sounds, and “Americanize” Brazilian sounds in a perfectly balanced fusion. The band is formed by several of Miami’s top Brazilian musicians including bassist and composer Diogo Brown, guitarist Cezar Santana and singer Mari Mac. They have performed with top Brazilian artists like Vanessa da Mata, and also James Brown’s legendary sax player Pee Wee Ellis. In its 16th year, the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB)’s Miami Spice Restaurant Program returns with its popular Miami Spice Mash-Up series. The popular dinners will once again unite some of the city’s most beloved chefs for a night filled with indulgent dishes previewing their upcoming Miami Spice menus.

The first installment will take place on Thursday, June 22, 2017. Three of the city’s hottest waterfront dining destinations will team up for one-night-only – Chefs Raul A. Del Pozo of Lightkeepers at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami and Nicolas Mazier of TATEL at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach, will join forces with Paula DaSilva at her newly opened waterfront oasis, Artisan Beach House located at The Ritz-Carlton, Bal Harbour.

Together, they will craft a savory three-course, family-style meal featuring selections from each restaurant’s upcoming Miami Spice menus exclusively available August through September. Priced at $75 per person (excluding tax, tip and additional beverage purchases) the preview dinner will include complimentary pours from Miami Spice sponsors Chandon California, Stella Artois, Terrazas de los Andes and FIJI Water.

Join us each and every Monday night as we dance Bachata, Salsa, and more at Miami’s first ice bar and cocktail lounge located in the heart of Miami Beach! After all that dancing, cool down in our 100,000 pound ice bar where you can drink out of glasses made of ice! Everyone is welcome (no previous experienced required, we will teach you everything you need to know)

8:15PM – 9:15PM: Bachata/Salsa Dance Class with the incredible Pedro De Los Rios! No partner needed, just show up ready to dance and we will take care of the rest!

9:15PM onward: Guests will dance the night away as DJ MIke Calderon brings the good vibes and best music. Everyone is welcome to join us for this!
