The location for “Art Will Save You” is a private residence, on the 28th floor of the Park Place By The Bay tower. It is the home of Lucas Monsalve, a close friend of artist Renda Writer.

When you arrive at the main entrance, just tell the doorman that you are here to see Lucas Monsalve. You don’t need to (and shouldn’t) say anything about a “party” or “art show.” You’re just “here to see Lucas.” ;)

You can also bypass the whole doorman scenario by entering through the side entrance. If you would like to do this, just send a text message to Renda Writer (310-404-4184) or Lucas (786-693-0743) saying that you are downstairs, and someone will come down to get you.

– Metered parking located in the streets surrounding the building. Also, a small parking lot with metered parking and about 30 spaces at the building. Don’t forget to pay your meter.
– Located within walking distance of bars, restaurants, and nightclubs, such as Will Call, Club Space, Mekka, America Airlines Arena, Adrienne Arsht Center.

Over 250 pieces of art will be on display and available for sale at a series of Saturday night private art shows that will take place in September, on the 14th, 21st, and 28th of the month.

The three private art shows, located at a private residence in downtown Miami, are scheduled to run from 7pm until 12am each night and are open to art buyers and art appreciators of all ages who RSVP with an email to privateartshow@gmail.com.

All RSVP emails must state (1) the number of people in the party (2) full names for everyone in the party (3) the date of the show they’d like to attend, and (4) time of arrival (between 7pm and 12am). Within 24 hours you will receive an email response to confirm your RSVP and reservation that will contain the address for the event and information for parking, directions, etc. Please include a phone number to receive a text message reminder the day of the event.

All attendees for all three private art shows will receive one free art print (while supplies last). Limited free refreshments will be available. Admission is free. Donations are appreciated. Most of the art on display will be priced between $10 and $50, with a few pieces priced between $300 and $500, and one piece that is $2,000, so there is something for everyone and everyone’s individual budgets.

All of the art on display is the work of Renda Writer, a known figure on the South Florida arts scene for almost a decade. Renda has played many roles in the local art scene, including spoken word poet, art magazine vice president and chief editor, as well as producer, host, and promoter of art and music events and open mic nights. He added “visual artist” to the list of roles he plays when he first started making art in late 2010, or, as Renda puts it, “I started making art when everything else stopped making sense. Art became my catharsis when everything I knew started to shift.” After nearly three years of creating, Renda is now ready to exhibit his entire body of work.

Most of the art on display will be what Renda Writer calls his “Handwritten Found Object Art.” This is his own personal take on the found object art genre. He writes on what he finds… a BMW hubcap, an air conditioning vent, a few metal reel-to-reel plate, some random street signs, a calendar from the salon industry, tons of furniture wood, chunks of drywall, some old records, a ceiling tile, a kitchen cabinet door. These are just some of the things that Renda has repurposed with the written word. He uses various colors of paint markers, and writes poems, phrases, aphorisms, and stream of consciousness musings that convey ideas and themes of wit, hope, humor, and curiosity.

In addition to the “Handwritten Found Object Art,” Renda will also be exhibiting three other styles of art, which include (1) his line of “Renda Writer Jewelry,” words and ideas written on necklace charms, (2) pieces from his original “Handwritten Art” series from 2010-2011, framed sheets from a small yellow legal pad, covered with poetry and stream of consciousness thoughts, all written in blue ink, in his signature small handwritten print and (3) pieces from the “Renda Hitz Hearts” collection, an ongoing collaboration project with his friend, Billy Hitz, where the two men create eye-catching heart-shaped pieces of art and interior design accents out of carpet.

Renda is naming the private art show series “Art Will Save You” because, as he says, “Art has saved me in many ways… ways I can’t even really explain. To me, that’s what art does. It saves you. It saves the artist who makes it, the people who view it, and the people who buy it and incorporate it into their homes, and their lives. It changes you, influences you, inspires you, and… saves you.”

Announcing the First Annual “Pink Flamingo Awards” for Community Excellence 9/17/13

The LGBT Visitor Center will present the first annual “Pink Flamingo Awards” to honor 10 people and organizations that have made Miami Beach one of the top 20 places to visit among LGBT tourists, according to The Advocate magazine. Karen Brown, executive director of the LGBT Visitor Center, made the announcement calling the “Pink Flamingo Awards” a similar concept to the People’s Choice Awards because the winners will be voted on by tourists who have visited the Center as well as locals who frequent the Center for community events and activities. The awards are sponsored by American Airlines, the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Tourist Board of Curacao and will be held Tuesday, September 17, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Palm Ballroom of the Miami Beach Convention Center.

In addition to the awards, the luncheon will honor past and present city leaders who supported the LGBT Visitor Center concept and paved the way for the MDGLCC Foundation to lease the first floor of Old City Hall to house both the LGBT Visitor Center and the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. Among those being recognized are Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower, the Miami Beach City Commission and former City Commissioners Saul Gross and Victor Diaz who were instrumental in the opening of the LGBT Visitor Center almost three years ago.

“Many people in the community don’t realize that the LGBT Visitor Center is a stand-alone organization under the non-profit MDGLCC Foundation,” said Brown. “We are partially funded by grants for the work that we do to serve our tourists and our community, but we need the community’s support to raise funds to bridge the gap between what we need and what the grants don’t cover. So many locals enjoy the programming at the Center and so many local non-profits benefit from us being here that I honestly think we should change the name of the place to the ‘LGBT Visitor and Community Center’.”

The Pink Flamingo Awards will be a truly interactive experience, according to Brown. Not only will supporters of the LGBT Visitor Center select the winners of the awards, but also the event will feature a unique, interactive silent auction to help raise funds for the Center’s operations. Included in the silent auction will be a trip for two to Las Vegas including accommodations at the Cosmopolitan Resort, original artwork by David Bromstad, a Regions Bank bicycle, a gift certificate from the Art of Shaving, and more.

Finalists for the Pink Flamingo Awards were chosen by a secret blue-ribbon panel of experts, according to Brown. Voters from around the world will determine the winners based on the ballots cast at www.gogaymiami.com and everyone is encouraged to vote for his or her favorites. Winners will be announced at the luncheon.

Tickets to the Pink Flamingo Awards luncheon are $60 each which includes lunch, a gift bag and a raffle ticket for the grand prize drawing of two tickets on American Airlines and a four-night stay at the Sandton Kurá Hulanda Hotel in Curacao, courtesy of the Curacao Tourist Board. To purchase tickets, visit www.gogaymiami.com or call 305-397-8914.

Synopsis:
It is December 1936 and Broadway star William Gillette, admired the world over for his leading role in the play Sherlock Holmes, has invited his fellow cast members to his Connecticut castle for a weekend of revelry. But when one of the guests is stabbed to death, the festivities in this isolated house of tricks and mirrors quickly turn dangerous. Then it’s up to Gillette himself, as he assumes the persona of his beloved Holmes, to track down the killer before the next victim appears. The danger and hilarity are non-stop in this glittering whodunit set during the Christmas holidays.

Art, music and fashion fuse at the epicenter of Miami’s cultural crossroads, during the Downtown Development Authorities’ DWNTWN Art Days. McCormick Place will offer an evening of multi-sensory experiences stimulated by fine dining, art and jazz, from 6:00pm – 10:00pm, transitioning through fashion installations into a DJ party scene, from 10:00pm – 3:00am. McCormick Place, in Downtown Miami, has morphed into an art and culture hub featuring artist studios, gallery and event venue space. The vertical 22,000 sq ft space will allow guests to explore three floors of artwork, while engaging with renowned artists.

Teaming up for a second year, McCormick Place and Influence Communications are bringing Downtown Miami an event and venue space that will continue to impact the overall growth of our community. Last year’s grand opening event hosted over 1,500 guests, who enjoyed burlesque performances, live art installations, DJ sets and a gallery filled with works from renowned artists such as Stephen Gamson and Eleazar Delgado.

“McCormick Place is honored to host the largest party of the year in Downtown Miami. Events focusing on art, history and culture experiences are essential to the vitality of a sustainable and ever evolving community.” – Sean McCormick

The event benefits Save Our Sisters, a local 501(c)3 organization, dedicated to breast health awareness, making this event a kick-off to October’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Artists from South Florida and beyond will occupy an 8000 square foot warehouse and alternative exhibition space, creating new works that hang from the rafters, conform to, and are inspired by the unique site. Installation art, mixed media, Sculpture, Video art, and Interactive works are included.

29 artists were selected through a part juried, part invitational process. The artists are linked by their fresh approaches to the ROUGH & TUMBLE theme: “characterized by violent, random, disorderly action and struggles, unrestrained, marked by bursts of destructive force or intense activity,” and “an unorganized collection or mixture of various things, described as Raw, Textured, Volatile, and/or Arbitrary, Hybrid forms.”

The exhibition is housed within “The Projects North,” in FAT Village ARTS District, the leading exhibition space for monthly art walks in Fort Lauderdale. There will be two public receptions, on Aug. 31 & Sept. 28, as part of the monthly (4th Saturday) art walk in FAT Village, which spans 4 square blocks and is populated with artist’s studios, galleries & other creative businesses. To see images of a few previous exhibits in the space, go to http://www.fatvillageprojects.com/

The closing reception for Rough & Tumble, on Oct. 5, will be part of the 4th Annual ART FALLOUT Event. ART FALLOUT is a collaboration between Girls Club Art Collection, 1310 Gallery, The Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, FAT Village Arts District, 3rd Avenue artists, and other local venues. There will be a shuttle bus rotating between each of these locations. Multiple venues will host their own new art exhibitions simultaneously for one night, and all events will be FREE, and open to the public. ART FALLOUT venues are unified in the mission to bring greater awareness to the thriving art scene within the downtown Fort Lauderdale area, as well as celebrate the Broward County Cultural Division’s designation of October as “a month for art,” supporting the production and presentation of contemporary art in the local community.

Noel Aquino will be highlighting some of his personal favorite pieces while revealing his latest project.

Alexia Fodere will be unveiling her latest photographic series ‘Curves’ which features 15 photographs that gives you a different perspective on the contour of the female body.

The artists…
Artist Noel Aquino www.noelaquinoart.com
Artist Noel Aquino was born and raised in Varadero, Cuba, and now resides in Florida. When Aquino was nine years old, an artist from Varadero Community Art Center noticed his talent, and persuaded him to attend classes at the center. After two years of training, his instructors encouraged him to apply to The Matanzas School of Art. Aquino was accepted to the school, and spent the next three years there refining his creative abilities and learning about art history. Much of his time at the school was spent under the tutelage of several nationally, and internationally recognized Cuban artists.

At the age of 20, the passion of youth and a non-conformist attitude towards life were reflected in Aquino’s work, and also led him to leave Cuba for the United States. Although he produced many pieces while a young man in Cuba, it has been in the U.S. where he has created the vast majority of his body of work. Much of Aquino’s early material was of the realistic nature, and included intricately detailed landscapes, and portraits. He then moved into a surrealistic period, gradually arriving at his present style, which he describes as “contemporary modernism”.

Aquino has had numerous (solo and group) shows in the Miami, and Tampa Bay areas of Florida, and in Michigan. He has sold well over 400 pieces, and his works are part of private collections in the US, Canada, Europe, and Latin America.

Noel’s Artist Statement
Like all evolving artists I have gone through various styles and phases; my present approach to painting incorporates the components of form, space, color, and texture, resulting in works that could best be described as contemporary-modernism. I don’t begin my pieces with a sketch, or an image of something tangible in my head, instead I tap into very basic internal emotions, and incorporate those inner perspectives into my process, effectively using my paint and brush, to translate and record, the “language of my mind” onto the canvas. This is not however, to say that I don’t use my artistic skills, but that I integrate those talents into my method in combination with what flows from my subconscious. I then analyze and “play” with the canvas until I feel that a work is complete. This technique is in essence what gives life to my art.

Once I have completed a painting, the images on the canvas oftentimes evoke feelings of something familiar to the viewer- these perceptions are usually based on a particular object (or set of objects) the individual may have seen in his or her own life. And although, it is not necessarily my intent to induce these perceptions, I do realize that they are in part what draws people to my work, and connects them to the pieces. This in turn brings greater inspiration for my expression; ultimately adding to my intrinsic motivation to paint.

Alexia Fodere www.omegaeye.com
Alexia speaks……
I shape the experience of and interior space with my perception of the light, it’s intensity, it’s amplitude, and its angle. Thrusting the objects in front of my camera in its way, just as the wind would do. Also, the proper balance of the subjects plays a central role enhancing the Designer idea.

Alexia’s work has been published in: Architectural Digest, Florida Design Home & Decor, Florida Design International, Florida Design Palm Beach, Casa & Estilo, Blueprint Directory, Loft, Inside Out, Electronic House, Miami Herald Home, DIning Out and Elle Decor.

The 76TH art installation of for artists BY ARTISTS will feature one of Miami’s most “prolific” artist. Eva Ruiz will be joining us on Sunday, August 18, 2013 at Haven Lounge with a digital presentation. Enjoy a night fused with music, food and art.

EVA RUIZ www.evaruizlandoflotus.com

Eva Ruiz was born in Bogota, Colombia, she spent her childhood in different cities and towns of her native country and moved to Miami at an early age. Even though she loved drawing as was a child, she decided to start her career in the arts in 2003. Wanting to find a place where she could express herself completely, she found an infinite world of possibilities when she picked up the brush, she found a part of her self that was missing. She is a self taught artist who loves to play and experiment with different mediums, porcelain, collage and jewelry.

‘Art has been a personal and spiritual journey for me, every person has a way to deal with everything that life brings, I have found that experiences that are painful, can be transformed into the most beautiful expression of love, I have grown because of them and I wish to share that transformation of energy and thought in my work. I am inspired by music, nature, love, silence… life is very inspiring when we look deeper and stay curious.

My work is focused on love and change, I choose to see the beauty around me, we need to acknowledge it and share it, change doesn’t happen by it self, we must bring it. Creation is moment of honesty and dreams, it is fueled by curiosity, imagination and infinity.’

Visitors to the area will find a thriving community of artists who open their studios, alternative and creative spaces to the public every third Saturday.

We invite the art-loving public to join us for an evening of art and the opportunity to go behind the scenes and meet the artists in their own studios which normally are only open by appointment.

The Art Walk takes place just east of the Palmetto Expressway’s 40th Street Exit and just south of 40th Street (also known as “Bird Road”).

Enjoy ample free parking, and a complimentary shuttle bus service. Start your Art Walk at any of the participating studios. Click on link for special highlights: http://www.thebirdroadartdistrict.com/Bird-Road-Art-Walk.html

About the Bird Road Art Walk:
The Bird Road Art Walk is organized by an alliance of artists founded in 2010. The member-powered organization promotes and funds experiences that bring artists, art enthusiasts and collectors together. Events include the monthly Bird Road Art Walk, which features open studios, alternative spaces and creative businesses.

Since the 1980s, the Bird Road Art Districts’ slanted warehouses, antique stores and overall industrial vibe have provided a haven for artists. Today visitors will find a thriving community of more than 40 artists and an up and coming art scene, featuring a broad range of contemporary, emerging and established artists working in a variety of mediums.

Rent parties were held frequently during the 1920s in Harlem, New York and the Southern States. It is a social occasion where tenants hire a musician or band to play and pass the hat to raise money to pay their rent, originating in Harlem during the 1920s. Rent parties played a major role in the development of jazz and blues music. We won’t be passing the hat around, but join us for a night of some prohibition era vibes and great live jazz music.

J’ouvert (pronounced “Jou-vay”) is derived from French patois and means ‘daybreak’. Jouvert marks the official start of carnival celebrations. The first revelers hit the streets – jumping, dancing, shouting – abetted, it must be admitted, by the fine local rum, but fueled more by the exhilaration of the occasion. Most revelers usually join sections in which hundreds of people party together with the vibrant sounds of the so-called “engine room” which is comprised of a “core” set of instruments, including the brake iron (discarded car brake drums), shak-shak (shaker), scratcher (a metal guiro), toc-toc (claves), cowbell, and bottle and spoon, drum set, congas, and occasional other instruments as part of the engine room. The brake iron is played with a metal rod to produce a high-pitched sound.

Enter the Miami Rhythm Section in collaboration with the China Mas Group. We are one of a number of Caribbean Carnival Mas bands participating in the Miami-Broward 2013 Jouvert infusion into the cultural consciousness of the South Florida Caribbean Diaspora. Part and parcel of Jouvert is rhythm and steel–The miami Rhythm section represents the so called “engine room” referenced above.

Nestled in the South of Fifth Street neighborhood, the recently launched Parisian piano lounge has carved a nightlife niche for itself as the quintessential, intimate venue for apéritifs and digestifs compliments of an extensive artisanal cocktail menu served in a sophisticated yet cozy jewel box setting.

“It’s all about the before experience,” explains owner Cedric Adegnika, a well-known South Beach nightlife fixture. “In Europe, there is the ‘in-between’, a place you want to go before dinner, the club or bed.”

Every Wednesday, guest pianists, jazz singers and international singer-songwriters will enliven the everlasting cocktail hour. Future shows Leesa Richards, an up-and-coming solo artist who independently released her debut album, “Mother’s Child”, and continues to tour around the county.

Fragments and Passions
My Fragments are stimulated from the passion of one artist to another showing a wide range of influences, including sources from the Renaissance to contemporary artists. Many of these works were the pornography of my childhood, and still today I look at them with the same curiosity of that child abandoned in the library.
My process starts with a collage made with the use of a computer. Observing works of art on the computer gives me the possibility of walking into a piece and stop where it provokes and excites me. The ideal model has already been created and has eternal form. I use it and destroy it purely for aesthetic reasons, recovering and bringing it out from the darkness, releasing it from its Baroque frame and putting it into contemporary context.

THE LIVE ARITSTS…..

REBECCA BARBA

Born and raised in South Florida, Rebecca Barba is a first generation Cuban-American.

Since the tender age of 3, Rebecca showed signs of creativity. Throughout her early education, she excelled in her art courses, receiving accolades in both school and community-sponsored art competitions. Rebecca earned a Minor in Visual Arts from Florida International University in 1995.

In 2007, she was fortunate to meet and be inspired by visual artist, Pablo Contrisciani, he helped un-lock her expressionistic style. As an artist, her style has evolved through the years, mastering mediums such as: pencil, charcoals, watercolors, pastels and acrylics. Her most recent creations are interpretations of moments in the artist’s life expressed in passionate energized brush strokes of captivating hues. GUEST EXHIBITOR – MIGUEL PAREDES

Miguel Paredes was born in New York in 1966. He is an artist and urban realist who combines the exhilarating sense of New York graffiti art with the skill and perceptiveness of a truly exceptional artist.

Growing up on 72nd Street in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, Paredes exuded early signs of artistic ability and accepted an invitation to New York City’s prestigious Fiorello La Guardia High School of Music and Art – immortalized in the musical and movie Fame – in the early 1980s. His studies at Fiorello coincided with the explosion of street culture in the city. Paredes drew inspiration from notorious pop artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring and plunged headlong into the world of graffiti and pop art taking the name “Mist” as his moniker.

Another influential figure in Paredes’ artistic career is his mentor, Ronnie Cutrone. Cutrone was Andy Warhol’s immediate assistant at the Factory during the notorious pop artist’s most productive and prestigious years. To Paredes, his mentor’s paintings are the essence of pop: colorful, lively and highly accessible. Cutrone’s constant use of bright and fluorescent colors not only influenced Warhol’s return to such hues, but shaped Paredes’ color palette choices as well. Paredes’ piece “Ronnie is that you?

Announcing Dressed for Success as the official charity of the 2013 Great Grove Bed Race. The board of directors and subcommittee created for just this event promises to outdo itself in bed decor and dress and takes their racing as seriously as fundraising for their cause. Fortunately, Dressed for Success can now “suit-up” for the bed race. Five years of heated racing during peak hurricane season has blown the race – permanently – to the first Sunday of November; a cooler and more appropriately ‘suited’ time of the year. The Event producers and the Grove Merchant Group are simultaneously announcing the date move to cool down the overheated racers for the years to come.

Homemade beds race down the streets of Coconut Grove. The origins of bed racing date back three decades with this being the fifth anniversary of the Great Grove Bed Race with its Fast-Signs-fast-track and professional speed-way style play-by-play and on-site live radio with Celebrity Grand Marshall each year.

Proceeds go to Dress for Success Worldwide is an international non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of women located in more than 125 cities across 15 countries. They provide professional clothing, employment retention programs and ongoing support to their clients showing faith in every woman’s ability to be self-sufficient and successful in her career.

Announced today recording Artist and Rapper, Flo Rida, will get in bed with racers from across MIami Dade County as Grand Marshal for the “Great Grove Bed Race”. He joins celebrity judges, Mayor Thomas Regalado, local Miami Grammy winner Karina Iglesias of The Voice, and Commissioner Sarnoff for this year’s mattress madness. MC’s of the bed-to-bed race offs is KVJ morning show of 97.3 FM the Coast. The 2013 competition of racing homemade beds through the streets of Coconut Grove will benefit Dress for Success Miami.

Born and raised in Miami, Flo Rida released his first album in 2008 that featured hit songs such as “Low” featuring T-Pain and “Right Round” featuring Kesha. Both songs reached the top of the charts and held their position at number one for several weeks. His latest album “Perfect 10” will be released before the years end. Get ready to get down “Low” with our Grand Marshal!

“I love my fans, so when I get the chance to interact with them, it’s beautiful.” said Flo Rida, “growing up in South Florida, I’ve always known, before I had a record deal, that the thing is to go out and put on the show. I’ve been doing that from day one and so have these race producers. I can’t wait to be a part of the totally different kind of show.

The event will take place on Bayshore Drive by Peacock Park. Ingenuity has always been the key component of the races. Entries in recent years have depicted everything from a bed-ridden President Obama to last years top prizewinner a Victorian Themed bed by The Olfactory Company complete with white powder and wigs. Like any other 5k or tri-athalon for charity; the Bed Racers will fundraise beginning in August and throughout the fall season, with a 5-man race team and an additional 5-man pit crew, sending emails and encouraging attendees to sponsor and donate to their teams.

“We are thrilled to have been selected as this years charitable beneficiary”, said Board of Director President, Gailen David. “Each woman is a success story and a platform, like the bed race, lets us tell it in a truly unique and fun way”.

The day starts with a family pajama party at 11 am with free games, Billy the Marlin, a kid’s race course, interactive race games, acrobatic shows and music. Tickets to the Bed Race are just Five dollars for adults and kids 12 and under free all day. Live music starts on the main stage with a pre-race party zooming into a pit row parade where you can text your vote for Crowd Favorite, which will be the top prize of the day. Grand Marshal Flo Rida and Celebrity judges rate the beds for “Best Artistry”, “Best Engineered”, “Just plain Funniest” and “Most Dressed for Success”. Cox Media Group (CMG) Miami is heating up the races withThe KVJ Morning Show acting as MC’s for the day, Kevin Rolston, Virginia Sinicki and Jason. The racers line up to compete in time trials and move their way into the top 8 for single elimination heats to the speed championship. Top fundraiser gets a one-foot head start on their first heat to help speed them up.

Intermissions with live music and hilarious sponsor performances by Car2Go, The Olfactory Company and a “Biggest Loser “ Competition of Beds sponsored by Lucky 7. Talented musicians and dancers entertain while racers ready for the finals. A bed-to-bed race off if you will. The fastest team in each of the four divisions wins, Women’s, Men’s, Co-Ed and Over 30.

Duvel Single is the lighter golden ale from Duvel. The secret behind the crisp and complex flavors of Duvel Single is Duvel’s commitment to using only the best quality ingredients, and in the complicated and specific brewing and refermentation process that takes more than three months to complete. Once brewed, the brew master and his staff taste each batch after approximately 30 days. At this stage the beer is called “single-fermented.” The beer has Duvel taste but the alcohol and carbonation are lower and the taste is lighter and crisper.

Writing with or for someone else requires what novelist Colum McCann calls “radical empathy,” not just editorial and/or writing skill. In this three-day workshop participants will pair off and exchange stories. So bring a tape recorder and a computer or tablet — anything with a keyboard that will enable you to interview your cohort and then present your version of the story that best defines him or her. We’ll look at some examples of successful commercial collaborations and also try exercises in perception and differing viewpoints – how do you “read” someone else, and then verbalize the results – to kick off the workshop. Registration is now open. For more information, please contact Nicole Swift at nswift@mdc.edu.

Flash NON-fiction is an exciting and nuanced genre full of possibilities and surprises; it encourages writers to be economical and deliberate. The pieces, though diminutive in length, must still contain all the elements of narrative construction. How does a writer compress events and characterization into a few hundred words? Well, come experiment and play! The workshop will be beneficial for those first experimenting with the genre and for those looking to hone their skills. Write short, think long. Why do the words “Miami” and “crime” and “noir” sound so natural together? How would you define “noir,” and how is the Miami kind different from that found anywhere else? What’s so special about Miami, its history, setting, weather, and its salad of inhabitants and their conflicting traditions that has attracted so many crime writers? In this workshop, we’ll investigate these aspects of life in Miami and look at how you can use them to create your own noir crime fiction. We’ll read and discuss short examples by such writers as Charles Willeford, James W. Hall, Les Standiford, John Dufresne, Elmore Leonard, and others. There will be writing exercises in class, and students will bring in copies of their stories or chapters to be workshopped by the class. Registration is now open. In this workshop, we will examine poems both from workshop participants and other poets that exemplify the use of place. We will also ask where is that place? Where is that physical place, that geographical place, and also where is that mental place? Is that place real, nostalgic, dreamt, etc.? Participants will bring to the workshop poems with these themes. Feedback will be given based on the Liz Lerhman method, which focuses feedback beginning from the artist place of inspiration and creative space, then from the reader’s/listener’s perspective—i.e. what the reader thought, felt, assimilated while reading the poem. Lastly, poets will be encouraged to appropriately render their poems out aloud—from their voice, their perspective, their place. Registration is now open. Join us for another look at “Summer Crush”, fresh and nostalgic and as much a part of summer as baseball and watermelon. MANO’s new exhibit “Summer Crush”, pokes at the inner child in all of us reminding us that it’s not just that extra hour of daylight that makes summer so great.

The exhibit integrates many of the elements and mediums that the artist has engaged with over the last several years. In “Summer Crush” , MANO’s beach-goers evoke a sense of nostalgia and memories of more innocent times when White Castle burgers, hot mustangs, and cruising the board walk were the essentials for a perfect summer or was it a summer crush that made everything seem perfect.

MANO Fine Art Project Space:
MANO Fine Art Project Space is the working studio of Miami-based artist MANO and an exhibition and project space for art related events. MANO Fine Art participates in the Bird Road Art Walk, held on the third Saturday of each month.
