Join Savor Tonight’s wine & dine club (non-members are invited, as well) as they visit Tokyo Blue at the Ocean Manor Resort, for an evening of fine wine and gourmet bites, while enjoying breath-taking views of the water. Tokyo Blue has undergone some changes in recent months — Chef Mai (formerly of Nobu) has taken over the kitchen & melds together the cuisines of Japan, Thailand and Peru seamlessly in his updated menu. The restaurant is also under new ownership — and they want to show off these “changes” to the group.

We’ve teamed up with the restaurant to host a wine tasting on the veranda. Find a spot at the high-top tables, sit back and relax in the chairs surrounding the fire pit, learn about some great wines and mingle with the group — you’re in for a special treat.

Cost is $25 in advance (by 4 p.m. on May 20th) or $30 at the door.

This includes a tasting of 5 wines and a series of complimentary hors d’oeuvres.

Wines to be served include:

JP Chenet, “Ice Edition”, France
Pinot Gris, King Estate, Oregon
Chardonnay, Starmont by Merryvale, Carneros CA
Pinot Noir, David Bruce, Santa Maria Valley, CA
Cabernet Sauvignon, Smith & Hook, Central Coast, CA

Hors d’Oeuvres to be served include:
Crispy Bok Choy
Spicy Edamame with Thai spices
Rock Shrimp
Korean Fried Rice with beef and kimchee sauce
Assortment of specialty rolls

Orchestra Miami performs “Masonic Mozart” at Miami’s Historic Scottish Rite Temple
The first in Orchestra Miami’s Discover Miami Through Music Series

Miami’s Scottish Rite Temple: You’ve driven by it a million times passing through downtown, marveled at its lovely & exotic Art Deco exterior, but have you actually been inside? Finally, here’s your opportunity with Orchestra Miami’s inaugural concert of the Discover Miami Through Music series, a series of concerts in Miami’s most interesting and historic landmarks.

The inaugural concert, entitled “Masonic Mozart” is an all-Mozart concert inside Miami’s iconic Scottish Rite Temple. One of history’s most celebrated Masons, Mozart wrote numerous pieces for Masonic Ritual, for his Masonic brothers or based on Masonic symbols. “Masonic Mozart” is your opportunity to hear some of this great music performed in the setting for which it was intended.

The program features Orchestra Miami’s principal clarinetist Richard Hancock in Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet, K. 622 and special guest Dr. Tony Boutté as the tenor soloist in Die Mauerfreude, a cantata for tenor and orchestra. The concert opens with the gorgeous Overture to Die Zauberflöte (the “Masonic”opera) and closes with Mozart’s greatest symphonic achievement, the “Jupiter” Symphony N. 41, K. 551 in C Major. The 39 musicians from Orchestra Miami will be led by Artistic Director Elaine Rinaldi. Following the concert, Miami’s acclaimed historian Dr. Paul George will talk about the Scottish Rite building and the historic Lummus Park neighborhood.

LEAVE A LEGACY© will honor Miami Dade College President Eduardo Padrón with the Community Champion Award at the 16th Annual Donor Next Door Luncheon.

LEAVE A LEGACY© established the Community Champion Award to honor individuals who contribute to the non-profit community and have shown a great commitment to Miami-Dade County through their activism to help the community’s most vulnerable.

Padrón, who was named one of the top 10 college presidents in the United States by Time Magazine, is known for revolutionizing the role of a community college by raising academic standards, offering four-year degrees and a competitive honors program. Today Miami Dade College has more than 170,000 students and graduates more minorities than any other college in the country.

At the Donor Next Door luncheon, City Year Miami Executive Director Said Ishoof will receive the Ruth Shack Leadership Award, which is given to an emerging leader who represents the qualities of ethics, dedication and service embodied by The Miami Foundation’s former president. City Year Miami currently works with students in 17 public schools – elementary, middle and senior high – in Miami-Dade County.

“At City Year, we want to challenge the culture of philanthropy in Miami,” said Isoof, who has been leading the organization since spring 2009. “We need their support to double our impact and play a bigger role in the lives of more students in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.”

The Donor Next Door Luncheon will also honor leading patrons for their philanthropy to 31 charities.

Spiritual leaders from the east and west are converging in South Florida to discuss the universal concept of compassion. It’s a word used often, but how can compassion serve to improve individual lives and communities? During a panel discussion at Florida International University, the public is invited to hear from such respected sources as Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi and Yogi Master Paramahamsa Prajnanananda – Prajnanananda is the 7th lineage leader of the ancient meditative practice Kriya Yoga — one of the oldest and most sacred of the meditative techniques from India.

The theme is Love and Compassion are Our True Nature, An Interfaith Dialogue. Registration begins at 6 p.m., panel commences at 6:30 p.m. and concludes at 9:30 p.m. after audience Q&A.

The purpose of both events is to promote love, compassion and intercultural understanding through a non-political forum where recognized leaders in a variety of traditions can expound on their views to achieving happiness and unity.

The symposium is dedicated to the memory of his Holiness Paramahamsa Hariharananda, the renowned spiritual leader of the Kriya Yoga Institute, and in celebration of his pilgrimage to the west, exactly 40 years ago.

These events are a rare opportunity for interested people to attend public discussions lead by notable leaders in the spiritual realm. Reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by calling 305-247-1960 or via email at institute@kriya.org

Young Performers Light Up the Night for Young Talent Big Dreams Finals
By Michael R. Malone, The Children’s Trust

Before beginning his original spoken word piece for the Young Talent Big Dreams finals, David Woodward paused in front of the microphone and closed his eyes, seeming to disappear.

Then he opened his eyes and launched his emotional performance, a fusion of words and gestures that spoke of the frustration and sometimes fury of the many boys and young men in Woodward’s Little Havana neighborhood who seek to rise above their poverty and shatter the stereotypes that weigh against them.

For his originality and creativity, Woodward, a 16-year-old junior and one of the top writers in his AP English course at SLAM Miami Charter Middle/High School, was named the overall Grand Prize Winner of Young Talent Big Dreams. This year marked the fourth and most ambitious rendition of the countywide talent contest, coordinated by the Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre and sponsored by The Children’s Trust.
The cadre of judges, all professional artists or art critics, chose Woodward over a host of amazingly talented young musicians, dancers, composers and wordsmiths performing in a range of categories, both individual and group. For the top prize, Woodward received $500 in cash and a free trip for two – air fare, hotel and passes – to attend the live American Idol finale in Los Angeles, CA, courtesy of WSVN CH7.
Woodward, who’s been rhyming, rapping and creating original poetry since elementary school, credited his English teacher, Crystal Espinosa, at SLAM for helping him craft his award-winning performance piece. With her guidance, he revised the piece more than twenty times, working steadily on it for more than a month.

“Though I like to write, I wasn’t much of a reader before. The experience of competing in YTBD really taught me about perfecting my writing craft,” said Woodward, nicknamed the “silent assassin” by his classmates for the riveting power and precision infused in his work.

Winners were chosen for each of the categories, and 27 acts competed in all in the finals held Saturday, May 3 at the Actor’s Playhouse. These contestants were selected from the hundreds that participated over the past four months in the total seven auditions held at venues around the county.

“Every year the talent gets better and better, and the dreams get bigger and bigger for this competition,” said Charles M. Auslander, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust, adding that “The Trust is dedicated to helping to encourage the dreams of the children of Miami-Dade County.

Throughout the finals night as he has at all the auditions, emcee Earl Maulding kept the audience caffeinated with his infectious good humor as he sang the high praises of the performers who were competing and those who auditioned over the past few months.
¨These kids are just beyond believing. For many of them this contest is the first time that they walk onto a stage for an audition, but to hear and see them – you’d never know it. Their talents – and courage – are just off the charts,” commented Maulding, who directs the Young Audiences Theatre at Actors’ Playhouse.

Individual first-place winners in each category received $200. Ysabella Reyes, a 10-year-old who studies dance at Dance Hall and who dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer and choreographer wooed judges with her Individual Dance performance. Abdias L. Armenteros, a 9th grade student at Miami Union Academy took top prize in Individual Musical Instrument with his spirited saxophone performance. In the relatively new category for Individual Original Composition, Javmar Perez-Contreras, a 14-year-old pianist who attends Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High School, won first prize in stiff competition.

Carolina Rivero, an 8th-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle, delivered a spirited rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep” to win Individual Vocal Pop/Rock/Rap. Judges awarded top prize for Individual Vocal Theatre/Jazz/Classical to Amanda Gonzalez-Piloto, a freshman vocalist at the New World School of the Arts, who delighted the audience with her version of “Taylor the Latte Boy.”

In Bands competition, One Love, comprised of five young musicians – Carina Ubinas, 15, Joshua Paulus-Rosenow, 15, Carlos Ubinas, 14, Michael Ubinas, 11, and Gabriela Ubinas, 9 – who’ve been performing together just a few months, took top prize. Each musician received $50. In Group Dance, Monica Delgado, an 8th grader at Coral Way K-8, and Anne Wright, an 8th grader at Westminister Christian School, won top honors and $100 each. Both are dancers with the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. Imani Coker, 16, and Naya Schere, 17, won top honors for Group Musical Instrument for their viola duet. Both are musicians in Coral Reef Senior High’s Orchestra Magnet. The two also received $100 each.

All category winners received master classes taught by local professionals and opportunities to attend a range of professional performances over the coming year; a pair of subscriptions to the Actors’ Playhouse 2014-15 Mainstage Season; local restaurant certificates; and professional headshots for their portfolios from Alberto Romeu Photography. The Individual Dance Winner also received a full scholarship to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.

Judges for the finals performance included: David Arisco, artistic director at Actors’ Playhouse; Lynn Martinez, WSVN CH7 News Anchor; Mary Carmen Catoya, Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet; Howard Cohen, Features Writer, The Miami Herald; Natalie Lewis-Schere, Co-Founder and Executive Director of PATH; and Joel Someillan, Award-winning musical producer of Nickelodeon’s Dora The Explorer and Go Diego Go! TV shows.

Early in the evening, Actors’ Playhouse executive producing director Barbara Stein welcomed local dignitaries and graciously thanked the many event sponsors. At the end of the night, the stage was filled with beaming contestants, purple Finalist medallions swinging at their necks. Stein’s welcome words still echoed in the confettied air.

“This has been the most amazing competition, one that inspires the dreams of so many and that we’re so glad to be a part of. Nobody’s leaving here tonight who’s not a first-class winner.

Bottle & Bottega Launches Art Hunt Miami Sends Miami Art Lovers on an Adventure in Search of Coveted Collection of Paintings

WHAT: Beginning next week on Monday, May 12th, and running through Friday, May 16th, Bottle & Bottega is sending local Miami residents scavenging for artistic treasures. Hidden throughout many of Greater Miami’s chic dining venues, this community event features four local artists’ paintings. The Art Hunt is open to the public. Starting Monday, clues about where each of the four pieces of art is hidden will be posted to Bottle & Bottega Miami’s Facebook page: facebook.com/BottleBottegaMiami. Winners simply take a photo of their art discovery and post it to the Bottle & Bottega Miami Facebook page. The first to find a painting also wins two free tickets to an upcoming Bottle & Bottega public party. The art pieces will be in plain sight within each venue, and the posted clues will be fairly simple.

WHY: This is an opportunity for local art enthusiasts to experience an adventure in art unlike any before. Miami is sharing in a love of art that can now be seen all over the city – not confined to a studio or single section of the city.

WHO: Miami’s Art Hunt is open to everyone. Bottle & Bottega Miami invites all who seek to add a bit of adventure into their search for attractive art to join the fun and uncover the paintings in unexpected venues.  Interviews will also be available with Maris Bish, owner of Bottle & Bottega – Miami.

In her studio, Fache will have some of her recent works in exhibition. Among them, “La Otra Mirada” an acrylic 3D painting, big paintings and a new installation.

“Opening the doors of my studio is like opening the door of color to my canvas’s mental space”, explains Fache.

Carla Fache is a chilean born, Miami-based visual artist who explores the frontiers of color, space, balance and matter, through her paintings and installations.

Her work unfolds the juncture of parallel scenarios that occur simultaneously to quotidian realities, providing dimensions of escape against the society status quo, leverage a reconnection through her canvas portals.

Color is essential in Fache’s work; she explores its infinite combinations and balance through careful blending primary and secondary colors, re- contextualizing the concept of coexistence, time and universality; a return to the essential.

Her work employs a variety of materials including traditional canvas, but also introducing unusual artifacts, expanding outside of the two-dimensional plane of the canvas and into the surrounding environment.

Her more recent exhibitions include: Florida Museum for Women Artists, The Invisible Dog Art Center-New York, Armory Art Center- Palm Beach, Cambridge Art Association-Boston and Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Some of the places where her work has been exhibited are: CIFO Cisneros Fontanels Arts Foundation, The Bass Museum of Art, Deering Estate at Cutler, Lowe Art Museum, MOCA and Coral Gables Museum to mention a few.

The Center for Literature and Theatre at Miami Dade College (MDC), in collaboration with Books & Books, will host New York Times bestselling author Michael Pollan.

For the past 25 years, Pollan has been writing about the places where nature and culture intersect. In Cooked, Pollan explores the previously uncharted territory of his own kitchen. He discovers the enduring power of the four classical elements – fire, water, air, and earth – to transform the stuff of nature into delicious things to eat and drink. Apprenticing himself to a succession of culinary masters, Pollan learns how to grill with fire, cook with liquid, bake bread, and ferment everything from cheese to beer. In the course of his journey, he discovers that the cook occupies a special place in the world, standing squarely between nature and culture. Both realms are transformed by cooking, and so, in the process, is the cook.

To receive a voucher (admission for one) to attend the event, purchase a copy of Cooked ($17 + tax) at Books & Books in Coral Gables, Miami Beach or Bal Harbour Shops. Attendees must show voucher and receipt to enter the event. For more information, contact Books & Books Coral Gables at 305-442-4408, or visit www.booksandbooks.com.

Fordistas is pleased to present a new exhibition, “Newspeak,” by Puerto Rican artist JUFE at the Yo <3 305 Gallery in Wynwood. JUFE’s latest exhibition, ‘Newspeak’, sets out to explore the short-form language that is quickly redefining how we communicate one pixel at a time: Emoji.

Drawing inspiration from the fictional short-form language created by the totalitarian state in George Orwell’s novel 1984, JUFE’s ‘Newspeak’ focuses on the benefits of today’s widespread use of Emoji as a short-form communication. To JUFE, Emoji’s have increased our ability to express universal emotions otherwise difficult to articulate through syllables.

“Emoji’s are more open. They help us break down existing language barriers,” explains JUFE, who chose to capture 20 of his most used Emoji’s on canvas.

During his solo exhibition, a series of limited edition signed prints will be made available for purchase ranging from $20-$100, the complete proceeds of which will benefit Salute to Education (www.stescholarships.org).

About Fordistas

The Fordistas program is a platform for emerging arts + culture powered by South Florida Ford. Following the success of the 2013 Art Basel exhibition Friends and Family, street artists Axel Void, 2ALAS, Jufe, Pastel, Jaz, 2501 and Alexis Diaz, will be provided with a year-long residency through which Fordistas will make available living quarters, materials, the opportunity to feature their work in solo Art Walk exhibitions as well as to develop their work within a talent space where the local meets the global in order to demonstrate South Florida’s influence upon their work and vice versa.

The Fordistas Residency Program will culminate during Art Basel 2014 for a final exhibition that will document the process of these artists brought together by the collective in order to showcase not only how their work is affected by the city and, in turn, how the city affects their creative expression but also how relationships inform and transform artistic production.

Nobody’s leaving here tonight who’s not a first-class winner.”

Artist Naomi Fisher whose photograph in the permanent collection is on view in “AMERICANA: Desiring Landscape” speaks briefly about the role of the natural world in her imagery and introduces “Black Narcissus” (1947), a film of her choice which reflects similar ideas in the exhibition.

“Black Narcissus” (1947)
United Kingdom. Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. 101 minutes
This academy award winning Powell and Pressburger classic is set in a community of nuns struggling to establish a convent high in the Himalayas. Their spiritual aims are hampered by the arrival of a beautiful native girl and a young general, while isolation, extreme weather, altitude, and culture clashes all conspire to drive the well-intentioned missionaries mad. Winner of two Oscars for Best Art Direction and Best Cinematography.

The “Desiring Landscape” gallery considers how representations of the landscape have been a means to explore human desires-from the sensual and sexual to the materialistic-to alternate interpretations of history. In correlation to the film, a brief, free public tour of “Desiring Landscape” and “Edouard Duval-Carrié: Imagined Landscapes” will also be offered at 6:30pm.

Free with museum admission. Seating begins at 6:30pm. Introduction and film screening begins at 7pm.

EXPANSE: An Exploration of the Uncharted Urban opens at the Williams McCall Gallery South of Fifth featuring emerging artists Bisco Smith, David McCauley, and Claire Kowalewski. Kicking off with an artist reception that is open to the public on Saturday, May 10th at 6 pm, the exhibit will run until May 31st.

Bisco Smith’s work is often described as “refined grime” — a blend of fine art, graphic design, and graffiti deconstruction. David McCauley is a mixed media artist based in Miami, FL. As a paralyzed artist, art has played an important role for David in overcoming tremendous personal challenges. David’s artwork is a wide-ranging collection of mosaics, design, symmetry, typography, and photography. Claire Kowalewski is a high-distinction Caldwell Scholar at the prestigious Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA). Kowalewski’s current work plays with traditional and city lifestyles that capture the viewers eye with vivid color and unfamiliar locale.

MCCJ is thrilled to announce that this year’s recipient of the Hank Meyer National Headliner Award is Emmy Award winning journalist, Michel Martin. Ms. Martin joined NPR after a long career at ABC News. Her national radio show on NPR, Tell Me More, is powered by her own interest and focuses heavily on topics of race, religion and spirituality.

Martin has had an illustrious journalistic career. After working the local news beat for The Washington Post and becoming White House correspondent for The Wall Street Journal, Martin joined ABC News in 1992. At ABC, she reported for Nightline and was awarded an Emmy for a report that aired on Day One. In 2001, she hosted the PBS show Life 360. Since April 2007, she has hosted the one-hour daily NPR news and talk show, which covers everything from immigration to parenting in a multicultural family. “I am fascinated by people who live lives different from my own, and at the same time, I feel connected to all of these lives being a journalist, a woman of color, a wife and mother,” said Martin.

NPR fans are welcome to register for this breakfast, where they’ll have an opportunity to chat with the journalist. The Hank Meyers Award has traditionally gone to journalists who mirror MCCJ’s mission of creating an inclusive community, including Walter Cronkite, Dan Rather, Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Leonard Pitts Jr., and last year, ABC’s John Quiñones.

Reservations for the Headliner Breakfast with Michel Martin, call 305-755-6096, or go to www.miamiccj.org. $30.00 pp includes breakfast and parking.

MCCJ was founded in Miami in 1935 as the Miami Coalition of Christians & Jews. It creates a safe haven for dialog, trains inclusive leaders and promotes understanding for all faiths, races and cultures through education, advocacy and conflict resolution. It hosts the oldest interfaith clergy dialog in the United States and presents prejudice reducing programs in local high schools, among other activities. If a single symbol could summarize the iconic work of Leonel Matheu (Havana, 1967), this would be that enigmatic head –a sort of dome- that appears as a constant throughout his work. Self-portrait and collective portrayal of a nation marked by diaspora and dystopia, this symbol embodies the symptoms and stigma of contemporary global society.
With a masterful use of the synthetic graphic design language, Matheu builds up a personal and yet universal iconography that interweaves in intimate fables of our daily existence. Spirituality, technology, passion, solitude, dreams, chimeras and deceptions are at the core of this thoughtful body of works.
“Crossroads of the Dystopia” is the first major museum survey exhibition of this midcareer versatile artist whose work ranges from drawing with colored pencils, ink on paper, oil on canvases, video and multimedia installations, to public installations and qualification of architectural spaces. Presented by Dotfiftyone Gallery and curated by Janet Batet, the exhibition resumes moreover twenty years of work and provides a comprehensive overview of Matheu’s most distinctive imagery.
Leonel Matheu, who presently resides between Miami and Los Angeles, has been one of the figures that have marked the local arts Miami in the last twenty years. He graduated at the Institute of Graphic Design of Havana in 1987. In 1992 he settled in Miami, Florida. His artwork is part of public collections in various art museums, between them are the MOCA-Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami Beach, The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University in Miami, The Lowe Art Museum in Coral Gables, The Bass Museum of Art in Miami Beach, The Young at Art Museum in Davie, Georgia Museum of Art at University of Georgia in Athens, The Mobile Museum of Art in Alabama, The University Art Museum in Radford University, Virginia among others.

In her 2013 article, “Trayvon Martin, Race, and Anthropology,” Dr. Leith Mullings (President, American Anthropological Association) spoke out, stepped up to, and challenged, conventional wisdom regarding “diversity.”

“Diversity,” wrote Mullings, “has become a threadbare term used… to refer to almost any type of variation… [while] admirable…[diversity, expanded, fails] to address the historical injustices of racial exclusion…[and] obscures the systemic character of racism in the United States.

All forms of discrimination are lamentable, but they are not equal, nor even necessarily comparable, [they]…require different interventions.”

By 2015, our nation will have commemorated several of those key, momentous, interventions targeting extant anti-Black/pro-White racist world-views, laws, systems, beliefs, attitudes, customs, and practices.

To date, Civil Rights laws throughout south Florida, and across our nation, have failed:
(i) To End White Privilege,
(II) To Abolish, what the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called, the “Disease of Racism,” and
(III) To Close the resulting disparities lived by diverse Black men, women, and children through Euro-centric Educational, Medical, Military and Prison Industrial Complexes.

Even With President Barak Hussein Obama In The White House!

Accordingly, for Dr. Mary Francis Berry (Longtime Former Chairwoman, the United States Commission on Civil Rights), and despite the frenzy over Diversity, Inclusion, and Human Rights, “the crux of the problem today is there is no [Black] civil rights movement…[ because] President Obama is the prize in the minds of most people… at the end of the struggle… [He] was our payoff…” She added, “There will be a [re-vitalized] civil rights movement when Obama is no longer president [and]problems that Black people have remain!”

Unfinished Black Civil Rights Agenda Items
(10 of 365 identified)
(1) Psychological Residuals & Legacy of White European Trans-Atlantic Slavery and Trade of Black African Slaves.
(2) Need for a Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
(3) Financial Reparations to ALL Documented Descendants of Black African Slaves.
(4) Elimination of Mass Incarceration of Black Boys and Men.
(5) Re-Construction of the Black Nuclear and Extended Families.
(6) Elimination of Anti-Black Stereotypes.
(7) Ongoing Apologies to descendants of Black African Slaves.
(8) Elimination of ongoing attacks on Black Pan- African Organizational Unity.
(9) Re-Inclusion of Black Males positively in the public and private imageries of the United States at home and abroad.
(10) Increase in U.S. Foreign Aid / Assistance to ALL nations in Black Sub- Saharan Africa.

Gary G. Logan’s “Origin,” a collection of 24 works, is currently on display at Broward College’s South Campus gallery through June 13, 2014.
In the spirit of Neo-Romanticism, Logan’s vivid colors and rich textures explore the mystery of the planet and the Taoist elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. Logan’s reinterpretations of nature are metaphors for the soul’s “inner landscapes” and emotions. Please visit www.bsoca.org for more information.

Renowned contemporary dancer Cédric Andrieux trained in France then spent years with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company before returning to France to join the Lyon Opera Ballet. He will perform identical concerts on April 25 and 26 at the Colony Theatre. Cédric Andrieux is a solo set on Andrieux by leading French choreographer Jérôme Bel. This work, created in 2009 for the Paris Opera Ballet, has since been performed throughout the world. In this solo, danced and narrated by Andrieux, the French-born dancer traces the arc of his development in and out of the studio and on and off the stage. His story begins with his early training as a contemporary dancer, then moves on to his time at a prestigious conservatory in Paris and continues through his professional life as a performer with the company and Lyon Opera Ballet. His droll narrative is punctuated with danced illustrations that include excerpts from milestone dance works, by Cunningham and Trisha Brown, as well as a humorous look at Cunningham’s rigorous daily class. Clever, humorous and touching, Cédric Andrieux offers incredible insight into the world of a performer who has lived the history of contemporary dance.

Inside FACES
curatorial statement
Rochi Llaneza

Most street artists early in the graffiti movement wouldn’t show their faces,
and their visual aesthetics was mainly a font-‐based style. Much has
changed since then, for example, Gregos, a street artist from Paris uses his own face on walls across the world. In general, street art has become a rising creative industry with international influences.
But far from the common objectification we find in some of today’s street
art, this particular group of artists who are mainly street artists, have a
strong connection to these FACES.
The artists in this exhibition cite from iconic historical images as 2alas, to
controversial socio-‐political references used by Claudia Calle, James Brutus
and Evoca1; to the anthropomorphic imagery created by Julie Friel’s
imagination. Dan Walker uses found objects and re-‐uses them as palette to
create portraits of random ‘found’ people. Stefan Von Fouts recycles not only objects but also ideas in order to seduce the viewer to examine commercial fads and appetites. “The gorilla in the room” by Ruben Ubiera is a metaphor for what’s happening with street art today: “post graffism…the art no one wanted to call art, but its now staring right at you”.
With the fast paced world we live in, we sense that life is like a rat-‐race existence where everything is temporary and transient, example, street art on exterior walls. By bringing the message these artists render inside the
walls of an art space, we try to hold the missive a bit longer.
