Local non-profit Saludarte Foundation, whose mission is to improve the health of youth and other socio-economic disadvantaged groups through the arts, announces 8-week run of Seeking the Essence, a unique artistic exhibition featuring 18 works of award-winning author and illustrator Menena Cottin. Various community events are programmed for the fully bilingual, family-friendly and interactive exhibition including author presentations, family days and a public opening reception on April 26, 2018, 6-9p.m.

Menena Cottin has already touched the lives of many. Her books celebrate curiosity as the author explores themes like: experiencing colors as a blind child, living in a world turned upside down and how reality is really a matter of perspective. Simple in their aesthetics, but profound and transformational in their messages, Menena Cottin’s books have been recognized by the New York Times, The Bogota Post, The Indian Express and the School Library Journal’s Best Books for Children, and some have been translated into as many as 20 languages. A sensation in her native Venezuela, and throughout Latin America, now she looks to crossover into the U.S. market alongside curator Pedro Quintero with an experiential exhibition that promises to spark curiosity and empathy, while awakening the inner child in us all.

The concert features new work by University of Miami’s Frost Electroacoustic Music Ensemble with Greg Evans and Alec Druth; and Violist Diana Wade with Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie performing seminal compositions from some of the greats of avant garde music.
John Chowning is the musician and researcher whose discovery led to the first electronic music synthesizers, which have since produced sounds that revolutionized all genres of music. His FM algorithm gives today’s electronic synthesizers and organs the ability to simulate wide ranging musical textures and sounds, including the human voice.
Los Angeles, California based Violist Diana Wade and Mezzo-soprano Jennifer Beattie will perform contemporary works by groundbreaking new music composers Beglarian, Norman, Saariaho, Sciarrino, Schankler, as well as Wade’s original compositions. Diana has been praised for playing with “both athletic and operatic ferocity with a physical force that shook her and a sonic one that practically shook the walls”.
This concert is presented in collaboration with Foundation for Emerging Technologies and Arts as part of their FETA FM FEST celebrating Stanford Professor John Chowning and the 50th anniversary of his groundbreaking invention Frequency Modulation synthesis.

Grillin N’ Chillin kicks off BBQ season with a full-blown countryside event that’s free for the entire family. Whether you’re craving backyard barbecue spare ribs, a southern brisket or a mouthwatering pulled pork sandwich, Grillin N Chillin has compiled 40-50 BBQ vendors from around town offering everything from Memphis style barbecue to Brazilian churrasco. Celebrating its 4th anniversary, this year’s festival will take place at the Wynwood Marketplace, more commonly known for hosting Wynwood Art Walk’s block party.

At Grillin’s Kitchen Lab, South Florida’s premier pit masters will take center stage to smoke the competition out at this year’s BBQ Cook Off. In between cooking demos, their saucy host will perform a ROAST comedy show. In addition, they will pit two local backyard chefs and their best burger recipe at Miami’s Best Backyard Burger competition. Those interested in participating should register their recipe at WynwoodBBQFest.com. For the first time ever, Grillin N’ Chillin will have a Veggie Corner, where Miami’s top, vegetarian and vegan eateries will showcase their menu. While kids enjoy the Family Fun Zone, adults can relax at The Pit, a pop-up BBQ-infused sports bar that will have bars and live music, or they can “Get Lost in the Sauce” at the huge sauce bar. Be sure to pick up some SWARM Bar Bucks online to save money on mixed drinks (($25 for $45 value at the bar). Also, bring your furry pups, because the Hot Dogz playground will have plenty of treats for them to enjoy. In addition, the Animal Adoption Truck will be on site for those looking to take home a pet. To round off a day of good BBQ, Grillin N’ Chillin has compiled a number of popular dessert vendors who will be ready to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Perhaps the coolest feature at this year’s Grillin N’ Chillin is both the humanitarian and ecological stand that it’s going to take. SWARM, the creators of this festival, will set up a Miami Rescue Mission tent, so that people can sponsor a meal for a hungry person. In addition, it will be “going green” by partnering with Debris Free Oceans to become a zero-waste event. “To date, no other event in South Florida has taken this into consideration, so we’re excited to have proper sorting, composting and recycling stations in addition to other green efforts,” says Tony Albelo, CEO at SWARM.

Sprung! is back for 2018 at a new Wynwood location, offering the unlimited craft beer samples everyone craves, and a brand-new theme. Beer and sports have always been a winning combination, so SWARM has brought the two together to make this annual Sprung! Spring Beer Festival, the most fun, free-spirited, beer-tasting event in town. Over 15 million ounces of beer have been served in the five years of Sprung, and for 2018, people can expect to see more beer games, more entertainment, more cooking demos, more food, and naturally, more beer!

Beer enthusiasts from all over go for the unlimited beer tasting of over 300 craft beers; others go for some crazy fun. Whatever their reason, one hundred breweries have already signed up, and many are bringing their extra special, limited release beers. Now taking place at the Wynwood Marketplace, beer lovers can play against their friends in a variety of games such as Flip Cup, 2-person Beer Pong, 1-on-1 Beer-in-Hand H.O.R.S.E., Cornhole and other friendly games. Dare to compete for awesome beer prizes in the pong and flip cup tournaments run by CLUBWAKA, Miami’s premier adult-rec leagues, and hosted by Miami’s Instagram craft beer diva, @Brew.Babe

Other Sprung! favorites include The Kitchen Lab, which will offer cooking demos and samplings from some of the best South Florida’s chefs showing us how to make dishes that either use craft beer as an ingredient or pair well with beer. The Thrifter Marketplace will feature artisan-crafted goods and artwork, and the mainstage will showcase live music and DJ’s. In addition, Miami’s food trucks will be present to offer their best bites! While everyone is busy sampling beer, eating and having fun, Sprung! creators will be working towards becoming a zero waste event with the help of Debris Free Oceans. Beginning with this festival, SWARM will take several measures into account, including managing the sorting, composting and recycling stations.

During the past 5 years, we’ve encouraged our attendees to ignite the fire within, to approach things differently, and together we have created unique experiences that have resonated in our community. For our 5-year anniversary, we dug deeper to find an inspiration to push things further than ever before. We’ve come together to create something entirely new, an immersive lighting experience we’ve called REFRACT. All matter is made of light and every one of us has a light inside that wants to shine through. With that in mind we are putting together a state of the art lighting installation designed for thematic moments of crowd interaction, where you are encouraged to manipulate light in your own creative ways. But, we didn’t stop there… we are ensuring a night of musical bliss with a very special lineup will have you moving to an amazing soundtrack while for effecting the light together. Let’s celebrate the past 5 years with a taste of what is yet to come in the future.

One-of-a-Kind International Apparel and Textile Sourcing Show Expands to Miami & Focuses on Gateway to Latin America 5/21/18, 5/22/18, 5/23/18

One-of-a-Kind International Apparel and Textile Sourcing Show Expands to Miami & Focuses on Gateway to Latin America
Monday, 05/21/2018 – 05/23/2018 10:00 am – 07:00 pm
Mana Wynwood Convention Center
318 Nw 23Rd St,
Miami, Florida 33127
Website
Cost:

Small businesses, retailers, manufacturers and designers across the United States and Latin America will get a boost for the summer when the Apparel Textile Sourcing Miami (ATS-M) trade show- a one-of-a-kind event- expands to Miami in May.
A comprehensive trade show and conference, ATS-M will take place May 21-23, 2018, at the Mana Wynwood Convention Center in Miami. The event will bring to Florida hundreds of international apparel and textile manufacturers from China, India, Bangladesh, the U.S., Turkey, Pakistan, Mexico and many other countries and territories from across Central and South America and all around the globe.
Moishe Mana, Miami-based billionaire developer and CEO of Mana Group said, “We are committed to making Miami the nexus for commerce between Asia, North America, and Latin America.” He continued, “We’re excited to have ATS Miami join this initiative as the fashion and apparel industry is one of our core verticals.”
The ATS brand has established itself internationally with Apparel Textile Sourcing Canada, held every August in Toronto. In 2017 the event grew by more than 50% in attendees and international exhibits. The same formula of success is the basis for ATS-Miami.
Next to the hundreds of manufacturers’ booths and exhibits, ATS-Miami will deliver 3-days-worth of an unprecedented platform of global connections in manufacturing and fashion.
Attendees will gain new insights and information to best navigate and profit in the international sourcing process
Featured focus on Manufacturer Transparency, Speed & Responsiveness + benefits of Near Sourcing Americas
“The expansion of the ATS Brand to Miami is a direct response to the market demand and fills a significant gap for the US-&-Latin American markets,” said Jason Prescott, CEO of JP Communications, organizer of the event and parent-company to toptenwholesale.com and manufacturer.com, the most expansive network of business-to-business sourcing platforms in the U.S. Millions of international members use these brands to locate wholesalers and manufacturers.
“ATS-Miami provides a unique opportunity for apparel and textile importers and retailers to intersect and access the most current importing information from the top industry insiders. Imagine the time and money saved for the local and Latin importers. The producers are coming from Asia to Miami,” Prescott said, emphasizing that China alone exports $42 billion in apparel a year to the US and $11 billion a year to Latin America.
Clay Hickson, VP Strategy & Business Development with Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production (WRAP) said, “The team at Apparel Textile Sourcing puts on great events and we’re excited to partner with them again in Miami. We have partnered with ATS since the launch of the first event in Toronto, which has quickly grown to be an important apparel and fashion industry event in North America.”
ATS-M will feature three days-worth of seminars, panels and runway shows featuring acclaimed industry and government experts, covering topics from trade agreements to best practices with an eye on the changing Latin American market, as well as tips on how to choose overseas producers, plus new approaches on succeeding in the U.S. market.
“The ATS-Miami design pods and fashion show will include International apparel producers, Latin American artisans, Made-in-Americas manufacturers and active design students,” said Apparel Textile Sourcing Director John Banker. “The runway at ATSM will knock the socks off of summer fashion!”
ATS-M will also feature:
A “Made in USA” Pavilion, showcasing US-based manufacturers who source apparel and textiles from abroad for their finished goods, as well as US designers who have their designs produced into finished products overseas.
The Americas Pavilion featuring products from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, and more.
A Summer 2018 Apparel and Textile Trends display, providing a first-hand look at the colors, patterns and textures that will be all the rage for the summer nights in Miami.
Apparel Textile Sourcing tradeshows are supported in coordination with a range of International and Domestic partnerships, including the Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textile and Apparel (CCCT), toptenwholesale.com, manufacturer.com, the Bangladesh High Commission, The Export Promotion Bureau of Bangladesh, Trade Development Authority Pakistan, India Exhibitions, Pro Mexico, Pro Colombia, ProNicaragua, Proesa, VESTEX, Worldwide Responsible Accredited Production, Canadian Merchandiser, Apparel Export Promotion Council, and The Sourcing Journal.

MOAD MDC Presents Samora Pinderhughes: The Transformations Suite 2/2/18

MOAD MDC Presents Samora Pinderhughes: The Transformations Suite
Friday, 02/02/2018 – 08:00 pm –
Miami Light Project at the Light Box
404 NW 26th St,
Miami, Florida 33127

Cost: This is a ticketed event. $15 general admission; $5 students with ID; free to MDC students.

The Transformations Suite paints a musical picture of the current state of social inequality and injustice in the United States and beyond. Samora Pinderhughes has spent the past five years writing, recording, and producing this work, which combines music, theater, and poetry to examine the radical history of resistance within communities of the African diaspora. Within the composition’s framework, the project connects contemporary issues, such as the prison-industrial complex and the Black Lives Matter movement, with the history of revolutionary movements of color. Centered in the belief that there is a soundtrack to every revolution, The Transformations Suite intends to foster dialogue on social-justice issues throughout the world, show how art can promote social change, contribute to the powerful growing movement on behalf of black lives around the country, and empower all people –especially youth– to make their voices heard. Samora Abayomi Pinderhughes is a world-renowned pianist and composer who has performed at the White House, the Blue Note, MoMA, the Sundance Film Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and Carnegie Hall, and has toured internationally with Branford Marsalis, Christian Scott, Jose James, Harvey Mason, Emily King, and other artists. His projects include I’m Still Here: Letters on Trauma & Healing ,for the Institute for Arts and Civic Dialogue; The James Baldwin Essays: Examining the American Dream Narrative, commissioned by Harlem Stage; The Migration of Protest: Meditations on Jacob Lawrence, for the Museum of Modern Art; and Billy Strayhorn: The Music of the Sutherland Period, for the Kennedy Center and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. Pinderhughes is also a member of Blackout for Human Rights, and was musical director for their 2016 #MLKNow and #JusticeForFlint events. The Transformations Suite has been performed throughout South America and the U.S. at venues including the American Museum of Natural History, the Harlem Arts Festival, Juilliard, UC Irvine, NYU, Joe’s Pub, the Jazz Gallery, MoMA, and Columbia University.

404 N.W. 26th Street,
Miami, Florida 33127

Cost: $15 general admission; $5 students with ID; free to MDC students

Karen Finley’s rave-reviewed solo performance Unicorn Gratitude Mystery explores psychological portrayals of the power that drives American election politics. Set in the recent US political presidential landscape, it takes on citizenship, gender disparity, and abuse of power. The individual cost of public relationships at the expense of privacy becomes divisive with searing psychosexual dynamics of wit and seething revelation. The performance includes magical beings, aggressive thankfulness, and collective intimacy through Shakespearean family nation dramatic traumatics. Playing a unicorn and morphing into a Hillary-like, Trump-like being while enveloping into the blueness of the blue dress of Monica Lewinsky, Finley embodies an experimental nonlinear poetic text that creates a jolt of intuition, analysis, and unnatural disaster of the human kind. Karen Finley is a pioneering interdisciplinary artist who has performed and exhibited internationally. Her recent work includes Mandala: Reimagined Columbus Circle, an interactive walk that examines the symbols and history of Columbus Circle; Artist Anonymous, a self-help meeting for those addicted to art; Written in Sand, a performance of her writings on AIDS; Open Heart, a Holocaust memorial at Camp Gusen, Austria; and Sext Me If You Can, where Finley creates commissioned portraits inspired by “sexts” received from the public. She is the author of eight books, including her latest, the twenty-fifth anniversary edition of Shock Treatment (City Lights). Grabbing Pussy (OR Books) is forthcoming in 2018. A recipient of many awards and grants, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, she is a professor of Art and Public Policy at New York University.

In 2017, the band released their latest album “Honey Bun” in collaboration with Grammy winner Adrian Quesada as co-producer. Hidden secrets revealed by Barry Fellman’s Mangrove Coast photos will be on view in an invited installation at this year’s Art Miami Fair. Open free to the public during Miami Art Week, new photos from this multi-year project will be presented in a specially designed shipping container at the entrance of Art Miami. The installation, part of the Deep See project, will invite viewers into an immersive water focused experience.

Felllman’s images seduce you, inviting you closer to understand them.  As you approach they clarify into familiar forms of sea grasses and shells, while basic notions of scale and distance remain a mystery until your nose is nearly pressed against the photograph. You then realize you are looking at a wondrous and fantastic view of the shoreline, full of secrets and mysteries.

The mangrove ecosystem provides shoreline protection and serves as the economic base for the recreational and commercial activities that have made South Florida prosper.  It recycles nutrients and is the breeding and feeding grounds for hundreds of species, nurturing a wide range of marine life, amphibians, birds, and mammals.

Mangrove Coast at Art Miami is one of four invited components of the Deep See project highlighting awareness about climate change, sea level rise and marine conservation.

It has increased the visibility in the United States of crucial figures like Julio Le Parc, José Gurvich, Jorge Eielson, Lydia Okumura, Antonio Manuel, Waltercio Caldas, Ivan Contreras Brunet, Carlos Cruz Diez, and Spanish artist Elena Asins. During its 2016’s edition and thanks to its impressive programming, PINTA Miami reached record attendance of over 30,000 visitors. Its curatorial committee expanded its project to include galleries from around the globe, thereby destroying barriers and permeating through all corners of the globe. Soho Studios
2136 NW 1st Ave,
Miami, Florida 33127

Cost: Free

The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ present No Commission: Miami 2017, a three-day, art and music experience taking place December 7 – 9, 2017, at Soho Studios in Wynwood. No Commission is a roving experiential platform organized by The Dean Collection and BACARDÍ to forge a direct link between art and art patronage. No Commission is designed specifically to support artists in different territories around the world.

No Commission Miami 2017 casts a thematic light on “Island Might”, which suggests the power and possibility, tradition and future of a place and its people. The “ways of an island”— its functioning components and life essentials are guiding principles. We examine family, land & sea, ritual, revolution and color as elemental forces that can illuminate the roadmap for a more generous, stable fate.

The injection of immersive music performances from collaborator BACARDÍ shakes up the traditional art fair, creating a unique culture experience for visitors. Past performers have included Alicia Keys, Major Lazer, A$AP Rocky, Cardi B, DMX, Pusha T and more. There are also some fantastic artist profiles of individuals who have gone on to find tremendous success following their No Commission exhibitions.

No Commission Miami is the sixth in a series of artist support collaborations. Past editions were held in Miami, New York, London, Shanghai and Berlin where artworks were sold and artists retained 100% of sales proceeds. The No Commission platform is realized through a partnership between BACARDÍ, Swizz Beatz, and The Dean Collection in their continued support of cultural visionaries around the world.

No Commission: Miami is open via invitation only on Thursday, December 7. On Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9 No Commission: Miami will be open to the public from 12pm to 5pm, and from 7pm to 12am with valid registration.

Join us Wednesdays for live jazz under the stars featuring Miami local music luminaries living in our midst. These shows are each Wednesday from 8 pm – 11 pm for free at The Yard and are curated by Chad Bernstein of Guitars Over Guns.

On Wednesday, November 29th, pianist Tal Cohen pays us a very special visit at The Yard. Cohen’s unique piano style owes its roots to the Jewish folk songs and classical music he played in his formative years growing up in Israel. He later moved to Australia, where he received a music scholarship from Churchlands Senior High School. He continued his music studies at the prestigious Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, where he completed a bachelor’s degree and masters in jazz performance. He began performing nationally, including Sydney’s 505 and Melbourne’s Bennett’s Lane and Uptown jazz clubs. In the same year, he also performed with New York saxophonist, George Garzone. In 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet”. That same year, Cohen released his first album as a leader “Yellow Sticker”. He’s currently studying at the University of Miami, where he’s had the opportunity to play with drummer Jeff “Tain” Watts, and West Coast-based trumpeter John Daversa. We can proudly call him a local.

In July 2011, Tal performed at the Melbourne Jazz Festival in the “Jamie Oehlers Quartet” which featured Australia’s Jamie Oehlers on saxophone as well as highly acclaimed New York drummer Ari Hoenig, and Sam Anning on bass. The group then went on to record the album “Smoke and Mirrors” after which the group toured around Australia in August 2012. Tal has also had the honor of playing with iconic modern jazz bassist, Bob Hurst in Melbourne and Perth shows in June 2012, alongside Jamie Oehlers and drummer, Jacob Evans.

Tables are pulled up near the stage for that jazzy club feel under the stars. Savor drinks from The Bar at The Yard and Charcoal Garden Bar + Grill and bites from our resident food concepts. Admission is free. #jazzattheyard

Fantich & Young: Apex Predator | Darwinian Voodoo 12/6/17, 12/7/17, 12/8/17, 12/9/17, 12/10/17

Fantich & Young: Apex Predator | Darwinian Voodoo
Wednesday, 12/06/2017 – 12/10/2017 12:00 pm – 07:00 pm
Wynwood
221 NW 23rd Street,
Miami, Florida 33127

Taking the “killer shoe” to the next level, Fantich & Young merge fine art, fashion and design to present luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items to represent Darwin’s notion of “survival of the fittest” and call into question controversial social issues dealing with the free market economy.

Barrett Barrera Projects, a St. Louis-based multidisciplinary consulting company specializing in arts, culture and contemporary fashion, is returning to Miami Art Week to present FANTICH & YOUNG: APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO as one of the art installations the company will unveil in Wynwood during Art Basel from December 7 to 10, 2017.

Simulating a luxury lifestyle boutique, APEX PREDATOR | DARWINIAN VOODOO is a conceptual pop-up exhibition employing multimedia sculpture, photographic prints and a promotional advertising campaign to present a primeval yet contemporary collection that merges the creative disciplines of fine art, design and fashion.

Mariana Fantich, born and raised in the Ukraine, is an artist and digital media specialist and Dominic Young is an English musician and artist. Since 2008 they have collaborated under the name Fantich & Young and are currently based in London’s East End. The duo juxtaposes and manipulates symbolic ready-made objects – including Saville Row suits and Jimmy Choo shoes – in order to parallel both natural and social evolution, calling into question the theory of natural selection with nods to ceremonial ritual and the supernatural – a concept they term Darwinian Voodoo. Their Apex Predator project, an outgrowth of Darwinian Voodoo, was inspired by the 2008 financial crisis. Luxury consumer goods augmented with ritualistic items such as teeth, bones, and hair represent the banking community and its escape from criminal prosecution. The financiers thus become the titular Apex Predator – topping the food chain, facing no real threat and possessing perhaps a touch of the supernatural.

Designed for ‘‘the discerning client with the taste for power and exclusivity,” the Apex Predator collection includes shoes, masks, two-piece ensembles, perfume and other meticulously embellished accessories. All items in this luxury retail exhibition will be sold as limited-edition art sculpture (not meant to be worn as fashion items) with prices ranging from $2,000 for the “killer shoes” – a pair of black stilettos featuring soles made of teeth – to $45,000 for “Female and Male Superhumans.”

If the free-market economy is indeed a forum where only the strongest survive, and our urban habitats are a brutal jungle, Fantich & Young’s Darwinian Voodoo seems to perfectly address the needs of an exclusive clientele who reside at the very top of our society’s food chain.
