On Thursday, November 15th Shore Club’s brand-new Mexican restaurant, Diez y Seis, will partner with popular Miami food blogger, @Miami_FoodPorn, and The OG Supper Club, Miami’s newest multi-generational, experiential dinner club, to present a @Miami_FoodPorn x OG Supper Club Fiesta! The National Hotel, the cinematic Art Deco treasure in the heart of South Beach, is partnering with Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally recognized nonprofit and partner of local broadcast station CBS4, to host Chefs 4 Neighbors, a culinary benefit event to raise funds to support individuals and families with immediate needs. Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund and victims of Hurricane Michael through a partnership with Farm Share. The Family Fund program offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

The Confidante Miami Beach, alongside Bird & Bone’s Chef Richard Hales and Tequila Revolución’s National Sales Director, Adrian Sosa, invite guests to a special tequila pairing dinner on Friday, October 26. The inaugural evening kicks off The Confidante’s new monthly dinner series aptly named The Confidante Dinner Club, which will feature a specially curated collaboration with a new spirit brand each month. Embracing the warm, welcoming and vibrant glamour of The Confidante, the evening will take place in The 1930s House, a private, outdoor Spanish-style bungalow originally built as a one-bedroom family home. Once located across the street from the Collins Avenue hotel, the structure was picked up by crane and relocated to The Backyard at The Confidante, where it currently resides. The evening features passed hors d’oeuvres and retro-themed welcome cocktails created in partnership with The Confidante’s food and beverage team and Tequila Revolución’s master mixologists. Renowned local chef Richard Hales, Chef/Partner of American-inspired on-site eatery Bird & Bone, will showcase a specially curated three-course menu expertly paired with three different expressions of Tequila Revolución.

Chef Hales and Sosa will be present to guide guests through the culinary journey, explaining how the flavors of each dish pair with the tequila. As a 15+ year veteran in the wine and spirits industry, Sosa has represented various prestigious tequila brands such as Patron, Sauza, Cazadores and Partida. After the food and spirits journey, guests will end the evening with a social hour complete with a cigar rolling station and open bar.

Jungle Island debuts its thrilling “Hallow Fest,” a themed weekend-long adventure that is open to guests of all ages at the newly designed eco-adventure park. Filled with interactive games, haunted trails, pumpkin painting, face painting, costume contests, animal interactions and much more! It’s Miami’s best location to take a festive journey through a decorative jungle and celebrate the season with the children.
Every weekend, beginning on October 13th through October 28th, Jungle Island will bring a new adventure of engaging events and activities, scenic photo opportunities at a real pumpkin patch, a winding hay barrel maze, scarecrows, and a trick-or-treating candy trail all throughout the park. With every child admission, children will receive a free small pumpkin to decorate at the park’s pumpkin painting station, with medium and large pumpkins available for additional purchase.
Each costume contest will be held from October 26 – October 28, with a variety of exciting prizes including VIP Adventure Tours, Annual Passes, and General Admission Tickets.
Children aren’t the only one’s getting all the fun, as parents and friends will also be able to enjoy all the festivities with special Halloween-themed carnival food, potion drinks, smoking cocktails, pumpkin spice lattes, and a festive beer garden for grown-ups.
General admission: $52.95, $39.95 (3-10 years). Children two and under are free.
In celebration of National Adventure Day, guests can also take advantage of their entry to the park with Jungle Island’s “Buy A Day, Play For A Year” special through October 21st, turning a one-day admission into an annual pass. This Halloween, The National Hotel is transforming the Aqua Club and Lounge into “King’s Landing” inspired by the popular HBO series, “Game of Thrones.” Everyone gets to be king or queen of the Seven Kingdoms for the night and party hard like “winter is coming” while sipping on themed drinks and dancing to groovy sounds from a live DJ. Ballet Flamenco La Rosa presents the World Premiere of El Conde Dracula. Created and choreographed by Artistic Director of BFLR, Ilisa Rosal, this work was inspired by Bram Stokers’ Dracula. This potent and vivid Flamenco Ballet connects with this timeless material to create a new incarnation of what is probably the most definitive work in this genre.
In the play, a young lawyer (Jonathan Harker) is assigned to a gloomy village in the midst of Eastern Europe. Harker is captured and imprisoned by the undead vampire Dracula, who travels to London, inspired by a photograph of Harker’s betrothed, Mina Murray. In Britain, Dracula begins a reign of seduction and terror, draining the life from Mina’s closest friend, Lucy Westenra. Abraham Van Helsing, the archenemy of Count Dracula, adds a special twist to the story, as Lucy’s friends gather together to try to drive Dracula away.

This production features 12 dancers and musicians, including six top artists directly from Spain led by Special Guest Artist Pepe Flores, one of the most important artists of his time, in the role of Count Dracula. He will be joined by dancers Agustin Barajas, Juan Mateo and Fran Bas along with singer Luis Moreno and guitarist Miguel Aguilera, who will create and perform original vocals and lyrics for the work.

The story and characters help audiences relate to what is being expressed by the music and dance, which becomes a universal language. It creates an exciting and inspiring theater experience.

One Night in Miami… is a play that traces Cassius Clay’s journey to becoming the legendary Muhammad Ali, squarely centering Miami’s critical role as pivotal to the American Civil Rights Movement.

MIAMI, FL (October, 2018) – What happens when you mix the mystical philosophy and music of India with the forward-leaning jazz of the legendary Alice Coltrane? That intoxicating, otherworldly yet deeply earthy music was nearly lost to history until David Byrne (of Talking Heads and more fame) and his Luaka Bop record label recently brought it back to the public with the release of a new album compilation. On Friday, October 12, South Florida audiences have the chance to hear that music live, from the Sai Anatam Singers, who originally performed Coltrane’s devotional compositions, including Alice’s musician daughter Michelle Coltrane, at the North Beach Bandshell, presented by The Rhythm Foundation.

Alice Coltrane was an acclaimed jazz musician, composer, and the wife of John Coltrane, the most venerated and influential saxophonist in the history of jazz. In 1967, John died, leaving Alice a widow with four small children. Bereft of her soul mate Alice turned to Indian spirituality, eventually opening the Shanti Anantam Ashram. Music was the foundation of Alice’s spiritual practice and during this time she released recordings inspired by jazz and the gospel music of the Detroit churches she grew up in, mixed with the Indian music of her religious practice.

This unique concert event, led by Surya Botofasina, an actor and musician who grew up in Coltrane’s ashram, continues The Rhythm Foundation’s eclectic 2018 fall season. “We are all so excited to not only pay tribute to the iconic Alice Coltrane with this event, but also to bring this powerful spiritual and musically moving concert to our North Beach Bandshell” says Par Neiburger, Artistic Director of The Rhythm Foundation.

The National Hotel, the cinematic Art Deco treasure in the heart of South Beach, is partnering with Neighbors 4 Neighbors, a nationally recognized nonprofit and partner of local broadcast station CBS4, to host Chefs 4 Neighbors, a culinary benefit event to raise funds to support individuals and families with immediate needs. Proceeds from the event will go towards Neighbors 4 Neighbors’ Family Fund, a program that offers financial assistance to otherwise self-sufficient individuals who have an immediate need or emergency, preventing them from entering the cycle of poverty. The Family Fund will purchase supermarket gift cards for families experiencing food insecurity.

The brunch will launch Sunday, September 16th (Mexican Independence Day) and will continue every Saturday afterwards! Global Arts Project and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present the Tony Succar Mixtura Band, celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month Sunday September 30 from 4-7 PM in beautiful Collins Park.

Tony Succar has had the honor to share concert, festival, and nightclub stages with Arturo Sandoval, Néstor Torres, Tania Libertad, Richie Zellon, Mike Orta, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Victor Manuelle, Oscar de Leon, Tito Nieves, and Tito Rojas (among many others). Growing up in Miami, a multi-cultural “Melting Pot”, has shaped him in many ways to become a versatile musician. Being exposed to so many diverse styles of music has blessed him to make the most of his talent. His hit songs have been broadcast on radio stations all over the world. Tony’s song, “No Te Confundas”, took the first place spot in the show “Salsa y Punto” for three weeks.

“I tell you people, you are going to hear a lot about Tony Succar… and you will hear from him with golden letters. This production has stunned and it is something to talk about”, said radio host Ricardo Sánchez.

A special performance by expert salsa dancers will accompany the band.

As part of GAP’s educational outreach program, the concert will open with a set by students of Dr Ed Calle. Refreshments will be available for purchase, or bring your own. Admission is open and free. Catwalk for Charity, a local nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers impoverished children in Haiti through education, will be hosting their fifth annual fashion fundraiser and luncheon on Sunday, September 9, 2018, from noon to 4 p.m. at Fontainebleau Miami Beach, located at 4441 Collins Avenue in Miami Beach. World-renowned, Haitian-American actress Garcelle Beauvais and WPLG Local 10 news anchor Calvin Hughes will co-host the star-studded event. The Confidante Miami Beach, a playful oceanfront oasis in Miami’s mid-beach neighborhood, continues to be a hub for the latest artwork in Miami with its rotating solo art exhibit joined by contemporary street artist and muralist Skott Marsi. The rotating exhibit, which kicked off during the renowned Art Basel in November 2017 and reimagined every eight weeks with a new artist, is one of many curated, unique activities put on by The Confidante for guests and visitors to enjoy.

The rotating art exhibit has debuted a series of diverse, impressive Miami-based artists including Ivan Roque, Claude Charlier, Sam Dobrow and Nestor Arenas. On August 6, Skott will showcase his exhibit “Controlled Chaos” that encompasses abstract, realism paintings.

Raised in Long Island, New York, Skott Marsi is a street artist and muralist. He attended Queens University of Charlotte and studied Graphic Design and Digital Communications. When creating his pieces, Skott draws inspiration from Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Banksy. His work has appeared in galleries across the world – New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Amsterdam, London, Spain, Greece and Milan – and he attains international recognition as a top contemporary street artist. Skott’s installation at The Confidante fuses spray cans and paint to create bold, abstract-colored images to convey modern day pop culture. The artwork draws inspiration based off his Miami experiences. Moving to Miami in 2011, Art Basel opened up his eyes to the Wynwood Arts District and the endless opportunities for artists alike. The installation reflects his experiences throughout these last seven years of living and working in Miami, inspiration from the local community and the artists that he has connected and collaborated with.

The rotating art exhibit, located on the south side end of the hotel’s lobby, is complimentary to hotel guests and visitors.

The City of Miami Beach presents First Friday, a series of FREE concerts, this month featuring the Ashley Pezzotti Quintet. The show is August 3 from 7-10 PM at Normandy Fountain, Normandy Drive and Rue Vendôme.

Ashley Pezzotti is a seasoned jazz performer currently based in Miami, Florida. At the young age of 22, Ashley has already performed with many Grammy award winning artists including Keith Urban, Latin singer Juanes, Jon Secada, Chick Corea, Delfeayo Marsalis, Vampire Weekend, and Arturo Sandoval.

Capturing the heart of audiences with her extensive repertoire and roots in traditional jazz and bebop, Ashley creates an atmosphere of excitement that will transport you to another place and time. Her style is reminiscent of the great Anita O’Day and June Christy, and she performs with a level of maturity that is far beyond her years.

She was named a YoungArts winner for Jazz Voice in 2013, and was named a YoungArts winner for Popular Voice in 2014.

Over the years, Ashley has been given the opportunity to study under incredible musicians including Grammy Award winner Plácido Domingo, Cyrille Aimée, Kenny Barron, Branford Marsalis, Cheryl Bentyne, Kevin Mahogany, and Julie Silvera.

Carnegie Hall’s NYO2 makes its New World Center debut alongside Grammy Award-winning violinist Gil Shaham and NWS Fellows and alumni for an exclusive one-night-only event—the orchestra’s only public performance before its finale at Carnegie Hall on July 24.

NYO2 is joined by conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto for Mexican and Russian masterpieces, including the vibrant suite from Revueltas’s Redes, Prokofiev’s rich First Violin Concerto and Shostakovich’s dramatic Symphony No. 5.

NYO2’s 2018 season and six-day residency in Miami mark the start of a new partnership between New World Symphony and Carnegie Hall, which will see current and former Fellows mentoring and performing side-by-side with participating students from across the country, including many from South Florida.

Comprising a “remarkable array of talent” (The New York Times), NYO2 is an orchestral training program for talented young players ages 14–17 with a focus on recruiting musicians from communities underrepresented in classical music.

Join us on Thursday, June 21st for International Yoga Day and the first day of summer! In celebration of both, The National Hotel is hosting a special poolside yoga session at 7 p.m. by the hotel’s Aqua Club and Lounge.

Led by international instructor Jenny Cornero, the yoga class will pay tribute to “108,” a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga, by encouraging students to bend their bodies with 108 sun salutations, followed by deep Yoga Nidra (guided relaxation) that removes any remaining impurities to gather all the benefits of a deep unique experience. The one-hour class will be followed by refreshments and healthy appetizers, as well as drink specials.

Early bird tickets for the class are $35 per person until June 16th. For more than thirty years, Miami-based artist Karen Rifas has amassed a body of work that endeavors to understand and re-imagine space. Well known for her minimal cord and leaf installations, and precise, methodical line drawings, in 2016, Rifas began a focused exploration into the constructive possibilities of color. Employing densely hued shapes and irregular lines, Rifas creates spaces that oscillate between the two- and three-dimensional. Deceptive Constructions surveys this recent body of work for the artist’s first solo museum exhibition in over 10 years. Through variegated floor and sculptural installations, works on paper, and wood panel, Rifas uses a concise language of richly contrasted color to alter our perception of space.

On August 15th, make your way to the opulent Faena Theater to witness prodigious jazz pianist Matthew Whitaker in concert as part of Faena’s second annual Summer Jazz Series.

At just 17 years old, this gifted musician has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder. In addition to his on-stage acts, Whitaker has charmed millions through televised performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and FOX’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” on which he won first place.

A New Jersey native, Matthew Whitaker was born three months premature and later diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, which caused his blindness. With perfect pitch, he learned to play piano through listening and later became versed in Braille music during his musical education at The Harlem School of the Arts and Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz program. At age 13, he became the youngest artist ever endorsed by Hammond, and at age 15, Whitaker was named a Yamaha Artist, becoming the youngest musician to join the stellar group of jazz pianists.

Saturday May 19 at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre: Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When the world-class Mexican Ballet Compañia de Danza Clásica Quintana Roo travels to Florida to share the stage with the region’s leading contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, both meanings of the word will be invoked. On Saturday, May 19, at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre, the Mexican dancers will present the world premiere of their Puentes NO Muros, paired on the same program with an updating of the Miami company’s Bridges NOT Walls. The Bridges/Puentes project is a two-year collaboration between the companies, an effort to address directly issues of immigration, fear and overcoming isolation. After performing the works in their initial stages in 2017 in Mexico in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, and at the Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, the two companies now bring the finished pieces to the United States for this special joint performance.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.

Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.

In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”

In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

Having performed for audiences worldwide, Leon Foster Thomas is a unique force in modern jazz. The New York Amsterdam News has described his playing as “riveting, his artistry as unrivaled and his stage personality as dominant.” His virtuosic playing of the Steel Pan has enabled him to connect emotionally with the listener on every level. Foster was World Steelband Music Festival Soloist and Duet Champion of 2002 and 2004.

Special Guest Mino Cinélu is a legend.
