At just 17 years old, this gifted musician has achieved international acclaim for his awe-inspiring talent and performed across the world in impressive venues, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the renowned Apollo Theater where, at age 10, he opened for Stevie Wonder. In addition to his on-stage acts, Whitaker has charmed millions through televised performances on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and FOX’s “Showtime at the Apollo,” on which he won first place.
A New Jersey native, Matthew Whitaker was born three months premature and later diagnosed with Retinopathy of Prematurity, which caused his blindness. With perfect pitch, he learned to play piano through listening and later became versed in Braille music during his musical education at The Harlem School of the Arts and Manhattan School of Music’s Pre-College Jazz program. Mexican Company Joins Dance Now Miami For “Bridges/Puentes” Evening

Saturday May 19 at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre: Bridges are both symbols of cooperation and communication, as well as a real means of allowing people to move from one place to another, across a divide. When the world-class Mexican Ballet Compañia de Danza Clásica Quintana Roo travels to Florida to share the stage with the region’s leading contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, both meanings of the word will be invoked. On Saturday, May 19, at Miami Beach’s Colony Theatre, the Mexican dancers will present the world premiere of their Puentes NO Muros, paired on the same program with an updating of the Miami company’s Bridges NOT Walls. The Bridges/Puentes project is a two-year collaboration between the companies, an effort to address directly issues of immigration, fear and overcoming isolation. After performing the works in their initial stages in 2017 in Mexico in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, and at the Festival Internacional de Chihuahua, the two companies now bring the finished pieces to the United States for this special joint performance.

Innov Gnawa is a young musical collective dedicated to exploring Morocco’s venerable gnawa music tradition in the heart of New York City. Formed in the summer of 2014 by Moroccan expat Samir LanGus, the group draws on the considerable talents and expertise of Hassan Ben Jaafer, a Maâlem, or master gnawa musician, originally from Fes, Morocco.
Gnawa music is the ritual trance music of Morocco’s black communities, originally descended from slaves and soldiers once brought to Morocco from Northern Mali and Mauritania. Often called “The Moroccan Blues”, gnawa music has a raw, hypnotic power that’s fascinated outsiders as diverse as writer/composer Paul Bowles, jazz giant Randy Weston, rock god Jimi Hendrix, and the contemporary artist Bonobo. The music is utterly singular, played on an array of unique instruments — from the lute-like sintir that the Maâlem uses to call the tune, to the metal qarqaba (castinets) with which the kouyos (chorus) keep time and pound out clattering, hypnotic rhythms.
In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”
In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

The concert features singer/songwriter Leesa Richards, a storyteller, a soulful voice offering a soundtrack to the narratives of life. Her sound taps into the deep roots of R&B, the poetry of jazz and folk and the energy of rock. Her debut solo album, Mother’s Child, is a rich blend of soulful ballads, rock and R&B, and showcases her gifts as a songwriter; it is a universal story of love and loss. She has performed with a slate of powerhouse artists including Faith Hill, The Bee Gees, Kelly Clarkson, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King, and recorded with Barbra Streisand and Lenny Kravitz, among other artists. Cuban-born, Miami-raised with a vintage influence, EnVee’s background is as diverse as the music she creates. Her creativity comes from influences like Celia Cruz, Barbara Streisand, Frank Sinatra & Ella Fitzgerald to Luciano Pavarotti. She was accepted to the American Music and Dramatic Academy, a music conservatory in New York City where she quickly moved after graduating high school. This gave her the opportunity to study vocal performance, dance, acting and musical theater. Upon returning to Miami, Envee joined the music department at Miami Dade College where she became lead soloist for Juba Gospel Choir, leading them in a national competition and tour. She began her writing career shortly after that.
EnVee’s professional career has led her to a two year running show at Magic City Casino & The Casino at Dania Beach as the Opening Act for Kevin Ceballo. She has performed in great community events such as Miami Beach Gay Pride 2016 and Orgullo 2015. She wrote the theme song for the World Out Games Miami 2017, and had the honor of being the opening act for Cher at Hilary Clinton’s Presidential campaign fundraiser with the cast of The Cabaret South Beach at The Fillmore Miami Beach. She has sung the national anthem for The Florida Marlins in both 2012 & 2015, and was a special guest at the Orlando Pulse tribute at the America Airlines Area. EnVee was also invited to sing at the Miami Rocks Concert 2016 with the Miami Symphony Orchestra at the Adrienne Arsht Center. She was crowned the First “Ultimate Voice Miami” and has competed in National and International television singing competitions such as the NBC show “The Winner Is” and “Yo Soy El Artista” on Telemundo, finishing in the top 6.
EnVee can currently be seen as the featured singer at the Faena Theater, inside the Faena Hotel in their new resident show SENSATIA and is working on a new jazz project which promises not to disappoint. Her music is for all ages, multiple genres and pleases the masses. We can’t wait to hear what’s next!

The WOHASU 2018, that took place at the University of Miami, was a weekend filled with inspiring and educational talks about happiness. Leading experts in from various different disciplines, such as positive psychology, fashion, media, sustainability, economics, mindfulness, technology, and business, attended this year’s summit. The topics of the presentations ranged from sharing personal experiences and personal projects to talking about the science behind happiness. Of course, there were many more areas that were covered, but in some way, they all related to the main topic of happiness. This year, the WOHASU welcomed people from over 35 countries and 45 US states.
Every morning a few early birds participated in the outdoor yoga program, before attending the first talk around 9 am. Although the weekend was filled with many talks, and panels, there were also breakout sessions during which multiple experts presented in different rooms at the same time. This allowed attendees to chose presentations that they were most interested in. Attendees also had the opportunity to meet with coaches in small groups. These sessions were great for networking, but also for talking about the lessons learned and how to best implement and integrate the lessons into a daily routine.

On Friday, March 23rd, Faena Forum will call upon the awakened for a night of multi-disciplinary magic with Noche de Brujas, a festive celebration of female-driven performance art merging ancient rituals, visual art, technology, music, dance and more to create a contemporary ritual for the 21st century.
An “anti-concert” at the height of Miami Music Week, Noche de Brujas features an impressive line-up of artists who work with sound and music alongside musicians with strong visual language to create an immersive experience like no other. These eclectic artists align themselves with the esoteric and the spiritual, engaging in practices that verge on the shamanistic and the “brujeria,” including tarot readings, psychic divination and Yoruba religion as it is practiced in Afro-Cuban tradition.
Through each of their crafts, these artists are modern-day goddesses, sirens, aliens and witches who together will explore the gray areas between music and art, sacred and profane, traditional and futuristic – ultimately embracing the “witch” architype as a feminist and anti-patriarch in a larger movement that challenges preconceived notions of systems, knowledge, power…and the unknown.
The Noche de Brujas ceremony begins with a ritual cleansing of Faena Forum by Afro-Cuban dance and music group IFE-ILE, followed by an offering to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of the river representing womanhood in all of her forms. Through this practice, the space is converted into a living altar featuring inspired collaborative works by visual artists Virgo and Carlos Betancourt.
The night’s celebrations continue with a series of live performances, musical acts and immersive installations by Juliana Huxtable, Poorgrrrl, Voila Snow, Georgia Wall, Sandflower, Kalup Linzy, Jen DeNike, and Suzi Analogue.

He has worked with such notable artists as Richie Booker (Bob Marley’s brother), Cedella Booker (Bob Marley’s mother), and Florida’s leading musicians, working as a highly sought after freelance. Pokito played for a few Local bands such as: No Man Gin, Me and the Blue Dog as rock musician, The Aristocrats as Soca and reggae musician. After touring Japan with Richie Booker, he decided to put his band (Jean P Jam) together in 2002 where he introduced his original world beat style called “Deep Roots.”

Poetry and Jazz finds San Francisco writer Jack Hirschman joined by the Terni Jazz Orchestra Ensemble for an innovative evening of music, poetry, and politics, featuring the poet’s distinctive voice as an integral part of original music compositions. The longstanding collaboration between Hirschman and the group of Italian musicians, led by composer/arranger Marco Collazzoni and saxophonist Francesco Guzzetta, began at the International Poetry Festival in Sarajevo, Bosnia, thanks to the patronage of Casa della Poesia di Salerno, and culminated with the recording of a CD presented at Teatro Valle in Rome in 2014.
Hirschman is one of the most distinctive voices of the American counterculture, known for his radical engagement with both poetry and politics. His long literary career as acclaimed poet, essayist, and translator is interlaced with artists like Charles Bukowski, Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, and Lawrence Ferlinghetti. Born in 1933, he grew up in the Bronx and, as a young man, had an early brush with fame when Ernest Hemingway wrote him a letter, later published as “A Letter to a Young Writer.” Hirschman has lived in California since the 1970s. In 2002, he received the Book Award Life Achievement from the Before Columbus Foundation and in 2006 he was named Poet Laureate of San Francisco. Hirschman has published more than fifty volumes of poetry and has translated radical poets from around the world from Russian, French, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, Albanian, Yiddish, Vietnamese, and Creole.

As one of South Florida’s longest-running world music events, the annual Afro Roots World Music Festival celebrates the evolution of African culture by featuring some of the best performers from all over the Caribbean, the Americas and Africa.
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the festival, Community Arts & Culture, will present the Sun Ra Arkestra, musical torch-bearers for the late, great big-band keyboard innovator. The Arkestra carry on the traditions set by the cosmic philosopher born Herman Poole Blount, complete with full costumes and the songbook from Saturn.

Lace Clips and Greentouch USA Inc. founded by Jonathan Nussbaum presents The Big Serve, a professional tennis exhibition and clinic for inner-city youth in partnership with the Irie Foundation, Overtown Youth Center, EJ Biggers Foundation, The Lotus House and the City of Miami Beach. This marks the third annual fitness-driven philanthropic event produced by Nussbaum, designed to encourage children to play tennis while educating them about health and nutrition. On Friday, 650 children from the non-profit organizations will be able to enjoy and participate in four activity stations including meet and greet/autograph opportunities with pro tennis players and other notable local celebrities, an on-site tennis clinic offering lessons from pro tennis players provided by Howie Orllin, a fitness station featuring celebrity personal trainers provided by Ki Hara and local yoga instructors as well as a concession stand courtesy of David’s Café. Miami’s own DJ Michelle Pooch will be providing the music, to ensure kids have a fun, energetic afternoon to remember. A master trumpeter “uniquely poised to reconcile jazz and Arabic music without doing either harm” –the Wire
Iraqi- American musician Amir ElSaffar has created techniques to play on the trumpet the microtones and ornaments found in Arabic music but not typically heard on brass. As a composer, he uses this to create an innovative approach to harmony and melody, seen in his commissions for jazz ensembles, Chamber Orchestras, and Middle Eastern Ensembles alike.
In 2018, this annual series returns in collaboration with Miami Dade College’s MDC Live Arts. It invites audiences into a meditative space through instrumental, traditional and innovative sounds from the Middle East. With support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation’s Knight Arts Challenge and the Doris Duke Foundation, The Rhythm Foundation and MDC Live Arts create an opportunity to build a connection with cultures primarily in the public eye for conflict zones. Victoria Rogers, Vice President of Arts for Knight Foundation, said: “Few things can bring people together like the arts. Events like this series are a great prism for exploring our and other cultures, and for finding the threads that unite us all.”
In an immersive environment, the audience surrounds performers in an in-the-round stage setup. The evening also features culture-specific, traditional snacks and sweets to engage the audience in a multi-sensory experience.

The 3rd season of chef/restaurateur Jose Mendin’s acclaimed guest chef series, Mendin & Friends, kicked off in high style last month with two sold-out events with none other than world-renowned Chef Massimo Bottura. With its decidedly international scope this season, the 2018 season is positioned to be full of not-to-be-missed events. Enter internationally-acclaimed star Chef Rodolfo Guzman, the celebrated chef/owner of one of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants Boragó in Chile. Guzman joins Mendin for the February edition of Mendin & Friends, which is being curated in conjunction with Gluttonomy.
On Tuesday, February 20, in the heart of the hottest week for food and drink connoisseurs in South Florida, guests will be able to join Mendin and Guzman at a special, cocktail reception featuring a welcome drink, an array of passed bites curated by Mendin and a book signing of Boragó – Guzman’s personal collection of fascinating narratives about Chilean geography and ingredients. The book – available for purchase at the reception – displays sketches of some of Guzman’s dishes and outlines of his creative processes. Boragó introduces readers to the pleasure of Chilean culture and cuisine through gorgeous photographs of the country’s scenery and carefully-curated shots of Guzman’s gastronomy. Tickets are limited and priced at $50 per person (excluding service charge and tax) and will take place at Habitat’s chic cocktail bar and lounge, Elements, located on the mezzanine level. Start time 8PM.
On Wednesday, February 21, Guzman and Mendin will go into the kitchen of Mendin’s acclaimed new restaurant Habitat at 1 Hotel South Beach, for a special dinner. The exclusive multi-course event will feature dishes by both chefs as well as collaborative efforts, all paired with select wines. Seating is limited and tickets are priced at $350 per person (exclusive of tax and service). A brief cocktail reception will begin at 7PM; guests will be seated at 7:30PM sharp.
“One of the greatest benefits of Mendin & Friends is getting to cook with people I respect and admire and getting to spend time with them in the kitchen,“ says Mendin, who launched the series in 2015 at Pubbelly Noodle Bar. “I’m a big fan of Rodolfo and very excited to give him a platform to showcase his cuisine in Miami.”

The remainder of the 2018 season is in development but guests can look forward to upcoming dinners with celebrated chefs Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura and Mauro Colagreco, among others. Sunday, February 25, 4-7 PM: Global Arts Project, Inc and the Collins Park Neighborhood Association present vocalist Charenée Wade, celebrating Black History Month. First Runner-Up in the 2010 Thelonious Monk International Vocal Competition, Charenée is a notable singer, composer, arranger and educator. Her accolades include Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead Program where she performed her original music at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; being one of the talented four chosen for the Dianne Reeves Young Artist Workshop at Carnegie Hall; 1st Runner-Up in the Jazzmobile Vocal Competition; and being selected for the JAS Academy Summer Sessions, 2007-09, directed by Christian McBride. Charenée is currently a professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music, City College, and with the Jazzmobile Workshop program. She teaches various workshops and clinics and was an esteemed judge for the 2010 Jazzmobile Vocal Competition, alongside Dr. Billy Taylor and Grady Tate. Charenée performs internationally and graces the stages of the Jazz Gallery, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Dizzy’s Coca Cola, the legendary Smalls and the Zinc Bar in NYC. She has recorded two CD’s: Love Walked In (Independant 2011) and Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson (Motéma Music 2015)
