As leaders with the pulse of your community, your foundation is uniquely positioned to make a difference in this field. Join us at the 2011 Media Learning Seminar for a lively discussion and the sharing of ideas for action.

On Feb. 28 and March 1, 2011, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation will host the fourth annual Media Learning Seminar for U.S. community and place-based foundations. Over two days, local leaders, tech experts and your peers in philanthropy will explore how foundations can – and are – helping residents be informed about the issues that shape their communities.
In addition, presenters at the top of their field will speak, including Huffington Post Editor Arianna Huffington, Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and the FCC’s Steve Waldman, who has been charged with making recommendations to ensure a vibrant media landscape.
Much has changed in this area of philanthropy since the seminar first launched in 2008.

As traditional media has struggled, funders have increasingly viewed the need for information as critical as that of clean air, good jobs and thriving schools. In fact, over the last few years, more than 75 locally focused foundations have invested in partnerships that support local news and information projects – for a total of $165 million, a recent Knight Foundation survey found. Some of those foundations are our partners in the Knight Community Information Challenge, a matching grant program.

The result is a wealth of knowledge about funding news and information projects, which we will leverage during the seminar. At both plenary and in depth breakout sessions, participants will discuss what works, what doesn’t, and how we can all improve the local flow of information to better our communities.

With support from Knight Foundation, there is no registration fee for the seminar, which will take place at the Hotel Inter-Continental in Downtown Miami. Foundations can bring one senior staff member and one board member and registration is on a “first-come, first-served” basis until the seminar is full. Knight’s funding also makes possible a reduced hotel room rate of $229 per night for seminar attendees available through the on-line registration.

Winter Music Conference 3/8-12/11

Winter Music Conference
March 8 – 12, 2011
Miami Beach Convention Center
Miami Beach, FL

Winter Music Conference Announces 2011 Dates

Winter Music Conference’s 26th annual program will take place March 8 – 12, 2011 at the Miami Beach Convention Center and other venues throughout Miami Beach and the greater Miami area. Last year WMC attracted 3,763 registered music industry participants from 70 countries and over 100,000 event participants who took part in five non-stop concentrated days of seminars, workshops, exhibits and performances.

Over its 26-year history WMC has become known by industry insiders, audiophiles and fans alike as the pre-eminent date for merchandisers and manufacturers launching new music, technology and trends in the music business. According to Billboard Magazine’s April 3, 2010 issue, “WMC demonstrates (that) dance music retains a powerful allure among brands looking to connect with young, engaged consumers.”

During WMC, more than 500 annual industry gatherings and performance events boast one of the most sought after aggregations of legendary and emerging artists to be found in the world. WMC’s drawing power for assembling innovative music professionals and launching effective global campaigns is demonstrated year after year with career-launching performances and new releases by artists that have historically included Lady Gaga (WMC 2008), Rihanna (WMC 2006), the Black Eyed Peas (WMC 2009) and featured appearances in 2010 by artists like Deadmau5 and Grammy winner David Guetta, amongst hundreds of others. Of his appearance during WMC 2010, The Black Eyed Peas’ Will.I.Am told MTV News “I think it’s important to come out to WMC to test out the new beats you’ve been making — rockin’ the crowds, learning from the crowds”.

For 2011 WMC will continue to roll out new initiatives as part of its development plan bolstering the ‘WMC Experience’. Unlike previous events the conference has hosted at hotels such as the Fontainebleau and most recently the Eden Roc, this year will offer nearly unlimited opportunities for expansion and growth with its move to the Miami Beach Convention Center in the midst of South Beach. Organizers say “for many years WMC has been challenged to configure its rapidly developing program into limited meeting space.” This year we are able to offer the best of all worlds – enormous room for expansion of the industry program at one of the best locations in South Beach with easy access to the top venues, restaurants and beaches. We are also able to offer our delegates a diverse range of official WMC hotels from the historically luxurious Raleigh and Albion hotels to the plush new Grand Beach Hotel to the business-budget-minded South Beach Courtyard. Virtually every class of service, location and amenity at a price point to fit any budget are offered. WMC is widely known as one of the highest hotel occupancy generating events of the year in the South Florida area – so book your hotel stay early.

Currently the WMC industry badge is being offered at a promotional Early Registration rate of $275 (over 40% off the walk up rate) until November 30th, which includes access to all official WMC events across the conference dates. Marketing opportunities are currently discounted by 30% through December 10, 2010.

Blogalicious Weekend Celebrates Diversity in Social Media
President of National Urban League Marc Morial Scheduled to Appear as Keynote Speaker at the Second Annual Conference
Ritz-Carlton South Beach
Miami Beach, FL
October 8 to October 10, 2010

Blogalicious Weekend, the largest blogging conference celebrating diversity in social media, will host its second annual conference at the Ritz-Carlton South Beach in Miami, FL from October 8 to October 10, 2010. The three-day event dedicated to celebrating diversity in social media will bring together a group of savvy, influential and talented women bloggers to share ideas and inspiration in the context of Web 2.0.

Founded by Mamalaw.com bloggers, Nadia Jones, Nyasha Smith and Stacey Ferguson, Blogalicious Weekend was launched after these three practicing attorneys, who between them have seven children, realized that there was a dearth in the blogosphere when it came to the multicultural voices of women bloggers. They are also the founders of Mamalaw Media Group (MMG), a company devoted to raising the profile of women of color online.

“We believe this is an exciting opportunity to discuss the importance of blogging across ethnic communities,” says Mamalaw Media Group. “The conference will once again ignite a sense of unity within the multicultural blogging community, as well as educate marketers on the importance of our demographic in today’s marketplace, all while networking, building relationships, and promoting inspiration and success for each other.”

Blogalicious 2010 is expected to have an attendance of hundreds of social media influencers from various backgrounds. Featured workshops include Marketing to Women of Color, Building Your Social Media Tribe and The Value and Metrics of Diversity at Conferences.

Marc Morial, president of National Urban League is set to appear as one of the keynote speakers. He will speak on Sunday, October 10, at 9 a.m. The National Urban League is a historic civil rights organization dedicated to economic empowerment in order to elevate the standard of living in historically underserved urban communities. The Urban League recently celebrated its centennial in Washington, D.C.

Other speakers include Miriam Muley, The 85% Niche; Elisa Camahort Page, BlogHer, Inc.; Wayne Sutton, Social Wayne; and Dr. Otis Brawley, American Cancer Society.

Event sponsors include representatives from General Mills (My Blog Spark, Que Rica Vida, Feeding Dreams); General Motors (Buick and OnStar); McDonald’s; and Kellogg’s.

The Blogalicious Weekend conferences celebrate diversity among women in social media by offering educational, networking and social opportunities geared towards women (and men!) of all backgrounds. Blogalicious Weekend 2010, will be in Miami, Florida on October 8-10, 2010. Mamalaw Media Group, the founder of Blogalicious Weekend is responsible for other ventures, including monthly webinars called Blogalicious Bytes: Lessons in Social Media, My Blogalicious, a virtual community of contributing editors serving as a destination for news, entertainment resources and op-ed content for women of color online, and The bLink Marketing Network. Second annual event featuring diverse genres of new music will take place November 12-14 as key part of “Live Music Month in Miami”

Soul Of Miami Showcase!

MMF partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, FilMiami

Organizers of the second annual Miami Music Festival will present more than 500 performances by new and developing artists in an expanded roster of venues throughout the city. The showcase will take place November 12-14 during the newly designated “Live Music Month in Miami” and will include two daytime sessions on five stages in Bayfront Park and a show at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts.

A music industry and artists’ conference will take place at the Hyatt Regency Miami, the festival’s headquarters hotel, Friday, November 12, and Saturday, November 13. Musicians may submit showcase applications, register for the conference, and reserve discounted stays at the Hyatt at miamimusicfestival.org beginning May 15.

Partners include Miami New Times, The State of Florida Film & Entertainment Office, Miami-Dade County Office of Cultural Affairs, The City of Miami Office of Cultural Affairs, The Miami-Dade Office of Film and Entertainment, The Miami Downtown Development Authority, The Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, and FilMiami. The Miami Music Festival and Conference is also produced in cooperation with the Recording Academy, The Urban Network, and performing rights organizations ASCAP, BMI, and SoundExchange.

Performing at showcase festivals has become important for independent musicians who are using new media tools to produce, distribute and market their own music in an effort to reach broad audiences and raise awareness among music industry executives. Events such as the MMF attract discerning audiences to hear new acts or new music from established acts. South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, is just one example of a gathering that has provided opportunities to network with other artists and gain distribution opportunities.

“The MMF will again present an amazing array of rock, alternative, and singer/songwriter acts but will feature in equal measure Latin, urban, Caribbean, and jazz artists,” said the festival’s CEO, Irwin Kornfeld. “Miami’s live music scene continues to develop and grow, and the MMF is growing with it.”

Said Miami New Times publisher Kevin Thornburg: “As the most authoritative voice in the marketplace for the live music scene, we are honored to be a part of the Miami Music Festival. Miami already hosts an array of world-class film, art, food, and electronic music events, and the only missing piece was a live music event like the MMF.”

“The development of Miami’s live music community is important to the vibrancy of this city. Our great clubs and restaurants are the reason why so many people want to visit and live here, and live music is again becoming one of their best attractions. This is why our organization and so many others here have been supporting the growth of The Miami Music Festival. We welcome the festival’s artists, sponsors and members of the world’s music industry and look forward to offering them Downtown Miami’s warmest hospitality,” said Alyce Robertson, Executive Director of the Miami Downtown Development Authority.

The inaugural MMF in December 2009 attracted more than 18,000 attendees to see 270 acts in 75 shows on 25 stages. Here is some feedback from last year’s participants:

“I have been managing bands for eight years and brought SELBY to your festival. We had a great experience with the venues, the conference, and your MMF Staff. Because of their appearance, NBC has asked SELBY to perform at Relay for Life in February and to perform again on the NBC Miami 6 morning show. Thank you, MMF! The conference was well-thought-out, as so many aspects of the industry were covered — the A&R and publishing segments were standouts. We were well informed and left with the tools and connections promised. Thank you for a great experience, and we hope to be back @ MMF next year!” — Annie Robinson, CEO of Cobalt Management, for SELBY

“After our MMF show, a member of Diddy’s camp introduced himself and booked us on the spot for Diddy’s Superbowl party for music industry insiders and celebrities!” — the Basiqs

“Our band had a great time and appreciate all your efforts in making Miami Music Festival a great success. From the D’Addario Stage to the Rolling Stone Showcase, it was terrific. We would love to come back for Miami Music Fest 2010” — the Adam Lasher Band

“Thanks for having us out for the MMF 2009. We appreciated the support. MMF Music conference was especially helpful. We attended many panels and received incredible knowledge. We look forward to MMF 2010. Thank you!” — La Paz

“First off, let me say how PROUD I am that the MMF was even thought about! I left South Florida in an attempt to get my music heard. I have been singing back-up for Joss Stone for six years. I was so excited to learn of this conference. I want to thank the organizers of this event for showing what South Florida has to offer. I also need to say what a BRILLIANT idea it was to utilize different venues so that these independent artists can see what venues are out there and give the venue owners a chance to see what quality artists they can have play there. I thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of the MMF, and I hope to be involved with MMF again. Thank you for the opportunity!” — Antonia Jenae

Conference speakers and festival sponsors will be announced in the coming weeks.
