Taking place Friday, December 7, Brightline has partnered with Perrier Jouet and Absolute Elyx to bring riders an evening of champagne, specialty cocktails and nonstop entertainment. New to this edition of The Tasting Train is performances by Miami’s own Karla Croqueta, Charlie Chaplin, live contortionists and DJs all aboard the train. This immersive journey, perfect for lovers of art and luxury spirits, begins in West Palm Beach on board Brightline’s 7 p.m. train, with Perrier Jouet sampling along the entire route to Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

The Tasting Train experience continues with a visual feast upon arrival at Brightline Miami Central Station’s Select Lounge and the signature copper embellishments of Absolute Elyx set against incredible views of Biscayne Bay and the Downtown Miami skyline. This lively reception will feature live music, multiple tasting stations serving Perrier Jouet and signature Absolute Elyx cocktails; carefully selected cuisine options will be served as you enjoy the libations, all included with ticket purchase.

Guests can either return home to Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach in comfort via Brightline or choose to stay in Miami and experience all the city has to offer during Art Basel.

Tickets for The Tasting Train, which include the Perrier Jouet tasting on the train and Select Lounge Event are $200 and tickets to attend the Select Lounge event in Miami are $175. All tickets can be purchased via Eventbrite. The Tasting Train departs West Palm Beach at 7 p.m. and Fort Lauderdale at 7:39 p.m., arriving in Miami at 8:14 p.m. for the lounge experience. The return train departs at 9:43 p.m. from Miami Central.

Brightline will also be offering a 2018 Art Basel Pass, perfect for those who want to avoid the infamous Basel traffic coming from West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale area. What: Being located in the most artistic, culturally dynamic neighborhood, rácket holds high devotion to the art community. The eclectic venue is pleased to welcome Cuban artist El Sexto, also known as Danilo Maldonado Machado, to rácket’s weekly Homecookin’ party as a pre-Independence Day celebration.

The event will revolve around El Sexto’s live painting performance, which will transcend the radical Cuban politics with infectious energy, humor and freedom. His art breaks down barriers with its humane expressiveness and universal appeal, but goes far beyond the dichotomy of political systems. With the state of our country’s human rights cloudiness, El Sexto represents freedom of expression through his art, a nonviolent form of activism. Art is a universal language that unites humans from all different backgrounds with one common ground, creativity. Attendees will be able to meet the artist as he will be present throughout the night. El Sexto’s art on view will be for sale. In addition to his visual presentation, ladies drink free from 11:00 pm to 1:00 am, and snacks will be served throughout the night by Homecookin’ host since 1995, Shelley Novak.

About the Artist: El Sexto, also known as Danilo Maldonado Machado, is considered Cuba’s number one dissident artist. His dramatic exhibition was featured on every major outlet including The New York Times. Since 2008, he has not only brought his unique form of graffiti across the streets, alleys and decaying buildings of Havana, but has managed to produce an amazing body of paintings under increasingly intolerable conditions. Painter, graffiti artist, performance artist, master draftsman, dissident, pacifist, Havel Prize laureate, political philosopher and social media phenomenon: El Sexto is also a hero. He reconciles his life and his art, both showman and shaman. Above all, El Sexto’s essential medium is freedom and the world is his studio – even prison. His very name, El Sexto (“The Sixth” in Spanish) is a direct reference to the Cuban Five who were elevated to national heroes by Castro’s propaganda machine in 2014, after being released from a US prison on charges of spying. Deliver the Dream, a South Florida-based nonprofit organization that organizes retreats for families experiencing a serious illness or crisis, presents its 6th Annual Red Hot Party at Hunters. Generously amplified by Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino and hosted by Daisy Dead Petals & Electra, this year’s free anticipated event begins at 7 p.m. with a scorching charity date auction showcasing some of South Florida’s most eligible LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes of all ages.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Deliver the Dream’s first-ever LGBTQ Youth Retreat that will host as many 15 families (at no cost to the participants) to help them enhance coping skills, reduce stress and cultivate relationships with other families who have a child struggling with “coming out.” The retreat will also incorporate an HIV educational component and offer therapeutic discussions for both teens and parents. This retreat, along with nine other planned yearly retreats spanning various crises and medical conditions including autism, cancer, Down syndrome and epilepsy, combines traditional recreational activities with therapeutic activities, peer-to-peer discussion groups and expressive arts and music activities.

Guests will have the opportunity to mix and mingle with the select group of LGBTQ bachelors and bachelorettes who come with their own unique accompanying entertainment packages which may include concert tickets, outdoor adventures, performing arts shows, sporting event seats plus dinner and much more, plus bid on silent auction items, enjoy drink specials and have fun while benefiting a great cause.

Sprung! is back for 2018 at a new Wynwood location, offering the unlimited craft beer samples everyone craves, and a brand-new theme. Beer and sports have always been a winning combination, so SWARM has brought the two together to make this annual Sprung! Spring Beer Festival, the most fun, free-spirited, beer-tasting event in town. On February 28th at Ball & Chain, HAVANA CLUB rum will host the first-ever, private showing of the “Amparo” performance in Miami.

HAVANA CLUB rum recently launched its “Forever Cuban” campaign to uphold the authenticity of the rum’s Cuban heritage and assert its rightful place as the original HAVANA CLUB rum. To further affirm HAVANA CLUB rum as “Forever Cuban,” the brand is tapping into its heritage and retelling the story behind the original creators of the renowned rum with an immersive theatrical experience, aptly titled “Amparo.”

“Amparo” will transform attendees into travelers, complete with Cuban visas and travel guides, and transport them to the truth of the HAVANA CLUB story, beginning in pre-revolution Cuba in 1957 and concluding in modern day Miami. It is a story of industry and innovation, tragedy and betrayal, redemption and reclamation that many Cuban exiles have faced.

Along the journey, travelers will experience pivotal moments in the Arechabala family story that have defined the exiled rum brand. These emotionally charged scenes will unveil, for the first time, not only the injustices that the Cuban regime performed against the Arechabala family, but also the family’s long legacy. A legacy that the government tried to erase, but which history has recorded.

Most importantly, travelers will follow Ramon Arechabala, who managed to take his family’s rum recipe with him, out of Cuba. Ramon shared that recipe, along with the Arechabala family’s legacy, with Bacardi to ensure a future for what his family had made and what had been stolen from them. With “Amparo,” Bacardi is committed to honoring that legacy.

A record crowd of corporate and community leaders will attend the MCCJ 2018 Humanitarian Dinner where five notable citizens will join the cadre of those who have received the coveted Silver Medallion. The award will be presented to highlight and honor those whose life represents an outstanding contribution to creating an inclusive Miami. This year, the recipients will be honored at the InterContinental Hotel, 100 Chopin Plaza, on March 10, 2018.

“The MCCJ has a long history of uniting our community, fostering inclusiveness, and celebrating diversity. This year’s Silver Medallion honorees have helped spread this message of unity as they have each left their mark on Miami’s history,” said Tony Argiz, award’s dinner co-chair. “Conchy and I are honored to serve as the chairs of the MCCJ Humanitarian Dinner, and be able to recognize these deserving individuals. This year’s recipients include Betty T. Ferguson, former Miami-Dade County Commissioner; Rose Ellen Greene, philanthropist; Mitchell Kaplan, co-founder of Miami Book Fair International; and Myron J. “Mike” Brodie, former executive director of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, who will receive his award posthumously. The Clergy Medallion is being given to Rabbi Judith Siegal, senior rabbi of Temple Judea.

Since the establishment of the Humanitarian Awards in 1946, MCCJ has united the community in celebration of Miami’s diversity and in appreciation of those who have helped to build a more welcoming, inclusive, just and cooperative society. The award’s dinner will be hosted by the 2018 MCCJ Humanitarian dinner host committee and honorary chairs Effie and Dr. Nelson Adams, Marlene & Bob Josefsberg, and Lisette & Manny Medina.

Learn to capture the best of what’s in bloom at the Garden. This class will review the best camera settings to create different interpretative flower images in the garden. It will teach shallow focus and hyper focal techniques to create botanical art of the flora at Fairchild. Different lighting techniques to produce dramatic images will be used and there will be a review of the work of famous flower photographers, while exploring their different techniques. Time in the field will be used to learn how to manage the subject, use the correct approach and effectively compose the image. For this class students should be familiar with their camera’s basic exposure and focus controls as it will not cover basic camera operations. Sturdy tripods and cameras with interchangeable lenses or point-and-shoot cameras with close-up settings and user-adjustable settings are strongly recommended. A 90mm or longer macro lens is highly desirable. If you do not own a macro lens, you will need a good close-up lens (one that allows you to fill your frame with subjects four inches in length).
