Feeding South Florida Launches Wynwood Wall for Hunger Action Month

Brightly Painted Mural Displays Shocking Facts About Hunger in South Florida; Reflects Efforts of Hunger Action Month, September

Some of the world’s greatest artists working in the graffiti and art genre are helping the South Florida community to fight hunger. In celebration of Hunger Action Month (September), graffiti artists 3i7, Dism and Elite recently joined forces with Feeding South Florida™ and VSBrooks Advertising in Coral Gables to create a cutting-edge Wynwood Wall in Miami, featuring  alarming facts about hunger in South Florida.

Located on the outside of the building at 2121 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33127, the eye-catching, completed wall features a 88-ft world-class mural that displays bright orange (the color of hunger relief) and other colors and artistic graffiti. The wall will be up indefinitely.

Creating a mural for a nonprofit organization such as Feeding South Florida is a new concept for Wynwood Walls, which, among other things, are inspiring models for the revitalization of abandoned historic communities and must-see destinations for Miami. Wynwood Walls bring the world’s most renowned graffiti and street art artists to Miami.

In an “in-your-face” manner, the wall brings attention to the fact that the face of hunger is no longer only the homeless. It’s those who suffer in silence: children, the working poor, the elderly, handicapped and veterans. On a daily basis, nearly 1 million people in South Florida, including more than 340,000 children, face hunger.

The largest food bank in the state, Feeding South Florida strives to serve those who are food insecure through a local network of approximately 450 other nonprofit organizations in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and Monroe Counties.

VSBrooks Advertising, a continued supporter of Feeding South Florida, took the steps to coordinate the creation of the wall with the artists and donated all of the supplies. Diana Brooks, chair of Feeding South Florida’s Board of Directors, is co-founder and managing partner of VSBrooks Advertising.

“This wall is a very progressive way to reach out to the community and let them know what the true facts are about hunger in South Florida,” said Brooks. “Wynwood Walls and the artists have created a striking, real example of how everyone can help the community and join the fight against hunger, especially during Hunger Action Month.”

Hunger Action Month is a call to action to mobilize the public to raise awareness and take action in support of domestic hunger relief. During Hunger Action Month, Feeding South Florida is encouraging South Floridians to do something about it with a variety of events and activities.

Another way that members of the community can easily show their support for Hunger Action Month is to wear orange or go orange digitally on Thursday, Sept. 6, Go Orange! Day.

Feeding South Florida’s local calendar at www.feedingsouthflorida.org provides individuals with many exciting ways to participate in community efforts to end hunger throughout September.
