Description:

Join us at this month’s edition of #TheDiLL for a hands-on workshop exploring how digital objects and interaction can develop into virtual experiences by interdisciplinary artist and educator Ariel Baron-Robbins, followed by an experimental live performance by visual and sound artist Richard Moreno. Artists of all skill levels are encouraged to #BYOL (Bring Your Own Laptop) and follow along. Please note that the 7pm workshop starts on time!

7pm Workshop | Ariel Baron-Robbins: Create Animated Installation Art in the Spatial Internet

Technologist, educator, and Loop Art Critique founder Ariel Baron-Robbins will guide participants through the process of transforming handmade artwork into an immersive digital space by using digital scanning, Blender—an open source 3D modeling software—and XR environments. This hands-on workshop allows participants to build animated installations, experiment with interactive software, and learn to translate creative ideas into dynamic digital environments, with the final collaborative results transported for experience both online and in VR within the MUDVERSE by MUD Foundation.

9pm Performance | Richard Moreno: Corpse Chrysalis Live (through the cabinet of curiosities)

Artist Richard Moreno transforms sculpture into powerful instruments that harness the dark pageantry of extreme metal. For his debut at the DiLL, Moreno brings a massive, wheeled crate sculpture that unfolds to reveal dual screens, high-powered subwoofers, and a fog-filled ritual site where four musicians perform plug directly into the installation. Earplugs will be provided free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis.

This event is free and open to the public, and presented as part of the Knight Digital Innovation Initiative at Locust Projects. Complimentary refreshments are available for guests aged 21 and older courtesy of our 2025–26 sponsors The Tank Brewing Co. and Topo Chico.

This year’s festival is proud to feature more than 20 international, North American and East Coast premieres from 20 countries across Miami-Dade and Broward counties! Adding to the excitement of the festival will be a special recognition ceremony for Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black, whose Rock Out (USA, 2025) film will be screening on Monday, April 27, at Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale (1820 E Sunrise Blvd). Other special events, filmmaker panels and afterparties will add diversity to South Florida’s cinema scene.

Internationally acclaimed as one of the largest LGBTQ+ cultural festivals in the world, OUTshine will debut its first Opening Night Under the Stars party featuring The Dinner (La Cena) (Spain, 2025), a delicious blend of tension, history, and irreverent humor, on Thursday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m., at Miami Beach Botanical Gardens (2000 Convention Ctr Dr, Miami Beach). Adding to the excitement will be a special recognition ceremony for Dustin Lance Black, director of Rock Out (USA, 2025), an excavation of the queer roots of rock, punk and metal featuring Roger Daltrey, Dolly Parton, John Reid, Danny Fields and more, at the Monday, April 27 Paradigm Cinemas: Gateway Fort Lauderdale Cocktails & Cinema™ screening. An American screenwriter, director, producer, and LGBTQ+ rights activist, Black won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay in 2009 for Milk, a biographical drama film based on the life of gay rights activist and politician Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He also wrote the screenplay for the film J. Edgar and the 2022 crime miniseries Under the Banner of Heaven. Additionally, he worked on Big Love, Rustin and Mama’s Boy. Black served as a founding board member of the American Foundation for Equal Rights (AFER). Palestine, 1936. The uprising that took on an Empire. As villages across Mandatory Palestine rise against British colonial rule, Yusuf drifts between his rural home and the restless energy of Jerusalem, longing for a future beyond the growing unrest. But history is relentless. With rising numbers of Jewish immigrants escaping antisemitism in Europe, and the Palestinian population uniting in the largest and longest uprising against Britain’s 30-year dominion, all sides spiral towards inevitable collision in a decisive moment for the British Empire and the future of the entire region.

The evening unfolds through a series of engaging talks, beginning with Oviedo sharing insight into his artistic practice and the underwater worlds that inspire his work. Devon Ledbetter of Rescue a Reef highlights the power of citizen science and community involvement in coral conservation, followed by Andrei Steyn of Students for Coral Preservation, who brings a youth-driven perspective on climate advocacy. Dr. Lisa Beal, Professor of Oceanography at the University of Miami, rounds out the program with scientific context on ocean systems and global climate impact.

Guests will have the opportunity to explore the artwork, connect with speakers, and mingle between sessions, creating a dynamic and thought-provoking experience that encourages awareness, conversation, and connection. Seating is limited and RSVP is encouraged via Eventbrite.

From writer Ted Malawer (Red, White, & Royal Blue), Carbonell and Silver Palm Award-winning director Bruce Linser, and featuring stunning illustrations by multi-award-winning artist Bong Redila, Everything Beautiful Happens at Night is a tender, funny, and moving story about the life you have, the life you want, and who stays when the world gets quiet. Tickets are on sale now for Island City Stage’s East Coast premiere of the play which runs April 2- 26.

Ezra is a closeted children’s book author. Nancy is his fiercely loyal editor. Their creative partnership has shaped stories that delight generations. But when writer’s block pushes Ezra far past deadlines to deliver his latest book, a new voice enters the conversation and begins to change Ezra’s life, inspiring a controversial ending to Chipmunk and Squirrel, and testing the limits of his friendship with Nancy.

As a former literary agent for children’s book authors, then as an editor of children’s books, and ultimately as a children’s book author and novelist, himself, Ted Malawer has spun a tale close to home. Everything Beautiful Happens at Night was partially inspired by his childhood LGBTQ author heroes Maurice Sendak (“Where the Wild Things Are”) and Arnold Lobel (“Frog and Toad” books). The play held its world premiere at Capital Stage in Sacramento, California, in early 2025 and its second U.S. staging brings it to the award-winning Island City Stage in Wilton Manors, Florida.

Island City Stage’s production of Everything Beautiful Happens at Night, directed by Linser, stars Christopher Dreeson as Ezra, Laura Turnbull as Nancy, and Aidan Paul as Jake.

Everything Beautiful Happens at Night co-producers are Russell Vance, Michael Mullins and Terry Gaw; Lights and Sound Sponsor is Scott Bennett; Talent Sponsors are Paul Rolli & Bennett Quade and Robert Lee; Costume Sponsors are Rita Cassady and John Colemen; Set Sponsors are Margie & Trevor Fried; and Illustrations Sponsor is DC Allen & Ken Flick No Gay Hate Fund at Our Fund. Additional funding is provided by the following: The Our Fund Foundation, The Schubert Foundation Inc., the SHS Foundation, the Warten Foundation, and OutClique.

Individual show tickets start at $45. A Mimosa Sunday performance sponsored by John Fomook and Charles Lee will take place on April 12. A special Women’s Night at the Theatre sponsored by Barbara Signer and Fran Epstein will take place on April 24. The show runs for one hour and 40 minutes with no intermission.

Island City Stage believes that theatre should belong to the next generation of storytellers, artists, and audiences. Its new “30 Under 30” initiative invites patrons ages 18–29 to experience award-winning, professional theatre for just $30 per ticket (plus taxes & fees; subject to availability on Thursday and Friday evenings and Saturday matinees). Limit one ticket per patron per production. A government-issued photo ID will be required at will call. When ordering online, use discount code “30U30.”
