Are You Prepared? Miami Science Museum Presents
“Feel the Force: Hurricane and Other Hazards” FREE on Saturday, June 9
Adults and Children Alike to Experience Full Day of Free Activities and Informative Speakers on How to Best Protect Yourself Against Extreme Weather

The Miami Science Museum has joined forces with the International Hurricane Research Center and Miami-Dade County Emergency Management Department to deliver a full day of activities and informative speakers on how to be prepared for extreme weather such as hurricanes. Both adults and children will learn how best to protect themselves and their families/friends, their property, and their pets. Admission to the museum is free all day.

Miami-Dade County Emergency Management representatives will be on site to educate visitors about how to get prepared for hurricane season, provide fun activities for kids and answer questions. Representatives from the National Weather Service and local TV meteorologists will conduct live weather briefings using the Museum’s Magic Planet to showcase real-time weather. Visitors will also have the chance to learn what it takes to be a meteorologist by utilizing green screen technologies.

Interactive activities include the Wall of Wind, where visitors construct a house from balsa wood and then place them in front of the wind simulator to see whose house can withstand hurricane winds; Weatherworks, during which visitors can learn how the weather works in a fun and interactive way; an air cannon which demonstrates the power of debris during a storm, fire simulator trailer, hurricane wind tube and much more.

One of the day’s speakers is Bonnie Schneider, CNN weather anchor, appearing on Headline News and CNN Radio, as well as the author of the Extreme Weather column on CNN.com. Her first book, EXTREME WEATHER: A Guide To Surviving Flash Floods, Tornadoes, Hurricanes, Snowstorms, Tsunamis and Other Natural Disasters, was released in January 2012.
