The work of Bert Stern is legendary in American fashion and celebrity portrait photography. See a select group of his classic images along with the eclectic, cutting-edge photographs by emerging international talent that are on exhibit at Opera Gallery from December 29 to January 10th. The show called, “Pop and Photography,” also highlights masters of Pop Art including Warhol, Lichtenstein, Wesselman, Indiana, Ramos and Scharf. Photography has become a central element in the world of contemporary art and now ranks in the auction market at the level previously reserved for paintings, sculpture and drawings. The record-breaking explosion of sales of photographic prints has permanently impacted the art market. Opera Gallery’s collection of richly diverse photographs encompasses world-renowned artists whose works are regarded as classic and iconic, along with the more eclectic, cutting-edge photographs by emerging international talent.
Stern’s best-known work was commissioned by Vogue magazine, titled The Last Sitting. The collection of 2,500 photographs shot over a three day period are of Marilyn Monroe, and ironically, were taken just six weeks before her untimely death. Marilyn Monroe: The Complete Last Sitting was published in its entirety in 1992. Recently the artist recreated these photos with actress Lindsay Lohan posing as Marilyn Monroe.
