Presented in conjunction with Southern Prize: Legacy and Innovation in Contemporary Southern Visual Art, this program offers an opportunity to hear directly from the exhibition’s Florida artist and gain deeper insight into his practice. Known for his richly detailed charcoal drawings, Fuenmayor brings tropical imagery into unexpected encounters with chandeliers, architectural ornament, and other symbols of European grandeur. His work invites viewers to consider how histories of power, migration, and cultural exchange shape identity and belonging.

About the exhibition
Southern Prize: Legacy and Innovation in Contemporary Southern Visual Art marks the first South Florida presentation of the nationally touring South Arts 2025 Southern Prize + State Fellowship Exhibition.Featuring nine State Fellows representing Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, the exhibition celebrates the breadth and excellence of contemporary artistic practice across the American South. It brings regional artists into a wider public conversation, challenging narrow definitions of Southern art while exploring the relationship between inherited traditions and contemporary experience.Curated by Shannon Rae Lindsey, with Rosie Gordon-Wallace serving as DVCAI’s hosting curator, the Miami presentation places these works in dialogue with the Caribbean and Latin American diaspora, offering a distinctive setting for conversations about place, memory, and cultural connection.

Exhibition dates: November 19, 2026 through February 27, 2027.
