Why do the words “Miami” and “crime” and “noir” sound so natural together? How would you define “noir,” and how is the Miami kind different from that found anywhere else? What’s so special about Miami, its history, setting, weather, and its salad of inhabitants and their conflicting traditions that has attracted so many crime writers? In this workshop, we’ll investigate these aspects of life in Miami and look at how you can use them to create your own noir crime fiction. We’ll read and discuss short examples by such writers as Charles Willeford, James W. Hall, Les Standiford, John Dufresne, Elmore Leonard, and others. There will be writing exercises in class, and students will bring in copies of their stories or chapters to be workshopped by the class. Registration is now open.
