South Florida’s premier modern jazz organization is excited to privileged to present drummer Matt Wilson’s Arts & Crafts band featuring renowned trumpeter Terell Stafford. Mr Wilson is one of the most in-demand drummers on the New York jazz scene, acclaimed for his taste, sensitivity and his legendary humor that permeates every performance. In this show, Mr Wilson and bandmates will devote a portion of the performance to elucidating and demonstrating the important elements of the creative process that makes jazz a unique art form.

New York-based drummer and Grammy nominee Matt Wilson is one of today’s most celebrated jazz artists. He is also among the most admired artists by his drumming peers, not only because of his musical and melodic drumming style, but for his special gift of warmth and humor that makes everyone genuinely smile. Of course, he is also a gifted composer and educator. Matt’s positive energy and ability to explore a broad range of musical settings keeps him in demand for numerous bands.

In addition to leading Arts & Crafts and a very different quartet, Matt is an integral part of bands led by Joe Lovano, John Scofield, Charlie Haden, Lee Konitz, Denny Zeitlin, Jane Ira Bloom, and Dena DeRose, among others. He has performed with many legends of music including Herbie Hancock, Dewey Redman, Andrew Hill, Bobby Hutcherson, Elvis Costello, Cedar Walton, Kenny Barron, John Zorn, Marshall Allen, Wynton Marsalis, Michael Brecker, Pat Metheny, Bill Frisell and Hank Jones. Wilson has appeared on 250 CDs as a sideman and has released 14 CDs as a leader.
Matt has been featured on the covers of DownBeat and JazzTimes magazines and was for 5 consecutive years voted #1 Rising Star Drummer in the Downbeat Critic’s Poll. The readers of JazzTimes recently chose him as one of the top 4 drummers in the 2010 Readers Poll.
Add the pure trumpet and flugelhorn virtuosity of Terell Stafford, the versatility and originality of organist Gary Versace, and the solid propulsion of bassist Martin Wind and you have Arts & Crafts – a band with a groove and a style that is absolutely original. In Matt Wilson’s words, “this band eliminates the moat that often exists between the front of the stage and the audience.”
