Mayor Julio Robaina and the City of Hialeah Council are proud to announce the City’s participation in this year’s National Light’s on Afterschool Event. We will be one of more than 7,500 sites across the nation sending the message that afterschool is key to children’s success, and that we must keep the lights on and doors open after school.

On Thursday, October 21, 2010, the City of Hialeah’s afterschool programs – Creative Learning & Play (CL&P) and Young Leaders with Character (YLC) will be hosting two fun-filled events. To kick-off our celebration, Mayor Julio Robaina and Hialeah City Council will proclaim October 21, 2010 as Lights on Afterschool Day in Hialeah.

Wilde Community Center will host a game of “Are You Smarter than Me?” similar to the popular game show, “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” where CL&P participants will compete with Hialeah Councilwoman Vivian Casals-Muñoz, Hialeah’s Fire Chief Marcos de la Rosa and Florida House of Representative Esteban Bovo Jr., along with other business and community leaders, City Officials and media representatives in a battle of wits.

Middle and high school students from our YLC program and their families will participate in our version of “Family Feud”. This should prove to be an exciting and fun event for both the students and their parents. The event will be held at the City of Hialeah Educational Academy from 5:00-6:30pm.

Invited guests include: City of Hialeah Mayor and Council; local elementary and middle school principals, Miami-Dade County Public School (M-DCPS) Regions I, II and III Directors; M-DCPS board member, Perla Tabares-Hantman; CEO for The Children’s Trust, Modesto Abety; County Commissioners, Jose Diaz, Natacha Seijas and Rebecca Sosa; Mayor de la Cruz from Hialeah Gardens; Miami-Dade County Mayor, Carlos Alvarez and County Manager, Mr. George Burgess; Senators Bill Nelson and George LeMieux; State Representative Marco Diaz-Balart.
