Exploring the lasting cultural, ecological, and historical impact of its native plants and crops
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Drawing on materials from the Jay I. Kislak Collection of the Early Americas, Exploration and Navigation, “Roots of the Americas” explores the enduring significance of crops native to the Americas, including corn, tobacco, cacao, and a variety of medicinal flora. The exhibition highlights the deep relationships Indigenous communities developed with these crops and the ways botanical knowledge and agricultural practices shaped societies across the hemisphere long before the arrival of Europeans. These plants held spiritual, cultural, and economic meaning, and they played a central role in sustaining community life.

“Roots of the Americas” also examines the profound changes that followed European contact. As these crops entered global markets and imperial systems, they reshaped local economies, altered landscapes, and influenced daily life throughout the Americas. Their histories continue to define contemporary foodways, economies, and cultural identities, revealing how the legacies of colonialism remain present today.

Her creative journey is fueled by a desire to connect people through art—whether it’s through large-scale murals, interactive art workshops, or painting parties that bring communities together. Her pieces blend acrylic paint, spray paint, wood, and mirrors that not only transform spaces but also remind us that art heals and reflection fosters growth. She aims to make art accessible, meaningful, and powerful, while inspiring others to discover their own creativity.

The archival photography component chronicles African American life in South Florida from the 1900s through the 1960s. From family and school life to segregation, peaceful protests and triumphs, the selected photos offer insight how our community has evolved and overcome. Curated by Dillard instructor Celestin Joseph, the advanced placement student showcase illustrates a cultural reflection of today’s issues as see through the lens of upcoming young artists.

Joseph received his master’s in fine arts in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. He received a bachelor’s in fine arts, cum laude, from the University of Hartford as a painting major, with an art history minor, and concentrations in printmaking and graphic design studies. Joseph also received a prestigious Yale/Norfolk Art and Music Scholarship to further his studies. Currently, he is teaching Advanced Placement studio art classes at his alma mater Dillard Center for the Arts where he has been strengthening the visual arts program since 1999.

Mostly Baroque presents Classical Music Performance Festival 2/26/26

Mostly Baroque presents Classical Music Performance Festival
Thursday, 02/26/2026-, 07:00 pm-09:00 pm
Adrienne Arsht Center
1300 Biscayne Blvd.,
Miami, Florida, 33132
Website
Cost: $70.20

Mostly Baroque presents an intimate three-concert series from February 26 – March 1, 2026 in Carnival Studio Theater, making its debut during the Adrienne Arsht Center’s 20th anniversary season. The South Florida-based instrumental ensemble is dedicated to historically informed vocal concerts and instrumental performances of the music of Bach, Handel, Telemann and Vivaldi, among other Baroque composers.

A Baroque orchestra is more intimate in both size and sound than a modern symphonic orchestra, featuring violins, violas, celli, double bass, harpsichord, flute, oboe, and trumpet. The musicians perform on period instruments or faithful reproductions, using Baroque bows that produce a warmer, softer and more nuanced tone than modern orchestral ones. This historically informed approach allows audiences to experience the music much as it would have been heard in the 18th century – with clarity, balance, and a natural expressiveness that highlights the beauty and detail of the compositions.

Mostly Baroque concert series schedule:

Thursday, February 26, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. – The festival opens with J.S. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos Nos. 2, 3 and 4, and a performance of GP Telemann’s Don Quichotte suite. (Running time: 120 minutes.)
Friday, February 27, 2026 at 7:00 p.m. – Rising bass-baritone concert artist and composer Johan Hartman will perform Gerald Finzi’s Let Us Garlands Bring (a setting of five Shakespeare songs), along with the Don Quixote songs of Jacques Ibert (written for the 1933 film) – performing famous works in English, French, German and Italian. The program will also feature several original song cycles from Johan Hartman’s debut EP album, Blood and the Moon, recently released on Constitution Records. (Running time: 60 minutes.)
Sunday, March 1, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. – The festival concludes with the ensemble’s critically acclaimed production of Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona, a light and charming comedic chamber opera about a servant’s plan to become the master of the house, starring Johan Hartman and soprano Yi-Chun Sarah Tsai. Special guest stars include The Miami Oratorio Society, an African American chorus performing Black Spirituals by African American pioneering composer Florence Price and choruses from Handel’s Messiah with the Mostly Baroque Chamber Orchestra. (Running time: 75 minutes.)
