Marilyn Monroe Tribute To A Female Icon Opening Reception 8/22/12

Through a symbolic relay with Italy and the U.S., on the dates that marked her life, the Galleria Ca ‘d’Oro dedicated the exhibition “Marilyn Monroe: Tribute to a Female Icon” to the American actress

She seduced the world from the big screen and won a place in the hearts of exceptional artists. Fifty years after her death, Marilyn Monroe remains an icon for female excellence that continues to inspire the art world.

Through a symbolic relay with Italy and the U.S., on the dates that marked her life, the Galleria Ca ‘d’Oro dedicated the exhibition “Marilyn Monroe: Tribute to a Female Icon” to the American actress.
Including a life-size Marilyn wearing a white dress immortalized by Seward Johnson in her most famous pose, an unusually lanky rendition by Valentina De Martini, a naked Marilyn immersed in color by Pablo Echaurren, and pop Interpretation by Ludmilla Radchenko alongside members of the Marilyn series produced by Andy Warhol and those constructed by Mimmo Rotella. The tribute to the legendary Marilyn comes to life in an 18-work exhibition that includes paintings, photographs, and sculptures.

The exhibition’s first stop was in Rome, in the historic Palazzo Wedekind in Piazza Colonna, only a few days after what would have been the stars 86th birthday, then the exposition heads to the Galleria Ca ‘d’Oro in Miami Florida, where the inauguration will be held on the date that marks the fiftieth anniversary of Marilyn’s death. For this symbolic reason curators Gloria Porcella and Lamberto Petrecca have chosen the months of June and August for the double launch for the exhibition.

June 8th: The exhibition kicked off in the nineteenth-century Palazzo Wedekind in Piazza Colonna with the arrival of Seward Johnson’s sculpture from the Croisette in Cannes, where it was exposed during the presentation of Simon Curtis’ film “My Week With Marilyn”.

August 5th: The exhibition arrives in Miami where it will be hosted by the Galleria Ca ‘d’Oro in Coral Gables. Grand opening August 22nd.

The Artists In The Exhibition
Andy Warhol – His serial reproduction of Marilyn’s face in the 60s transforms her into a “popular” icon.
Mimmo Rotella – His series of décollage praises Hollywood’s brightest stars. Rottella’s works redefine the meaning of Marilyn’s death by constructing works pieced together with popular images of her life.
Seward Johnson – Considered among the most original artist of our time, Johnson is famous for his realistic, life-sized bronze sculptures that depict everyday characters absorbed in mundane activities. Of great visual impact and recognized for their ability to inspire amazement, his works include a Marilyn immortalized in one of her most famous poses.
Pablo Echaurren – The works of Echaurren combine a variety of elements: the marked attention to miniaturized detail, the reference to the comic strip, and images of the natural universe. The exhibition presents a naked Marilyn immersed in an explosion of color that marks his signature style.
Renzo Nucara – Founding member of the Cracking Art Group in 1993, Nucara chooses to work with plastic in order to make a statement on society’s commitment to the environment. His pieces reflect his research of Resinfilm, which consists of layers of resins, pigments, and natural and artificial objects, which become the skeleton of his most recent works of Statofilm.
Erika Calesini – Irresistibly drawn to the expressive value of the subjects, Calesini creates works using discarded materials, such as bicycle part and inner tubes, rescuing them from their fate as landfill. Her process asks the audience to reflect of the value of objects and the part of them that is intrinsically attached to our lives.
Valentina De Martini – The works of the talented artist exude elegance and charm, characteristics that are synonymous with the subject of Marilyn Monroe.
Camilla Ancilotto – Totems that continuously mutate in appearance and color make up the works by Ancilotto. For the Roman artist art is a game with infinite representational possibilities.
Monica Casali – Fresh from a recent exhibition at the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro in Miami, Casali reveals a smiling, bright, and colorful Marilyn that is very much in accordance of the Warhol Style.
Cristiano Cascelli – The acute portraits by Cascelli immortalize his subjects in a Pop style using a variety of techniques that showcase his unmistakable talent.
Florence Fabre –Fabre creates lively and captivating images. Her portraits consist of fragments of photographs that she reconstructs in order to offer a new perspective and give a new identity to her subject.
Fabio Ferrone Viola – Ferrone exemplifies the Pop movement by depicting prevalent icons with his clever use of American soda cans.
Leonardo Hidalgo – A native of Ecuador, Hidalgo has lived and worked for many years in the U.S., where he is considered one of the most effective and perceptive portrait artists of our time. Accomplished in a number of distinct techniques, such as painting, pastels, photography, and computer graphics, Hidalgo portrays his celebrated subjects using vibrant colors.
Massimo Lupoli – Lupoli extrapolates objects and symbols of our everyday lives from their original contexts and places them in diverse setting that give them new significance. The work presented in the exhibition consists of a photograph superimposed on a stretch of the artist’s brushes.
Flavia Mantovan – The icons of our time are the undisputed protagonists of Mantovan’s works. Characters whose faces almost liquefy under the color of cola and a stain that threatens to take over the breakdown symbolizes that everyone, including our celebrated stars, is doomed
Daria Paladino – Trained in Rome and Paris, Paladino’s artistic trajectory carries her to the Lazio Pavilion at the 54th Venice Biennale in 2011. Her study focuses primarily on portraits.
Ludmilla Radchenko – Radchenko references Pop Realism in her elaborate digital works, photos and scans, which are combined with a distinct material painting to create portraits of icons of contemporary life.
Marcello Reboani – The portrait genre constitutes the leitmotif of Reboani’s artistic career. His works speak to the audience of the contemporary world through a parade of famous and anonymous faces, which allows him to further his investigation of human nature.
Fabiana Roscioli – Renowned painter and photographer, she interprets the beauty of Marilyn in a succession of images depicting nude women.
Sasha Torrisi – The versatile painter and musician (former singer and guitar player for the Italian band Timoria) uses a Pop Art technique that renders his favorite subjects in a particular light, in which they appear pure, smooth, florescent, and beyond any physical authenticity.

Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, one of Rome’s best known contemporary art galleries, is located in Piazza di Spagna overlooking the Spanish steps. It was established in 1970 by Antonio Porcella, son of Amadore Porcella, one of the most important art critics of the period and the grandson of Alpinolo Porcella, personal friend of great Italian Masters such as Filippo de Pisis and Giorgio de Chirico. Antonio Porcella is a current member of the de Chirico Foundation in Rome.

Today—four generations later—Gloria Porcella leads the gallery. Raised in Rome, Gloria studied at San Diego State University and has worked as a Councilor for the city of Rome where she was responsible for the Cultural Commission, was Head of the Culture Center in Rome, and worked with Italy’s Environmental Minister. Over the years, Gloria Porcella with her business partner Lamberto Petrecca, and the help of Architect Silvia Zamarion has curated several important exhibitions in Italy and in the United States, including “Omaggio a de Chirico” in New York, Los Angeles and Miami, which had aegis of the UN, patronage of Italian and foreign Institutions; and the sensational first installation of the REgeneration Art Project in Syracuse, Italy during the G8 Environmental Summit.
In December 2010, during ArtBasel Miami, the Galleria Ca’ d’Oro Miami opened its doors at 135 San Lorenzo Avenue in Coral Gables with the placement of the unforgettable pink snails, extending the REgeneration Art Project to the United States. Today the gallery continues to bring its experience and expertise to the US, promoting Italian and European art with passion and enthusiasm.

Marlins Park: A Beer-Drinking, Philly-Fan’s Perspective

So I’m probably not the first person to write about going to the new Marlins Stadium. You know what? I don’t care. Let me give you the Philly guy version.

I just got home from a game where my Phillies lost, actually being swept by the Marlins this series. Phillies fans are hardened already to that always being a possibility, so whatever. Upon arriving back at my house, I cracked open my first beer of the day since I wasn’t able to locate anything edible at the stadium. Corona Light on tap? What that hell? I didn’t even know they did that!

I was told by a few locals that if I wanted to venture all the way behind home plate, I might find a cart with a Bud umbrella serving Kona Longboard or Firerock Pale Ale or Widmer Drifter Pale Ale. All for the bargain rate of $8 or $10 apiece. Pass! Anyway, I only made you go through that shitty beer tirade because I moonlight for this other website when I’m not raking in the dough at Soul of Miami. LOL.

So let’s make this about the new stadium and my experience. Keeping on theme, I arrived EARLY, at around noon for a 1:10 pm start. I pre-paid for lot parking since I wasn’t sure if I wanted to leave my car triple-parked in the yard of the guy with an iguana on his shoulder. You know, if you arrive a little early, you can park right by the stairs on the second level. Try it!

Unfortunately, playing catch and drinking beer and barbecuing  in the garage just seemed a little inappropriate. I’m pretty sure it was also illegal or at least I’d have been eventually asked to stop. Sun Life has a tremendous advantage over this place when it comes to traditional (and fun) tailgating. I didn’t smell one hot dog being grilled. Sucked!

The stadium was impressive from the outside. My kids were in awe even as we approached from the highway. As we walked toward the entrance, all we could see was a sea of red. Yeah, the Phillies may as well have been playing a home game or at least a neutrally-located game. Phils fans are the best. We gave our tickets and walked up about 60 or so stairs. I did see signs for elevators, but I need the extra exercise.

When we walked in, very cool. The presentation AND the temperature. 90+° outside, very comfortable inside. That retractable roof kicks ass! We found our seats in the Home Run Porch, another 40 or 50 steps up into the upper deck of the outfield. Again, there were elevators, but I think on the inside of the building, an escalator there would have been appropriate. There were not bathrooms or concessions or even shitty beer on that level, just A/C ducts. I like going up and down as much as the next guy, but this was ridiculous.

So we chilled and took some photos. They had the Clevelander and a swimming pool beyond the left field wall. Above that was a Budweiser bar. I was hoping they might be serving Goose Island, but it was more of the same crap. In center field, they had an artsy contraption that spins marlins and spits water when a Marlin hits a home run. Unfortunately, I got to see that in action a few times today.

Both of my kids said one thing that I was only thinking. Wowsa was the seating set-up STEEP! They didn’t even want to turn their backs to the field for a picture because they were nervous of falling backwards. By the end of the game though, we all felt we were watching in our living room, like a bunch of actual baseball players were performing for us alone. Was cool. And every seat in the house was solid, though not accounted for today.

Typical baseball game. They opened the roof afterwards which was pretty fun to see. Nice facility. Beats the hell out of sweating at Sun Life or anywhere outdoors in Miami. The roof was the best part and made for a comfortable experience. The Marlins should totally hire at least one additional person per exit to sweep up all the cigarette butts that I had to practically wade through on stairs exiting the stadium, the same ones I was happy to use as exercise on the way up. Was disgusting. Seriously, not just a few, it was deep.

Anyway, enjoyable because of the temperature. But I can’t forget it’s more out of my (and everyone in Broward and Palm Beach) way, the higher priced tickets, by almost double, and the no tailgating/baseball/chilling with people experience that should be part of every game. Probably won’t go back this season.

Radical Genealogy: The Decline of Dauphins, Courtesans, and Hounds 7/14/12

Radical Genealogy: The Decline of Dauphins, Courtesans, and Hounds
July 14, 2012, 7pm to 10pm
Hardcore Art Contemporary Space
72NW 25th Street
Miami FL 33127
www.hardcoreartmiami.com

Hardcore Art Contemporary Space presents the first solo exhibition in Miami of Cuban artist Carlos Gámez de Francisco (b. Holguín, Cuba, 1987): “Radical Genealogy: The Decline of Dauphins, Courtesans, and Hounds”, curated by Aluna Curatorial Collective | Adriana Herrera & Willy Castellanos). Gámez appropriates the aesthetic of the opulent and decadent atmosphere of the days of the last French monarchs to create a parable of absolute power. Black humor serves as the narrative thread linking pictorial scenes in which the bloody and the absurd converge with ostentatious fashion. Each frame opens a window onto a story that functions simultaneously as a prophetic mirror: in its background one may catch a glimpse of the fate that awaits the characters thriving on excessive power. Its different modes of perpetuation, sometimes associated to a perverted Eros, culminate − as do the diverse series and animations by the artist − in the genetic defects (metaphors for the social disorders) and in the death sentences which the French Revolution associated with the guillotine. The famous attraction of the abyss exerted by the unrestrained libido is as strong and deceitful as the seduction exerted by the libido imperandi, the wish for unlimited power.

Despite being a young emerging artist, this will be his 13th solo exhibit. In 2011, he won the Norman Kohlepp Merit Awards, from the Louisville Visual Art Association, Louisville, Kentucky. In 2007 he won the award for Best Short Film in the Seventh National Festival of Audiovisual “By First Time”, Holguín, Cuba.

Wake up Miami! It’s not just about Wynwood Art Walk anymore, it’s about the Bird Road Art District, igniting over 30 art galleries and growing every month…

Seriously! It’s not about the who’s who, but about the “who”. Let us meet Chris Riggs. He’s an artist who paints with geometric shapes and vivid colors, acrylic and spray paint on canvas, and has a mindset for making a wall come alive.

“My latest show has been in the works for a year. I’m introducing to the art world some of the most unique pieces I have ever painted,” Riggs says.

Ave 74 – A Miami Art Gallery, will be hosting the Chris Riggs solo show. “We are the latest gallery to move into the Bird Road Art District.” Says 14 year frame shop owner, Adam Brand of Frames USA & Art Gallery. In a short amount of time, this new addition to the art district has attracted hundreds of new art lovers to the area with it’s May and June exhibits.

“After seeing so many art galleries doing the same thing over and over again, I wanted to introduce an art gallery that will always have the hands-on touch with the artist present. For this month’s expo, walking into my gallery will give people a sense of taking a blank canvas and turning it into a message that will make our visitors say, ‘I need this in my life’.” Brand says. “We will also donate part of the sales from the July 21st event to Camillus House.”
