On August 17th, 2013 from 5PM to 7PM at the Ward Gallery in Overtown, new school will meet old school in a special back-to-back edition of Expressions presented by The Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida. Featured spoken word performers Anomaly, Poettis and the venue’s first nationally recognized visiting poet, Taalam Acey will follow the youth edition. Anomaly and Poettis have been leading ladies among the Miami spoken word circuit for a number of years, groomed in the era of famed slain poet, Will “Da Real One.” Acey, a New Jersey native, currently residing in Baltimore, MD has presented his spoken word on a national platform and has frequently been featured on BET, at the Essence Music Festival and in Essence Magazine.

The Expressions double feature is August 17, beginning with Youth Expressions starting at 5 p.m. and Expressions at 7 p.m. and will feature music by Jody Hill and Deep Fried Funk Band. There will be a cash bar and delicious food available for purchase. Expressions double act will lead with Youth Expressions, an adolescent version of the regular monthly event featuring the spoken word, musical and performing arts talents of young people from, in and around the Overtown community. The Youth showcase starts at 5 p.m. and will feature youngsters presenting their own spin on the ‘Expressions’ format, showcasing their skills in poetry and music. Many of the adolescent performers are participants in the arts program at Urgent, Inc., a Black Archives’ community partners in Overtown.
