HistoryMiami, one of Miami-Dade County’s oldest cultural institution, has been accepted as a Smithsonian Affiliate. HistoryMiami will join 164 other Affiliate museums and cultural organizations in the United States, Panama and Puerto Rico. On Thursday, July 28 at 11:00 a.m. Claudine Brown, Assistant Secretary for Education and Access for the Smithsonian Institution, will formally present HistoryMiami with its Certificate of Affiliation.

As an affiliate, HistoryMiami will have access to Smithsonian resources—including collections, scholarship, traveling exhibitions and membership benefits. The new Smithsonian membership benefits provided to HistoryMiami members may include subscriptions to publications, discounts at Smithsonian Museum stores and online stores, or travel and study opportunities.

This affiliation will provide visitors with a rich learning experience that will help them better understand our region,” said Robert McCammon, president of HistoryMiami. “By integrating with the Smithsonian, HistoryMiami will greatly enhance the educational experience of the thousands of school children served each year,” said Cecilia Dubon Slesnick, education vice president.

Established in 1996, Smithsonian Affiliations is a national outreach program which develops collaborative partnerships with museums, educational, and cultural organizations to share Smithsonian Institution resources with Americans in their own communities. Smithsonian Affiliations works with Affiliates to enrich communities with Smithsonian scholars, public programs and professional development opportunities. More information about the Smithsonian Affiliations program and current active Affiliates is available at www.affiliations.si.edu.

“We are delighted to announce our new relationship with HistoryMiami,” said Harold A. Closter, director, Smithsonian Affiliations. “Miami’s story is, in many ways, the story of all Americans. We are looking forward to all the ways in which we can combine the strengths of both of our organizations – scholarship, collections, and educational programming — to tell this story both locally and nationally.”

Thank you for using Soul Of Miami!
