to Deliver Lecture Series on Cuban Painting
at Cernuda Arte

A six-lecture series on Cuban painting focusing on a historical overview from the
Colonial period through the 1960s. All lectures will be held at Cernuda Arte â€“
3155 Ponce de Leon Blvd., Coral Gables, Florida. This series will begin on Wednesday,
September 22 and continue through Wednesday, October 27, 2010.
Professor MartÃnez is a renowned art historian, researcher and writer in the field of
Cuban art. He is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Art and Art History
at Florida International University, who teaches courses on European and
Cuban Modern art. He has authored various books, Cuban Art & National Identity:
The Vanguardia Painters 1927-1950 (1994); Maria Brito (2009),
and Carlos EnrÃquez: The Painter of Cuban Ballads (2010).
FIRST LECTURE – Painting in Cuba During the Colonial Period
SECOND LECTURE – Outstanding Early Twentieth Century Academic Painters
THIRD LECTURE- The Beginning of Cuban Modernism 1927-1938: The Vanguardia Painters
FOURTH LECTURE – Cuban Modern Painting in the 1940s: â€œThe School of Havanaâ€
FIFTH LECTURE – Dynamics of Abstraction and Figuration in Cuban Painting in the 1950s
SIXTH LECTURE – Ebullience and Turmoil, Cuban Painting in the 1960s
Each lecture will be illustrated by a PowerPoint presentation allowing the audience to
view examples of works by the artists mentioned. Lectures will run for approximately
60 minutes with a question and answer session following the presentation.
Registration cost: $100.00 (six lectures) or $50.00 (three lectures)

All funds collected will be donated to Professor MartÃnez for future research projects.
