Miami, Fla. – Water Rites: New Works, a group exhibition of paintings by GUILD, curated by Ricardo Pau-Llosa opens on June 14th from 7pm to 10pm at the Bakehouse Art Complex, BAC. GUILD, constituted in 2010, is comprised of Abdiel Acosta, Lu Gold, Jovan Karlo Villalba, Todd Eliott Mansa, Yamel Molerio, Vincent Serritella, José L. Telot, painters who emerged from the New World School of the Arts. They are committed to painting as a living art form, and they exalt craftsmanship, originality of vision, and the power of art to transform our experience of the everyday world. The BAC as one of the most important alternative spaces in Miami’s Wynwood Art District, hosts the group in the Audrey Love Gallery. Water Rites: New Works focuses on the many properties of water which lend themselves to representations of inspiration, transcendence, ecstasy, purification, and rebirth.

All the painters of GUILD have grown up in Miami, the most water-oriented metropolis in the United States, which gives their approaches to water particular poignancy. These innovative painters have reaffirmed their passion for creativity, painting, representation, and ideas—in defiance of contemporary fixations on concept and the reduction of the artist to a socio-political commentator. The artists of GUILD are giving testimony to the validity of their position by exploring, each in his or her way, the power of a single element central to life, mysticism, art, and the life of the imagination.

Water Rites will constitute the first full-scale group exhibition of GUILD. It is the ideal theme upon which to view the group’s diverse work, as water underscores GUILD’s link to the geographical and cultural milieu of South Florida. Lastly, their vivid and original approaches to water highlights GUILD’s sensibility to archetypal images and other attributes of the tradition which continues to nurture the inexhaustible art of painting.
