St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School is hosting the First Annual Alumni 5K Fun Run on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Registration begins at 7 a.m. in the parking lot of the Parish. The race begins at 8 a.m.

The race was the idea of Annie Valls and Alex McDowell, alumni from St. Thomas who are now sophmores at Ransom Everglades High School. Their goal was to get alumni back to St. Thomas and to benefit a cause beyond their alma mater. Ransom is one of five host sites for Breakthrough Miami , an eight-year academic enrichment program that that launches high-potential middle-school students from low-income communities on the path to college and provides talented high-school and college students with teaching internships.
Breakthrough Miami will serve 1,000 4th through 12th grade students across Miami Dade County in 2012.

A committee of St. Thomas alumni who are now in middle and high school at Ransom, Palmer Trinity School and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart – schools that also host Breakthrough sites — are helping to promote the race. Former classmates at other schools around the county are involved as well.

The race will follow a scenic route through neighborhoods surrounding St. Thomas Parish along Red Road, North Kendall Drive and the Snapper Creek areas. Refreshments will be provided after the race and prizes will be awarded for the winners.
