The classic “Madama Butterfly” is Puccini’s story of tradition, romance, yearning, and sacrifice and one of the world’s most beloved operas for over a century.
“Madama Butterfly” is timeless story of an opportunistic American Navy Officer who meets and weds a 15 year old young Geisha, converting her to Christianity and banishing her relatives from their lives. After a brief time the officer leaves Japan for America promising to return “when the robins nest again” – the Geisha gives birth to a child fathered by the American Officer. When he returns three years later with his “American Wife” tragedy envelops the Geisha as she defends her honor – making for an incredible aria and some of the most beloved music in the repertoire of modern Opera.

A Red Curtain Series event, sponsored in part by Friends of Gusman and the Knight Foundation
