Making an Artist’s Life Work
This seminar will review the fundamental skills artists need for developing and sustaining a professional life with an overview of Battenfield’s widely acclaimed book, The Artist’s Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love. It covers tips on how to plan, promote, fund, organize, build community, and includes time to address participant questions.

Promoting Your Work and Building Relationships
This workshop begins with a brief overview of planning and then looks at the tools an artist needs to effectively promote their work to meet their goals. We will discuss communication skills, how to network, and the importance of building long-term relationships. It will include skill-building exercises to build your confidence when introducing your work in a variety of professional situations.*

Fundraising for Individual Artists
This workshop focuses on identifying your needs and how to select the appropriate funding to help you achieve them. It begins with an overview of different funding categories, how to research opportunities, and addresses the basics of writing a grant proposal, budgets, the panel review process, and partnering with a nonprofit. We finish with a discussion on pricing your work and establishing artist fees.*

A popular lecturer on the challenges of sustaining a successful career in the visual arts, Jackie Battenfield is a painter and printmaker who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y. She is the author of The Artist’s Guide: How to Make a Living Doing What You Love published by Da Capo Press in 2009. This comprehensive sourcebook is based on the professional practice classes that Battenfield has taught for more than 18 years in the graduate program at Columbia University, and the Professional Development Program at the Creative Capital Foundation for visual artists.
