TEDxMiami, title sponsored by The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation (Knight), is pleased to announce its upcoming speaker event titled Stories of Resilience being held at the New World Center. The event will feature speakers presenting original and diverse ideas from the fields of science, technology, humanities, business, and personal development.

“Knight is thrilled to continue TEDxMiami’s tradition of showcasing original people and ideas. This year’s event, ‘Stories of Resilience,’ will highlight some of the most important trait’s innovators rely on — curiosity, grit, and ingenuity — to bring big, bold ideas to life,” said Knight’s Miami Director Marta Viciedo.

The seven speakers mentioned in the below event details come from all different backgrounds of expertise ranging from innovation, well-being, business, and self-discovery.

  • Dr. Leila Allen (science), Associate Teaching Professor and Director of Behavioral Neuroscience Undergraduate Program at Florida International University (FIU) – Dr. Allen is the founding Director of the B.S. in Behavioral Neuroscience Degree Program at Florida International University. She has a passion to develop scientific models for translational neuroscience and Alzheimer’s Disease. With her trailblazing work at the Porcine Neuroscience Lab FIU, she hopes to finally gain insights on a disease that defies human resilience.

  • Beena Amanath (tech), AI Visionary & Ethics Leader at Deloitte AI Institute and Founder of Humans for AI – Beena operates at the intersection of giant ideas and delivery of those ideas with impact. She has anchored her entire professional career on being a technology and purpose driven leader charting new paths with artificial intelligence, and data. Her work on AI ethics is helping organizations build responsible tech ecosystems. Her talk will discuss the importance of ethics in the design and development of AI.

  • Daniel Betts, PH.D. (science), CEO & Co-Founder of Blue Frontier (Green AC Innovator) – Daniel’s work has spanned R&D, product development, consulting, and executive management of various startups. With a background in mechanical engineering and a passion for Cleantech, Daniel is working on revolutionizing air-conditioning as we know it. Air conditioning is ubiquitous, and yet has not been the focus of innovation, despite its high energy demands. He will present ideas on how to improve it.

  • Andrew Parker (healthcare), Founder & CEO of Papa – Throughout his career, Andrew has focused on healthcare innovation that brings care to the people. In late 2017, Andrew founded Papa, a platform that brings companionship and support for older adults and families. He started the company to support his own grandfather, his “Papa,” and has since scaled his idea to provide social support nationally. His talk will discuss the economic and societal impact of loneliness.

  • Mike Pell (tech), Envisioneer, Author & Director of Innovation at The Microsoft Garage – Bold, insightful, and uncompromising, Mike is an unapologetic disrupter, having spent over three decades pushing the tech industry’s boundaries well past innovative design and technologies into the realm of true breakthroughs. From Adobe Acrobat to 3D holograms, he has his unique stamp on some of the most utilized tech today. He will present his ideas on how visualization of data can be taken to a new level through the latest advances in tech and data science.

  • Victoria Pelletier (self-development), Passionate Diversity & Inclusion Leader and Founder & CEO of Unstoppable You – Victoria is an influential voice in Women’s and LGBTQ+ communities and a champion for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Characterized by an unyielding drive for excellence and a commitment to shaping growth through authenticity and change, Victoria serves as a global role model. Her talk will share her inspiring story of personal resilience.

  • Scott Shigeoka (humanities), Curiosity Expert, Influencer and Award-winning Author – Scott is a curiosity expert who has popularized research that promotes positive well-being and relationships. His work spans UC Berkeley’s Greater Good Science Center and groundbreaking courses at the University of Texas at Austin. He is also a screenwriter and playwright with keen eye for storytelling. His talk will reveal the crucial role of curiosity for personal and professional success.
