All-you-can-eat boiled shrimp and fixins, open bar (beer and wine) and steel drum music await those who will attend the 3rd Annual “Toes in the Sand Shrimp Boil on the Beach” fundraiser benefiting Angel’s Pediatric Heart House (APHH). This year, the organization will honor a local medical professional – Dr. Frank Scholl, Chief of Pediatric Cardiac Surgery and Surgical Director of Pediatric Cardiac Transplant at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital – and a local pediatric heart family. APHH, a South Florida-based 501(c)(3) organization, is a local nonprofit supporting families affected by congenital heart defects (CHD).

“Congenital heart defects are the number one birth defect in the United States,” said Sonia Perez, founder of APHH. “The ‘Toes in the Sand’ event is a fun-filled way for attendees to relax and have a good time on the beach, while raising funds to help alleviate hardships of the many families affected by CHD.”

APHH provides non-medical financial support for basic human needs during a child’s hospital stay for open heart surgery; an infant items donation program to heart families in need; free Family Fun Days to bring CHD families together in a non-medical, fun environment; ‘Sweet Heart Day’ a customized day of fun activities for heart transplant kids and peer-to-peer support.

‘Toes in the Sand’ is being presented by The Wasie Foundation. Current sponsors include Patriot Risk Management Inc, Publix Supermarkets, Pediatric Critical Care of South Florida, BB&T, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale, Resource Benefits Inc., Publix, Holland & Knight, WFG Insurance, Allied Kitchen & Bath, Michael Gorman, DMD, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Argy, Tropical Attractions, Duree & Company, Inc., Michael Designs, Pollack Photography, Keyphotography, The Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale and Artemis Design Group. Mel DiPietro of Resource Benefits Inc. is the event’s Honorary Chair. Tickets are $30 per person (advance ticket sales only – tickets are $50 at door); sponsorship opportunities are available for $300 and $750, and $5000.

Angel’s Pediatric Heart House, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was created by Sonia Perez, wife of the late Dr. Angel R. Perez, a South Florida pediatric cardiologist, in February 2004.
