MAPP (Mentorship, Advocacy, Purpose and the Power of women) is the non-
profit organization dedicated to empowering women in the culinary and
hospitality industry. On Tuesday, April 2 the organization will return to Miami for
the red carpet premiere of filmmaker Joanna James’ exploration and celebration
of women in the culinary industry in the award-winning film, A Fine Line. Taking
place at Miami Beach’s Regal Cinema, the event will be part of a day-long series
of events focused on creating a culture of self-worth and respect for women in or
looking to build a life in the restaurant industry.

The film premiere itself will take place at 7:30PM, followed by an all-star panel
discussion featuring local and national female culinary stars including Dominique
Crenn, who stars in the film and is the only three Michelin star female chef in the
U.S. Joining her will be chefs Eileen Andrade, Lorena Garcia, Karla Hoyos,
Dayanny De La Cruz, Suzanne Baer and Karina Rivera. Tickets for the film and
panel are $30 per person.

For those looking to expand their opportunity to learn and further engage with
MAPP, there will be a mini-conference earlier that day, starting at 3:30PM at
Santorini by Georgios. Industry leaders will delve into the theme of “Creating a
Culture of Respect,” featuring rotating workshops and discussions on self-worth
including financial independence, so female professionals feel their voices are
heard. There will be an appetizer, wine and cocktail reception for attendees to
meet each other while also having the opportunity to speak with their industry
heroes leading panel conversations.

In addition to being the CEO and founder of MAPP, James is the director and
producer of the award-winning film that had its national broadcast premiere on
PBS, A Fine Line. The film became a rallying call for greater gender equality in
professional kitchens and the building blocks to what MAPP is today.
The April 2nd event will be its official cinematic release in Miami.

“It’s full circle not only bringing the film I made on creating gender equality in the
hospitality industry to Miami, the hub of nightlife and epic restaurants, but also
the non-profit born from it MAPP, hosting its annual conference here,” said
James. This time women will get to see themselves and our universal stories on
the big screen to ask ourselves how we can shape a future where respect,
equality and empowerment thrive.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit the 501c3 non-profit MAPP, dedicated to
empowering women into leadership roles. This even was made possible by our
sponsors: PepsiCo, Delta Air Lines, Dough Wines, Markham Napa Valley
Vineyards.

Deseo, an original Flamenco work, inspired by Tennessee Williams’ Streetcar Named Desire, uses Flamenco music and dance as a language to tell the iconic story of one of the most critically acclaimed American plays of the 20th Century. With some of the most engaging characters in American Theatre, Tennessee Williams’ sensuous and emotional work centers around troubled former schoolteacher Blanche DuBois, who leaves small-town Mississippi and moves in with her sister, Stella Kowalski, and her husband, Stanley, in New Orleans. Blanche’s flirtatious Southern-belle presence causes problems for Stella and Stanley, who already have a volatile relationship. This sets the stage for intense drama, as each of the characters fights his or her demons and struggles to escape the world around them, in a violent storm of frustrated dreams, poetry, love, passion, illusion and cruelty.

Orchestra Miami to Perform Carnival of the Animals at Zoo Miami 2/25/24

Orchestra Miami to Perform Carnival of the Animals at Zoo Miami

Zoo Miami

Miami, Florida, 33177

Cost: Free with zoo admission

A celebration that’s 40+ years in the making takes flight at Zoo Miami on Sunday, February 25 with Orchestra Miami’s performance of Camille Saint-Saëns’s 1886 suite, Le Carnaval des Animaux (Carnival of Animals). For Elaine Rinaldi, Orchestra Miami’s artistic director, this performance is deeply personal.

In 1982, at the age of 14, Elaine Rinaldi made her soloist debut as a pianist with the Ft. Lauderdale Chamber Orchestra performing Carnival of Animals at what was then the newly opened Miami Metro Zoo. Even at that young age, Elaine knew that she wanted to recreate that event and allow other promising young artists to perform locally with a professional orchestra. Forty-two years later, her dream becomes a reality. “This concert is a full circle moment for me, and it’s perfect for Orchestra Miami’s ‘Discover Miami Through Music’ series, which I started in 2014. You can’t perform this suite without duo pianists, so I’m especially pleased to be giving two young piano soloists the rare opportunity to perform with a professional orchestra,” said Rinaldi.

Orchestra Miami will offer two performances of the humorous musical suite of fourteen movements, each representing an animal. They are honored to have Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava narrating the 11 AM performance while Conservationist, Ron Magill, will narrate the 1 PM performance. Maestro Rinaldi will be conducting the performances, and the piano soloists are Elisabeth Thomashoff originally from Vienna, Austria, and Aneliya Novikova originally from Voronezh, Russia; both 21 or younger and still students at the Lynn Conservatory of Music. Running approximately 45 minutes each, both shows are free to the public with the purchase of a Zoo Miami ticket. Before this performance, a special free “preview” performance will take place at the Coral Gables Museum on Family Day on Aragon, Saturday, February 10 at 1 PM.

“I’m excited to be a part of Orchestra Miami’s Carnival of Animals. It is certainly one of Camille Saint Sans’ most beautiful works. From the first note to the last, it’s got everything — excitement, eccentric ideas, and instrumentation that competes with playfulness, elegance, and science. This musical suite and Zoo Miami is the perfect marriage,” said Ron Magill. The animals depicted in Carnival of the Animals are lions, hens/roosters, tortoises, elephants, and kangaroos, to name a few. It will also feature The Swan, one of the most famous and recognizable pieces in all of music history. This performance will also include Ottorino Respighi’s The Birds, which is based on music from the 17th and 18th centuries and represents an attempt to transcribe birdsong into musical notation, illustrating bird actions, such as fluttering wings, or scratching feet.

“Saint-Saëns wrote this suite for fun in February 1886 and then prohibited anyone from listening to it until 1922. 102 years later, this is still one of his most enduring and fun compositions. What better way to enjoy this whimsical piece about animals than among the animals,” said Rinaldi.

This Month’s Moon:

Join us under November’s Full Beaver Moon. This month’s moon is also known as the Frost Moon, as beavers build their winter dams by the light of the moon. In order to feel warm, safe and secure, beings must illuminate the things that are in darkness.

This month’s Full Moon will see a lunar eclipse, when the Earth moves between the sun and moon. This happens every six months, which gives us the perfect opportunity to set our intentions for the next six-months, as well as reflect on the previous.

The Beaver’s Moon comes to us in the sign of Taurus. Taurus, an Earth sign, has the ability to see things from a grounded, practical and realistic perspective.

Attendees can determine where they are at with their goals, what they want to gather more of, and what they are ready to let go of to prepare for the new moon cycle. Tune in using sound off noise cancelling headphones, focusing on the experience occurring solely in the body, powered by meaningful beats & sounds. To close the experience guests are invited to connect with one another while sipping on curated full moon elixirs.

Ticket includes:

Sunset Meditation & breath-work
Immersive sound bath
Mindful movement
Take home mantra card
Individual essential oil
Closing elixir
All experiences are outdoors at the 1 Beach Club. Please ensure you dress appropriately. Limited spots are available. The Full Moon experience begins promptly at 7pm. Check-in will take place on 24th street main entrance of Beach Club. In an effort to honor the space, entry to the event will not be allowed once the experience has started.

Conversations at MOCA: Kelly Breez + Autumn Casey 10/22/20

Conversations at MOCA: Kelly Breez + Autumn Casey
Thursday, 10/22/2020-, 07:00 pm-
Website
Cost: Free

The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) is pleased to feature two South Florida artists – Autumn Casey and Kelly Breez – as part of its free, virtual “Conversations at MOCA” series on Oct. 22. The artists will be discussing stories their past, current and future work with MOCA North Miami’s Exhibitions and Project Manager Kevin Arrow.

The speakers include:

Kelly Breez is a multidisciplinary artist whose work chronicles the perfectly unholy attitude and landscape of South Florida, where the characters she grew up with left the decorum and prohibitions of elitist culture in the dust. She works in – and combines – illustration, sculpture, tufting, painting, and installation. She is currently in her second year as an Ambassador for the Vans Custom Culture program, and she recently completed a five-week residency at Anderson Ranch in Snowmass, Colorado. Her work has been shown during Miami Art Week at NADA Art Fair, The Faena Forum and the Juxtapoz Clubhouse. She has a permanent installation at Facebook’s Miami offices, as part of their Artist in Residency Program. She is represented by Primary Projects in Miami, where her latest solo show, “Any Major Dude Will Tell You,” opened in October 2020. Breez holds a BFA from New World School of the Arts.

Autumn Casey draws on the ambiguity of personal memory and pop-cultural ephemera, to challenge and question her subjectivity against the world at large. Her practice, which moves from sculpture to collage, as well as video and performance, considers the history of the found object and assemblage – redeploying existing materials or moments in unexpected, idiosyncratic ways. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the New World School of the Arts, Miami, FL. She is represented by Primary (Miami) where she has had two solo exhibitions, and was selected to have a solo booth at Art Wynwood in 2015. Her work has also been included ingroup exhibitions at The Pérez Art Museum Miami, FL; The Museum of Contemporary Art, Miami, FL; Vox Populi, Philadelphia, PA; the Anne Bryan Gallery, Philadelphia, PA, among others. Her work is collected by the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, The Pérez Art Museum Miami and in private collections in Miami and New York City.

On March 24 at 7:00 p.m., MOCA will host “Conversations at MOCA: Electric Tree with Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier,” virtually via Zoom. During the event, artists Mark Handforth and Adler Guerrier will speak about their art practice in the public realm. As artists who recently accomplished public art projects in North Miami, they will discuss their method of bringing a public art project to life. The conversation will take us through all the major steps of the process, from conceptual ideas to development and to working with curators, museums, and governmental agencies. Moderated by Dehja Carrington, she will drive the artists elaborate about their past, present, future projects and their process.

In addition to the conversation, MOCA will premiere Making of the Electric Tree, a short documentary produced by MOCA. The documentary highlights Mark Handforth’s journey to bring the Electric Tree public art project to north Miami.

Mark Handforth was born in Hong Kong in 1969 and grew up in England. He lives and works in Miami. Based in Miami for over 20 years, Mark Handforth is profoundly tied to the legacy of the 20th-century American avant-garde. He freely makes use of a formal vocabulary borrowed from Ready-Made, Minimalist, or Pop Art, which he confronts with an iconography often derived from the urban environment. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Art in Frankfurt and the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He is internationally acclaimed for his installations in the public spaces. His large-scale sculptures have been displayed in Central Park in New York, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the MCA in Chicago, and during the FIAC offsite event in Paris.
