The producers of Friday Night Sound Waves are giving guests six more opportunities to check #41 off author Christiana Lilly’s “100 Things to Do in Fort Lauderdale Before You Die” list, with a spring revival of the popular free concert series at The LOOP (Las Olas Oceanside Park), April 21 through May 26 from 6:30–9:30 p.m.
Presented by the City of Fort Lauderdale’s Beach Business Improvement District, Friday Night Sound Waves welcomes locals and visitors, the young and the young at heart, to enjoy some of South Florida’s best musical talents, performing an eclectic range of genres ranging from Classic Rock to Latin Jazz, and Top 40 to Tribute Bands. Attendees are invited to come early to enjoy various pre-concert games on the main lawn starting at 5 p.m., along with local artisan vendors and a rotation of food and drink vendors to sip, sup and shop before, during and after the show.
The LOOP will also host special performances throughout the month of April on select Saturday and Sunday afternoons in recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month in coordination with the weekend Markets. It will also host two concerts by the Navy Rock Band on Sunday, April 23, from 5–6 p.m. and Saturday, April 29, from 4–5:30 p.m during Fleet Week Fort Lauderdale.

The Pure Heart band hails from South Florida and features six seasoned professionals performing the timeless classics of the band Heart, led by Hall of Fame artists and sisters Ann Wilson and Nancy Wilson. The band tributes its success to the music and powerful hits of Heart that spans generations. The music is played and sung authentically, in true homage to Heart. Songs include “Barracuda,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Alone,” “These Dreams,” “Magic Man,” “Love Alive,” “Crazy On You” and more. Additionally, Pure Hearts adds some of the favorites Heart chose to remake, including “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin and “Love, Reign O’er Me” by The Who.
Formed in 2002, Mr. Nice Guy (MNG) is one of the area’s most popular classic rock groups, delivering high-energy performances of some of the best music from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s. Joe’s Stone Crab in Miami Beach will once again host Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s 13th Annual “Claws for Kids” in memory of Judy Kramer on Tuesday, May 7. The event will kick off with a cocktail reception at 11 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Guests will enjoy delicious stone crabs and Joe’s other signature items without the wait. The fundraising lunch is one of the last chances to enjoy stone crabs before stone crab season ends.
Mother and daughter duo, Lisa Mendelson and Lindsey Mendelson Pearson, are co-chairing this year’s event once again. Olga Guilarte is the Special Event Chair.
“Claws for Kids” is held in memory of Judy Kramer, a longtime Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade Board member, who helped create the event and chaired it since its inception until her passing in 2021.
Proceeds will benefit Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade’s crucial programs and services at its six Clubs and sites combined including its educational after school programs, tutoring and homework assistance, STEM, recreation, dance, arts and crafts, mentoring and summer and athletic programs. These programs help children realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens.

During the event, Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson will be awarded the 2023 “From the Heart Award.” Through her unwavering dedication and caring stewardship to Boys & Girls Clubs of Miami-Dade, Congresswoman Wilson has made a positive impact on the lives of the Clubs’ youth members. Museum of Graffiti announces the opening of a novel exhibition presenting art works created with air pollution. The exhibit, entitled Reduce, Reuse, Remix: Graffiti Art for a Better Earth will open on Earth Day, April 22, 2023, and will exclusively present studio pieces of local artists who were seeded AIR-INK writing utensils.

The Museum of Graffiti is proud to announce the opening of an eco-friendly exhibition presenting art works created with recycled air pollution particles to promote sustainability. The exhibit, entitled Reduce, Reuse, Remix: Graffiti Art for a Better Earth will open on Earth Day, April 22, 2023, and will exclusively present studio pieces of local artists who were seeded AIR-INK writing utensils. AIR-INK technology starts by attaching filters to exhaust pipes on cars, generators, etc. to capture air pollution before it hits the environment. The sequestered soot then goes through a purification process and is converted into ink. The result is that PM 2.5 and PM 10 emissions which would have otherwise been in the lungs of millions of people will now be resting beautifully as art at the Museum of Graffiti. Viewers of the show can expect to see reclaimed found objects in addition to the AIR-INK in some of the pieces.
All participating artists, were gifted the AIR-INK materials to use by Rabble Wine Company, which takes a planet-first mentality in its work by reducing water usage, decreasing pesticides, protecting natural vineyard ecosystems, reducing carbon emissions, and working with, rather than against, Mother Nature. Artists include Miami locals Ahold Sniffs Glue, Abstrk, Krave, Nico, Sero, Gustavo Oviedo, and more.

Compassion! – Terrence McNally’s most honored and celebrated play about eight gay friends who spend the holidays over one summer at one’s beautiful hundred-year-old house in upstate New York, kicks off Island City Stage’s 12th thrilling season. The show runs from October 12 – November 5.
At a lakeside summer vacation house in Dutchess County, two hours north of New York City, eight gay friends spend the three major holiday weekends of one summer together for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. The house belongs to Gregory, a successful Broadway choreographer now approaching middle age, who fears he is losing his creativity; and his twenty-something lover, Bobby, a legal assistant who is blind. Each of the guests at their house is connected to Gregory’s work in one way or another – Arthur and longtime partner Perry are business consultants; John Jeckyll, a sour Englishman, is a dance accompanist; die-hard musical theater fanatic Buzz Hauser is a costume designer and the most stereotypically gay man in the group. Only John’s summer lover, Ramon, and John’s twin brother James are outside the circle of friends. But Ramon is outgoing and eventually makes a place for himself in the group, and James is such a gentle soul that he is quickly welcomed.
Florida-born Terrence McNally is considered one of the most prolific and highly lauded playwrights, librettists and screenwriters in the last 50 years. His decades of works explored human relationships – frequently those of gay men. In addition to Love! Valour! Compassion!, McNally’s works include Bad Habits, The Ritz, Frankie and Johnny in the Claire de Lune, Masterclass, and Mothers and Sons, among many others. McNally’s librettos for Kiss of the Spider Woman and Ragtime won him Tony Awards in 1993 and 1998, respectively. Additional credits as a librettist included The Full Monty, Catch Me if You Can, and The Visit. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1996, and he also received the Dramatists Guild Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011. In 2018, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the highest recognition of artistic merit in the United States. In 2019, he won a Lifetime Achievement Tony award. His other accolades included an Emmy Award, two Guggenheim Fellowships, a Rockefeller Grant, four Drama Desk Awards, two Lucille Lortel Awards, two Obie Awards, and three Hull-Warriner Awards.

Thousands of walkers and runners will make strides in the ongoing fight against drunk driving during the 11th Annual UKG Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale 5K brought to you by the Sheriff’s Foundation of Broward County. Runners and walkers will participate in the in-person race on Sunday, April 24 at Huizenga Plaza in Fort Lauderdale. The organization will also provide a virtual participation option and continue to monitor the evolving impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The day’s festivities will also include children’s activities, an awards ceremony, live musical performances and vendor/educational booths. The event will be attended by dignitaries including Walk Like MADD Fort Lauderdale Founder and Honorary Chairperson Heather Geronemus, Volunteer Chairperson Colonel Nichole Anderson, Undersheriff of Broward Sheriff’s Office and Major Robert Chandler of Florida Highway Patrol.
Walk Like MADD & MADD Dash Fort Lauderdale is a community-driven 5K that raises awareness about drunk driving and underage drinking and unites community members around MADD’s mission. Since it was established in 2011, this event has raised over $3 million that stays in our community to save lives and support victims of drunk driving, making it the most successful grassroots fundraiser in the history of Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Every dollar donated remains in South Florida to provide victim services and prevention education at no cost.
“Every 48 minutes, someone is killed by a drunk driver. With this event, we are raising both awareness and funds to eliminate drunk and drugged driving and provide free victim services and prevention education in South Florida,” said Heather Geronemus, who is also MADD national chairwoman. Her late father, Dr. Robert Perry Geronemus, was struck and killed by a drunk driver in 2009.
“Despite the decrease in miles traveled during the pandemic, traffic fatalities continue to increase, and drunk driving is still the deadliest killer on our nation’s roadways, claiming more than 11,000 lives and injuring more than 350,000 innocent people each year. Thanks to the support from our sponsors, participants, and donors, we continue to work toward a future of no more victims,” said Broward Sheriff’s Office Colonel Nichole Anderson, Undersheriff.

Join us as we welcome Lisette and her special guest, Lupita Vázquez Reyes, who will be on location from a community garden in Immokalee to remind us of the many ways we can honor the Earth in everyday life.
