Satellite Beach Blues takes place along the Space Coast of Florida in an unspecified moment in the very near future: a transgender woman living in a cheap hotel on Florida’s Space Coast observes life in the state from the very shores where rising seas are slowly inundating the state. For this appearance at MOCA, Erica Dawn Lyle will be performing an experimental lecture in which she will read from the novel while edited sequences and soundscapes from the film-in-progress play on the big screen behind, offering a dreamlike consideration of gender transition, Florida’s legacies of colonization and real estate speculation, and the magical realist possibilities of transcendence beyond capitalism through queer lived experience. In response to the slow motion environmental collapse of Lyle’s native Florida, collaborator, Midnight Piper Forman, and Lyle (working together collectively under the name, SOBBETH) have for the past three years undertaken an ongoing multi-part exploration of the ruins of the Sunshine State’s post-war 20th century mythology.

South Florida native, Erica Dawn Lyle, is a writer, musician, and curator who lives in New York City. She is the author of On The Lower Frequencies: A Secret History of The City (Soft Skull, 2008), and her writing has appeared in Art in America, Artforum, Frieze, and on NPR’s This American Life. Since 1991, she has edited and self-published the DIY art/crime/punk magazine, SCAM. Her most recent book is Streetopia (Brooklyn, 2015). Currently she plays guitar in the bands, Bikini Kill and AquaShade.

Friday October 18 at 8 PM: Get ready for a very special show at Arts Garage! Jose Fajardo, Jr.’s father, Jose Fajardo, would have been 100 on this day. This show will celebrate the Charanga Flute master who was well known during the Palladium days! Jose Fajardo, Jr. began at the age of 3 with his father playing percussion and since then has performed alongside and/or has recorded with some of the best and iconic Latin artists and musicians of all time, including Jose Fajardo, Sr, The Fania All-Stars, Johnny Pacheco, Larry Harlow, Orchestra Broadway, Azuquita, Alfredo De La Fe, Tipica 73, Oscar D’Leon, Jose Alberto (El Canario), La Sonora Matancera, Johnny Ray, Grupo Imagen, Luisito Carrion, Pedro Jesus, Cano Estremera, Edgar Joel, Johnny Almendra, Tito Puente, Sheila E., Nino Segarra, Cachao, and many others.

After the untimely death of his father in 2001, Jose Fajardo, Jr. has been the director of the orchestra created by his father in 1949 and has changed the traditional sound of charanga music to a larger salsa sound for all generations. In 2006 he was signed and is still endorsed by the leading manufacturer of percussion instruments, “Latin percussion,” a division of KMC Music. His single, “El Swing of New York” released in 2011, was No. 1 for “Salsa Magazine” play list for 4 consecutive weeks.

In 2014 he launched his new single, “Yo Estoy Desengañado” (Salsa Version) originally recorded as a ballad by the world-famous Cuban singer Orlando Contreras. This track was launched as one of the songs on his upcoming CD release “Mis Recuerdos”. In May of 2015 once again Fajardo released another single “No Tiene Rival” that has been a dancer’s delight. Recently he has been on a tour throughout cities in the United States to teach local students Latin American rhythms and culture.

During the month of October, donate an art supply to support students at Carver Middle School (https://artsgarage.org/heartfelt/) or make a $10 donation for the program and receive a FREE DRINK at our bar! The Advisory Services panel is being conducted in conjunction with the 10-Minute Walk Campaign, a national movement striving to ensure that residents of urban neighborhoods throughout America have access to a high-quality park within a ten-minute walk from their homes. What criteria is necessary for the acquisition and development of new park space downtown, along with a strategic decision-making process;
Identifying outreach strategies and partnerships to help gain strong public support for changes and improvements to existing park space; and
How the public and private sector can work together to explain the benefits for property owners and developers to participate in a public parks program.

Miami, Florida 33132

MOAD MDC will present Alternative Facts, an interactive public performance by Paul Ramírez Jonas that explores the concept that truth is a social contract. Over the course of two days in two different parts of the city, the artist will engage individual members of the public in a series of actions that call into question commonly understood ideas about facts, authority, exchange, value, and trust.

For Alternative Facts, Ramírez Jonas will set up notary stations in public locations. For several hours each day, he will invite passersby to participate in a simple exchange in which they sit at the table and make an untruthful statement. Through a brief but elaborate process, the artist will notarize each statement as a testament to its truthfulness. The participants are then asked to pay for the service with a gold coin, which is made by the artist electroplating their spare change in a gold solution. The exchange results in two drawings: one for the participant to keep and another to be displayed near the notary station.

Terence Blanchard and the E-Collective collaborate with choreographer Rennie Harris’ company, Puremovement, and sculptor/projection mapping artist Andrew Scott to create Caravan: A Revolution on the Road, a new work expanding on themes explored on the first E-Collective recording and tour.

These artists have created a multi-disciplinary performance that transcends racial and social boundaries and breathe new artistic life into conversations on personal and collective identity in relation to social and political structures. Following the release of Breathless, an elegy for Eric Garner, Blanchard expressed that ‘we’ve been having dialogues for far too long with no actions, no change.’ The forceful, yet inclusive energy of this new project encourages the audience to make yet another step toward positive social change.
