12th Edition Of OUTshine LGBTQ+ Virtual Film Festival Fort Lauderdale 12/3/20,12/4/20,12/5/20,12/6/20

12th Edition Of OUTshine LGBTQ+ Virtual Film Festival Fort Lauderdale
Thursday, 12/03/2020-12/06/2020, 08:00 am-11:30 pm
Website
Cost: Prices for individual films are $7.50 each and value packages range from $37.50 to $100.

The 12th edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! Building upon the success of its Miami-based virtual film festival held online earlier this year, the Fort Lauderdale edition, presented by Gilead Sciences and Broward County, will showcase 21 world-class contemplative, comedic and creative films from 11 countries, (several making their US debuts during the streaming festival). All of the films will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from December 3 – 6, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines and community safety, this year’s festival will feature the OUTshine Drive-OUT film Cowboys (USA), a critically acclaimed drama, on Thursday, December 4, at 7 p.m. at Pier 66 Marina (2150 SE 17th Street in Fort Lauderdale). Awarded “Outstanding Performance in a U.S. Feature” at Outfest LGBT Film Festival and “Best Screenplay” at the TriBeCa Film Festival, Cowboys stars Steve Zahn (Treme’, Modern Family, Dallas Buyers Club) as Troy, a father who tries to liberate his young transgender son by taking him to Canada, but as a frustrated female detective spearheads an investigation, she discovers that the child’s family situation is more complicated than she thought. Director Anna Kerrigan has created a powerful story that propels this modern-day western forward with an uncommon emotional veracity.

Another event of note in this year’s line-up is the Saturday, December 5, 7 p.m. free community 10th anniversary screening of BearCity (USA), an outrageous, hilarious and authentic touching portrait of a group of friends trying to get by via laughing, loving and sex-ing in New York City. A virtual cast reunion and interactive Q & A will follow the film. Other highlights include the US premiere of the romantic drama Walking with Shadows (Nigeria), the award-winning international comedy-drama Goodbye Mother (Thưa mẹ con đi) (Vietnam), the award-winning international drama No Hard Feelings (Germany) and the feature thriller Through A Glass Darkly (USA). A virtual closing awards ceremony will take place on Sunday, December 6, at 8 p.m. via Zoom.

A full list of films and descriptions can be found at outshinefilm.com.

No Place Like Home welcomes back three comedians who got their start here in Miami but have moved on to bigger and better, doing amazing things in other cities. We’re clicking our ruby slippers three times and bringing them home for the holidays so that you can see how they’ve evolved in their time away.

For the first edition we have comedians coming down from New York, each one having their own special relationship with their hometown Miami. Our headliner Plus Pierre has toured internationally, performing solo as well as part of a group show “Coming Through America.” Our two features. Irene Morales and Paul Julmeus have hosted their own rooms in NY as well as Miami, and worked on a variety of TV, Film, and online projects since leaving home.

We can’t forget our ride or die Miamians who still live down here, so we’re bringing out local staples Julie Baez (who recently opened for Tiffany Haddish) and Reginald Desjardins (host of a number of beloved local theme shows) to open up the show, along with “305 till he mother-lovin’ dies” Danny “Miami” Reyes as host.

Come out to relive the glory days, or to discover some amazing talent that was born and/or bred in our own back yard, spreadin’ that Miami swagger all across the globe for us!

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Kicks-off Awareness Raising Campaign in Palm Beach

Royal Park Bridge Lights Up Yellow for the Race of Hope
Shining Light on The Importance of Mental Health in 2020

February 4 – 15, 2020

(Palm Beach, FL – January 22, 2020) – Palm Beach’s iconic Royal Park Bridge will light up in sunshine yellow on Tuesday, February 4 to kick off the Hope for Depression Research Foundation’s (HDRF) Annual Race of Hope to Defeat Depression and declare a town-wide campaign to raise awareness about mental health.

The bridge lights, underwritten by Addison Hines Charitable Trust, will stay lit in HDRF’s signature yellow for the entire month of February.

HDRF’s Race of Hope, the centerpiece of the campaign, is a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, February 15 at 8 am at The Royal Poinciana Plaza. HDRF Founding Chair Audrey Gruss and Board member Scott Snyder, both Palm Beach residents, are Grand Marshals for the annual event which is now in its second year. With hundreds registered from Palm Beach and beyond, the Race unites the community in an active day of health to speak out about depression and raise funds for critical research.

“Depression is the Number One cause of suicide and disability worldwide,” said Audrey Gruss, “and our vow in the next decade is to find new treatments that will finally bring this complex illness under control.”

Gruss added: “The support we receive in Palm Beach for the work we do affirms our commitment to defeating this debilitating illness that affects each and every one of us, either directly or indirectly.”

What is HDRF, and a quick overview of their work/achievements in the past decade:

· HDRF is the leading non-profit dedicated solely to advanced depression research.
· Audrey Gruss founded the organization in 2006 in memory of her mother, Hope, who struggled with depression.
· The mission of HDRF is to fund cutting-edge neuroscience research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment and prevention of depression and other related mood disorders.
· In 2010, HDRF launched its Depression Task Force – a collaboration of nine leading scientists, at the frontiers of brain science, from different research institutions across the U.S. and Canada. To accelerate breakthrough research, they share ongoing results, in real-time, at the HDRF Data Center.
· HDRF has invested over 30 million dollars in advanced depression research to date.

Hope for Depression Research Foundation Kicks-off Awareness Raising Campaign in Palm Beach

Royal Park Bridge Lights Up Yellow for the Race of Hope
Shining Light on The Importance of Mental Health in 2020

February 4 – 15, 2020

The Hope for Depression Research Foundation is the country’s leading non-profit organization dedicated solely to fighting depression through research and education. Now in its 14th year, HDRF launched the Race of Hope in Palm Beach in 2019, expanding the event from Southampton, NY, where the Race first started in 2016. Last year the Race of Hope in Palm Beach raised over $300,000 for life-saving research.

Just after the bridge lighting and in the run-up to the Race, The Royal Poinciana Plaza will kick off the Week of Hope on Wednesday, February 5. Many storefronts at The Royal Poinciana Plaza will place a two-foot-wide, environmentally friendly and re-usable, yellow statement balloon at their front doors and hand out informational flyers about depression.

Over in the Worth Avenue shopping district, other stores along Via Bice will also display balloons and support HDRF’s mission with a percentage of sales during a Day of Hope on Wednesday, February 12.
“The bridge and the bright balloons represent a commitment to change the staggering statistics around depression,” said Audrey Gruss.

“The Royal Poinciana Plaza is thrilled to participate in this event for the second year in a row,” added Alexandra Patterson, Senior Director of Development and Interim General Manager of The Royal Poinciana Plaza. “The HOPE yellow balloons make a visual impact that will spark thousands of life-saving conversations and we are grateful to have the opportunity to support such an important cause.”

Here is a recap of the events launching the Race of Hope in Palm Beach:

· Tuesday, February 4: Bridge Lighting at sunset in HDRF signature sunshine yellow
· Wednesday, February 5: Week of Hope kicks off at The Royal Poinciana Plaza with visually-arresting HOPE balloons (environmentally friendly and re-usable).
· Wednesday, February 12, from 10am to 8pm, Worth Avenue’s Via Bice will host a shop and sip Day of Hope with music and refreshments and all stores donating a percentage of sales back to Hope for Depression Research Foundation. The day caps off with cocktails at Bice restaurant (313 Worth Ave, Palm Beach, FL 33480) starting at 5 pm.
· Thursday, February 13, Audrey Gruss and Frances Valentine are hosting an invitation-only luncheon at the Frances Valentine flagship store on Worth Avenue’s Via Bice.
· Saturday, February 15, the final day of the Week of Hope, Audrey Gruss and Palm Beach resident and HDRF Board member Scott Snyder, Race Grand Marshals, will lead the Second Annual Palm Beach 5K Race of Hope along the North trail and through the scenic streets of Palm Beach at 8am. Participants have registered from all over South Florida to unite as a community and raise awareness and funds to defeat depression. All participants will receive a finisher hat, short sleeve tech shirt, lightweight jacket and a finisher medal. 100% of proceeds from the Race will fund groundbreaking research into the root causes of depression in the brain and new and better treatments. Supporters who cannot travel to the race are encouraged to have their own “virtual race” in their hometown for $29. To sign up or learn more, please visit raceofhopeseries.org.

Join us on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 from 4pm – 8pm as we witness the highly-anticipated launch of the Shantall Lacayo, Fall 2019 Collection in Miami!
Fresh off of the runway of New York Fashion Week 2019, Shantall’s “Tropical Fall” Collection is heavily influenced by the plastic arts, an art form “involving the representation of solid objects with three-dimensional effects.” She also takes inspiration from the most important creative masterminds of all time to inform her own prints: the Spanish painter Pablo Picasso, the architect Le Corbusier and the Italian painter Giacomo Balla.
For this season she plays with organic and geometric silhouettes in a beautiful collection that offers many multi-functional pieces. Pieces can be worn together or with other basic wardrobe staples to add a bit of avant-garde to every day attire. This “Tropical Fall” collection is definitely a must have for the contemporary woman.

About Michelle DiMarco
Michelle DiMarco had no idea she wanted to be an entrepreneur.
After college, DiMarco struggled finding a career that she was madly
passionate about. She sought refuge in keeping up on the latest trends
in fashion magazines and designer blogs, while styling her friends for fun.
Her muses ranged from Bridget Bardot to Diane Kruger and Carine
Roitfeld. When a retail space opened up near her home in Florida, her mom encouraged her to take a leap of (fashionable) faith. She listened closely
to her heart which encouraged her to create the Lilac And Lilies Boutique.

Michelle DiMarco, born in New Port Richey, Florida and raised by a single
mother from Cuba, learned from an early age the importance of her roots,
heritage and culture, yet to cultivate an independent spirit to evolve
and successfully follow her dreams. DiMarco graduated from Florida
Atlantic University in Boca Raton with a degree in Intercultural
Communications. During college, she pursued her passion for travel
while spending three months in Ghana, Africa for an exclusive study
abroad program. Thereafter, she continued to be inspired by exploring
new places which led her to New York City to attend The Fashion Institute
of Technology where she studied Creative Enterprise Ownership. Over
the last ten years, DiMarco has grown the brand into a shopping
destination for high quality, on-trend and affordable finds for Florida’s
fashionistas and beyond with a corresponding e-shop.

Throughout her career as an entrepreneur, DiMarco has been able to
give back in many ways as a devoted volunteer and advocate for
philanthropy. She has been nominated as one of the 100 Outstanding
Women of Broward County for three years in a row, benefitting The
Boys and Girls Club. She is active on the board of The Humane Society
of Broward County, and regularly volunteers for Kids in Distress. DiMarco
is also a recipient of The Glammy Award for her community activism
benefitting breast cancer research. DiMarco has been featured in WWD,
New York Post, Forbes, CBS, NBC, Sun Sentinel, Boca Life, the Miami
Herald and more.

DiMarco currently lives in Fort Lauderdale with her King Charles
Cavalier puppy, Lily. She enjoys living a healthy lifestyle of mind, body
and spirit – which makes DiMarco the successful, well- rounded
businesswoman that she is today.

The Koubek Center

Miami, Florida 33135

Cost: $20 advance / $25 day-of / $10 MDC Students

The “Voice of Venezuela” brings her powerhouse vocals, spirit-shaking percussion and pointed lyrics to Little Havana as Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Koubek Center presents Little Havana Social Club: Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo at 8 p.m., Saturday, April 21.

Machado hails from a small village near Venezuela’s coast called El Clavo, where most of its 1,500 inhabitants are descendants of slaves who worked on the region’s cacao plantations. For generations, they’ve preserved aspects of African tradition and developed a uniquely Afro-Venezuelan heritage–particularly in their music, which includes intricate African polyrhythms and percussion, call-and-response singing and close harmonies.

Her band–which includes three cocoa farming brothers, a mother and son team and Machado’s sister–has played together for nearly three decades. They are masters of parranda, a style of community music born in joyous celebrations where musicians strolled through town, commenting on daily life (parranda is also a term for “party”). The music they create preserves the tambor genre, said to make dancers float.

“When Betsayda Machado y Parranda El Clavo begin to sing, their layered harmonies and richly textured percussion are so vibrant, they swirl around your heart, soul and body so joyfully, it’s impossible to do anything but surrender and dance along.” -NPR

While the group has performed primarily at village ceremonies and celebrations, they recently made waves with debut appearances in North America–even catching the attention of the New York Times, which wrote: “The kind of group that world-music fans have always been thrilled to discover: vital, accomplished, local, unplugged, deeply rooted.”

The evening will include a complimentary pre-concert dance lesson, DJ’ed sets by Mr. Pauer, specialty food and cocktails for purchase, and more.

The Little Havana Social Club is a series dedicated to celebrating Latin American heritage through music and dance. The concerts/ dance parties promote community and engagement–from the dance floor to the domino tables. Each event features vibrant live bands, dance instruction, and vendors, all situated in the lush gardens of the historic Koubek Center mansion.

The girls first meet a small Totoro that leads them into the thicket of magical creatures that include the titular Totoro himself and a ride on the Cat Bus. The sweetly poetic fairy tale Ponyo, Hayao Miyazaki’s ninth animated feature film, is a delightful spin on Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid. Ponyo is a magical and visually enthralling children’s story, a joy for all ages, and marks another milestone in Miyazaki’s career. Perfect for audiences of all ages, it centers on the friendship between five-year-old Sosuke and a magical goldfish named Ponyo, the young daughter of a sorcerer father and a sea-goddess mother. After a chance encounter, Ponyo yearns to become a human so she can be with Sosuke. As to be expected with Miyazaki, the film is awash in pure unbridled imagination and visual wonder — but it is the tender love, humor, and devotion exhibited by Ponyo and Sosuke that form the emotional heart of the film.

#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – A Reflection On Our Personal Style

Thank-You-Miami-For-Fashion-Personal-Style-Reflection-Overalls-Mom-1

We have been reflecting a lot lately. Maybe it’s common for our age or maybe we’re going crazy – nevertheless, these days, our brain has been on nostalgia overdrive. Today, we reminisced super hard as we watched our little sister cross the finish line of her first full marathon. We couldn’t have been more proud of her. We also couldn’t have been more emotional about watching her reach such an incredible milestone.

We’re gearing up for even more waterworks as Mother’s Day quickly approaches. All our recent reflection has emphasized just how important our mom is to us. And, as we prepare to celebrate her on Thursday, April 30th at The Falls INDULGE: Fashion and Fun for Moms event, we can’t help but get teary-eyed at how she has influenced us throughout our life. ¡Ay!, pero es tan emocional that we can’t even… Continue reading “#ThankYouMiami for Fashion – A Reflection On Our Personal Style”

Last Thursday, we kicked off our Mother’s Day celebrations early by treating our mom (“mamá”) to a day at The Falls Miami and having her join us in co-hosting a special fashion presentation for moms. Mamá lives in Boca and, thanks to Town Center Mall, is super familiar with the Simon Mall routine: lunch, shopping, primping, coffee, more shopping. Despite having a tight schedule, we got everything done with time to spare and created a few special memories along the way. These were our three favorite moments:

1. Seeing our similarities in an unexpected surprise. When we got to Macy’s to pick our looks for the evening, mamá went one way and we went another, only meeting up occasionally to reflect on our selections. We styled ourselves solo, so you can imagine our surprise when we realized that our final outfits were not only from the same exact designer but also featured similar prints. As we said to the audience at the event, “the apple clearly doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

Thursday December 1st – Prizm Perform
6:00 PM – 6:30 PM – Nyugen Smith, A Letter Home: Hoping to reach you soon, Part 2
This thirty-minute performance aims to bring together three generations of Haitians to tell a story of belonging, longing, achievement and their contributions to global culture. This story will be told through instrumentation and performative actions made by the artist and a small ensemble of Haitian residents of Miami. The ensemble will be made up of family and friends of the artist who live in Miami and are musicians in their church (Salvation Army) band. Smith dressed as a military general will lead the ensemble through a series of formations and dialog that bounces between English, French and Haitian Creole, punctuated by musical scores. As a Haitian descendant, Smith knows very little about the history, culture and legacy of the Haitian people and is using this project to learn about the aforementioned while bringing the ensemble together to share their knowledge and experience making together.

6:45 – 7:15 PM Ayana Evans, Gurl I’d Drink Your Bath Water
Evans delivers a layered performance that is part social commentary, part autobiographical. An interactive performance piece, “Gurl, I’ll Drink Your Bathwater,” a piece originally created in 2015 for Performance Anxiety in New York, NY. Within this project the act of washing represents various ideas. There are references to the religious use of water to cleanse the soul, the need for women to be “clean” in our society, beauty ideals in the US, and even a nostalgia for the Palmolive soap used in the piece because it is the same dish washing liquid used by the artist’s mother and grandmother. The title is based on the Black American old school saying, “You’re so fine, I’d drink your bathwater.” This phrase has been used as both an extreme compliment and as an all too familiar catcall for Black women. For the the iteration performed at Prizm, has a new ending has been added.

Friday December 2nd – Prizm Panels
12 PM – 12:45 PM Evolution of Black Artist Movements: Jamea Richmond-Edwards and AMber Robles-Gordon
Artists Jamea Richmond-Edwards and Amber Robles-Gordon, Co-Founders of Delusions of Grandeur artist collective will speak of the relevancy, evolution and power of artist collectives and artistic movements. Richmond-Edwards and Robles-Gordon, parlayed a series of conversations about personal experiences in the art world, the cultural influence and legacy of Howard University, and the examination of artist group and movements such as Spiral, Black Artists of DC, Africobfra and the Black Arts Movement to build a contemporary art cannon. Delusions of Grandeur is a collective of emerging artists brought together by a shared interest and commitment to their art, a need to provide critique and commentary on social infrastructures within American society and to contribute to the prominence of the collective black voice and presence within contemporary art. Delusions of Grandeur is comprised of artists Shaunte Gates, Jamea Richmond-Edwards, Amber Robles-Gordon, Stan Squirewell, Wesley Clarke and Larry Cook Jr.

1:00 – 1:45 PM Young Art Collectors presented by Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation
TBA

2:00 – 2:45 PM – Caribbean Canon: A Caribbean Art Education Initiative with Daniela Fifi, Stephanie Cunningham & Erin Hylton
The history of art in the Caribbean exists in its fragmented past, resulting in the rich and culturally diverse artistic practices present throughout the region. Despite the immense impact that Caribbean art forms have had on the economies and unique cultures of these islands, many of their artistic practices have been inadequately researched and documented. Furthermore, Caribbean art forms are oftentimes left out of the national discourse within education. This presentation aims to address the lacuna present within Caribbean art education through presenting an online platform that will provide information and resources to regional and global audiences.

3:00 – 3:45 PM – Oasa Duverney Presented by Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation
Duverney discusses her exhibition, The View From Nowhere, a showcase of social justice-driven large-scale drawings and mixed media works created to give a “visual voice” for those who continue to be silenced. Her work comes from her own lived experiences and observations, with themes ranging from criminalization of black and brown, bodies, gentrification, housing scarcity, and other pressing social justice issues facing women and people of color in New York City and the United States at-large.

4:00 – 4:45 Pm Black Femininity In Contemporary Art With Karen Senefuru
Karen Senefuru discusses The Black Woman is God exhibition, a multi-media visual and spiritual exhibition for audiences to recognize an alternative to Western cultural narratives that challenges Eurocentric notions of God. Through an examination of cosmology, womanhood, feminism, politics and psychology, The Black Woman is God challenges gaps and fragments in art history that position Black art as only ancient or contemporary, failing to honor the space in between.

Aqua Girl: A Party for a Cause

Aqua Girl® traces its beginnings to the year 1999. That year, Alison Burgos and NYC’s legendary women’s producer, Shescape, gathered a committee of like-minded women from around South Florida to produce an exciting one-night event to benefit breast cancer. The event, Sweet Charity, was an extraordinary dance event bringing together over 800 women and raising over $15,000 for two local breast cancer organizations, Cancer Link and Gilda’s Club.

Time: 7:00 pm – 10:00 pm

Cost: $25.00
Aqua Girl
Phone: 305-576-2782

Venue: Radio South Beach | 814 1st Street, Miami Beach, 33139 United States

In 2000, Sweet Charity grew into an entire weekend of events and Aqua Girl® was born. The goal was to create a dynamic national fundraising weekend celebrating women and the issues that affect them. Women descended on Miami from all over the world and the first year of this spectacular weekend of events was a huge success.

We can’t believe how time flies. Now in its sixteenth fabulous year, Aqua Girl® continues to attract women from all corners of the country, the Americas and around the globe. The week continues to grow with an ever-expanding variety of events that enhance its appeal and have created what is now the hottest women’s festivals in the country.

As the largest charity women’s week in the country, your participation in Aqua Girl® contributes to a very good cause. In fact, 100% of the proceeds from Aqua Girl® benefit the Aqua Foundation for Women, a not-for-profit foundation whose primary mission is to serve as the funding catalyst for lesbian, bisexual, and transgender wellness and equality in South Florida through grants, scholarships, and initiatives.

MDC Live Arts Offers a Mind-Bending Theater Experience
The Org Welcomes Back Cutting-Edge Chilean Theater Company Teatro Cinema

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts performing arts series presents the wildly inventive Chilean theater company, Teatro Cinema , at 8 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 16, at the Colony Theatre. The company will present Historia de Amor (Love Story), the final work in a trilogy on the subject of love, based on a graphic novel by Regis Jauffret.

The cutting-edge Teatro Cinema virtually escapes the confines of theater, using film technique, special effects, mirrors, digital imaging, and highly stylized sets to create the illusion of travelling through time and space. Live performers insert themselves into filmed and photographed backdrops and interact with illustrated stills and animations inspired by graphic novels, immersing audiences in the world that is being created.

In Historia de Amor, the company applies these techniques to tell a story that addresses the thin line between reason and madness, love and domination. An English teacher abducts a young woman and turns her into his victim, concubine and mother. He takes over her life in multiple ways, leaving her with no choice but to accept her situation and turn inward for solace. The comic-book aesthetic and black-and-white palette highlight the fragmented, solitary psyches of the woman and her captor with more nuance than theater or film alone could.

“The technical ingenuity in what they do is undeniably immense” -The Guardian

“I remain in awe of the company’s unparalleled creativity and technical prowess,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.”We are thrilled to welcome them back to Miami where they will surely influence future theater makers and audiences with their distinctive technique and style.”

Leading up to their performance, the Teatro Cinema company will offer a mullti-day workshop to Teatro Prometeo students at MDC Wolfson Campus. The residency will be an instensive look in to the company’s technique–from storyboarding to content to staging and direction.

ABOUT TEATRO CINEMA
Teatro Cinema was founded in 1987 by puppeteer Jaime Lorca, performer-designer Laura Pizarro, and writer-director Juan Carlos Zagal. They explain they chose their company’s original name “La Troppa” (The Troop) to suggest “a troop of artists marching across the demolished horizons of the cultural decay that our country had been pushed to.” The group toured extensively as La Troppa with El Santo Patrono (1987), Salmon-Voodoo (1988), Rap del Quijote (1989), Pinocchio (1991), Lobo (1992), Viaje al Centro de la Tierra (1995), Gemelos (1999), and Jesús Betz (2003). In 2005 it was renamed Teatrocinema to highlight the way its diverse artists unite theater and cinema. Historia de Amor is part of a trilogy that includes Sin Sangre (Without Blood, 2007) and El hombre que daba de beber a las mariposas (The Man Who Fed Butterflies, 2010), which toured to Lincoln Center Festival; Théâtre de la Ville and Odeón; Teatro San Martín, Buenos Aires; Piccolo Teatro, Milan; and festivals in Avignon, Bogotá, Berlin, Edinburgh, Guanajuato, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Vienna. Juan Carlos Zagal and Laura Pizarro were both born in Santiago and trained at the Catholic University of Chile. Zagal is director, performer, writer, and composer for Teatro Cinema. Pizarro was a performer, writer, and director for their work as La Troppa and is art director and designer for Teatro Cinema.

KCC Productions presents Jazz at MOCA featuring Vivian Sessoms

“A Powerhouse” (Quincy Jones)

Vivacious, vibrant, vigorous – all adjectives that describe the voice and performance of Vivian Sessoms. On Friday, April 24, you can experience this for yourself between 8 and 9:30 PM at North Miami’s Museum of Contemporary Art (“MOCA”) in a free performance of her special take on jazz and soul. Vivian, born and raised in Harlem, New York, was born with a love of music instilled in her as the daughter of two prominent musicians and niece of Nacy Wilson. Her mother was a former jingle and session singer, her father, a well-known flautist and percussionist who worked with James Brown and several other well-known musicians throughout his career.

Vivian began classically training her voice at the age of nine, and it wasn’t long before she was so well versed in her craft that she won a scholarship to the highly acclaimed Amas | Eubie Blake Repertory Company headed by the late Rosetta Lenoire. This was where she began training in theatre, dance and music, which eventually led her to a successful run in radio and television voiceovers. In fact, you’ve probably heard her, she was the soothing sound of a soprano in commercials that convinced you to purchase such products as Campbells Soup, Coke, Hershey’s and many more.

As a performer, Vivian has sung with many of the worlds most recognized artists: Stevie Wonder, Chris Botti, Cher, Christina Aguilera, Diddy, P!nk, Chaka Khan, Ke$ha, Rob Thomas, Patti Labelle, Patti Austin, Sinead O’Connor and numerous others. As a writer, Vivian has worked with just as many artists, including Ryuichi Sakamoto, Towa Tei, Lalah Hathaway, Amel Larrieux, Junior Vazquez and David Morales.

In 2007, Vivian and partner Chris Parks released their debut CD entitled “Sunny One Day,” to critical acclaim. Billboard magazine referred to Vivian’s voice as “clear and exquisite”, Uptown magazine called her voice “powerful”, and Urban Network magazine called Sunny One Day “an impressive debut so polished and effortless sounding, it’s as if it bonds to your DNA and defies you to stop playing it”.

Vivian is currently putting the finishing touches on a follow up cd, her first jazz effort, entitled “Heart,” due out this summer.

Backing Vivian will be a stellar trio of Martin Bejerano, piano, Eric England, bass & Rodolfo Zuniga, drums. MOCA is located at 770 NE 125th Street in North Miami. For more information visit mocanomi.org or call 305-893-6211.

Yo Miami & Kondoit
A hub for local artists, Yo Miami has grown since 2011 into an ecosystem where creatives can get access to resources & contacts to help them reach the next level of success in their careers. By working with businesses, nonprofi t & community organizations we are able to foster a network which enables us to create opportunities throughout the year for artists to demonstrate their talents in ways that add value to our neighborhoods. With several monthly events at various venues around Wynwood, we continually o ffer a platform where emerging artists can reach a wider audience. At the same time, we show business owners the benefits associated with incorporating arts programming into their operations, & help foster the growth of our local communities through this synergy. For Dwntwn Arts Fair we will be hand picking a lineup from Miami’s top artists. These artists will be live painting and displaying their work throughout the weekend. We encourage you to stop by our booth to meet these up and coming talented creatives to discover what inspires and motivates them, and watch them work live and in person.

Buskerfest

FoodSpark
By way of delicious food and great conversation, FoodSpark Miami will provide a fun, interactive gathering space for diverse groups of greater Miami residents to connect with one another, discuss key social issues with fellow citizens, and figure out how we can collaborate to improve the quality of life in our local neighborhoods. FoodSpark Miami is made possible in part by the 8-80 Cities Emerging City Champions 2015 Fellowship, which is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Indiegals
Every indie needs a hand, and we¹ve partnered with artists from all over to bring a uniquely curated expo of artisanal goods, earthy designs, and conscious driven showcases. We¹ve connected with the indigenous tribe from Valle de Sibundoy in the Alto Putumayo region of Colombia, to bring the tribe’s delicately handcrafted jewelry, organic essential oils, and raw incense, led by the tribe¹s artist Yolimar Loreto & the tribe-women. Also from Colombia, we present for the first time in the U.S Hagakure Home a small company based in Medellin whose home décor is derived from organic materials, raw fabrics, and designed with earthy elements. We¹re bringing goods for the home and lifestyle. Then a young, hip, and hippie indie group of artists called Gypsy Halos will be dancing around our tent expressing their love and spirit through flower crowns, leafy jewelry designs, and airy fashions. This movement is not just focused on the younger generation. We¹ve connected with our baby boomer warrior woman who¹s love for mother Earth has helped her develop an artistic eye for floral designs; Esperanza (Hope) will bring to our expo her creative orchid, succulents, air flower gardens. Last but not least, our tent will feature an art showcase called Monsterz, an Anti-bullying picturesque story created by Miami’s local Tuli. We will feature other random goodies, our farmer friends may stop by with organic goods, or maybe we¹ll have a pop-up artist color us alive! This is what Indie Gals does, we dig deep into the roots and help elevate indie creatives so that we can all break through the noise. Everyone deserves to feel the sunshine of success on their face.

Talk About It Tuesday: KKK Hate Messages Spray-Painted Around Miami Gardens

This article is shared from the Miami New Times article that was published on February 19, 2015.  This type of behavior is deeply worrisome and problem that effects all community residents!

One of five sites around Miami Gardens hit with hateful graffiti yesterday.

One of five sites around Miami Gardens hit with hateful graffiti yesterday.

Miami Gardens, the city that’s home to Sun Life Stadium and one of Florida’s highest crime rates, has had a wrenchingly difficult week. Days after police fatally shot a mentally ill man armed with a broom, city leaders are now dealing with an apparent hate crime.

Yesterday, someone spray-painted “KKK” symbols — along with phrases like “move out” — around Miami Gardens. City leaders and civil rights activists this morning are calling for justice.

“We condemn this vandalism,” Anti-Defamation League (ADL) Florida Regional Director Hava Holzhauer said in statement to New Times. “We urge law enforcement to investigate this as a potential hate crime, as well as for all members of the community to publicly denounce this hateful vandalism.”

The graffiti was found in at least five locations around Miami Gardens, a predominantly African-American city.

Miami Gardens Police Chief Stephen Johnson told reporters that the department is treating the graffiti as a grave crime. “Prank or no prank, we are going to be treating this very seriously,” he told the media.

A police spokesman told New Times this morning that no new information has emerged in the case.

The ADL, though, says that whoever left the graffiti had one goal in mind: intimidating residents in their own homes.

“[It was likely] someone within the community who seeks to instill fear in a particular group with the intent of pushing them out of the neighborhood,” Holzhauer says.

The crime comes as Johnson scrambles to deal with outrage over Monday’s shooting of Lavall Hall, a schizophrenic man whose mother had called police for help during an episode. Hall was shot and killed when he used a broom handle to attack two officers.

Anti-police-violence activists have seized on the death as the latest in the #BlackLivesMatter campaign on Twitter and Facebook, while Johnson has been quick to defend the officers involved.

ABOUT THE FILM FESTIVAL

This one-day film festival will explore cinema’s stylish film noir and neo-noir genres in the developing world. Film noir from the 1930s-1950s is characterized by stark, angular shadows; conflicted anti-heroes; chiaroscuro lighting; determined, beautiful, scheming women; obscured scenes; and isolation in modern cities. Neo-noir addresses philosophical questions about the essence of human nature, guilt, redemption, and problems of knowledge, memory and identity, while blurring the lines between right and wrong, good and evil. Two films per genre will be screened to introduce and expose the art of stylized filmmaking and foreign films in Opa-locka.

FREE public event. Viewer discretion is advised as some films may not be suitable for children.

Dilla forever.

It’s been nearly nine years since legendary Detroit hip-hop producer J Dilla (born James Dewitt Yancey) died, just three days after his 32nd birthday, from a rare blood disorder.

But there’s no doubt that Jay Dee’s legacy lives. And every year, on the anniversary of his birth, his mother, Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey, and the rest of the J-loving world, from the Motor City to NYC to London town, have celebrated Dilla Day.

Now, though, this honorary hip-hop holiday has expanded to an entire weekend. And it’s officially moved to Miami. Two weeks ago, Ma Dukes and crew announced the 23-act lineup. This week, they reveal the party plan.

Just check the cut for J Dilla Weekend 2015’s Miami schedule so far.

Florida is a simple state: gators, citrus, Walmart shoppers. It’s also a perennial target of hurricanes. And although Miami hasn’t been hit hard by any cleverly named storms in the past several years, it’s inevitable that one will come blowing through our backyard before too long. So what better time to learn more about Mother Nature’s offspring than during the calm before the stormy summer? Hit up the “Hurricanes” exhibit at the Miami Science Museum (3280 S. Miami Ave., Miami). Visitors can climb aboard a full-scale P-3 hurricane-hunter aircraft, sharpen survival skills with the Hurricane Preparedness game (hint: stock up on booze), and — in true three-little-pigs style — design, build, and test a model house to hold up against hurricane-force winds. And at the center of the storm, there’s the Magic Planet, an interactive display that lets guests explore the connection between climate change and hurricanes, and track any budding storms. We expect advance notice of your findings (so we can plan an epic hurricane party, of course).

Don’t confuse the new GPS display at Pérez Art Museum Miami (1103 Biscayne Blvd., Miami) with a cloud-based art-tracking system that captures real-time data about its expanding collection. Instead, PAMM’s “Global Positioning Systems,” curated by Rene Morales, corrals works from the museum’s permanent holdings and loans from private collectors to explore the intersection between globalization and history. The thematic group offering features a cross-generational, multinational cast of talent, whose diverse works raise questions about how the past is recorded and remembered. Morales has organized the exhibit into six related parts — History Painting, Visual Memory, The Uses of History, Urban Imaginaries, The Contested Present, and Forms of Commemoration. The sections combine to deliver an insightful overview of how the international art world has been transformed by the heightened state of global integration since the collapse of the Cold War era in the 1980s. Visitors will discover that the Magic City plays a pivotal role in the show’s focus as a nexus for art-making in the region. With Miami’s proximity to Latin America and the Caribbean, the city’s cultural, social, political, and economic growth has been affected by the events unfolding in countries across the Western Hemisphere. “It is a city poised at multiple geographic and temporal thresholds, a condition from which it draws much of its dynamism and potential,” according to a PAMM statement.

The Annual South Beach Comedy Festival returns to Miami Beach Wednesday, April 8th to Saturday, April 11th, for another fantastic comedy event featuring some of the world’s funniest entertainers. Now in its tenth year, the South Beach Comedy Festival continues to solidify its place as one of the premiere comedy festivals for top comedic talent and fans across the country.

This year’s event features Dave Chappelle,Bill Burr, Hannibal Buress, Mark Normand, Patton Oswalt and Michael Yo. Tickets are on sale through: www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge-by-phone: 1-800-745-3000.

SBCF and Live Nation, the Festival producer, welcome back The Miami Beach Visitors and Convention Authority for their tenth consecutive year along with sponsor Miami.com. Once again the Festival will utilize multiple locations to highlight its exciting variety of talent. Acts will perform at the Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theatre and the unique Gleason Room BACKSTAGE at the Fillmore.

Popular comedian Dave Chappelle will be performing three shows at the intimate Fillmore Miami Beach as part of the Tenth Annual South Beach Comedy Festival.

Thursday, April 9th / 7:30PM, Patton Oswalt takes the stage at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Patton continues to find success in all areas of entertainment, from his Grammy-nominated comedy albums to his many memorable guest roles on his favorite TV shows (including Parks and Recreation, for which he received a TV Critics Choice Award). Additionally he has appeared on Justified, Two and a Half Men, Portlandia, and Burn Notice and also voiced characters on The Simpsons and Bob’s Burgers. He was a series regular on Showtime’s United States of Tara, appeared as a guest star on Bored To Death and Flight of the Conchords on HBO and The Sarah Silverman Program on Comedy Central. Reserved Seat Tickets are $39.50 and $35.00.

Bill Burr performs Friday, April 10th / 8PM on the main stage at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Having first gained notoriety for his recurring role on the second season of Chappelle’s Show, Bill developed a comedic style of uninformed logic that has made him a regular with Letterman, Conan O’Brien and Jimmy Fallon. One of the most popular comedy podcasts on the web, Bill’s Monday Morning Podcast, is an off- the-cuff weekly rant that has become a fan favorite. Bill began the podcast in May of 2007 and has produced over 350 episodes. Bill is against organized religion and believes we should go back to the gold standard for our currency. None of his opinions are based on any sort of reliable information. He tends to go with his first thought, because reading makes him sleepy. In the near future Bill hopes to have some kids. But until then, he will continue to spend most of his mid-afternoons sitting in his sweatpants learning AC/DC songs on his SG. Reserved Seat Tickets are $49.50 and $37.50.

Mark Normand appears Friday, April 10th / 8PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore. Mark is a biting, smart comedian based in New York City. Mark was a semifinalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, his Comedy Central Presents: THE HALF HOUR special premiered last year, and his debut CD Still Got It was released last summer. Mark now does comedy clubs and colleges across the country and has been involved in many festivals and was featured as a New Face at the Montreal Comedy Festival, where he recorded a set for Canadian TV. In NYC Mark now runs two comedy shows and two podcasts, Hot Soup, a weekly show, We’re all Friends Here, a live show also recorded as a podcast, and Tuesdays with Stories!, a podcast from Stand Up NY Labs. General Admission Tickets are $20.00.

Hannibal Buress holds court on Saturday, April 11th / 8PM at the Fillmore Miami Beach. Hannibal is a wildly popular Emmy and WGA Award nominated comedian, writer and actor who The New York Times praises as having an “irresistible” comedic presence that lands squarely between “cerebral and swagger.” He is a cast member on the hit Comedy Central series Broad City and is the co-host of Adult Swim’s The Eric Andre Show. Hannibal’s highly-rated second hour standup special Hannibal Buress Live from Chicago premiered on Comedy Central, with GQ declaring “He makes us ugly laugh. Hard.” Hannibal has been featured on several comedy-fan favorite TV shows including FX’s Louie, Fox’s Bob’s Burgers and The Mindy Project, Comedy Central’s Kroll Show, and Adult Swim’s China, IL. He has written for NBC’s Saturday Night Live as well as 30 Rock, where he also appeared on camera several times. He is a regular on the late night TV circuit, with appearances on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan, and The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. Reserved Seat Tickets are $36.50.

Michael Yo performs Saturday, April 11th / 8PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore. The self-proclaimed “Half-Black Brother with a Korean Mother,” was born and raised in Houston and got his radio start in Austin at the popular central-Texas station, 96.7. He also worked in radio in Houston before moving to his other “hometown” of Miami, where he manages to stay dedicated to his Michael Yo Show on Miami’s Y100. Michael made his debut on E! in 2008 as a Host and Reporter for E! News. Michael was a regular panelist on Chelsea Lately’s round table and he can still be seen on EXTRA. General Admission Tickets are $25.00.

Once again, Mad Cat Theatre Company kicks off the Festival for the 5th time on Wednesday, April 8th / 8:30PM in the Gleason Room Backstage at the Fillmore with their production of Earthquake. Lust. Adultery. Greed. Just another day in the office for a Pulitzer Prize winning playwright chasing his glory days of two decades past. After writing a new “hard hitting, important” play, Trevor Winston has his eye set on Broadway again and in the process, finds himself compromising his work for all the wrong reasons. Can an artist survive in a world fueled by personal gain and greed? Or will he just swim in stride with the sharks? Earthquake may just shake up Broadway after all. This is a fundraiser for the Company and tickets are $60.00 (VIP) and $30.00 General Admission and $15.00 Industry and Student tickets available the day of the show at the Box Office.

Tickets are on sale Friday, February 27th at 10AM through www.southbeachcomedyfestival.com, www.livenation.com, the Fillmore Miami Beach Box Office, all TicketMaster outlets or charge by phone: 1-800-745-3000.

Fresh from its Off-Broadway run, Miracle on South Division Street is the story of the Nowak family living amidst the urban rubble of Buffalo, NY’s East Side. Clara the family matriarch happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom, a twenty-foot shrine of the Blessed Mother, which adjoins the house. This beacon commemorated the day in 1942 that the Virgin Mary appeared to her father at his home-based barbershop. During the course of this very funny and original play, the entire family’s faith is shaken to the core as the family legend seems to be unraveling. The evening’s results are heartfelt and hilarious.

Actors’ Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre continues its celebrated 2014-2015 season with a regional premiere production of the Tony Award-winning musical Ragtime from January 28 – February 22, 2015. This sweeping musical portrait of early 20th century America tells the powerful tale of a white, upper-middle class family, an African American couple, and an Eastern European immigrant escaping to America with his daughter, as they all confront the timeless contradictions of wealth, poverty, freedom, prejudice, hope, and despair in pursuit of the American Dream. Unfolding through the fiery rhythms of Harlem and Tin Pan Alley, and the vibrant klezmer of the Lower East Side, this vivid and unforgettable Tony-winning score bursts onto the stage in what will be the largest and most epic production ever staged at the Miracle Theatre.

Talk About it Tuesday: Protest Leads to Eight Arrests

Activists Protest Recent Police Violence Against Minority Youth Across US

This past Thursday eight protestors were arrested in Miami during a demonstration against the death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and against the death of local teenager Israel Hernandez in 2013. Both killed were only 18 years of age and both were unarmed. Phil Agnew, who organized the protest stated that the death of both of these young men shows, “proof that racist police departments around the country will continue to use black and brown bodies for target practice.”

The protestors organized by Phil Agnew call themselves the Dream Defenders. Last Thursday they protested in the lobby of Miami’s federal justice building. They raised their arms in silence hoping to get a meeting with U.S. Attorney Wifredo Ferrer, who works with the Southern District of Florida.

Eight protesters refused to leave the building when Police asked them to exit, as the building was about to close for the day. Those eight were arrested and put in plastic handcuffs. Marcia Olivo, one of those arrested, stated, “We’re the voice of the mothers in our community who live in constant fear of not seeing their children come back.” Another protestor arrested, Curtis Hierro stated, “We need more and more folks to take this type of action and make it very clear that we need action on the part of our elected leadership and the folks in the Department of Justice.”

As Miami residents how do you feel about the eight protestors being arrested? What do you think needs to be done to prevent more deaths like this from happening? Tweet us at @Loop305 with the hash tag #TalkAboutitTuesday

Behavior (Conducta) (Cuba), directed by Ernesto Daranas. FLORIDA PREMIERE. *OPENING NIGHT FILM – FOLLOWED BY OPENING NIGHT PARTY AT THE SOON-TO-BE-OPENED “BALL & CHAIN” NIGHTCLUB. In director Ernesto Daranas’ second dramatic feature film, which will screen opening night at MIFFecito, a Havana boy sent to a reform school becomes the subject of a moral tug-of-war between generational ideologies in today’s Cuba. The complex, dramatic story centers on Chala, who on the critical cusp of adolescence, scrapes by with few positive role models as he illegally trains fight dogs. After Chala is sent to reform school, his addict mother’s attempts to have him released set up a chain reaction among the school leaders. Since its premiere in Cuba, the film became an unexpected social phenomenon sparking Cuba’s current social state as a hot topic for discussion.

“The Blue Car” (“El carro azul”) (Germany / Cuba), directed by Valerie Heine. FLORIDA PREMIERE. A short dramatic film about Marcos. His grandmother’s death forces Hansel, his worldly brother, to return Cuba to care for him, and an old family game helps restore the trust lost over the years.

Carmina and Amen (Carmina y amén) (Spain), directed by Paco León. NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE. Actor-cum-director Paco León is a familiar face to Miami art film lovers. He starred in the 2013 film Three Many Weddings which played at MiamiFF31. But the year prior, he created a charming showcase for the incredible force, charisma and outrageous personality of his actress-mother Carmina Barrios’ in Carmina or Blow-Up, which became an unexpected hit both in Spain and Miami. In this 2014 sequel, Carmina and Amen, Carmina triumphantly returns, upgrading the low-budget original with a deeper, more mature work that ups the ante on her larger-than-life outlook on family, sex, death and any other topic that falls into her purview.

I Can Quit Whenever I Want (Smetto quando voglio) (Italy), directed by Sydney Sibilia. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Full of terrific, farcical comedy and wicked social commentary, I Can Quit Whenever I Want is director Sydney Sibilia’s vehicle to offer Italians the chance to chuckle at the gloomy 43% unemployment rate for Italy’s youth. Realizing their post-graduate degrees are worthless, a rag-tag crew of desperate intellectuals imagine a new psychotropic drug, and then apply their refined but completely unmarketable skills to the illicit drug trade, much to the chagrin of the local Mafia. This film was nominated for 12 Donatello Awards, the Academy Awards of Italy.

Lake Los Angeles (U.S.A.), directed by Mike Ott. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Francisco, played by Miami’s own Roberto Sanchez, is a middle-aged Cuban man who works odd construction jobs, and makes money on the side by providing his home as a holding house for illegal Mexican immigrants. Cecilia, a 10-year-old Mexican girl, crosses the border hoping to find a better life in the US, but her treacherous journey into the Promised Land will test her spiritual and physical fortitude. Lake Los Angeles (2014) completes Mike’s desert trilogy which also includes: Littlerock (2010) and Pearblossom Hwy (2012).

Life Feels Good (Chce siÄ™ zyć) (Poland), directed by Maciej Pieprzyca. FLORIDA PREMIERE. The winner of several major awards at the 2014 Polish Academy Awards, Life Feels Good is the funny, brazen, sexual, fierce and wistfully melancholic story of Mateusz, a boy born with cerebral palsy and whose inner voice dialogue drives the film’s narrative during his 26 year fight to communicate with the world. Like My Left Foot, which is also based on a true story, the Maciej Pieprzyca-directed film draws parallels to Poland’s national struggles over the time period of Mateusz’s life, both the nation and the man refusing to give up.

Paradise (Paraíso) (Mexico), directed by Mariana Chenillo. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Mariana Chenillo’s second feature film takes on society’s obsession with “the perfect body” through light-hearted humor, poignant wit and absurd definitions of relationship balance. A deeply in-love, overweight married couple’s relationship suffers when, humiliated by social weight-loss chatter, they mutually seek to shrink their plus-sized bodies. Only one spouse succeeds, burdening the “failing” spouse with today’s idea of appearance and self-worth, even in the presence of unconditional love. The premiere at the Festival will be Chenillo’s second visit. Her previous film, Nora’s Will, won the Audience Award at MiamiFF26 in 2009.

Root (Raiz) (Chile), directed by Matías Rojas Valencia. FLORIDA PREMIERE. What happens when the estranged, abused 20-something daughter of a privileged family spontaneously adopts a nine year old boy orphaned from her domineering mother’s maid’s death? A long, rewarding road-trip, fraught with self-discovery, and bond-building. Despite their considerable age difference, Amalia and Cristobal’s common experiences of difficult family life are reinforced by director Matías Rojas Valencia’s striking, imposing scenery, at once building connections between the characters, the planet, and the wonders of life itself.

Spanish Affair (Ochos apellidos vascos) (Spain), directed by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro. EAST COAST PREMIERE. No film in 2014 has tapped the Spanish zeitgeist to the astonishing level represented by Emilio Martínez-Lázaro’s Spanish Affair, catapulting the 98-minute comedy to become the all-time highest-grossing Spanish film at the domestic Spanish box office. A love-smitten Seville man must pretend to be a Basque man in order to win the girl of his dreams, highlighting the cultural divide between northern and southern Spain. The tensions of Basque separatist sentiments, exasperated by Spain’s economic crisis, are a difficult daily reality, providing a taboo-busting opportunity to ease the pain with laughter through a seemingly-innocent film that proves otherwise.

Vara: A Blessing (Bhutan / Hong Kong / Sri Lanka), directed by Khyentse Norbu. FLORIDA PREMIERE. Director Khyentse Norbu’s lush, breathtaking visuals unfold the story of India’s brutal, indiscriminate caste system, which too-frequently constricts the possibility for the simplest, earnest relationships. The communion of love, art and spirituality collide when a lower-caste Muslim enraptures a lovely Hindu girl through the earthy, artistic grace of pottery, complicating village elder plans of marrying Lila off to a wealthy scion. Vara: A Blessing is a triumphant expression of whirling dance, music and the boundaries of devotion. The film is accompanied by music from worldwide famed composer and producer Nitin Sawhney. Director Norbu, who is a practicing lama, visited MiamiFF21 in 2004 when his previous film, Travellers & Magicians, was screened at the Olympia Theater.

In addition to MIFFecito’s slate of premieres, visionary playwright and director Moisés Kaufman will host a special event titled A Conversation with Moisés Kaufman & THE LARAMIE PROJECT Retrospective Screening. The Laramie Project, his landmark 2002 HBO documentary, chronicles the legislative aftermath of gay teen Matthew Shephard’s hate-crime murder. The film, an exposé of intolerance and discrimination which echoes current news from Russia and Africa, offers fresh lessons in the ongoing war. The Matthew Shepard Hate Crimes Prevention Act has positively impacted the past five years in the United States. The director will lead a post-screening conversation on the issues, techniques, and engagement his landmark film helped spark. Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, Kaufman is currently in Miami rehearsing for the November debut of Bizet’s Carmen, which is being co-produced by his Tectonic Theater Project.

Producing sponsors of MIFFecito include Ball & Chain Bar & Lounge.

Carlos Suarez De Jesus

Mario Algaze is the rare lensman with an innate talent for harnessing the subtle interplay of light and shadow to capture his subjects in a poetic and timeless fashion. The prominent Cuban-American photographer is celebrating“A Respect for Light: The Photography of Mario Algaze” at HistoryMiami (101 W. Flagler St., Miami), which features more than 150 of Algaze’s attention-commanding images shot throughout Latin America and the Caribbean over the past 40 years. The sprawling show, which marks his most ambitious exhibit to date and his first retrospective museum exhibition in more than a decade, will also include some of the shutterbug’s early concert photography, offering a rare look at South Florida’s vibrant musical history. Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., you can catch Algaze’s intimate portrayal of life in Bolivia, Ecuador, Mexico, and Cuba, as well as other countries in the hemisphere, where Algaze has documented the people and places he’s visited soon after daybreak in the luminous conditions he favors. “The most important ingredient in my photographs is a very early-morning light, a magical light, which on most days only allows you about an hour to work,” Algaze explains. “There’s a certain quality before 9:30 in the morning, where light hits in a 45-degree angle and there are long shadows and soft light. If I could, I would light every scene, but I can’t. I have to rely on Mother Nature,” Algaze writes in the forward to his new book, A Respect for Light: The Latin American Photographs 1974-2008, which is being released in conjunction with the exhibition. Admission to the opening reception is free and includes complimentary wine, gourmet cheeses, and live music. Call 305-375-1492 or visit historymiami.org.
