Spiritual leaders from the east and west are converging in South Florida to discuss the universal concept of compassion. It’s a word used often, but how can compassion serve to improve individual lives and communities? During a panel discussion at Florida International University, the public is invited to hear from such respected sources as Mahatma Gandhi’s grandson Arun Gandhi and Yogi Master Paramahamsa Prajnanananda – Prajnanananda is the 7th lineage leader of the ancient meditative practice Kriya Yoga — one of the oldest and most sacred of the meditative techniques from India.

The theme is Love and Compassion are Our True Nature, An Interfaith Dialogue. Registration begins at 6 p.m., panel commences at 6:30 p.m. and concludes at 9:30 p.m. after audience Q&A.

The purpose of both events is to promote love, compassion and intercultural understanding through a non-political forum where recognized leaders in a variety of traditions can expound on their views to achieving happiness and unity.

The symposium is dedicated to the memory of his Holiness Paramahamsa Hariharananda, the renowned spiritual leader of the Kriya Yoga Institute, and in celebration of his pilgrimage to the west, exactly 40 years ago.

These events are a rare opportunity for interested people to attend public discussions lead by notable leaders in the spiritual realm. Reservations are strongly suggested and can be made by calling 305-247-1960 or via email at institute@kriya.org

Join Platform Art, a non-profit arts organization, in downtown Lakeland on April 20 to celebrate its 10-year anniversary with it’s signature event, Art Party 21. Held at Wall Foss Financial at 212 East Highland Drive. Doors open at 7 p.m. and the festivities begin at 7:30 and last until 11 p.m. Art Party 21 will feature visual art, film fashion, sound, and performance pieces, along with food, beer and wine. A hidden gem of Central Florida, Art Party 21 has never and will never be the same show twice. Each year’s event is held at a unique venue bringing a different selection of local artists from Lakeland and throughout Florida.

Art Party 21 is open to the public. Discount tickets for the 10th Anniversary celebration, Art Party 21, are available for $10 per person at www.platformart.org. Tickets are $20 per person on the day of the event. Miami-Dade County Aviation Director José Abreu and Port Director Bill Johnson will brief Miami-Dade County’s international business community on the economic impact of Miami International Airport and PortMiami in 2012, as well as forecast the city’s trade growth at the 26th State-of-the-Ports Briefing at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Miami Airport Convention Center.

Abreu will provide an update on the construction projects completed during 2012, the projects scheduled for this year and the impact of these improvements have on global trade growth and on maintaining Miami’s position as the “Trade and Logistics Center of the Americas.” Johnson will offer a progress report on port improvements and on PortMiami’s trade diversification efforts.

More than 1,200 executives are expected to attend the briefing and luncheon hosted by the World Trade Center Miami.
