Scientists warn sea level rise is accelerating around the globe. Learn about how it will affect South Florida at the premiere of “Antarctic Ice Paintings: Global Coastlines and Underwater HOA” exhibit, featuring 60 untitled, never-shown-before paintings created by leading environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, while on a National Science Foundation Antarctic Artists and Writers Program fellowship. In Antartica, Cortada learned from scientists that the very ice sheets he was using for his art would eventually drown his beloved city. The Antarctic Ice Paintings exhibition debuts on November 8, 2018 and will run thru January 13, 2019. General consuls will be invited to help name the 60 paintings, which represent other coastal communities threatened by rising sea levels. This exhibit is part of a larger participatory art project titled “Underwater HOA” scheduled to take place this coming December during Art Basel in collaboration with the Village of Pinecrest. It is free and open to the public. Stop by 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday & Sunday, in the Hibiscus Gallery at Pinecrest Gardens, located at 11000 Red Road. Orchestra Miami’s Nicklaus Children’s Family Fun Series concludes at 3 PM on Sunday, March 25th with “Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant” and “ A Treeful of Monkeys”, two delightful and witty pieces for children performed by the chamber ensemble of Orchestra Miami and narrator.
What do you get when you mix a tuba with a baboon? A tubaboon! Prepare to explore a wilderness where birds, beasts, vegetables and flowers have been mysteriously scrambled together to create creatures you’ve never seen before! Behold the Bold Umbrellaphant is based on the award-winning children’s book of the same name by poet Jack Prelutsky, with music composed by Lucas Richman. Known as the “Children’s Poet Laureate” Mr. Prelutsky is the pre-eminent author of silly poems for kids. This mash-up of inanimate objects with animals will have you giggling and trying to guess what comes next!
A Treeful of Monkeys is composed by Daniel Dorff, and based on a traditional African Folk Tale about a hat seller who takes a nap under a tree and wakes up to discover that all the monkeys are wearing his hats! How will he get them back? Find out in this charming and fun piece.
Both pieces are performed by the chamber ensemble of Orchestra Miami, featuring Orlando Forte on the violin, Stanley Spinola on the French Horn, Robert Deutsch on the Cello, Christine Pascual-Fernandez on the Clarinet, Mark Schubert on percussion and Elaine Rinaldi on the piano, and narrated by Carbonell Award winning actor Chaz Mena.

Save the date! Feb 17 at 8: the South Motors Jazz Series at Pinecrest Gardens presents NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis, with Jason Stewart (bass) and Herlin Riley (drums). “Marsalis is a one-of-the-kind gem, a living legend.” (John Soltes, hollywoodsoapbox.com). Tickets $30-35 at pinecrestgardens.org. Music courtesy of KCC Productions.

From his first professional performance with “The Groovy Boys” over fifty years ago, Ellis Marsalis has been a major influence in jazz. At that time, Marsalis was one of the few New Orleans musicians who did not specialize in Dixieland or rhythm and blues. He played with fellow modernists including Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley, and Al Hirt, becoming one of the most respected pianists in jazz. Though he has recorded almost twenty of his own albums, and was featured on many discs with such musicians as David “Fathead” Newman, Eddie Harris, Marcus Roberts, and Courtney Pine, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching.

As a leading educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, the University of New Orleans, and Xavier University of Louisiana, Ellis has influenced the careers of countless musicians, including Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick Jr., and Nicholas Payton; as well as his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfeayo and Jason. In May, 2007, Marsalis received an honorary doctorate from Tulane University for his contributions to jazz and musical education.

On December 7, 2008, Ellis Marsalis was inducted into The Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

Through the generosity of South Motors and the National Endowment for the Arts we are proud to announce that four of the artists will participate in a special educational initiative we call South Motors Gen-Next Jam. Nestor Torres, Brian Lynch, Ellis Marsalis and Spyro Gyra will mentor gifted students from the New World School of the Arts High School under the direction of Jim Gasior. Check the calendar for locations and times of these special free workshops.

On December 7, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist, Xavier Cortada, will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his Longitudinal Installation by unveiling a replica of the ceramic sculpture, which will be on permanent display at Pinecrest Gardens. Florida’s Secretary of State Ken Detzner will be present for a dedication ceremony in addition to Palmer Trinity students. The participatory art piece captures voices from 24 individuals across the globe who have been impacted by climate change.

Cortada first created the Longitudinal Installation in the South Pole in 2007 and in the North Pole in 2008. During both visits, Cortada placed 24 shoes in a circle, each aligned across 24 longitudes. He stopped in front of each of his longitudinal shoe markers and read a quote aloud that revealed a person’s experience with climate change from that part of the world. His artistic ritual illustrated the ways in which individuals all over the world have been profoundly impacted by climate change. Guests are invited to recite the 24 quotes, as Cortada did at both ends of the world. This event is free and open to the public. The dedication of “Longitudinal Installation” will take place at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW Red Road, on December 7 from 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.cortada.com. 305-669-6990

In his Epoch exhibit, nationally-acclaimed environmental artist and Pinecrest Gardens’ first artist-in-residence, Xavier Cortada portrays life that has existed on our planet over the past 500 million years and invites the audience to ponder what life forms will inhabit the earth in the future. Conversations and thoughts on time, growth, and extinction will be brought to light as a result of Cortada’s unique interpretation of the individual’s adaptations or lack-thereof. As we move through the current epoch, the Anthropocene, humans themselves are changing the global climate and Earth’s ecosystems. Our reckless emission of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, along with our extensive use of pesticides, our endless yearning for fertile land, and our unyielding population growth are greatly accelerating the rate of extinction of our fellow species. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Exhibit runs November 30, 2017 through January 14, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday in the historic Hibiscus Gallery at Pinecrest Gardens, 11000 SW Red Road, Pinecrest, FL 33156. Find out as Orchestra Miami’s Nicklaus Children’s Pinecrest Outpatient Center Family Fun Concert Series begins with The Composer is Dead, a murder mystery for the whole family from the twisted mind of Lemony Snicket!! This hysterically funny, tongue-in-cheek introduction to the orchestra, with music by Nathaniel Stookey, will be performed by the 46 musicians of Orchestra Miami, conducted by Elaine Rinaldi. To set the scene of mystery and murder, the orchestra will also perform Mussorgsky’s “Night on Bald Mountain” & Berlioz’s chilling “March to the Scaffold” from Symphonie Fantastique.

Gulliver Schools is set to host EdCamp Miami on Saturday, November 12, where educators from diverse backgrounds will meet to discuss topics and ideas they wish to gain and contribute knowledge to.

Free and open to all educators, the event will be completely participant-driven, allowing attendees to focus on areas of education that are most important to them. Participants will write down the topics that interest them the most on sticky notes and paste them on a communal board. Session facilitators will then organize sessions based on common themes and the most popular topics.

The EdCamp Miami team is made up of notable teachers and administration from Gulliver Schools and Florida International University. In true Edcamp style, session facilitators will be determined the morning of the event, based on interest.
