Thirty years ago, Ocean Drive magazine was born – which redefined a media genre and ignited the resurrection of South Beach as the global hot spot we know today. Having launched in 1993, the glossy made its grand entrance onto the scene during the roaring ‘90s of Miami nightlife and subsequently became the “Bible of South Beach,” encapsulating the hottest, trendiest who’s who and what’s what of South Beach, both in the magazine and at its iconic events.

This year marks the 30th anniversary of Ocean Drive, and in true Miami style, the publication will be hosting a celebratory bash at the Loews Miami Beach Hotel on Thursday, March 23rd, from 8:00PM-11:00PM. Cover stars Tyson Beckford and Jasmine Sanders, along with legends from Miami nightlife, will come together for a special VIP event that pays homage to all of the movers and shakers of the ‘90s who helped shape the city’s evolution. Syncing with the thrilling energy of Miami Music Week, attendees can look forward to live DJ sets and a curated performance line-up starring DJ Irie, Victor Calderone, Miami drag legend, Adora, and Haitian-born rap sensation and multi-instrumentalist, Wyclef Jean.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this December, Loews Miami Beach Hotel has long been recognized as the catalyst that made the South Beach hotel scene what it is today. Over the years, the oceanfront resort and Ocean Drive have collaborated on standout events, making it the ideal location for the magazine’s 30th anniversary festivities.

While toasting to the past and welcoming the present, Ocean Drive acknowledges some of Miami Beach’s pioneers who helped build the foundation of our Magic City: Alan Roth, Ingrid Casares, Chris Paciello, Nicola Siervo, Rony Seikaly, Marita Stavrou, Tommy Pooch, Tara Solomon, Bill Spector, Conrad Gomez, Navin Chatani, and Esteban Cortazar.

This event is invite-only.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents an Evening of Dvořák Masterworks Featuring Grammy Winner Zuill Bailey 3/23/23

Cost: $25 – $95

South Florida Symphony Orchestra will present a bold and daring evening of Dvořák Masterworks, featuring his love letter to America, Symphony No. 9 in E minor: “From the New World” as well as Cello Concerto in B minor, the greatest of all cello concertos, performed by Grammy Award-winning artist Zuill Bailey – who also appeared during the Symphony’s inaugural concert 25 years ago. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, the concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 23, at New World Center in Miami Beach. Tickets are on sale, now.

Maestra Alfonso and Zuill Bailey have known each other since their days at Peabody Conservatory. Over the years, he has become a frequent SFSO guest artist and a favorite among audiences. He is widely considered one of the premier cellists in the world and is an internationally renowned soloist, artistic director, and teacher. His illustrious recording career consists of over 20 titles. His CD, Dvořák Cello Concerto is listed in Penguin’s Guide as one of the Top 1000 Classical Recordings of All Time. He also won a GRAMMY for Best Solo Performance for his live recording of Tales of Hemingway by composer Michael Daugherty. A consummate concerto soloist, Bailey has been featured with symphony orchestras worldwide, including Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, Israel, Cape Town, Russia, Hong Kong, Jordan, Mexico, South America, the United Kingdom, and Austria. He has collaborated with such conductors as Itzhak Perlman, Alan Gilbert, Andrew Litton, Neeme Jarvi, Giancarlo Guerrero, James DePriest, and Jun Markl, to name a few. Classical Net calls Bailey “easily one of the finest cellists alive today,” and states that he “commands a simply lovely tone, passionate and full of vigor,” in a review of his Dvořák Cello Concerto recording.

In 1892, Antonín Dvořák was recruited to be the director for the National Conservatory of Music in New York City, which opened in 1888 to make music education available to talented students from every background, including marginalized communities and fostering the creation of American national music. In his quest to bring the sounds of America into European classical music, his most famous work was born, the four-movement Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, better known as “New World Symphony.” In the lead-up to its 1893 premiere by the New York Philharmonic at Carnegie Hall, Dvořák commented that he thought the core of an American sound could be found in Native American communities and African American spirituals, which you can hear in the composition. Upon its premiere, a reporter for the New York Herald observed that the new symphony was “a noble composition…of heroic proportions.”

Cello Concerto in B minor, the most widely regarded and also the last solo concerto by Antonín Dvořák, will be performed by Zuill Bailey. Written in 1894 for Dvořák’s friend, the cellist Hanuš Wihan, it premiered in London in 1896 by the English cellist Leo Stern. Dvořák wrote the concerto while in New York City for his third term as the director of the National Conservatory. After hearing composer Victor Herbert’s Cello Concerto No. 2 in E minor, Op. 30, Dvořák was inspired to complete a cello concerto of his own. Herbert had been principal cellist in the New York Philharmonic that premiered Dvořák’s “New World Symphony” in 1893.

Tickets for the Dvořák Masterworks program start at $25 for New World Center. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org/masterworks-iv-2022-2023 or by calling (954) 522-8445.

Members of the ensemble join NWS Fellows in two world premieres by Sofía Rocha and Fernanda Navarro. Stately organ chorales by ultra-Romantic Johannes Brahms take on new splendor in these arrangements for brass. Dmitri Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet is one of his most popular works and features a demanding piano part that the composer premiered himself.

The Collins Park Neighborhood Association and the Global Arts Project present the Spam Allstars in Collins Park at 5 PM Sunday Feb 26 in the first free Artscape concert of 2023. The Allstars have been at it for 20+ years.  The band has a core group of musicians who have been performing an average of 150 shows per year, across the US and some very special trips to Europe, Canada, South America and South Africa.  They held a weekly residency at the legendary Little Havana club Hoy Como Ayer every Thursday for 15 years which attracted everyone from Good Morning America to the NY Times, a variety of celebrity appearances, and numerous musical special guests sitting in. As time has passed the songs have evolved, recordings have been made, and the sound took on a different form which is a distinct blend of Latin, funk, and electronic music.  This electronic descarga is a reflection of the musicians and their cultures, training, and musical influences.

“An authentic Miami sound is being forged by [the Spam Allstars]…”
– Rolling Stone

“A good old Latin jam, a “descarga’, with the same spirit of Cuba where descarga originated.”
– BBC

Miami’s favorite DJ, Adora, will open the show at 3:30. There will be food and beverage vendors on hand for refreshments. It’s Family Day at the Bass so be sure to bring the kids.

Nucleus, a venture studio for psychedelics wholly owned by Iter Investments, will present its monthly Psychedelic Series at Soho Beach House Miami on Thursday, February 9 at 7 p.m. Moderated by psychedelics expert Dustin Robinson, Esq. CPA, panelists include Stanley Cup champion and Wesana CEO Daniel Carcillo and Managing Partner at Ambria Capital and Phyto Partners Cody Shandraw. The topic of the panel is, “Real Estate for Psychedelics – the Healing REIT.”

Carcillo and Shandraw are founders of Healing REIT, alongside CEO Ty Zakovich. Healing REIT invests in real estate designed for innovative medicine. The current healthcare infrastructure does not support the already, and soon-to-be approved, FDA-novel therapies like ketamine, MDMA and psilocybin-assisted therapy. As a real estate investment trust that connects investors to clinics looking to adopt psychedelic therapies and other novel treatment options, Healing REIT is creating a win-win situation for those looking to invest in this budding industry and clinicians looking to provide the best treatment possible to their patients.

Launched in June 2021 by Robinson and visionary leader Sam Baum, the Psychedelic Series has seen great success, hosting over 25 panels with over 75 notable speakers and over 1,500 people in attendance. The Psychedelic Series features experts in the psychedelics space including CEOs, doctors, lawyers and celebrities. The panel started at Soho Beach House Miami and expanded to locations throughout the country including New York, Chicago and California, as well as internationally in London and Amsterdam. Past panelists include MAPS Founder Rick Doblin, NBA champion Lamar Odom, Psilera Bioscience CEO Chris Witowski, PhD, Silo Wellness CEO Douglas K. Gordon, and others.

Robinson is Founding Partner of Mr. Cannabis Law – a full service law firm focused on the cannabis and psychedelic industries; Co-Founder of Mr. Psychedelic Law – a non-profit focused on psychedelic legal reform; Managing Principal of Iter Investments – a venture capital firm deploying capital across the psychedelic ecosystem; and Co-Founder of Nucleus – a platform with various tools to help guide individuals on their mental health journey.

Carcillo founded Wesana Health after his own personal experience with psychedelics in healing brain injuries he obtained as a hockey player. He’s a two-time Stanley Cup winner with the Chicago Blackhawks, however Carcillo was forced into early retirement when he was just 30 after suffering from post-concussion syndrome. His recovery, due in large part to psychedelics, led him to found Wesana Health. Wesana Health is an emerging life sciences company championing the development and delivery of therapies, including psychedelics, to treat traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related conditions. Through extensive clinical research and academic partnerships, the company is developing evidence-based formulations and protocols that empower patients to overcome neurological, psychological and mental health ailments caused by trauma.

Shandraw has been a serial entrepreneur from an early age, striving to be a proven producer of profit in all of his ventures. Shandraw serves as a Managing Partner at Ambria Capital and Phyto Partners. He manages market assessment projects and due diligence, as well as client relationships. He oversees one of the most active due diligence programs in the psychedelics industry, focused on early-stage companies and non-traditional venture opportunities. Shandraw is passionate about advocating for psychedelic-assisted therapies and advancing their place in the mental healthcare landscape. To date, he and his team have backed more than 50 companies and supported many in growth to scale. He was recently recognized and honored as the 2021 Investor of the Year at the first annual Microdose Awards.

The event is private and only open to Soho House members.

The Spirit of Goodwill Band
The Spirit of Goodwill band, made up of people with a variety of disabilities – come together to play beautiful music. Their journey is one filled with setbacks, victories and—ultimately—growth as individuals. Their joy of participation and sense of empowerment shows on each musician’s face as they play.
This disciplined group of men and women, with their own style of music, has much more to give than just a great sound. They offer inspiration and the message of music’s nurturing powers for people with and without disabilities. This band is about a fundamental need of people just wanting to belong, to be accepted. Participating in the band is their way of demonstrating to both themselves and their critics that they have something to contribute to society: skills, talent and commitment. The band proves to be an important life lesson of hope and courage.

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Shostakovich, Gottsch and Great Opera Arias 1/24/23

South Florida Symphony Orchestra Presents Shostakovich, Gottsch and Great Opera Arias

New World Center
500 17th Street,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139

Cost: Tickets start at just $25 for the concert at New World Center

South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) 25th anniversary season continues to shine with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, the world premiere of Ocklawaha by composer-in-residence John Gottsch, and a selection of great opera arias from Puccini, Verdi, and Lara. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso with guest soloists Catalina Cuervo, soprano, and Adam Diegel, tenor, the Masterworks program is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on January 24 at New World Center in Miami Beach.

Originally intended to be to a grandiose piece that would glorify Stalin’s regime and Russian victory over the Nazis in 1945, Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 rendered a more complex, thoughtful and sometimes carefree composition. The composer was known for his resistance to the Soviet rule and his subversion tactics often promising to compose the piece the regime wanted while actually giving it something else.

SFSO’s composer-in-residence John Gottsch will present the world premiere of Ocklawaha. The Ocklawaha is a river originating in the lakes of central Florida and flowing north through some of the most mysterious, wild, and breathtakingly beautiful parts of the state. As a young boy, the composer traveled the Ocklawaha with his father, learning the history of the river and surrounding lakes, that brought to life on passing shores, the escaped slaves, Seminole warriors, and a Civil War battle. The musical narrative brings to life the storied struggles of Florida’s Native American ancestors through thoughtfully arranged orchestral movements.

John D. Gottsch was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and moved to Florida with his family, shortly thereafter. He spent his youth in the lake country of the Sunshine State traveling extensively and observing natural habitats. These explorations of Florida gave him an enduring love for its beauty and wildlife. He has been a lifelong composer and a number of his compositions reflect his deep appreciation of the outdoors. Last year, SFSO premiered the live performance of Gottsch’s original composition Princess Yurievskaya, and in 2020, SFSO premiered Sunset, both of which were featured on Gottsch’s 2020 debut album released by Naxos Records, the world’s leading classical music label. SFSO also performed Gottsch’s Bagatelles for Violin & Piano as part of its Summer With the Symphony Series in June 2021. His piano suite, Homosassa, premiered in Palm Beach in 2020. His piano quintet, Maryland Hunt, premiered at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington, DC in 2018 and has been performed in Philadelphia, Vienna, Rotterdam and Baltimore. Gottsch, a full-time doctor, now splits his time between Baltimore and Key West.

In addition, the program includes with a selection of great opera arias performed by Catalina Cuervo and Adam Diegel – Puccini’s “O Mio Babbino Caro,” “Un Bel Dì, Vedremo,” and “O Soave Fanciulla,” Agustín Lara’s “Granada,” Verdi’s “La Donna è Mobile” and “Brindisi” (The Drinking Song from La Traviata).

Tickets for the Masterworks II program start at $25 for New World Center. Tickets may be purchased by visiting southfloridasymphony.org/2022-23-season or by calling (954) 522-8445.

Anna in the Tropics 1/12/23

Anna in the Tropics
Thursday, 01/12/2023-02/05/2023, 08:00 pm-
The Colony Theatre
1040 Lincoln Road,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139
Website
Cost: $40 – $70

Miami New Drama is preparing to roll out the red carpet on the 20th Anniversary production of the Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Anna in the Tropics. Written by Miami playwright Nilo Cruz, it was commissioned by the New Theatre in Coral Gables back in 2002. Since then, it has made the rounds including London, L.A., and Broadway, and has featured award-winning actors such as Jimmy Smits, Tony Plana, and Lolita Flores, to name a few. After 20 years, Miami will not only get to see it at The Colony Theatre, but this time, they’ll get to experience it with Nilo Cruz as its director for a three-week run between January 12 through February 5, 2023.

The audience will be transported back to 1929 to a Cuban American cigar factory where Cuban migrants labored away hand rolling each cigar, as a hired “lector”, who was traditionally well-dressed and eloquent, would read to them as a form of entertainment. When a new lector enters the scene and begins to read aloud Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina, he unwittingly becomes a catalyst in the lives of his avid listeners and suddenly the lives of the workers begin to parallel the novel. Old traditions and new ways collide while longing, love, and betrayal spark a volatile flame that signals the end of an era.

Anna in the Tropics runs from January 12, 2023, through February 5 at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach, FL 33139) with an opening night scheduled for October 29th. Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets ($40 – $70) are on sale at miaminewdrama.org or by calling Miami New Drama’s Box Office at (305) 674 -1040 or email at boxoffice@miaminewdrama.org.

CPA, panelists include Jeremy Abramson, founder of Microdosing Mastermind and chief energy officer and podcast host of Thrive University; and Irina Vlada, co-founder of Evolve, certified awareness coach, master yoga teacher, and psychedelic integration mentor. The panelists will discuss their expertise in psychedelics coaching.

The Psychedelic Series features experts in the psychedelics space including CEOs, doctors, lawyers and celebrities. The panel started at Soho Beach House Miami and expanded to locations throughout the country including New York, Chicago and California, as well as internationally in London. Past panelists include NBA champion Lamar Odom, Stanley Cup champion and Wesana CEO Daniel Carcillo, Psilera Bioscience CEO Chris Witowski, PhD, Silo Wellness CEO Douglas K.

Abramson is one of the world’s most respected thought leaders and mindset coaches specializing in holistic wellness/plant medicines including psychedelics and microdosing. He coaches high-level entrepreneurs and athletes to optimize their flow state, creativity, and cognition. In 2022, Abramson founded the Microdosing Mastermind, where he has mentored over 100+ students on their microdosing journeys. Vlada’s personal story is a powerful narrative that blends international roots, world travel and unique experiences as well as adversity, addiction and new beginnings. As an awareness coach, her path is deeply rooted in the discovery and exploration of the authentic self and mindful practices. She is the co-founder of Evolve, the Wellness App for personal transformation via evolutionary modalities. Life experiences inspired Vlada to continue her education in addiction recovery and psychedelic integration to cultivate the connection and sense of unity for those who have been suffering from disconnection and isolation. Working in partnership with Mindbloom, a national ketamine telemedicine company out of New York, Vlada has seen over 150 clients in the last year who are embarking on ketamine medicine journeys for mental health purposes, and the success stories are overwhelming. Now she leads Psychedelic Integration Circles and Psychedelic Panel Discussions to raise awareness around the power of intentional use of psychedelic medicine.

Tchaikovsky, Elgar and Barber Masterworks will launch South Florida Symphony Orchestra’s (SFSO) celebratory 25th anniversary 2022/23 season of artistic excellence at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, November 10, at New World Center in Miami Beach. Led by Music Director Sebrina María Alfonso, SFSO will perform Tchaikovsky’s beloved Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35, with featured soloist Askar Salimdjanov; Elgar’s series of short musical portraits, Enigma, Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36; and Barber’s orchestral work in one movement, First Essay for Orchestra, Op. 12.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto in D major, one of the most beloved violin concertos in history, is a romantic masterpiece. Radiating Russian spirit, Tchaikovsky’s only violin concerto will be performed by Askar Salimdjanov.

Salimdjanov is a multiple winner of the Lyric Chamber Music Competition, which led him to his New York debut recital in May 2019 and in May 2020 at the Lyric Chamber Series at the Kosciusko Foundation in New York. In November 2020, he had his Orchestra Miami debut performing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto. In 2020 Mr. Salimdjanov won the first NSAL Piano and Strings Duo Competition and in 2019, he won Fourth place in the John Oliveira String Competition. Salimdjanov has performed as soloist with South Florida Symphony (during the recent Summer with the Symphony Chamber Music Series), Uzbekistan National Symphony Orchestra, State Conservatory Orchestra of Uzbekistan, Lynn Philharmonia and Orchestra Miami under the batons of Kuvanch Usmanov, Vladimir Neymer, Kamoliddin Urinbaev, Alan Paris, Guillermo Figueroa and Elaine Rinaldi. He performed as a soloist and as a chamber musician in Russia, Ukraine, Italy, Sweden, Singapore, Israel, and the United States.

In 2022, Salimdjanov was selected as one of seven violinists to participate at Geneva International String Academy in Switzerland. Salimdjanov was a concertmaster of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory orchestra and Lynn University orchestra as well as a substitute violinist at Naples Philharmonic Orchestra. He received his Bachelor of Music degree from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore where he studied with distinguished violinist Qian Zhou. Mr. Salimdjanov completed his professional performance certificate at Lynn University with renowned violinist Elmar Oliveira. Some of Salimdjanov’s students are prize winners of international competitions for young musicians.

Completed in the first half of 1938, Samuel Barber’s First Essay for Orchestra, Op. 12, is an orchestral work in one movement. Arturo Toscanini with the NBC Symphony Orchestra first performed it on November 5, 1938 in New York in a radio broadcast concert . The essay is now known as the First Essay for Orchestra after Barber wrote his Second Essay for Orchestra in 1942. He also wrote a Third Essay in 1978.

Edward Elgar’s Enigma, Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 36, is one of his best-known works that catapulted him to fame. Premiering in London in 1899, the work consists of 14 short musical portraits of several of the composer’s friends and family, and is considered to be one of the greatest compositions of the 19th century.

Upcoming SFSO concerts include Handel’s Messiah on December 3 and 4; Shostakovich, a Gottsch Ocklawaha World Premiere and Great Opera Arias on January 24, 25 and 28; Brahms, Sibelius and Berlioz on February 15 and 18, an all Dvořák program on March 22, 23 and 25 and season closer Rachmaninoff and Bruckner on April 26.

In honor of this milestone year and its new Miami home at the Michael Tilson Thomas Performance Hall at the New World Center (500 17th Street in Miami Beach), SFSO is celebrating with a special “Symphony Night OUT” at both Fort Lauderdale and Miami performances featuring a pre-concert Champagne reception (6:30 p.m. – Fort Lauderdale; 6 p.m. – Miami) and a 20% ticket discount (code: NIGHTOUT). The November 10 Miami Beach performance will be in partnership with SAVE LGBTQ, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promote, protect and defend equality for people in South Florida who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer.

Miami New Drama Proudly Presents ELIÁN, a World Premiere Play
The story we all know; told in a way we never imagined

Miami New Drama Artistic Director Michel Hausmann and Managing Director Nicholas Richberg are proud to announce the world premiere of ELIÁN, a new play by Cuban playwright Rogelio Martinez (Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, Guggenheim Award). ELIÁN is the first world premiere play kicking off Miami New Drama’s 2022-23 season. It will be playing at the Colony Theatre from Oct. 27 through Nov. 20, 2022, with opening night taking place on Saturday, Oct. 29.

In 1999, a young Cuban refugee, Elián Gonzalez, was found on the shores of Florida clinging to life. We know the story ends with a boy in a closet, a gun pointed at him; but few of us know how it got to that moment. With the help of key players, new information has been uncovered that paints a more complete and accurate picture of the story we all thought we knew. This fast-paced, energetic, and emotionally charged play, revisits an event that left its mark on our community and our country.

“ELIÁN is a story that is very personal to our city and resonated deeply with our Cuban-American community” said Michel Hausmann, Artistic Director. “It was an event that divided our community, had both national and international consequences, and helped define the 2000 elections which changed our global history. This work is an exploration of that moment from the perspective of some of the protagonists of this conflict and will reveal new information that the public has never been made aware of. It will be shocking, irreverent, and emotionally charged. We are thrilled to continue our collaboration with Rogelio, and I feel a great responsibility to be directing this story that is so close to our community.”

The cast for ELIÁN features Daniel Capote (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote) as Jorge Mas Santos, René Granado (The Real Havana Club’s Amparo) as Juan Miguel González, Mike Iveson (What the Constitution Means to Me, Netflix’s Orange is the New Black) as Roger Stone and Bill Clinton, Carmen Pelaez (Rum and Coke, Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, Fake) as Janet Reno and Ninoska Pérez, Andhy Mendez (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote, Celia & Fidel at Arena Stage) as Manny Diaz, Jonathan Nichols-Navarro (Miami New Drama’s The Cuban Vote, Anna in the Tropics at the Coconut Grove Playhouse) as Lazaro González, Ricardo Alarcón, and Joe Lieberman; Cristina Ortega (El Balsero, Miami Film Festival) as Marisleysis González, Caleb Scott (Miami New Drama’s 7 Deadly Sins, CBS’ George and Tammy) as Al Gore and Donato Dalrymple, and Gaby Tortoledo (Murder on the Orient Express at Actors’ Playhouse, Cabaret) as various roles.

The creative team features direction by Michel Hausmann, associate direction by Tatiana Pandiani, assistant direction by Jessica Farr, scenic design by Christopher and Justin Swader, costume design by Christopher Vergara, lighting design by Kirk Bookman, sound design and composition by Salomon Lerner, projection design by Yana Biryukova, wig design by Carol Raskin, puppet design by Paul Louis, production stage manager Naomi Zapata and assistant production stage manager Katelyn Bourke.

ELIÁN runs October 27 – November 20 at the Colony Theatre (1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach) with an opening night scheduled for October 29th. Performances are scheduled Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 pm and Sundays at 3 pm. Tickets ($45 – $70) are on sale at miaminewdrama.org or by calling Miami New Drama’s Box Office at (305) 674 -1040.

This Month’s Moon:

Join us under November’s Full Beaver Moon. This month’s moon is also known as the Frost Moon, as beavers build their winter dams by the light of the moon. In order to feel warm, safe and secure, beings must illuminate the things that are in darkness.

This month’s Full Moon will see a lunar eclipse, when the Earth moves between the sun and moon. This happens every six months, which gives us the perfect opportunity to set our intentions for the next six-months, as well as reflect on the previous.

The Beaver’s Moon comes to us in the sign of Taurus. Taurus, an Earth sign, has the ability to see things from a grounded, practical and realistic perspective.

Attendees can determine where they are at with their goals, what they want to gather more of, and what they are ready to let go of to prepare for the new moon cycle. Tune in using sound off noise cancelling headphones, focusing on the experience occurring solely in the body, powered by meaningful beats & sounds. To close the experience guests are invited to connect with one another while sipping on curated full moon elixirs.

Ticket includes:

Sunset Meditation & breath-work
Immersive sound bath
Mindful movement
Take home mantra card
Individual essential oil
Closing elixir
All experiences are outdoors at the 1 Beach Club. Please ensure you dress appropriately. Limited spots are available. The Full Moon experience begins promptly at 7pm. Check-in will take place on 24th street main entrance of Beach Club. In an effort to honor the space, entry to the event will not be allowed once the experience has started.

IlluminArts and The Bass Museum present Maria Martinez-Cañas Revelations
Thursday, 10/20/2022-, 06:30 pm-
The Bass Museum of Art
2100 Collins Ave.,
Miami Beach, Florida, 33139
Website
Cost: Free

In this musical performance, IlluminArts will explore the layers of meaning beneath, within and beyond the new works Maria Martinez-Cañas created for her exhibition, Absence Revealed at The Bass Museum. The works comprising Absence Revealed came about through two recent personal events in Martinez-Cañas’ life: the loss of her mother and the chance finding of her Miami home’s original wallpaper while renovating. The works highlight physical and emotional processes of excavation: the act of revealing and uncovering, as well as the surfacing of pain, loss and absence. Martinez-Cañas created these works by collaging items from her personal archive of found objects, including materials that the artist’s mother had taken from Cuba during her exile in 1960, actively engaging with the ideas of memory and loss. The musical program to be performed twice during the evening of October 20th for the Miami Beach Culture Crawl will include 10 new improvisations by internationally renowned cellist, Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, as well as songs by Tania Léon, Gilda Lyons, Hector Campos Parsi, Joseph Schwantner, Leo Brouwer, Heitor Villa-Lobos and more.

As a precursor to this event, world-renowned cellist Saeunn Thorsteinsdóttir will lead a free, community improvisation workshop on Monday, October 17 at 6:30 PM. This special workshop is open to all and no previous musical experience is necessary to participate. To find out more and register for this one-of-a-kind experience, visit illuminarts.org/events/improv

With a “breathtaking conflation of grace and grit” (Cleveland Classical), violinist Jennifer Frautschi makes her anticipated NWS debut. Many listeners believe Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Lark Ascending is among the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Inspired by a poem by George Meredith that describes a bird in flight, the work forms what the composer called a “pastoral romance for orchestra.” As a prolific composer who wrote for Harry Belafonte and Marvin Gaye, Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson finds a rich source of inspiration in the spiritual “Calvary” for his First String Quartet. Low brass claim the spotlight in Kevin Day’s sizzling Ignition.

South Florida’s highly anticipated South Beach Seafood Festival is back for its 10th anniversary with a celebration that is gearing up to be the biggest one yet. The festival features special programming, including a $10,000 chef prize and popular live music guests, that will raise the bar for one of the country’s leading seafood events. Taking place from Wednesday, October 19 through Saturday, October 22, the four-day festival is a curated culinary showcase that couples South Florida’s bounty of seafood with the region’s most notable chefs and restaurants. The South Beach Seafood Festival consists of four separate ticketed events taking place throughout the week. The festival begins on Wednesday, October 19th with “An Evening at Joe’s Stone Crab.” Next up, “Crabs, Slabs & Cabs,” takes place the following evening and offers a formal sit-down, five-course dinner highlighting ‘Surf n’ Turf’ reimagined by some of the Magic City’s leading chefs. The event is hosted by GOYA Foods’ Executive Chef Fernando Desa and includes participation from celebrated restaurateur and Pubbelly Sushi partner José Mendín; Fiola Miami’s Executive Chef Danny Ganem; and Meat Market Executive Chef and Owner Sean Brasel, among others. On Friday evening, the gloves come off as 16 of Miami’s top chefs go head-to-head in eight competitive seafood rounds during the annually sold out “Chef Showdown,” coined the ultimate beach bash on South Beach. To commemorate the festival’s 10-year anniversary, one participating chef with the most points of the night will take home a grand prize of $10,000. The series of nightly events builds up to the main celebration, the “South Beach Seafood Festival,” an all-day affair taking place on Saturday, October 22, showcasing a selection of pop-up-cafés by prominent South Florida restaurants, complimentary open bar stations, and packed with live musical performances, interactive experiences, and much more for guests to enjoy.

August’s Full Sturgeon Moon

About this event
This month’s moon:

Join us under August’s Full Moon named after the Sturgeon fish. It’s a popular time for Sturgeon to be caught in the Great Lakes and Lake Champlain. Though there were once plenty of Sturgeon in the Great Lakes, and many different varieties, they’re much more rare now. However, their legend lives on through this summer moon.

This summer Moon is in the sign of Aquarius and has a history rooted in nature, dating back to Native American legends from years gone by. This moon also signals that it’s a time for appreciation and gratitude for what you have and where you’ve come from.

–Sunset Meditation & breath-work
–Immersive sound bath
–Mindful movement
–Take home mantra card
–Individual essential oil
–Closing elixir

All experiences are outdoors at the 1 Beach Club. Please ensure you dress appropriately. Limited spots are available. The Full Moon experience begins promptly at 7:45pm. Check-in will take place on 24th street main entrance of Beach Club. In an effort to honor the space, entry to the event will not be allowed once the experience has started.
