7th Annual Key Biscayne Wine, Food & Silent Auction set for Nov. 11 presented by Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation Event offers opportunity to sample prestigious American wines, bid on exciting silent auction packages for a good cause

Fine American wines are center stage at the 7th Annual Key Biscayne Wine, Food & Silent Auction. Guests will taste wines, including several award winners, from prestigious wineries in Washington, Ohio and California, all competing for the title “Best in Show.” Shari Gherman, president of the American Fine Wine Competition and the Gold Medal Wine Tour, returns as the event’s wine director. Gherman’s palate “is one of the best I’ve ever seen,” according to Miami Herald wine writer Fred Tasker.

Presented by Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation, the evening’s activities at the golf club setting include an array of delicacies from outstanding Miami restaurants prepared to compliment the wines. A silent auction will feature more than 100 items, including high-end travel destinations, tickets to sporting events, an Asian cooking class for two, and gift certificates for gourmet and cultural experiences.

“This is a fun and relaxing evening to be enjoyed by everyone who shares an interest in wine, from educated enthusiasts to novices,” Ruben Weisson, chairman of the event and longtime Rotary of Key Biscayne member.

The wine tasting is from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $65 a person before Nov. 4 and for Rotary and participating charity members, and $75 at the door. For ticket purchase and a complete list of the wines to be tasted, visit keybiscaynewinefest.com. Complimentary valet parking will be provided.

For sponsorship opportunities, contact Weisson at 305-416-6440 or visit the event’s website at keybiscaynewinefest.com. The deadline is Oct. 28.

Proceeds will benefit the Rotary of Key Biscayne Foundation’s charitable giving program. Rotary will collaborate with Association of Retarded Citizens of South Florida to benefit the ACE Academy in Homestead. The elementary school for children with mental and physical disabilities in Florida City is located in one of the poorest communities in South Florida. The school will receive help in purchasing therapeutic equipment and materials to help 40 children in kindergarten to 5th grade gain better motor coordination in their daily living activities.

The event also will benefit Fundacion Manos del Sur, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Miami that provides education, health and nutrition services to underprivileged children Latin America. This year’s proceeds will help its Fundacion Nina Maria in Chia, Colombia, a poor area near Bogota, purchase needed medical equipment to treat children ages 0-18 who suffer from physical and mental disabilities, are victims of sexual abuse or abandonment. The co-sponsor club is Rotary Club of Bogota Chico, which provides oversight of the funds. Past recipients include the Diabetes Research Foundation and School for the Blind in Argentina. During its 35-year history the foundation has raised more than $530,000 through this event and its annual Key Biscayne Art Festival to fund charitable scholarships and grants.

The panel of judges include some of South Florida’s most discerning wine palates and wine educators: Chip Cassidy, hospitality management professor at Florida International University, Roberto Colombi of The Boca Raton Resort, Barry Alberts of Berries to Wine Inc., and Henry Barrow of La Bottega Wine Wisdom.

Cuisine with an international flavor will be prepared by area restaurants, including 900 Bistro Argentino, Costazul Peruvian restaurant, Old Lisbon, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Doggi’s & More, and The Plaza Italian restaurant.

Other sponsors of the event are Strategic Imports, Stefano’s Wine and Liquors, The Islander News, Key Biscayne and Brickell magazines, El Dorado Furniture, FJ Turbine Power, Key Pharmacy, KeyBiscayners.com, iVinoMiami.com, Lancaster & Reed, Arsicare Group, The Berenguer Group, Island Clinic at Key Biscayne, and Alvarez & Marsal.

All presented wines will be available for sale at the event through Stefano’s Wine and Liquors. The wine retailer of Key Biscayne will coordinate orders and delivery, donating 10 percent of proceeds to Rotary Club of Key Biscayne Foundation.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotels Of Miami And Fort Lauderdale Harness The Power Of The Moon Launch Full Moon Series For 2011/2012 Season

As the social season (and cooler weather) approaches, The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, South Beach and Fort Lauderdale will launch a new season of Full Moon gatherings, whose humble beginnings emanated from a history book describing Tequesta Indians naming Key Biscayne “Bischiyano,” which meant “favorite path of the rising moon” in their language.

Our romantic imaginations took off, and the Full Moon parties began. You have three soirees to choose from – all beautiful, with different, creative variations; some with mystical themes, one with a charitable component, and one with its own Constellation Concierge to point out the celestial sights in the heavens.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotels Of Miami And Fort Lauderdale Harness The Power Of The Moon Launch Full Moon Series For 2011/2012 Season

The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami Moonrise Dinner Dates:
2011: November 10; December 10
2012: January 9, February 7, March 8, April 6, May 6, June 4
When the Tequesta Indians first landed on Key Biscayne’s idyllic shore, they named it “Bischiyano” (“Favorite Path of the Rising Moon,”) for its breathtaking natural phenomenon. The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami was so inspired by the monthly occurrence, it created “Moonrise dinners” at signature restaurant Cioppino to transport guests to the mystical past. With an ever-changing four-course menu from Italy’s gastronomic regions created by master Italian Chef Ezio Gamba, tabletop telescopes, and a Constellation Concierge, which is a private guide to the night sky that helps guests pinpoint celestial objects, including stars, planets, comets, nebulae, star clusters and galaxies, this is one of Miami’s best kept secret dinners. Well-priced at $60 per person / $90 per person with wine pairings (or the option to order from the Cioppino menu). (305-365-4286)

While The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami island location lends itself to romantic dinners under the stars, The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach and The Ritz-Carlton, Fort Lauderdale create party atmospheres. Both soirees are open to the public, have reduce-priced valet parking, cocktail & appetizer specials and the city’s top DJs spinning.

Tequilier Heriberto Ovideo traveled to Amatitán, Mexico, believed to be the birthplace of Tequila, to nurture and select specially crafted double-barrel reposado Tequila from the House of Herradura distillery that would be reserved for The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne, Miami. The process began in 2010 with 100 percent blue Weber Agave tequila “resting” in toasted oak barrels for 11 months before maturing in a second hand-made barrel. Finally in April 2011, Ovideo journeyed to the distillery to taste and choose the best of three barrels awaiting his arrival. The preferred barrel captured smooth, light, earthy flavors and was hand-bottled at Casa Herradura.

Savor National Barbecue Month at Cantina Beach 5/22/11

Savor National Barbecue Month With Incomparable Mexican BBQ Found Nowhere Else
May 22
Cantina Beach
The Ritz-Carlton
Key Biscayne, Miami.

“Puebla is known for its Tacos Arabes,” says Chef Parlange. Never have I seen them anywhere in the U.S.”

Legend has it that 200 years ago a Lebanese family settled in Puebla, Mexico and brought the recipe for “doner kabobs” from their homeland. Over time, the specialty kabob incorporated Mexico’s spices and flavors, used soft flour shells instead of pita and became Tacos Arabes (also known as Tacos Orientales), famous in Puebla and rarely seen outside its city limits.” The recipes are carefully guarded to this day (similar to our stateside barbecue competitions), including those of Chef Andres Parlange, who created his own recipe using cilantro, cayenne peppers, chipotle peppers and cumin, which he serves at Cantina Beach, an oceanfront hideaway known for its Coastal Mexican cuisine.

May 22: To celebrate National Barbecue Month, Chef Andres Parlange is creating Tacos Arabes with a Barbecue Flair. He starts with finest prime ground beef and New York cut strip loin, slowly barbecues it on a fire spit outside the oceanfront Cantina Beach, adds his own chipotle barbecue sauce, carves it to order and serves it with tortillas, smoked jalapeno sauce, cilantro and onions ($16).

The city’s only oceanfront Coastal Mexican restaurant presents innovative menu additions and daily specials inspired by Mexico’s culinary regions and created by Chiapas, Mexico-native Chef de Cuisine, Andres Parlange. Vibrant hues of deep red and indigo blue alongside Mexican accents create a special hideaway feel at the large, thatched roof restaurant. Plush lounges, tiki torches and a fire pit complement the natural oceanfront setting, which is so captivating in its beauty that the island’s first settlers named the location, “favorite path of the rising moon.” Tequilier (tequila specialist trained in Mexico’s Agave growing regions) Heriberto Ovideo offers recommendations on the restaurants 85 premium tequila selection, the largest 100 percent Agave tequila collection in Miami.

Photographs of Cinco De Mayo at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne on 5/5/11

Cinco De Mayo at The Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne on Thursday, May 5, 2011.  We had complimentary Guacamole, prepare fresh right there and it was awesome.  We also had Mar Azul tequila samplings with flavors such as pomegranate, almond, coffee, banana, coconut and chocolate. My favorite was the chocolate and the chocolate mixed with the banana, so yummy.

‘Energy Revolution’ will consist of a dynamic panel of energy experts and industry leaders that will look specifically at South Florida to assess the current energy mix, propose ideal and reachable goals for the future, and offer a road map on how Floridians can best reach the goals proposed.

Panelists will discuss how the modernization of the nation’s electrical grid will help Americans be more energy efficient and assist in the transition from a reliance on fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. The Energy Smart Miami initiative will serve as a local example of a tool that is being used to help lead the nation towards a sustainable energy future.

Format
One of the only combined 12-day tennis event on the ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tour calendars, the Sony Ericsson Open features the world’s top-ranked pros – 96 men and 96 women – in singles competition, and 32 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams in doubles action.

History
On August 29, 2006, Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications announced the signing of a four year contract to become the title sponsor of the Sony Ericsson Open. With $9 million in prize money the Sony Ericsson Open is currently the largest tournament in the world with Title Sponsorship. When Butch Buchholz established the event in 1985, it marked the first time in 56 years that a new two-week tournament featuring men and women was launched. Located in Delray Beach (Laver’s International Tennis Center) in 1985 and Boca Raton (Boca West) in 1986, the tournament found a permanent home in 1987 on Miami’s Key Biscayne. In 1994, Miami-Dade County christened the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, a 30-acre expanse that is transformed each year from a public tennis facility into a full-fledged festival for the Sony Ericsson Open. The Sony Ericsson Open, considered one of the most prestigious titles in professional tennis, has been awarded “Tournament of the Year” by the ATP in eight of the last 10 years. In 2004 the event was also named “Tournament of the Year” by the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. In 1999, the tournament was purchased by IMG.

Tickets (305) 442-3367 or www.SonyEricssonOpen.com

Single-session tickets for all 24 sessions of the 2010 Sony Ericsson Open are on sale now. Fans can purchase tickets by calling the Sony Ericsson Open Ticket Office at (305) 442-3367 or by going online at www.sonyericssonopen.com.

The 26th edition of the Sony Ericsson Open is scheduled for March 22-April 4 and will once again feature the top-96 players on both ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Tours competing at the Crandon Park Tennis Center for one of the most prestigious titles in tennis.

Men’s and women’s qualifying will start on Monday, March 22 with a select number of women’s opening round main draw matches taking place on Tuesday, March 23. Men’s main draw action kicks-off on Wednesday, March 24.

Additionally, the Tuesday women’s main draw start means that women’s seeded players will begin play on Thursday, March 25 rather than the traditional Friday start.

But the Sony Ericsson Open is more than just tennis, it is a total entertainment experience. High fashion, fine food, fabulous shopping and celebrity musical performances have made the tournament the most glamorous on tour.

Come see why huge crowds as well as the biggest names in music, entertainment and sports like Owen Wilson, Eliza Dushku, Meagan Good, Adrien Brody, Shakira, Paulina Rubio, Alejandro Sanz, Enrique Inglesias, Anna Kournikova, Dwyane Wade, Terrell Owens and Helio Castroneves visit the Sony Ericsson Open each spring.

Don’t miss any of the action. Secure your seats for 2010 and watch the best players in the world including Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams and Venus Williams as they battle on the purple courts for one of the most coveted trophies on tour.

In addition to the single-session tickets, the Sony Ericsson Open also has Ticket Packages and Vacation Packages available to suit everyone’s needs.

You can call the Sony Ericsson Open ticket office at 305-442-3367 or email the ticket office at tickets@imgworld.com for more information.

ABOUT THE SONY ERICSSON OPEN: The 2010 Sony Ericsson Open will be played March 24-April 4 at the Tennis Center at Crandon Park in Miami. The 12-day combined event, founded by Butch Buchholz in 1985, is owned and operated by IMG. The Sony Ericsson Open is one of nine ATP Masters Series events on the ATP calendar, a Premier Mandatory event on the Sony Ericsson WTA TOUR calendar, and features the top men’s and women’s tennis players in the world. In 2009 British standout Andy Murray defeated Novak Djokovic for his first Sony Ericsson Open title, while rising Belarusian star Victoria Azarenka knocked off Serena Williams to capture her first title in Miami. of the $5 Entrance Fee
Date: Saturday, November 14, 2009
Time: noon
Location: Jimbo’s Shrimp Shack
Suggestion: Join your fellow friends of Jimbo volunteers in the clean up effort.
The city of Miami has stopped charging a fee of $5 to every car that passes the toll gate on Virginia Key on the way to Jimbo’s.
Join the celebration on Saturday, November 14, 2009 at noon at Jimbo’s!
To All Friends of Jimbo,
The city has agreed to rescind the $5 fee (penalty) on Jimbo’s customers. If you pay the $5 fee at the toll booth, have your receipt signed at Jimbo’s for a full refund when you exit.
Send an email to city officials thanking them for making this change, which was clearly unfair to Jimbo.
Now the city is pressuring Jimbo to keep the place clean and neat, so we’re all lending a hand to get rid of some of the refuse and trash.
Thank you!
Pass the word to friends of Jimbo. We’ll see you all there.

Kyle Crossland

Kyle CrosslandÕs music has recently been drawing the attention of students from the University of Miami. As a student singer-songwriter from the university, KyleÕs acoustic-rock style has been compared to that of John Mayer and Jack Johnson. His energetic performances and catchy up-beat songs are almost magnetic to whoever happens to be listening. From a young age, Kyle knew that somehow his life needed to incorporate music. He has been singing for as long as he can remember, and growing-up he idolized artists like James Taylor and the Beach Boys. His love for singing brought him to Dr. Phiillips a Magnet High School which focused on choral studies. It was in his junior year of high school when Kyle first picked up a guitar and started writing songs.

The KeyRats, Key Biscayne`s finest
On December 31, 2003, The Keyrats had been commissioned to play for a crowd approaching 1,000 people from the balcony of a Key Biscayne residence overlooking the Miami bay. The performance was a success, and shortly thereafter The Keyrats began receiving phone calls from local promoters interested in booking the band. Since then, The Keyrats have played at multiple popular venues in Miami including Oxygen Lounge, Bolero, Honey, Bayside Hut, Transit Lounge, Flavour, Grove Isle, CefaloÕs and the University of Miami. Other notable venues include Jewells, Boardwalk Tavern, B.E.D., and MiamiÕs Mega Club, Mansion. The Keyrats have evolved into a dynamic four piece band consisting of drums, bass, guitars and two vocalists. On some nights they even feature special guests on the keyboard, timbales, saxophone, and a trombone/Trumpet horn section.

Third time was the charm for North Carolina native Adam Fields at Board Up™ Miami, South Florida’s premiere wakeboard festival April 23-25, 2009 in Miami, FL. In a mild upset with an exciting finish, amid mildly windy condition, Fields bested the final field of 10 professional and amateur riders to win the men’s crown at the fourth annual wakeboard festival. Over 60 amateur riders entered the pro-am competition itching for a chance to take on nearly 20 pro men and women wakeboarders and a chance at a combined prize purse of over $10,000.

An international group of riders that featured three Aussies and two Kiwis (from New Zealand) provided excitement from the preliminaries, including Daniel Watkins, who finished fourth, but closed out his opening round ride with a rail slide along the starting dock, and move that wasn’t scored, but certainly thrilled the crowd.

A crowd of 4,000 witnessed the final runs on both the pro men and pro women side, with the final results featuring Adam Fields as champion in his third appearance at the event defeating Dean Smith (2nd overall), and Jeff Weatherall (3rd overall). On the women’s side, as was expected, it was a case of sibling rivalry, just like tennis has the Williams’ sisters consistently vying for titles, wakeboarding has the Hoffman’s, and at this year’s Board Up™ Miami, big sister Raequel still had a few more tricks than her younger sibling Shawna who finished . Tennessee native Corrie Dyer finished 3rd.

Inclusive of this year’s festival was a nearly 4,000 square foot skate park that featured the Assailant and Amaxon Clothing best trick contest where Miami local D’Andre Pendergrass took home the $500 cash prize.

The festival atmosphere was in full effect with live musical performances by Kyle Crossland, The Key Rats, Streetkind, and headliner Araka, all of whom rocked the crowd. There was certainly some dazzle with two swim suit fashion shows that featured the girls from The House of Jackie Brown, and the girls of microkitten.com, me-ow!

For the participant sporting event enthusiast, Saturday morning kicked off the day with the Nike Swim Miami, an open water swimming competition that had over 700 athletes competing in a 10K (the swim marathon), 5K, and mile swim that saw among others, multiple time USA Olympian and 8-time Olympic medalist Gary Hall Jr compete in the mile. Israeli National Team Member, Michael Demetriev was the overall 10K swim champion in a blazing time of 2 hours and 2 minutes.

For additional information and complete results visit the event website @ www.boardup.net (for wakeboarding) and www.miamisportsinternational.com (for the open water swim)
