In the chaotic decade following the Civil War, a group of young ex-slaves in Nashville, Tennessee, set out on a mission to save their financially troubled school by giving concerts. Traveling first through cities in the North, then on to venues across Europe, the Jubilee Singers introduced audiences to the power of spirituals—religious anthems of slavery. Driven to physical collapse and even death, the singers proved more successful —and more inspirational—than anyone could have imagined. Today, performing nationally at venues like the Apollo Theater, this a cappella group stands on the shoulders of the original Jubilee Singers, continuing their legacy of performing Negro spirituals.

The Actor’s Gang, the Los-Angeles based experimental theater company founded by actor/director Tim Robbins (Bull Durham, Shawshank Redemption) brings Moléire’s quick-witted comedy Tartuffe.

“Based on the new and freer translation of David Ball — is a terrific blend of the sacred and the profane as it blends some of the traditional commedia dell’arte elements, such as masks, with the zany antics of the Marx Brothers. And still Moliere’s message about the hypocrisy of overly religious piety rings loud and clear for all ages and times, including our own” – The Hollywood Reporter

The nine piece Brooklyn-based band Red Baraat team up with South Florida’s Latin jammers the Spam Allstars for a thrilling evening of world music that will have audiences musically trotting the globe and dancing in the aisles. The Village Voice calls Red Baraat “…a fiery blend of raucous Indian bhangra and funky New Orleans brass. The result, needless to say, is completely riotous, a blustery groove machine…”

Spam Allstars blend improvisational electronic elements and turntables with Latin, funk, hip hop and dub to create what they call an electronic descarga.  It’s not a known genre.  It’s hard to describe.  It attracts many types of people. But as they look out and see people dancing salsa, next to break-dancers, and festival-goers driving for hours to catch a show — they know something very special is going on.
