LEAP Celebrates 10 Years of Second Chances for Incarcerated Women!

NPR’s James Judd to Emcee the fundraising and awareness-building event, with musical performances by Jazz Singers Leesa Richards and Brenda Alford.

LEAP (Ladies Empowerment and Action Program), the only reentry program in Miami-Dade County dedicated exclusively to women transitioning from prison, hosts the Second Chance Soiree on Sept. 26, 2019, from 6-10 p.m. at the Coral Gables Congregational Church. The festive event, which marks the 10th anniversary for LEAP, will draw attention to the serious plight of formerly incarcerated women reintegrating into society through songs and stories of compassion. Tickets are available now, and the event is open to the public.

During the event, sponsors and guests will also enjoy a cocktail reception, elegant hors d’ oeuvres, mixed media installation, and participate in a silent auction. All proceeds and donations from the Second Chance Soiree go towards LEAP’s in-prison education programming, post-release support services, and community engagement and advocacy efforts.

LEAP is distinctive, and its transformative services favorably impact communities. Women regain their footing through the organization’s entrepreneurship, employability, life skills, and trauma-informed substance abuse classes. Its secular programming allows for total diversity and inclusivity among all faiths. Since launching in 2009, LEAP has been successful in breaking the cycle of recidivism — less than five percent of LEAP graduates return to prison, in comparison with the national average in excess of 50 percent. Lowering recidivism rates translates into significant taxpayer savings, while creating safer and more stable neighborhoods.

In the Park (1962), 14 minutes, Directed by Orlando Jiménez-Leal
In the Park, is a trip to the past. The year is 1962. The subject, a Sunday day in Bay Front Park, Miami, when the world was still innocent. The hidden camera, the free cinema, allows us to observe from a distance, to be voyeurs without being discovered. We see young and old in a sweet-and-sour situation, which gives the viewer a strange nostalgic feeling.
New Town Utopia (2017), 80 minutes, Directed by Christopher Ian Smith
A journey of memory, place, and performance, New Town Utopia is a documentary feature about utopian dreams and concrete realities—the challenging, funny, and sometimes tragic story of the British new town of Basildon, Essex. Facing austerity, adversity and personal battles the artists, musicians, and poets of Basildon are individuals driven by their creative spirit to improve their community through art, poetry, music, and some rather angry puppets. New Town Utopia features Oscar-winning actor Jim Broadbent (Iris, Topsy-Turvy, Moulin Rouge) as the voice of Lewis Silkin MP.

Coral Gables, FL- Cernuda Arte is pleased to present a stunning solo exhibition of works by Cuban-born artist, Vicente Hernández. Vicente Hernández: To Leave, or Not To Live, That Is The Question. Recent Works of Flight and Despair,
Opening Reception – Friday, August 2nd, from 6-9 pm at Cernuda Arte. The show will place a thematic focus on massive migrations of Cuban people, a contentious topic which runs centrally through the artist’s work.

While this new gathering marks the artist’s third solo show on American soil, Hernández still works from within the island of Cuba, vividly depicting the plight of its youth in their search for a better life of opportunities and freedoms.
His paintings, crafted with the vocabulary of magic realism, expose the absurdity of reality in Cuba and reinforce the intensity of hope of its people. The twenty-two canvases on view emphatically reflect a necessary voice and a true contrarian spirit.

Blurring the fluid boundaries between present and future, documentary and fiction, Paths Through Utopias is a feature-length utopian road movie exploring a post-capitalist Europe. Shot during a seven-month journey in 2008, visiting ten utopian experiments—from the direct-action Climate Camp set up illegally beside Heathrow airport to a hamlet squatted by French art punks, from occupied self-managed Serbian factories to a free-love commune in an ex Stasi base—this magic-realist travelogue transports us to a parallel universe where money is worthless and private property has been abolished.

Money, power, politics, drugs, scandal, and fast cars. Sheena M. Joyce and Don Argott’s Framing John DeLorean recounts — for the first time — the extraordinary life and legend of the controversial automaker, from his meteoric rise through the ranks of General Motors, his obsessive quest to build a sports car that would conquer the world, and his shocking fall from grace on charges of cocaine trafficking. Interweaving a treasure trove of archive footage with dramatic vignettes starring Alec Baldwin, Framing John DeLorean is a gripping look at a man who gambled everything in pursuit of the American Dream.

With an all-star cast of chefs who specialize in whole animal cooking paired with farmers responsibly raising delicious heritage breed pigs, Cochon555 returns to Miami on Sunday, May 19th. This year’s competing chefs include Jorgie Ramos of BARLEY; Karla Hoyos of The Bazaar by Jose Andres; Daniel Bouza of PokéBao; Fernando Desa of Goya; and Jimmy Lebron of 27 Restaurant & Bar.
One week before the event, each chef will receive a 200-pound heritage breed pig sustainably sourced from a family farm to start preparing their six pork dishes for the event. To win the friendly competition for a cause, the chef’s menu must woo 14 celebrity judges with their “Judge’s Plate” scored on utilization, technique, overall flavor, and be voted “Best Bite of the Day” by guests. The winning “Prince or Princess of Pork” in Miami will advance to the national finale, Grand Cochon, a head-to-tail, winner-take-all showdown for the ultimate crown in Chicago on September 15, 2019.

Each event also features an educational whole animal butchery program called the Pop-Up Butcher Shop and a charitable Silent Auction. This year’s headlining all-star butcher will be Andres Barrientos of Miami Smokers. Additionally, running in tandem are two satellite beverage competitions to complement the whole-animal tilt; Punch Kings presented by El Tesoro Tequila, a whole bottle, large-format spirit competition featuring five top barkeeps in a hand-crafted punch challenge and Somm Smackdown, a face-off of five top sommeliers pairing the best wine with heritage pig.

The whole event is in support of Piggy Bank, a start-up farm in Missouri that serves as a kickstarter for new family farms and a safety net for those in the wake of disaster (flood, fire and disease). At its core, Cochon555 aims to create moments of inspiration, and to engender discussion and action – to buy, to cook, shop and donate in the name of safe, honest, and delicious food. The Experimental City is a documentary about the Minnesota Experimental City project, a futuristic attempt to solve urban problems by creating a full-size city from scratch in the isolated woods of northern Minnesota. At the heart of the story is renowned scientist, inventor, and comic-strip author, Athelstan Spilhaus, who dreams of a new kind of planned city—a truly experimental city that continuously changes to find workable urban solutions. This new city would employ the newest technologies in communications, transport, pollution control, energy supply—even large-scale domed enclosure—in an attempt to create more livable cities for the twenty-first century. It was a compelling vision, with powerful backers, hundreds of experts, and its own state agency. But not everyone fell in line with this newfangled vision for the future.

Winner of the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and Tony Award for “Best Play,” all elements come invigoratingly together like clockwork in John Patrick Shanley’s provocative play Doubt, A Parable, a gripping story of suspicion cast on a priest’s behavior that is less about scandal than about fascinatingly nuanced questions of moral certainty. Doubt, A Parable is blunt yet subtle, manipulative but full of empathy for all sides, and a powerful drama that represents the eloquent and provocative investigation of truth and consequences.

NAMI Miami-Dade County expects to attract thousands of people and seat close to 800 people at the 4th Annual Reel Minds Miami Mental Health Film Festival at the University of Miami’s Donna E. Shalala Center on Sunday, May 19, 2019 from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. This year’s festival will showcase six short films. The narratives behind these films will share a range of life experiences meant to inspire, heal, and empower people. Following each short film, an individual with a lived experience of a mental health challenge will speak on the films’ topic for a few minutes providing further insight about the message behind each film.

This year’s lineup is comprised of films from a variety of talented directors, including a member of the International Cinematographers Guild, a multi-award-winning actor and Navy Veteran, and an award-winning filmmaker. The six films were chosen out of almost 200 submissions based on their compelling storytelling and way of educating and dispelling the myth behind mental illness. Submitted films were judged by film makers, clinicians, high school and college students, individuals with mental illness and their family members.

The 2019 lineup includes Terms of Us by director, writer, producer Roberto Sanchez, a Cuban born, Miami raised Navy Veteran who has a recurring role on Queen of the South. Additionally, Roberto will be speaking at the festival; Baby Steps from Los Angeles director, Eric Dyson; Misdirection by Carly Usdin, a University of Central Florida graduate with Miami ties, now an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles; Reverie by Nick Markham; Saving Billy by Vickie Adams; and UkeLayla, directed and produced by a team of recent Miamians and graduates from the University of Central Florida.

“Films are a compelling storytelling form that connects with our deepest sensibilities, and research suggests that film festivals have a positive impact on stigma and recovery in mental illness. That’s why for the fourth consecutive year, NAMI Miami-Dade is showcasing a curated list of short films inspired by the lives of those who have been affected by mental illness,” says Kathryn Coppola, Executive Director at NAMI Miami. “Together, we can spark the awareness that makes the difference in our society.” NAMI Miami’s goal is to “end the silence” and to start the conversation about mental health proving that recovery is possible.

Come along on their incredible journey to the ends of the airwaves – filled with laughter, soaring emotion and roof-raising rock ‘n’ roll. Winner of four 2010 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Memphis features a Tony-winning book by Joe DiPietro and a Tony-winning original score with music by Bon Jovi founding member David Bryan.

Don’t miss this limited engagement at the Miracle Theatre!

Books & Books’ Coral Gables Gallery Night to Debut New Exhibit
Friday, November 2, 2018
South Florida Artist Evan J. Alexander Presents Abstract Coordinates 30.40

Coral Gables, Florida (October 8, 2018) – The gallery exhibition in November, Abstract Coordinates 30.40, features the work of Florida native, Evan J. Alexander. Comprised of original oil and acrylic paintings the art on display was inspired by the painterly quality of satellite imagery. Evan has focused on a controlled form of abstraction in the paintings made for this exhibition. He navigated certain landscapes to find compositions that aligned with the conventions of his prior work. This furthers the perpetual incorporation of advanced technologies within the traditional medium of oil painting.
Continuing but reorienting landscape painting into a two-dimensional topographical survey aligns with the sensibilities of painting on a two-dimensional surface. This concept defies conventional painting practices by forcing an unnatural view from above as an alternative form of landscape painting. The view from above is foreign to most given our tendencies to observe what is around us rather than what is below.

Evan chose landscapes from Syria seeking a connection with one of his ancestral homelands. Also, as another form of monitoring the transformation of the earth’s surface acknowledging the human interference. With most of the frustrating and troubling recent news regarding Syria, Evan strives to remind viewers of the natural beauty within the turmoil and humanitarian strife.

About Evan J. Alexander:
Evan J. Alexander is a multimedia artist inspired by the random occurrences in the universe. His style lacks the typical identifying qualities across his body of work. Evan might make an oil painting of a seagull he saw on the street and the next day he might create a digital collage of abstract components. Evan was born and raised in South Florida, studied at the University of Miami and ultimately completed his BFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Guests will enjoy incredible performances from Guitars Over Guns mentors, alumni and special guests, not to mention a selection of award-wi

nning eats and beverages from some of Miami’s hottest restaurants and an unbelievable silent auction featuring 5-star trips, experiences, fine art and so much more. The evening will be emceed by CBS Miami news personality Jim Berry, and will feature a retrospective look at the organization’s 10 years of empowering Miami-Dade youth through music and mentorship.

Last year with the community’s support, Guitars Over Guns raised $165,000 to support our arts-based mentoring programs for Miami’s at-risk youth. With these funds, over 700 kids are being served at 14 sites through the Summer of 2018, bringing the total to over 2,500 youth served over the last 9 years. This year, our goal is to raise $300,000, allowing Guitars Over Guns to transform the futures of 500 additional students living in Miami-Dade County’s most disadvantaged communities.

This event celebrates Guitars Over Guns’ 10 years of of making music and changing lives. Our programs offer students from disadvantaged backgrounds a powerful combination of music education and mentorship with professional musicians to help them overcome hardship, find their voice and reach their potential as tomorrow’s leaders. Guitars Over Guns creates safe spaces for youth to express themselves through music and empowers them to make positive choices at school, at home and in their communities. Cuts in funding for the arts and after-school programs mean our students have fewer opportunities than ever, and as the news reports of youth violence continue to pour in, we are reminded all too often that this type of work has never been more important.

Purchase a ticket or become a sponsor, and be part of a movement that empowers deserving youth in our community to create, succeed and thrive! Learn more about Guitars Over Guns at www.guitarsoverguns.org.

CGAC presents a brand new 70mm print of 2001: A Space Odyssey to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Stanley Kubrick’s landmark film. Overseen by Christopher Nolan, “this 70mm print was struck from new printing elements made from the original camera negative. This is a true photochemical film recreation. There are no digital tricks, remastered effects, or revisionist edits. This is the unrestored film – that recreates the cinematic event that audiences experienced fifty years ago.”

‘Hacking School Culture: Designing Compassionate Classrooms’ was written by Ellen Feig Gray, a Miami positive psychology practitioner, researcher, and parent coach, and Angela Stockman, a professional learning facilitator and educational consultant based in New York.

As colleagues and parents who have witnessed an atmosphere of heightened anxiety among students, teachers and parents across the country, Ellen and Angela came to the realization that, “bullying prevention and character building programs, while deepening our awareness of how today’s kids struggle and how we might help, are not enough to create school cultures where students and staff flourish.”

The program will begin with a meet and greet session with the authors, followed by a one-hour interactive workshop starting promptly at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. A book signing and a question and answer session continues until 2:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Set in Dublin, ONCE is the smash-hit musical that has captured hearts around the world with its touching love story, glorious music and irresistible humor. The story follows a Dublin street musician who’s about to give up on his dream when a beautiful young woman takes a sudden interest in his haunting love songs. There’s no mistaking the chemistry between them. As it begins to grow, his music soars to powerful, new heights. Theirs is an unlikely connection, though, that turns out to be deeper and more complex than other everyday romances. ONCE is an unforgettable story about going for one’s dreams and the power of music to connect us all.

Actors’ Playhouse has transformed its Mainstage theatre into a Dublin bar for this much-anticipated production. Featuring Miami’s only onstage bar, audience members are invited to join in a lively music session with the cast before the show while enjoying a drink onstage in our authentic Irish pub. Doors open 30 minutes prior to showtime.

All of the music in ONCE is played live on stage by an extraordinary cast of actor-musicians. Between them, the 12 actors play 30 instruments during each performance, including guitar, cajon, melodica, harmonica, piano, violin, castanets, bass guitar, ukulele, mandolin, banjo, tambourine, drums, acccordion and cello. The company’s production includes members from the original Broadway cast as well as several actors who have performed the show regionally.

Do Not Resist is an urgent documentary that explores the militarization of local police departments—in their tactics, training, and acquisition of equipment—since 9/11. With unprecedented access to police conventions, equipment expos, and officers themselves, filmmaker Craig Atkinson, the son of a SWAT team member, crafts an eye-popping nonpartisan look at the changing face of law enforcement in America. This film merges the arts with contemporary and critical social issues in the U.S. today. Its creators see the film as an opportunity to create dialogue among criminal and social-justice advocates, policy makers, police leadership, and the public. In short, they see this film as a tool for education, discussion, planning, and action towards police reform in our communities.

As Cotopaxi spews ash, issuing an eerie penumbra over Quito and threatening to erupt, a young woman confronts dormant familial conflicts in Ecuadorian writer-director Juan Sebastián Jacome’s poignant new drama.
Desperate for a place to store her things as volcanic disaster looms, Caridad turns to her long-estranged Galo father for help. Galo abandoned Caridad’s mother long ago and is eager to make amends, but questions concerning the nature of his transgressions linger, straining communication between father and daughter and casting grave doubts over the possibility of reconciliation.
Alternating between the stunning spectacle of Cotopaxi and the uneasy intimacy of Caridad and Galo’s reunion, Cenizas deftly balances the grandiose and the personal, juxtaposing events beyond our control with matters that can only be resolved by having the courage to break the silence and reach out.

Thursday, 02/22/2018 – 07:00 pm –
Bill Cosford Cinema
5030 Brunson Dr,
Coral Gables, Florida 33146

Cost: Free

From Nowhere tells the story of three high-school students who are struggling with the issues that trouble all teenagers, but, in addition, these three have another issue which causes them constant concern. They are illegal aliens. They know that at any time, should someone require documentation from them, they could end up deported back to countries they don’t know and have never spent any time in. These children are really “from nowhere.” Each one wants to get papers but has to navigate the American legal system to do so. The lawyer who wants to help them makes it clear that the easiest way to obtain legal documentation is to apply for political asylum by “coming up with” some form of threat or abuse that they or their parents are afraid of if they are forced to return to their homelands. The wrenching drama was the winner of the Narrative Spotlight Audience Award at this year’s SXSW Film Festival. The film also won the Audience Award and the jury-awarded Special Mention prize at the Champs-Elysees Film Festival.
The Living Together Film Series, a program of films spread across ten nights, will be screened on selected Thursdays from September 2017 to April 2018 at MDC’s Tower Theater and at The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami. Living Together’s documentary and fiction films survey the dizzying political landscape of contemporary American cinema.
