NWM2013/SPRING BREAK presents Planetarium KRAUTROCK: a Multimedia Audio Visual Timeline. Artist Kevin Arrow and Musician Romulo Del Castillo present an audio and visual experience on Krautrock, an umbrella term for the rock and electronic experimental music that originated in Germany in the late 1960s. The term is a result of the English-speaking world’s reception of the music at the time and not a reference to any one particular scene, style, or movement, as many who came to be known as krautrock artists were not familiar with one another.

Largely divorced from the traditional blues and rock & roll influences of British and American rock music up to that time, the period contributed to the evolution of electronic dance and ambient music as well as the birth of post-punk, alternative rock and New Age music. Key artists associated with the tag include Can, Amon Düül II, Ash Ra Tempel, Faust, Popol Vuh, Cluster, Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, Neu!, and Kraftwerk.

This presentation will be accompanied by the technical support of Mark Bennett, Robert Cruz, Dylan Römer and Barron Sherer.

Krautrock at the Planetarium is presented by Miami Art Museum and Miami Science Museum in collaboration with SPRING BREAK as part of MAM’s New Work Miami 2013 exhibition.

Miami Science Museum, 3280 South Miami Avenue, Miami, FL 33129. $8, MAM and Miami Science Museum members free. #NWM2013

After much success with two screenings and thousands of views Eenie Meenie Miney Moe, caught Pepe Billete’s attention. He sets out to support by hosting the final screening, Pepe Billete supports local filmmakers and is eager to bring #305pride. The unrated version will be shown one last time in Miami before making its way around film festivals nationwide.

Eenie Meenie Miney Moe director Jokes Yanes announces the final screening for Miami International Film Festivals favorite flick. After much success with two screenings and thousands of views Eenie Meenie Miney Moe’s unrated version will be shown one last time in Miami, before making its way around film festivals nationwide. “We believe it’s important to show the film to our community as they are our #1 supporters.” Said Jokes Yanes “

The film is based on Raul, a tow truck driver in Miami Beach, who wants to make money and make it fast. He has the perfect tool to open the doors to any car in Miami. Each car holds a prize; he soon learns that every reward has its consequences.

The film is brought to life by Miami Locals: Andres Dominguez, who plays the main character, tow truck driver Raul, he also starred in Magic City Memoirs. J. Bishop who not only plays the role of Vlad the mafia man eager to take on the next scam is also the co writer of the flick. Oscar Torre is Jimmy the club owner who likes to party and party with no restrictions; he has also graced Hollywood films, Counterpunch & The Hangover 3. Belkys Galvez plays Nikki, Miami’s sweetheart who loves the beach and its lifestyle. The actress has also worked RPM Miami. Ky-Mani Marley plays Tommy, Raul’s partner in crime, he is also known for acting in Shottas. The young and the restless star David Lago plays Marco the hardworking household provider looking for a break. The film also welcomes new comers Joanna Galis Menendez, who plays Monique, Kristine Cecelia, who stars as Lisa, the lady with all the street connections and Crystal Cubria, who plays Dee Dee. Each character is a true delineation of Miami’s behavior giving viewers the chance to relate to the film firsthand.

Eenie Meenie Miney Moe is a true testament to the current generation in Miami. The film is brutally honest, unleashing the consequences of the hustle and bustle.

“Miami is a young city that hasn’t really had a chance at its own identity in film” says Miami born and raised writer/director Jokes. “I’ve always wanted to create an authentic film in Miami, so the best way to do that is just to get the real thing; we are as authentic as it gets with local talent and local production” said Jokes Yanes

Photographs of Sprung! Spring Beer Festival 3/9/2013

Beer festivals are a lot like open-minded college girls & South Beach guys — they can go either way. Sometimes they blow (as did a recent local beer festival that shall remain nameless) – or as is the case with, Sprung! Spring Beer Festival, they can kick major ass. This past Saturday, March 9th Coconut Grove’s Peacock Park hosted 150 spring and summer craft beers from well-known, talented breweries like Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewery, Kona, Magic Hat, Shiner, Shipyard and many more. We love to support small businesses as well as people doing what they are truly passionate about. That is why we were very pleased to see Sprung! supporting the very impressive local craft beer movement here in South Florida. Continue reading “Photographs of Sprung! [Description]

It’s the Grove the way the Grove once was. The 15th annual celebration of the original Gifford Lane Art Stroll will burst into colors, smiles, and rocking music along one usually sleepy little block of Gifford Lane between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block) on Sunday, March 3rd from 12 noon to five o’clock.

The event features more than seventy visual artists displaying their works on the fences and in the front yards along the demure little lane, including a number of the finest artists in the region.

Once again this year, all of the participating artists at the Art Stroll will be giving a percentage of their sales to two Grove charities—this percentage will be added to contributions made by the public and neighbors living on the block. The two benefiting Grove charities are the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban’s Day Care Center in the Village West. Each year, the Art Stroll donates 100% of the proceeds to the charities. More than $35,000 has been contributed to Grove charities since the Art Stroll began.

Brady Jacob, AKA Skinny Hendrix, is a DJ/Producer from Miami, Florida that is quickly turning heads in the EDM world. His fresh blend of electro, dubstep, moombah, trap, and more combined with his energetic and unfettered stage presence keeps dance floors in a frenzy all night long.

After graduating from the University of Miami with a major in Entrepreneurship, Skinny immediately focused his energy towards his passion for electronic dance music. While attending Scratch DJ Academy, his natural talent behind the turntables instantly garnered attention from his professors and colleagues. He then took to the road on a festival-hopping journey that culminated in an epic DJ set on stage at Bonnaroo. Now back in Miami, the buzz around Skinny Hendrix continues to swell each time he spins for a new crowd.

WARP9

It has since evolved through several different phases, taking many turns over the light years as they have shared in all sorts of musical adventures. Finally landing in Miami, Warp9 has united forces to decode the information beamed here from a distant star and deliver it to you through their music: spaced-out grooves served with a dose of galactic funk that will navigate you into uncharted territories.

Warp9 consists of Adam, a multi-instrumentalist and graduate from Berklee College of Music; and Jeff, an experienced controllerist and veteran DJ of over 12 years. When performing live, they incorporate a unique blend of live guitars, synths, DSP and DJ’ing. Warp9 has just released their first EP on JPod The Beat Chef’s label “Swing Set Sounds”. Stay Tuned!

Free admissionf for Children 12 and under, Metrorail Golden Passport and Patriot Passport holders.
Residents of Coconut Grove in the 33133 zip code is $5 per person per day (proof of residency required).

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival® celebrates 50 years of culture and tradition this President’s Day weekend by enticing and satisfying Miami’s imagination and appetite for visual, culinary and performing arts.

In honor of the festival’s half-century milestone, the festival committee has selected world-renowned Brazilian artist Romero Britto to create the official poster for the 2013 festival.

Like Britto, many emerging and renowned artists flock to Coconut Grove to participate in this annual event. Artists from more than 36 states, Europe and Canada were among those applicants that submitted samples in mixed media, painting, photography, digital art, printmaking & drawing, watercolor, claywork, glass, fiber, jewelry & metalwork, sculpture and wood. Applicants included 15 local artists from the Miami area and more than 100 from Florida.

“Our festival is truly a celebration of the all forms of the arts, introducing masters in all mediums and genres,” said Monty Trainer, president of the Arts Festival. “Locals and visiting guests alike will appreciate the internationally celebrated visual, musical and culinary collections.”

Complementing the visual arts on display will be the musical talents of Miami-native pop-star Cris Cab, who will perform his fusion of pop, reggae and soul on the main stage in Peacock Park. At only 19 years old, Cab’s recent accolades include being the mentee of internationally acclaimed producer Pharell Williams, recording alongside Wyclef Jean and supporting acts like O.A.R. Matisyahu, T-Pain, and Gym Class Heroes. He was also recently named by MTV as one of “The Most Criminally Overlooked Artists of 2012,” with his recently released full-length mix-tape “Echo Boom” receiving more than 300,000 downloads last year.

In addition to the entertainment, festival attendees can also satisfy their appetites for gourmet cuisine in the popular Culinary Pavilion. This area of the festival invites nationally renowned chefs to prepare their famous specialty dishes. This year’s chefs will represent the hottest restaurants and hotels from South Florida, including popular local chef Giorgio Rapicavoli, founder of the pop-up restaurant Eating House, and winner of The Food Network’s “Chopped”. Chef Douglas Rodriguez of de Rodriguez Cuba, Chef John Richards of TUYO and the Short Chef™, among many others, will also be participating in this year’s festival.
Festival hours will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Admission to the Arts Festival is $10 per person, per day.  Children 12 and under are free. Residents of Coconut Grove in the 33133 zip code can enjoy the Festival for a reduced admission of $5 (proof of residency required).

The Coconut Grove Arts Festival is produced by the non-profit Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association. Proceeds help fund year-round arts programs. The association also maintains the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery and presents special exhibitions throughout the year from its location at the Shoppes at Mayfair.

Since its inception in 1963, the association has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to students who attend fine arts programs in local schools.

Spring is nature’s way of saying Get Sprung! On March 9th, the producers of Grovetoberfest will launch Sprung! – a true spring and summer craft beer festival like no other.

The idea behind this event came from the South Florida craft beer enthusiasts who were among the 6,500 in attendance at Grovetoberfest 2012. Sprung! will give beer fans the opportunity to sample over 150 spring and summer craft beers, which are considered to be some of the best seasonal beers of the year. Beers from breweries like Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn Brewery, Kona, Magic Hat, Shiner, Shipyard, Harpoon, Blue Moon and many more will be showcasing their spring and summer offerings. Sprung! will also host a complete lineup of Florida beers from Schnebly, Cigar City, Tequesta Brewing and Florida Beer, to name a few. In addition, the lineup includes a complete list of ciders, including Crispin Cider, Magners and Woodchuck. As an added bonus, event goers will be treated to a selection of beer from Sweetwater Brewing including their summer beers not available anywhere in South Florida. Sprung! will also offer a homebrew section featuring brews created by local beer lovers.

There will be a dedicated section for games including Corn Hole, Giant Jenga, Beer Pong, Mega Twister and Human Bowling — complete with large, plastic balls big enough to hurl a person for strikes! “We’re going to continue focusing on our mission of expanding craft beer in South Florida, while adding seasonal beers and sprinkling a little more fun into the mix. The atmosphere at Sprung! is meant to be fun and spirited,” said event director Tony Albelo. People will still get to enjoy live musical entertainment and plenty of food vendors offering a wide variety of food.

Join us December 1st at Group-X-Fit as we showcase local photographer James Woodley.

London born James Woodley moved to Miami in 2009. He found his new challenge in photography with a new skyline and available natural lighting, the subject matter and backdrop to produce images that matched as close as possible to his imagination.

in the fast pace of Miami he realized his passion was freezing motion & action with a camera, to capture things that happen in the blink of an eye. Moments that happen too quickly too see, yet are too important to miss.

He also developed a fascination with people in his street photography. The ability to immortalize someone in an image is a powerful one, but to capture them when they’re not aware they are being seen. When they are natural, their pose and expression unaffected by the camera and its ability to heighten the feeling of self-consciousness.

The aim of his work is to show us the beauty in what we usually fail to see as the world rushes by us.

Signature cocktails, tapas, great raffle prizes, auction items and wonderful parting gifts for the ladies
This fund raising event not only will be raising money for research, it also raises awareness to   ensure the continuity of Dr. Lampidis’ groundbreaking research effort for the good of mankind.

At this critical point, The Lampidis Foundation need to build a fund of $6 million that will support Dr. Lampidis research laboratory over the next ten years and to raise another $4 million to $6 million to bring these findings to clinical trial and eventually to production and direct delivery to patients.

Theodore Lampidis,Ph.D has devoted his scientific life to understanding the complexities of tumor cell biology and the mechanisms by which cancers become resistant to treatment  in hope of finding a common trait among all tumors that will allow for universal targeted treatment.  His years of scrupulous work have paid off; he has identified a metabolic process that is common to all tumors and he is working with his colleagues to develop treatment delivery methods.

The overall goal of Dr. Lampidis’ work is to provide the preclinical data required to expand the clinical application of 2-DG from solely using it to kill the cells found in the hypoxic regions of solid tumors to targeting the entire tumor regardless of its environmental conditions, i.e. oxygen levels. The broader significance of his ideas is to use 2-DG to directly take advantage of selective glucose uptake in tumor vs. normal tissues, which presents the long-sought-after possibility of attacking a fundamental target common to all tumors.

Dr. Lampidis illustrates the idea behind his work with the ease of a practiced teacher:  "This works just like the Atkins diet.  When you lower carbohydrates, you burn fats and proteins.  When you remove oxygen, these hard-to treat tumor cells cannot burn fats or proteins; blocking sugar metabolism with 2-DG  literally starves them to death."

Coconut Grove, FL 33133

In a Solo Exhibit Titled: “Perception Through the Lens: Journey of a Photographer”
On view: November 3 – 26, 2012

An eye for the world…

The remarkable photographs of Carlos Manuel Cárdenes in this exhibition combine the best elements of the styles current from the 1960’s until the present.

From stirring portraits to captured moments in history to sublime landscapes, these works astound, intrigue, and mystify. They have a poetic quality that invites highly personal interpretations making viewers see the world anew.

What makes a photographic masterpiece? It might be a perfectly balanced still life, bathed in natural light. It might be a stirring portrait or a captured moment of history or a sublime landscape. The photographs in this exhibition share a special, intangible quality that sets them apart from others.

We are pleased to participate in the rediscovery of these important works.

The vernissage will be held on Saturday, November 3, 2012 during Coconut Grove Gallery Walk from 7 to 10 p.m.

‘Great Grove Bed Race’ set for Sept. 2

Box springs do battle at tongue-in-cheek Coconut Grove PJ-party tradition dating back 30 years; register at TheGreatGroveBedRace.com—it’s gonna be bed-lam!

In the mood for some mattress mayhem? Perhaps even a little bed-on collision? Then set your alarm for Labor Day Weekend and don’t hit snooze—you’ll lose. There’s no bedside manner required for this pajama party that’ll shake you out of your slumber and have you shedding your slippers and rippin’ your one-sies. This, Sleeping Cutie, is your wake-up call for the 2012 Great Grove Bed Race.

A tongue-in-cheek competition of racing homemade beds down the streets of Coconut Grove, the origins of the Great Grove Bed Race date back three decades. Tireless teams consist of five members—call it a “five-way”—with four ready-to-romp racers and one rider hitched to the headboard. Speed wins the ultimate exhale at the checkered flag, but awards also will be given for theme, creativity and décor (this being a consummate competition). Celebrity judges will be on hand to grade those looking to score away from home, and proceeds from this roll in the hay of hilarity benefit Local charities through the Junior Chamber International Crew of hundreds of cone-head volunteers.

Miami residents, Coconut Grove merchants, and local clubs, businesses and organizations all are invited to pull back the sheets on this year’s affair, with festivities kicking off Saturday night (Sept. 1) of Labor Day Weekend with the Michelob Ultra Pajama Pub Crawl through participating Coconut Grove bars and restaurants.

Sunday (Sept. 2) is race day, with highlights to include Pit Row Parade of decorated beds on display; and of course the 1/8th-mile trundle through the heart of the Grove Village. And to eliminate any awkwardness or hard feelings after the on-track tryst, Grove merchants will host a post-race celebration complete with live music, interactive exhibits and perhaps even a little pillow talk—just no sleeping with the enemy…maybe….

This Labor Day Weekend, Coconut Grove is the place to be for some laborious laughter. For event info—and to register to create your own bedlam—visit TheGreatGroveBedRace.com. Don’t sleep on it!

The Great Grove Bed Race is produced by the Grove Merchant Group. The Grove Merchant Group welcomes visitors and patrons to enjoy the tree-lined streets of Coconut Grove while branding the neighborhood as an attractive and viable village.

$30.00 donation at the door, or $25.00 prepaid at www.festidan.com, guests are provided with a wrist band giving them admission to the event and free beer provided by its sponsors.

The event benefits the ALS foundation which is a foundation founded to help fund scientific research to find a cure for the disease commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”.

The event consists of performances by four (4) live musical acts on a sound stage. Guests are encouraged to come to the event with all their tailgating needs as the event’s slogan is “This is Tailgating!”.

Being that the event is outdoors and in the middle of August, the event has a very “T-Shirt & Sandal” vibe to it which coincides well with the tropical atmosphere of Coconut Grove. This is the sixth year the event is being held and Grove Cares Board Members anticipate that this will be our most successful event to date due to the overwhelming support the event has received from the community. The street festival transforms Grand Avenue into a journey across the ocean, creating a perfect harmony of Caribbean culture of the Bahamas and the African American vibe of Miami-Dade County.

Arts for Learning Miami presents Celebrate Summer Art 2012 Summer Student Showcase 8/4/12

Arts for Learning Miami (A4L) presents Celebrate Summer Art 2012 Summer Student Showcase
Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Lewis Arts Studio
101 Grand Avenue
Miami, FL 33133

A free, community, open-house event and art exhibition featuring the works of students enrolled in the inaugural summer camp program at the Lewis Arts Studio, Coconut Grove.

Formerly housed in the Little Haiti Cultural Center, A4L has relocated to a new facility that enables middle school students, from throughout Miami-Dade County as well as elementary school students enrolled at the Barnyard after-school program, access to intensive visual arts study. The event will celebrate the 4th year of the Lewis Arts Studio – a program made financially possible through the Jonathan D. Lewis Foundation.

Commenting on the benefits of the new studio, Teaching Artist, Jenny Llewellyn Jones comments, “This space is organic and flexible. We are not in one contained space, but many smaller connected ones. This space allows for so much more integration of the groups of students as well as allowing for individual investigations. And, being so close to each other, in such an open space, sparks student curiosity in a way that we have not had before.” Llewellyn also notes that being able to work on walls and not just tables gives students an opportunity to work like professional artists.
Lewis Arts Academy returns for its fourth summer of intensive visual arts study. A dedicated group of middle school students receive a crash course in portfolio development, working daily on improving their drawing and painting skills with Llewellyn and Abdiel Acosta. In the afternoons, the students split into two groups and work with either Loriel Beltran on sculpture or create a film with Joseph Grant.

“The Lewis Arts Studio expands these students beyond skill building. Not only do the students get the techniques, but the program is such an eye opener- to have a better vision of what it means to be an artist, to find their own way of artistic expression,” concludes Llewellyn. “This program develops them as a whole artist, not just one assignation (drawer, sculptor, painter, etc.) This is not just learning a linear progression of skills – there is learning skills as well as group dynamics, finding your own voice, and what’s out there in the community.”

For more information on the Lewis Arts Studio, call Dia Carter Webb at 305.576.1212 *24 or email dia@a4lmiami.org.

Art Live Fair benefiting the Lotus House Women Shelter 10/26/12-10/28/12

Art Live Fair
10/26/12- 10/28/12, times vary by day
Coconut Grove Convention Center
2700 S. Bayshore Drive
Coconut Grove, FL 33133
www.artlivefair.org

Art Live 2012 is an interactive, performance based, contemporary “art happening” and fair in which artists and exhibitors are invited to share the creative process unfolding spontaneously in every form of artistic medium and to the extent possible, engage the fairgoers in the the creative process. All proceeds from Art Live Fair directly benefit Lotus House Women’s Shelter.

Like the Wynwood Art Fair launched on the streets last year, the Art Live Fair will be an art happening, where the artists and audience work together to create works of art live and spontaneously. The Fair will be part spectacle, part experiment, and include every form of artistic medium working both indoors and outdoors of the new venue at the Coconut Grove Convention Center. The fair will showcase Miami artists this year as well as artists from all over the country.

Constance Collins explained their goal to launch Miami’s fall 2012 art scene officially with the Art Fair Live. “So often we are asked about Miami’s art scene outside the context of the big commercial art fairs in December. With the Art Live Fair, we want to showcase Miami artists and the community coming together, launching the season with art that is both fun and thought-provoking, raising awareness for those who are served at the shelter at the same time we make art. The theme of the fair this year is ~ “we are all one” and the artists will work closely with the audience to explore our shared humanity and generate more resources that provide creative solutions to homelessness.”

Constance Collins extended thanks and gratitude to Martin Margulies and the Margulies Collection at the Warehouse for being the grand sponsor of the fair as well as to the lead sponsors: City of Miami, Event Star, Sotheby’s, Bank of America, Eulen America, WPBT Channel 2, Miami.com and the Miami Herald, Utrecht, Home Depot, Miami Dade College and Miami Magazine. Making the extraordinary artistic event possible.

The illustrious list of participants in the Fair include the Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art/North Miami, Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum, Bass Museum, and Wolfsonian Museum, along with the art departments of Florida International University, University of Miami and Miami Dade College. They are joined by the blockbuster private collection of Martin Z. Margulies, along with Miami artist residencies represented with exhibitions of Legal Arts and Art Center South Florida.

New to the fair are both Centro Cultural Espanol and the German Consulate General representing their cultures’ artists stationed in Miami.

The fair’s guest curators include Antonia Wright performance curator, Giselle Devera photography curator, P. Scott Cunningham literary curator, Primary Flight street art curator, Robert Chambers sculpture curator, along with video curator Grela Orihuela.

Ms. Wright explains the collaborative curatorial effort: “Our goal is to dissolve the boundaries between art and life – to open our hearts, learn, love and play with art. We wanted to give Miami’s contemporary art community a venue to reach out to the community, to engage the fair-goers with an art experience like no other. We like to say, “don’t just see art – be it at the Art Live Fair!”

RODEZ Art Gallery Presents Language of Color The Unspoken Words 8/4/12

RODEZ Art Gallery Presents: “Language of Color: The Unspoken Words” A Solo Exhibition by Dania Sierra
Vernissage: Saturday, August 4, 2012 from 7 to 10 pm
RODEZ Art Gallery
CocoWalk • 3015 Grand Ave., Suite 237
Coconut Grove, FL 33133

On View: Through August 25, 2012.

Cuban-American Contemporary Artist Dania Sierra will be showcasing a collection of works of art spanning fourteen years of her artistic career (1998-2012). Dania Sierra is an award-winning, multi-faceted artist who specializes in figurative art. She’s an animator, an illustrator, and a painter in the United States, currently living in Miami, Florida.

This exhibition will showcase the artist’s many different facets of her intuitive expressionistic oil/acrylic pieces showing her personal style, imagery, and deep seeded roots with her birth country of Cuba which is ever so present in her pieces.

Ms. Sierra’s uncanny ability to establish a personal dialogue through her brilliant execution of color and design, will take you into her private realm, her soul… leaving you with a colorful embrace that impales our subconscious repeatedly.

“I truly believe that the role of an artist in our society is to have that personal dialogue with the people and transform their world if only for a moment and enlighten their minds with nothing more beautiful than the language of color/imagination. Hence giving the viewer a different perspective of everyday life, this is something which is very rewarding to me as an artist,” states Ms. Sierra.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm,
and Friday & Saturday, 11 am to 10 pm.

Conxita Oliver Restrospective Art as the Essence of a Long Life Opening Night 6/2/12

Conxita Oliver Restrospective Art as the Essence of a Long Life Opening Night
Saturday, June 2
Rodez Art Gallery
CocoWalk, 3015 Grand Avenue #237
Cocnut Grove, FL 33133

June 2 – 30, 2012

Rodez Art Gallery is proud to present for the first time in the United States, the already consecrated Catalonian artist Conxita Oliver. Coinciding with the celebration of the artist’s 89th birthday, Rodez Art Gallery will offer collectors and the public in general alike the rare opportunity of meeting the person and acquiring the recent works of such an accomplished artist.

Come meet the artist on opening night Saturday, June 2 during Coconut Grove Gallery Night. The exhibit will be on view through June 30, 2012.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm, and Friday & Saturday, 11 am to 10 pm.

Conxita Oliver was born in Barcelona on June 5, 1923 in the heart of a family who lived between fabrics and paintbrushes. Daughter of the artist Juan Oliver Sardá, sketcher and renown portrait artist painter, who also worked in the field of artistic glassware, and niece to well-known landscape painter Ricardo Durán, Conxita began showing her gift as an artist as a little girl. Years later, she would begin her long storied career learning from her teacher Emili Bosch Roger. Later in life, she would expand her know-how and vocation next to another great teacher of the times, Juli Paschal.

Conxita Oliver is an artist whose work first encountered its roots in such a difficult and depressing context as was Spain just after the Civil War. The bodies of work presented are key testimonies to this critical period of Spanish history. They show us what art signified and what Art was in those years, as well as the circumstances and difficulties an artist faced in her country at the time. There is also fascinating sociological or political details in her work that reveal so much about life then, such as the fact that in order to paint landscapes in Mallorca in 1946 one had to overcome a series of obstacles like requesting a permit from the Coastal Command of the Civil Guard. This all sounds so remote nowadays, although there are still survivors from that period who suffered firsthand all those controls over their lives and their work.

As noted by Francesc Fontbona, “The consideration of Conxita Oliver as a painter, with her dedication to paid portrait work, flowers, still lifes and landscape painting, and the fact that after a few years of a “normal” career, she had to spend her time as the copyist of great works in art museums, leads us to remember that in those days, the ‘debut’ of a professional did not exactly come from the great Biennial exhibitions, or in free creativity art galleries, but that most painting took place precisely in these types of lesser tasks. In fact, there were specific and dreadful circumstances in the working life of people in Franco’s Spain that led Conxita Oliver to abandon her exhibitions during the 1950’s to dedicate her talents to copying the classics, especially at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. These same circumstances are what led her to direct her painting skills towards the vital skill of restoring, leaving examples of her work in the collections of various cultural entities and associations all over Catalonia. This work then is a biography of a person who has experienced Art with great intensity but who, for circumstances that Life has thrown at her, has had to create her art from a different side other than is typical for most artists. It is also an important reminder that art and painting often have different paths to follow than simply the free creation mentioned earlier. Today Conxita dedicates her talent to that freer world of art, despite the fact that she was forced to adopt more standard forms of earning her living by copying and restoring in her long and experienced past.”

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012. 6-9 PM
Cristina Chacon Gallery
3162 Commodore Plaza. Suite 1F2
Coconut Grove, Florida 33133

Alberto Gonzaělez Vivo works on the vital energy, the impression that stimuli produce in his senses is the source of inspiration for his work which begins in the deep perception and continues in a hard work of preparation of obsessive and detailed sketches.

His work ranges from geometric abstraction and Op art and is influenced by his research on the production of artists Luis Tomasello, Julio Le Parc, Victor Vasarely, Martha Boto Eduardo Moisset of Espaneěs, generative geometry artist and creator of the Centre for Plastic Mathematical Research of Argentina.

The use of light combined with geometric shapes and smart colours add balance to his work creating at the same time effects of great magnetism. Circles and squares of different dimensions freely inhabit weightless spaces displayed to the delight of the observers. This artist’s universe of painting explores in depth the power of color and forms. His plastic language expresses much more of what the artist feels and thinks and allows the viewer to go through the experience of intellectual and sensory pleasure.

Rodez Art Gallery Presents Women by Adrian Bellesguard 4/7/12

Rodez Art Gallery Presents Women by Adrian Bellesguard
Saturday, April 7
Rodez Art Gallery
CocoWalk
3015 Grand Ave., Suite 237
Coconut Grove, FL 33133

April 7 – 27, 2012

Adrian Bellesguard brings his collection of Women to Rodez Art Gallery this April 7th. Bellisguard grew up in Spain and studied at England’s University of Southampton obtaining a Master in European Art but considers himself a self-taught artist. He considers Ramon Calsina and Leonor Fini to be his mentors, but was also influenced by Francis Bacon, Goya, expressionism, and neo-expressionism.

“My approach to the age-old theme of women is no different than any other theme in my artwork. I could say that to paint women or to work in symbolism is just an excuse, but that would be a lie,” says Bellesguard.

He goes on to say, “Conceptual art does not exist, what remains in conceptual art is precisely what is NOT conceptual, art and concept exclude each other. Art can include a concept but there is no art in a concept alone. An idea is not art.

Come meet the artist on opening night as Women opens to the public on Saturday, April 7 during Coconut Grove Gallery Night and will be on view through April 27, 2012.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday, 11 am to 7 pm, and Friday & Saturday, 11 am to 10 pm.

New Shows by Local Legends Erika King and Meme Ferre Debut 4/7/12

New Shows by Local Legends Erika King and Meme Ferre Debut
Saturday, April 7
Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery
3390 Mary Street Suite 128
Coconut Grove, FL 33133

Any outsider might incorrectly assume that tropical Miami doesn’t experience a change in its seasons. Yet, like any local will tell you, Spring brings a sense of even more desired sunshine, laid back behavior and lively moods than this beach town is accustomed to. In already colorful Coconut Grove, two longtime local artists will debut new, vibrant and powerful exhibitions on Saturday, April 7 as the Jim Hunter Gallery and Coconut Grove Arts Festival (CGAF) Gallery welcome “Evolution of Spirit” and “Raw Energy / Energía Cruda,” respectively.

With a master, retrospective collage collection, Erika King’s “Evolution of Spirit” displays iconic images of the Mona Lisa, Venus de Milo, Statue of Liberty, Native Americans, angels and even Marilyn Monroe, through the use of familiar fragments of sheet music, stamps and torn foreign currency. Considering the collages a process of evolving spiritual moments, the ethereal paintings recall her fascination with the sky and cloud formations while traveling by air in 1965 to 2012.

“The splashes of paint and connecting lines evoke energy and vibration waves which I feel unifies us all,” said King. “I take my time to focus on a fond, deep search for spirituality within each one.”

Originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Erika King is a long-time Miami-based artist known for her corporate, commemorative and celebrity collages. She received formal training from L’Ecole de Beaux Art in Paris and has exhibited throughout Europe, Venezuela, New York City and San Francisco. Her corporate collages have been commissioned by American Express, Texaco, United Way, Anheuser Busch, Blockbuster Entertainment, AT&T Wireless, Nokia, Radio Shack and AIG, among many other Fortune 500 companies.

Channeling similar self-exploration vibes, Meme Ferre debuts at the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery next door, paintings with transcendent realities in her exhibition “Raw Energy / Energía Cruda.” Combining colors of the Caribbean and the iconic mysticism of India, Ferre’s pieces transporting the observer to separate experience. Like the energies of the trade winds of the tropics, each abstracted brush stroke stirs up an intense, almost physical, force across the pieces colors.
“In some not too distant future, we will all be sustained by the gathering of the wind emitted by energy and strokes of a paintbrush,” said Ferre. “These windy spirits, like distant drums, help us achieve a sustainable natural lifestyle, all using forces and energies as muses.”

Ferre’s artwork can currently be found at Museo de Arte de Ponce in Puerto Rico and Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center in Key Biscayne. She has exhibited in London, New York City, Washington D.C, Brooklyn, Miami, Palm Beach, Venice, Ibiza and Provincetown, as has also debuted performance art and installations at such events as the Miami International Film Festival and the Miami International Book Fair. Ferre received a BFA from the Pratt Institute and an MA from New York University. She is also a Museum Educator of Art in Public Places for Miami-Dade County.

Both the Jim Hunter Gallery and the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery are funded by proceeds from the annual Coconut Grove Arts Festival event. Presenting special exhibitions throughout the year from their locations at Mayfair, both galleries are managed by the non-profit Coconut Grove Arts and Historical Association and serve as a hub for cultural activities in Coconut Grove. Since its inception in 1963, the association has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to students who attend fine arts programs in local schools.

Gifford Lane Art Stroll 3/18/12

Gifford Lane Art Stroll
Sunday, March 18th from 12 noon to five p.m.
Gifford Lane between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block).
Coconut Grove, FL

It’s free. It’s fun. It’s the Grove the way the Grove once was.

The fourteenth annual Gifford Lane Art Stroll will take place on Sunday, March 18th from 12 noon to five p.m.

It’s the Grove’s other art festival.

You will find it in Coconut Grove near the Kirk Munroe tennis courts, rolled out along one sleepy little block of Gifford Lane between Oak and Day Avenues (3200 block).

The Coconut Grove event features work by more than seventy artists positioned along the normally quiet little lane on fences, in front yards, on clotheslines, in trees, and on ladders. Here you will find some of the finest artists in the region up close and personal.

The truth about the Gifford Lane Art Stroll is that it is attended by thousands of people each year. The date changes every year. Almost the only way you are going to hear about the Gifford Lane Art Stroll is by word of mouth—it is like being personally invited to the party.

The Art Stroll gives away all of the profit taken in from the sale of cucumber punch, broiled burgers, hot dogs, grilled shrimp, wonderful ribs and, of course, tons of art. Over the years, the Stroll has donated more than $40,000 to two Grove charities– the St. Stephen’s AIDS Ministry and the St. Alban’s Child Enrichment Center in the Grove Village West.

Sculpture, portraits, sea and landscapes, tile mosaics, large abstract paintings, photography, mixed media, jewelry, and several art forms that as yet have no name will be displayed along the shady lane in the laid back tropical setting.
The art. The vibe. The cucumbers. Rock and roll. The blues.

The 30th King Mango Strut 12/31/11

The 30th King Mango Strut
Saturday, December 31 at 2pm
Coconut Grove
www.kingmangostrut.org
www.facebook.com/kingmangostrut
Mango Hotline at 305-401-1171.

WARNING: PARADE CONTAINS 99% NUTS!

Join King Mango and his merry band of MangoHeads in Occupying the Grove on Saturday, December 31st. At 2pm, be there in your finest hats and facinators to witness the ceremonial dropping of the banana and the official start of the satirical parade that has been a model of civic engagement and civil uprising throughout the years. With “winning” material “ripped from the headlines,” the Mangoheads will keep you laughing longer than Kim Kardashian’s marriage.

The Grand Marshal this year is Ron Magill. With over 30 years as a wildlife expert and Communications Director for Zoo Miami, there’s no better king of the jungle to lead the animal house of MangoHeads.

Our Strut Celebrity is Katy Sorenson, the never recalled/never indicted/never removed-by-the-governor, former commissioner of Never-Neverland (dba Miami-Dade County.) Katy has been much closer to King Mango than Facebook’s 4 degrees of separation. Strut co-founder, the late Bill Dobson, worked for Katy.

In this interactive parade, the spectators – the true occupiers of the Grove – are encouraged to bring tents, lawn chairs and cardboard signs. You can wake up thinking you are going to watch a parade and end up watching yourself in the evening news IN the parade.

So all you pepper spray enthusiasts get ready to laugh because as creative as we are, we can’t possibly make this stuff up. Watch this past year’s headlines come to life:
· Join Time Magazine’s Person of the Year protesting protestors protesting protestors!
· Herman Cain reveals his 9-9-9 Plan for “Women for Cain”!
· Go up to see the Wizard of Odds at Miami’s new destination casino!
· Watch out for Highway Patrol Trooper Watts!
· Wall Street Vampires tap Charlie Sheen’s Tiger Blood!
· Get slimed by giant African snails!
· Join Citizens Revolting Against Politicians (The C.R.A.P. Party)!
· Party with the Miami Beach Party Cops!
· Receive North Korean grief counseling!
· Sierra Club throws a baby shower to welcome the 7th billion person on earth!
· Watch Dr. Buttock fix-a-flat butt!
· Anthropology Majors for Rick Scott!
· Watch the new reality show: The Real Housewives of Bin Laden!

And if that wasn’t enough to make you plank, there will also be special appearances by The Gay Penguins, Gaddafi, Anthony Weiner, Donald Trump, Tim Tebow and Strut favorite, Lindsay Lohan!

Expect to see the usual Strut suspects: The Hare Krishnas, the Marching Freds, Running of the Bull Sh*tters, Coconut Grove Juggling Exchange, Progressive Marching Funeral Band, Little Mr. & Miss. Mangoes, former Miss Mangoes and dethroned Miss Mangoes. King Mango Music Massacre will include bands: 18 Wheelers, Tall Boys Soul Band and RoadKill.

The Pre-Parade activities begin at 1:30 pm at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway with the Little Mr. & Miss. Mango Pageant (for kids 4-10) hosted by Buzz Fleischman, Radio Buzz from WLRN’s ‘South Florida Arts Beat’. Unlike Toddlers & Tiaras, everyone is expected to win. The winners will ride the first float of the Strut.

Parade begins at 2 pm at the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway. The parade turns left onto Main Highway, turns left onto Grand Avenue at CocoWalk and back to Commodore Plaza. If we are having too much fun, we will go around again until we all fall down. After the Parade, Commodore Plaza will remain closed to traffic and the King Mango Music Massacre begins. All the bands in the parade will continue playing until the festivities end at 6pm.

All this entertainment is FREE and open to the public – meaning it wasn’t funded by TARP. There is plenty of parking along or near the parade route at CocoWalk, Mayfair, Coconut Grove Playhouse parking lot on Main Highway and Charles Avenue, St. Stephens Episcopal Church, Coconut Grove Elementary School, City garage at Oak Avenue and Mary Street, and the City garage next to the Sonesta Hotel. Click here for Coconut Grove map for parking.

For those who don’t want to drive, take the Metrorail to the Coconut Grove Station. There will be shuttle buses (Coconut Grove Circulator) picking up eager parade-goers every 15 minutes at the station and dropping off by the parade route.

Putting the NUT in CocoNUT Grove since 1982!

Art Basel Day 6-Brunches, Brunches and more Brunches By Betty Alvarez

Sagamore Brunch
The Sagamore’s annual Art Basel Brunch, one of the most sought-after events of the season, was hosted by hotel owners, Mary and Cricket Taplin in partnership with six local museums: the Bass Museum of Art, Lowe Art Museum, Miami Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, The Patricia & Phillip Frost Museum of Art at FIU and the Wofsonian-FIU. Besides the brunch I took an opportunity to see Will Ryman’s 65 Street Rose Sculpture-a colossal road bed, soaring over 20ft. high, that bloomed on the hotels beachfront. The Brodsky Center for Innovative Editions was also exhibiting at the Sagamore. Lots of photographic artwork by many artists. A great viewing addition to the brunch.

Tudor House Brunch
Food Network celebrity chef and partner Geoffrey Zakarian along with Executive Chef Jamie DeRosa kicked off Tudor House’s new Rosé Brunch during Art Basel weekend. Zakarian was on-hand to talk brunch, while The Vincent Rafford Quartet plays and a traveling Bloody Mary cart delivered the perfect daytime cocktail. However, the spotlight is the Rosé Wine list, consisting of a curated selection of special varietals representative of regions from Anjou to Provence. The menu, offered both Saturdays and Sundays starting at 11am, covers both breakfast and lunch themed options. On the lighter side, a raw and crudo assortment included Florida stone crabs, Wild Alaskan King Crab and West Coast Oysters.

My Brickell by Karim Brunch
International design talent Karim Rashid, named by TIME the “Most Famous Industrial Designer in All the Americas,” made an in-person appearance for the launch of mybrickell’s sales center. Karim signed his latest book Sketches and presenting his mural of ideas and designs for his first-ever condo design at mybrickell. Guests were encouraged to wear pink in honor of Rashid’s iconic dress attire, making a colorful visual. The 192-unit tower will be centrally located in the heart of Miami’s Brickell area when it breaks ground in the first quarter of 2012. The center showcases Rashid’s energetic designs to serve as an impacting vision to future residents and brokers.

Coconut Grove Art Starts in the Grove

“Art Starts in the Grove” presented a synergy of 11 contemporary and fine art galleries, plus a special 3D Atrium featuring works by the late Cuban master sculptor Manuel Carbonell. The Grove collaboration will showcase works by artists who range in genre, age and background, offering something for all art lovers.Tibetan-born and Australia residing artist, Karma Phuntsok, traveled to Dharma Studio in the Grove to merge polar ideas. Creating “a modern expression of an ancient craft” by merging the two worlds of old and new into one eye-opening idea. Taking art enthusiasts on a trip through man’s subconscious mind, Rodez Art gallery will present “Fact or Fiction” by gallery owner George Rodez. The exhibition explored the relationship between life and dreams, and the struggle to leverage them both. George Rodez will also include 3 pieces from his “Dreams” series. Multiple award-winning photographer Patrick Farrell was featured at the Hunter Gallery displaying works by the same series that earned him the 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. Described as “provocative, impeccably composed” photos, the series depicted a brutal hurricane season in Haiti, displaying the fragile country’s humanitarian disaster. Inviting its 2011 Best of the Best winner back for special showcase exhibition, the Coconut Grove Arts Festival Gallery presented the newest pieces by award-winning, Florida glass blower Duncan McClellan. With the upcoming release of the Hollywood film My Week with Marilyn, starring Academy-Award Nominee Michelle Williams, this pop culture hub will feature a well-timed exhibit titled “Tribune to Marilyn Monroe.” International artists have always made a home Coconut Grove and this year is no different. Boswell Mourot Fine Art Gallery welcomed international artist, Hans Feyerabend as he brought his award-winning “New Works” collection to its walls. Guests enjoyed fruit, wine, and cheese while admiring the feature works of Isabelle “Izi” Schuette, a local Grove artist. For those who want to express their creative side, GroveHouse will also be hosting “Imagine—Let The Inner Artist Out” – an exhibit that encourages everybody to live and express the energy of art. AIDS has killed more than 25 million people between 1981 and 2007, and an estimated 33.2 million people worldwide live with HIV as of 2007, making it one of the most destructive epidemics in recorded history. Despite recent, improved access to antiretroviral treatment and care in many regions of the world, the AIDS epidemic claimed an estimated 2 million lives in 2007, of which about 270,000 were children. Family Aids Coalition offers assistance to families affected by HIV/AIDS through education, testing and counseling. FAC works in collaborative partnerships with local and national organizations and governments to improve the sexual and reproductive health and rights for women, families, children and those living with HIV/ AIDS in Miami Dade County. All FAC services are provided at no cost to the client.

“Through fundraisers such as this one hosted by Rodez Art, FAC is able to continue helping those in need” says Dr. Maria Isabel Betancourt, Founder and Program Director. Karma Phuntsok. Transmitting Divinity Tibetan Art

Dharma Studio cordially invites you to the artist reception for Karma Phuntsok. Transmitting Divinity Tibetan Art

November 26 – December 11, 2011
Karma Phuntsok’s unique and dynamic expression of contemporary Buddhist art is at once steeped in ancient Tibetan culture and at the same time completely breaks free from strict cultural norms and rules. His art and life are reflections of each other. His paintings ooze compassion, humor, confidence, deep thought, peace and strength. Stare long enough at any piece and you will continue to see something new and thought provoking. Karma often beautifully, intelligently shines a spotlight on political and philosophical ideas.

Karma was still a child in Tibet when in 1959 he along with 80,000 other refugees that year followed His Holiness the Dalai Lama into exile. As a refugee in India he excelled at art and eventually was an apprentice to master Tibetan Thangka painter in Nepal. There Karma learned the ancient techniques such as mixing the pigments tempering them with herbs, and how to hem the canvases and string them in a wood frame. He became thoroughly immersed in not just the particular disciplines of painting but also the rich symbolism and allegory that underlie the Thangka technique

Karma now lives with his wife and son in a charming cottage in the rolling bushlands north of Kyogle, Australia. The dense forest visible from the clearing surrounding their home, lays the fertile ground for what springs to life on his canvas. The art of Karma Phunstok is a modern expression of an ancient craft, a time-honored tradition interwoven with 21st century inspiration. His wealth of imagery and allegory flow from the richness of his life experience: from a childhood in Chinese-occupied Tibet, coming of age as a refugee in India, an apprenticeship in Nepal, and his love of the Australian outback. His work is internationally acclaimed, and his paintings hang in private and public collections and galleries worldwide.

Karma travels the world exhibiting his art. Most recently he was featured in a one-man show, “Sacred Painting”, in honor of the Dalai Lama’s visit to Sidney, Australia, and a well received individual exhibition “Magie du Tibet” at Galerie Métanoia in Paris, France. His exhibitions have included the Queen’s Hall at Parliament House in Melbourne, and his exhibition at “Tibet Art Now” for the Dalai Lama’s visit to Amsterdam. Throughout the years Karma has done many paintings for the Dalai Lama including one that hangs in his Holiness’ temple in Dharamsala India.
