Produced in collaboration with Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces this town has to offer. The CULTRA spaceship lands in newly christened Omni Park Miami for the April edition.

Our ringleaders this month are the quirky kids of Front Yard Theatre Collective who have been improv-ing their way to greatness for seven years. We’ll start with the usual 90 minutes of open mic time from 7:30 – 9pm followed by a feature performance from our rambunctuous hosts!

Interested in performing? Pre-register with our online form: http://buskerfestmiami.com/cultra-performer-application/

Day-of signup will close at 7pm. Musicians should plan to play in stripped-down fashion – we have a lot of performers to get through.

Mad Cat Theatre Company continues its 17th season with a production of two of Vaclav Havel’s sharp political dramas AUDIENCE and PROTEST.

The subversive Czechoslovakian playwright, Prime Minister & President, Vaclav Havel was in danger of being declared a “social parasite” by the neo-Stalinist regime of Gustav Husák when he wrote AUDIENCE & PROTEST back in 1975 & 1978.

AUDIENCE deals with the travails of Havel’s alter-ego Ferdinand Vanek – recently released from jail for anti-government activities. Valek is stuck in the bleak office of the foreman of the brewery where he has been forced into menial labour. The tedious bureaucracy and constant paranoia of life under the Communists have driven the foreman to alcoholism and to the brink of insanity – he is prone to bouts of rage and despair.

In PROTEST, Havel’s alter ego Ferdinand Valek has escaped his hellish office to visit the middle-class home of one of his friends. He is hoping to convince his old friend Stanek to sign a petition renouncing the regime.

Both plays seek to shine a light on the darkness of censorship and tyrannical rule. Don’t miss the show that critics and audiences are raving over!

Directed by Paul Tei and Theo Reyna
Featuring Erik Fabregat, Michael Gioia, Noah Levine, and Pete Smith Rogan

Vaclav Havel’s AUDIENCE and PROTEST is running now through March 12, 2017, with performances Thursday – Sunday 8 p.m. in MTC’s Sand Box located at 9816 NE 2nd Avenue, Miami Shores FL 33138. It’s time to bring a little culture to Downtown Miami! CULTRA is a roving Open Mic held in a Downtown Miami park every third-Thursday from January to May. Produced in collaboration with Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces this town has to offer.

We are psyched to have Words And Wine Open Mic as co-producers for the second edition! Words and Wine have been producing a weekly, Wednesday-night open mic for over six years. Expect a diverse lineup and a collection of local vendors for CULTRA’s debut in Museum Park! We’ll have the usual 90 minutes of open mic time from 7:30 – 9pm followed by a feature set from Gypsy Latin jammers TAMBOKA.

Interested in performing? Pre-register with our online form! It’s simple and you’ll have a good chance of getting a spot. Electricity is limited at Museum Park. Musicians should plan to play acoustic or rely on very little amplification. Day-of signup will close at 8pm.

Interested in vending? Send us an email at info@buskerfestmiami.com.

CULTRA is made possible by a Public Space Challenge grant awarded by the Miami Foundation. Have an idea for improving Miami’s public spaces? You too can participate in the 2017 Public Space Challenge when applications open later this year.

CULTRA brings a little more culture to downtown in the first-ever roving, outdoor open mic in Miami starting on Thursday, January 19, 2017.

A collaborative event series produced by Buskerfest Miami and Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces Downtown Miami has to offer. On the third-Thursday of each month, January to May 2017, CULTRA will be held in one of the Downtown Miami parks in an effort to put the “public” back in public spaces and foster connections between attendees and our precious bayfront.

The event begins with ninety minutes of open stage time followed by a feature performance by a well-known local group. Each edition of CULTRA will be a collaboration with one of Miami’s other prominent, long-running open mics and include a guest host. Artistic Vibes, who produces one of Miami’s longest-running weekly open mics, will host the inaugural CULTRA event on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park. Future dates of CULTRA are February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18.

Miami New Drama officially begins its 2017 season with the American premiere of Terror. Directed by two-time Tony Award-winning Director Gregory Mosher, with Artistic Direction from Co-Founder Michel Hausmann. Miami New Drama brings the American adaptation and translation of this German play stateside.

Acclaimed international drama casts the audience as jurors, while Colony Theatre’s stage transforms into a courtroom. The storyline follows a pilot facing trial after she has shot down a hijacked commercial flight headed for a crowded stadium. Her fate is in the audience’s hands. To further the show’s interactive quality and to track the theatrical trial’s verdict, audiences can check statistics of votes on http://terror.theater. The statistics show the distribution of audience votes of “guilty” and “not guilty” as the play unfolds.

Alexander knows it is going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day when he wakes up with gum in his hair, and he is right. Things only get worse as the day goes on: his best friend bails on him, there’s no dessert in his lunch bag, there’s lima beans for dinner and kissing on TV! The only reasonable response is to move to Australia. Judith Viorst adapted her own award-winning children’s book into this marvelous musical that is wacky, wild, and wonderfully wise.

On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the most electrifying jam and storytelling sessions of all time. Million Dollar Quartet brings the heart and soul of that legendary night to life with an irresistible tale of excitement and passion, featuring 21 timeless hits including “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Sixteen Tons,” “Great Balls of Fire,” “I Walk the Line,” “Fever,” “Hound Dog” and more.

The adventures of a spunky 9-year-old girl who is left to her own devices when her mother goes to heaven and her father gets lost at sea, Pippi’s view of life is as fun as her bright-red flyaway braids. Along with her friends Tommy and Annika, a horse on the porch and a monkey named Mr. Nilsson, Pippi goes on unstoppable expeditions through the neighborhood. A fierce individualist who cannot be held back, Pippi makes the best of every situation, including teaching the burglars in her house a lesson in manners. At first glance this fun-loving and outrageous young girl seems to not fit in anywhere, but once someone meets her, they can’t seem to live without her. Written by Thomas W. Olson with music by Roberta Carlson.

What follows is a riotously funny new play that gets every comedic element right and ultimately questions the price of fame. Carbonell Award-Winning Actor Chris Crawford will amaze audiences playing a handful of roles including himself, his boyfriend, Streisand’s Manager, James Brolin and ultimately Barbra herself.

Tyrrhenian Blue
A theater play by Antiheroes Project with the support of Artefactus Cultural Project
Tyrrhenian Blue is Antiheroes Project’s latest production, presented with the support of Artefactus Cultural Project. The piece, inspired on the life and death of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of the Little Prince, is a contemporary reflection on themes that have been at the core of human existence, such as war, solitude, creativity and human destiny. Written and directed by Jose Manuel Dominguez in collaboration with the team of actors, this work explores the enigmatic disappearance of Antoine de Saint-Exupery, over the Tyrrhenian Sea, France and the events surrounding his last morning.

The story begins in the morning of July 31st, 1944, when André Prevot wakes up Saint-Exupéry for what would turn out to be the last flight of the French pilot. The end of a legendary, controversial, bohemian, and arbitrary man. For years, a life eclipsed by his greatest work. Towards the end of his life, an existence as fascinating as his own masterpiece. What was going on in his life the day of his death? What thoughts was the great humanitarian preoccupied with during his final hours?

In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world.

The Org Welcomes Back Cutting-Edge Chilean Theater Company Teatro Cinema

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) MDC Live Arts performing arts series presents the wildly inventive Chilean theater company, Teatro Cinema , at 8 p.m. Saturday, Apr. 16, at the Colony Theatre. The company will present Historia de Amor (Love Story), the final work in a trilogy on the subject of love, based on a graphic novel by Regis Jauffret.

The cutting-edge Teatro Cinema virtually escapes the confines of theater, using film technique, special effects, mirrors, digital imaging, and highly stylized sets to create the illusion of travelling through time and space. Live performers insert themselves into filmed and photographed backdrops and interact with illustrated stills and animations inspired by graphic novels, immersing audiences in the world that is being created.

In Historia de Amor, the company applies these techniques to tell a story that addresses the thin line between reason and madness, love and domination. An English teacher abducts a young woman and turns her into his victim, concubine and mother. He takes over her life in multiple ways, leaving her with no choice but to accept her situation and turn inward for solace. The comic-book aesthetic and black-and-white palette highlight the fragmented, solitary psyches of the woman and her captor with more nuance than theater or film alone could.

“The technical ingenuity in what they do is undeniably immense” -The Guardian

“I remain in awe of the company’s unparalleled creativity and technical prowess,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.”We are thrilled to welcome them back to Miami where they will surely influence future theater makers and audiences with their distinctive technique and style.”

Leading up to their performance, the Teatro Cinema company will offer a mullti-day workshop to Teatro Prometeo students at MDC Wolfson Campus. The residency will be an instensive look in to the company’s technique–from storyboarding to content to staging and direction.

ABOUT TEATRO CINEMA
Teatro Cinema was founded in 1987 by puppeteer Jaime Lorca, performer-designer Laura Pizarro, and writer-director Juan Carlos Zagal. They explain they chose their company’s original name “La Troppa” (The Troop) to suggest “a troop of artists marching across the demolished horizons of the cultural decay that our country had been pushed to.” The group toured extensively as La Troppa with El Santo Patrono (1987), Salmon-Voodoo (1988), Rap del Quijote (1989), Pinocchio (1991), Lobo (1992), Viaje al Centro de la Tierra (1995), Gemelos (1999), and Jesús Betz (2003). In 2005 it was renamed Teatrocinema to highlight the way its diverse artists unite theater and cinema. Historia de Amor is part of a trilogy that includes Sin Sangre (Without Blood, 2007) and El hombre que daba de beber a las mariposas (The Man Who Fed Butterflies, 2010), which toured to Lincoln Center Festival; Théâtre de la Ville and Odeón; Teatro San Martín, Buenos Aires; Piccolo Teatro, Milan; and festivals in Avignon, Bogotá, Berlin, Edinburgh, Guanajuato, Madrid, Rio de Janeiro, and Vienna. Juan Carlos Zagal and Laura Pizarro were both born in Santiago and trained at the Catholic University of Chile. Zagal is director, performer, writer, and composer for Teatro Cinema. Pizarro was a performer, writer, and director for their work as La Troppa and is art director and designer for Teatro Cinema.

“Uproariously funny. It’s literate, coarse, thoughtful, sweet, scabrously inappropriate, wracked by existential anxiety, and wonderfully humane…this is one end-of-the-world story that’s likely to leave you grinning from ear to ear.”

– Washington City Paper

A grad student’s personal ad lures a mysterious girl to his subterranean research lab under the pretense of an evening of “no strings attached” sex. But when a global catastrophe strikes, their date takes on evolutionary significance. An epic and intimate comedy that spans over billions of years.

“At first glans “Boom” suggests a “Twilight Zone” rewritten as a sitcom… It winds up speaking, quietly and piquantly, to our enduring fascination with and need for myths about the beginning of life as well as its end.”
– New York Times

“A Grandly wacked-out apocalypse fantasy, one of those charmed evenings.”

SYNOPSIS

The Golem of Havana weaves together the music and traditions of two worlds, asking questions about family, community, religion, and politics.

“A delightful new holiday tradition” —Talkin’ Broadway

It’s now one year since his miraculous transformation, and good old Scrooge is back to his old ways, or so it seems. Ebenezer is now suing Marley and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future for breaking and entering, kidnapping, slander, pain and suffering, attempted murder, and intentional infliction of emotional stress. It’s the “Trial of the Century” with hysterical courtroom antics. With this all-new, very smart and clever script, worthy of the Dickens original, playwright Mark Brown has created an entertaining, funny and uplifting new tradition for the holiday season.

Based on The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe from The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, this musical adaptation is fun for the whole family, featuring unforgettable songs and popular characters. The story begins with the land of Narnia frozen in a perpetual winter of darkness and despair, seemingly all under the dominion of the White Witch, Queen Jadis, including the intelligent talking animals once ruled by the great and majestic lion Aslan, King of Narnia. Though Aslan is often absent from the land (so that his very existence is doubted by some), he returns when the need for him is greatest, bringing with him an end to the long winter, and making an ultimate sacrifice of love, culminating in a battle between good and evil. Entering at a moment of high adventure in the story are four children, transported from our world through a magical wardrobe.

TORUK – The First Flight is a live immersive multimedia spectacle that brings to the stage the breathtaking world of James Cameron’s AVATAR like you have never seen it before.

Through a riveting fusion of cutting-edge visuals, puppetry and stagecraft buoyed by a soaring cinematic score, Cirque du Soleil applies its unique signature style to James Cameron’s imaginary world and “makes the bond” between two kindred artistic visions that capture the imagination.

This live immersive experience also bears the distinct signature of directors and multimedia innovators Michel Lemieux and Victor Pilon. It is a living ode to the Na’vi’s symbiotic coexistence with nature and their belief in the basic interconnectedness of all living things.

When a natural catastrophe threatens to destroy the sacred Tree of Souls, Ralu and Entu, two Omaticaya boys on the brink of adulthood, fearlessly decide to take matters into their own hands. Upon learning that Toruk can help them save the Tree of Souls, they set out, together with their newfound friend Tsyal, on a quest high up in the Floating Mountains to find the mighty red and orange predator that rules the Pandoran sky. New Community Theater Opens in South Miami

Improv South Miami (ISM), a new theater located in South Miami that welcomes directors, actors, improvisers and local artists, will be hosting its grand opening on Saturday, August 22, 2015, from 8-10 p.m.

“We are so excited to be opening Improv South Miami, a non-profit organization focused on the local improv, arts and theater community. We want this theater space to be accessible for both established and up-and-coming theater and arts groups in South Florida,” said ISM founder Katrina Morris.

At ISM’s grand opening, house team Cage Free Humans, of which Morris is a member, will be headlining the entirely improvised comedy performance. Local improv teams Comedy School Dropouts and Miamah Comedy’s Battlecat will be opening for the show.

ISM was formed by Morris to provide low-cost rehearsal space and a free performance venue, with a percentage of funds raised going back to the performing artists. “The South Florida improv community is growing rapidly, with workshops and shows happening year-round. As the community grows, affordable rehearsal and performance space for independent teams are difficult to find,” she said.

Humongous on humor and large on laughs, the story of The Big Friendly Giant was Roald Dahlʼs personal favorite. On stage, his whizzcracklingly wacky tale comes to life with puppets and people creating a fantastical world of towering giants and magical adventures. In the Big Friendly Giant, we join two misfits on an unforgettable odyssey. The job of this larger-than-lifevegetarian is to blow magical dreams into children’s bedrooms. For a youngorphan “human bean”, however, the sight of the giant is too much and she fears for her life when he takes her away to an enchanted land. The harmless, cheeky Big Friendly Giant ultimately shows that heroes can come in all sizes.

Romeo and Juliet is a timeless story about two young people caught up in a rush of emotions who trade in a future of sorrows, leave a neighborhood of quarrels behind in pursuit of training their beautiful minds. Set in Miami at the turn of the 21st Century, the protagonist couple’s choices change their lives, the course of their families – and their city forever! Featuring tango and hip hop choreography, spoken word, graffiti arts, original sound tracks and romantic musical scores – this production will enthrall and inspire young and older audiences to think anew!

Clare Vickery, Director of Grace Arts Center, has teamed up with Janet Erlick of the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater to coproduce R&J. Describing their inspiration behind the project, Erlick says, “It’s always wonderful to introduce Shakespeare to young audiences, as the themes and characters still resonate strongly today… this R&J project adapts the story and adds modern influences, music and multiple art forms to make a truly unique theatrical experience. This past summer, FLCT alumni and students began to explore how to combine hip hop, stage combat, tango and street art to highlight the worlds of the Capulets and Montagues, and the upcoming performances will take that foundational work and expand upon it.”

Tickets for the events are available at: romeoandjuliet2015.eventbrite.com, and retail for $15, or $25 for a VIP ticket including a reception, Meet & Greet with the cast following the performance. Workshops surrounding the performances will also be announced on www.gracecafeandgalleries.com.

MELANCHOLALALAND

It’s the 21st century, and time to re-invent opera, but in a way that’s more fun, less pretentious, and a little messed up.

MelanchoLalaland™—with music by composer and Florida Atlantic University professor Joey Bargsten and libretto by writer Thea Zimmer—accomplishes this by fusing traditional elements of opera, theater, and dance with new and experimental visual media forms, all set to an electronic music score. MelanchoLalaland™ tells the dark tragi-comic story of three artist/engineers who design mind-altering experiences, enhanced by self-pleasuring technologies and a variety of brain chemicals. They deal with disgruntled employees, corporate takeovers, dissatisfied girlfriends, and cheesy space-aliens.

A PROPER MARRIAGE

Concept / Choreography: Pioneer Winter

A Proper Marriage is a speculative piece that comments on the perceived co-dependence of music and movement, especially live music with dance–underlying properties of a dancer’s dependence on composition, and the musician’s own foresight to create action from sound. Sheet music is attached to the backs of dancers, and the musicians follow the dancer in order to read the music and maintain the melody. Irony rests in the notion that if the dancer moves too quickly and the musician cannot keep up, the music will falter and the dancer’s own rhythm will stop.

Pioneer Winter is a Miami-native choreographer, dancer, and filmmaker of Pioneer Winter / Collective. He is co-director of RIFT Blackbox and the curator of transmedia performances for FilmGate Interactive Media Conference. Winter also directs Project LEAP (Living Equality through Arts and Performance), a free dance and creative communication program for LGBTQ teens that focuses on teaching how to use the arts for activism and social change. He was recently awarded the 2014-2015 Miami Choreographer’s Fellowship, and is on faculty of the FIU Honors College. His project Grass Stains was also recently awarded a Knight Arts Challenge Grant.

Premieres December 11 at Sun Life Stadium
New Show Dates Added, Limited Tickets Available From As Low As $35

Amaluna by Cirque du Soleil will open to a packed house in Miami on Thursday December 11 at Sun Life Stadium. The cast and crew of Amaluna are finishing up shows in Atlanta, GA this week and are preparing to travel to Miami with their 2,000 tonnes of equipment, in the convoy of 65 trucks.

To celebrate the Premiere in Miami and due to an overwhelming demand, additional show dates have been added with some tickets starting as low as $35. Tickets can be purchased by visiting cirquedusoleil.com/amalu… or by calling 1-877-9 CIRQUE. Amaluna’s show dates have now been extended to run in Miami until January 25 2015.

Amaluna invites the audience to a mysterious island governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Their queen, Prospera, directs her daughter’s coming-of-age ceremony in a rite that honors femininity, renewal, rebirth and balance which marks the passing of these insights and values from one generation to the next.

In the wake of a storm caused by Prospera, a group of young men lands on the island, triggering an epic, emotional story of love between Prospera’s daughter and a brave young suitor. But theirs is a love that will be put to the test. The couple must face numerous demanding trials and overcome daunting setbacks before they can achieve mutual trust, faith and harmony.

Amaluna is a fusion of the words ama, which refers to “mother” in many languages, and luna, which means “moon”; a symbol of femininity that evokes both the mother-daughter relationship and the idea of goddess and protector of the planet. Amaluna is also the name of the mysterious island where this magical story unfolds.

Some 30 years ago, Cirque du Soleil was but a dream. It was the dream of a small community of travelling performers who would do anything to share their love of the stage, of circus and of the world. The family has grown since then and now includes thousands of dreamers–creators, artists, technicians and workers who toil in the shadows. The dream has become a symbol of Québec pride, an international entertainment company that has brought 35 large-scale shows to life–20 of which are still in operation. The company, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in June 2014, has brought wonder and delight to close to 150 million spectators in more than 300 cities on six continents. Cirque du Soleil has close to 4,000 employees, including 1,300 performing artists from close to 50 different countries.

Amaluna is proud to be presented by Visa Signature, the official presenting sponsor of Cirque du Soleil, in association with Citi Cards. We also gratefully acknowledge our official sponsors for Amaluna, DHL and Xerox.

Clara the family matriarch happily runs her soup kitchen and tends to the family heirloom, a twenty-foot shrine of the Blessed Mother, which adjoins the house. This beacon commemorated the day in 1942 that the Virgin Mary appeared to her father at his home-based barbershop. During the course of this very funny and original play, the entire family’s faith is shaken to the core as the family legend seems to be unraveling. The evening’s results are heartfelt and hilarious.

The 2013 smash debut of Mouse King featured two sold-out shows. Lovers of what is sure to become a new holiday classic, conceived by Sesame Street veteran Noel MacNeal and featuring music by South Florida composer Jim Camacho, will now have three chances to take it in. Premiere night at Mandelstam Theater (8530 SW 57th Ave, South Miami, FL 33143) is Friday, December 12, at 7 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday, December 13 and Sunday, December 14. Tickets for Mouse King cost $20 and can be purchased online at http://mousekingtickets.com or by phone by calling 800.838.3006.

Mouse King, a delightfully entertaining family-friendly production, revisits the story of the seasonal favorite The Nutcracker from the mice point of view. The tale chronicles the story of prince Mouserick, the future ruler of the Kingdom of Sweets, and his struggles with Krakatuck, the human who wants to get rid of all vermin and become the king himself. The court magician Astrolog guides the young mouse king along the way and through some highly entertaining encounters and musical adventures.

“We’re excited about bringing Mouse King back this year,” offers MacNeal. “The reaction from the crowd during the performances last year plus the feedback we received after indicated to us that we have something truly special.” Says Camacho: “I’m honored to once again be working with Noel in bringing a new holiday tradition back to life. City Theatre will serve up a sizzling series of Florida-inspired short plays entitled Swamp Shorts on Monday, November 17 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at Miami Book Fair International’s newest attraction The Swamp.

The Swamp is a pop-up lounge (think Jimbo’s meets the Delano) that showcases Florida stories, music, dance, film, history, and art. All week long, Swamp events exploring the beauty, contradictions, uniqueness, and downright “weirdness” of life in Florida will be offered free of charge.

As a partner of Miami Book Fair International and the Center for Theatre and Literature at Miami Dade College, City Theatre was asked to solicit and curate a selection of shorts plays that align with The Swamp’s mission to reflect the personalities that animate Florida’s, and specifically Miami’s, cultural scene. A call for scripts was sent to homegrown playwrights, resulting in City Theatre’s Swamp Shorts, a vibrant one-night-only collection of readings of new short plays written by South Florida playwrights near and far, that celebrate the stories, characters, patois and sabor of the local community and Sunshine State.

Directed by City Theatre Guest Artist Gail Garrison, Swamp Shorts will be performed by The Swamp Troupe Acting Ensemble: Joshua Jean Baptiste, Ashley Chang, Chasity Hart, Andres Maldonado, David Kwiat, Jessica Brooke Sandford, Karen Stephens and Michael Uribe.

The Swamp Shorts play line-up includes:

Risen from the Dough by France-Luce Benson
Two Haitian sisters own a local bakery and learn that running a business in Miami is more than they expected.

Hey Girl by Jessica Farr
An encounter between a woman and a man waiting for a bus goes bad. Very bad.

Sand and Sam by Lauren Feldman
A woman mourning the death of a grandparent gets an assist from an understanding rabbi and a helpful gravedigger.

The Crocodile’s Bite by Vanessa Garcia
Four characters, all immigrants to the city, connect and collide one night in Miami.

A Pair of Miami Monologues by Gail Garrisan
A South Florida perspective on how to get from here to there, and how to look the part.

Roof by Ricky J. Martinez
A scene from a new full-length play set on a rooftop overlooking Biscayne Blvd.

Swamp Girl by Marj O’Neill-Butler
A South Florida single who’s more comfortable clubbing, considers an invitation for a blind date to the Everglades.

Two of the region’s literary disrupters combine to present this free event from 6 – 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 17 at The Swamp, located in the big tent at the Miami Dade College Wolfson Campus on the southeast corner of NE Third Street and Second Avenue. Craft beers, food trucks and fun take place on The Swamp Porch prior to and following Swamp Shorts. Free parking is available in the adjacent garage.

Miami DWNTWN Art Days
September 19-21, All Day
dwntwnartdays Downtown Miami
Website
Facebook

Art Days is designed to bring together and promote the cultural community, in addition to facilitating and incentivizing art exhibitions and other cultural activities. In its third year, Art Days, supported by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), continues to provide free inspiring art activities across the Downtown cultural landscape. Working in partnership with a variety of arts and culture institutions, organizations and artists, Art Days is a three-day cultural exploration that incorporates countless free events and exhibitions for the community to experience and enjoy. Art Days offers something for everyone from family activities, panel discussions, international exhibitions, bike tours, walking tours and so much more!

Art Days is comprised of three components:
The Hub
located at MCAD, 100 NE 1st Ave, Miami, FL 33132
The “hub” is the epicenter for information on Art Days. In 2013 over 130 events took place around Downtown Miami, so it’s worthwhile to take a moment and set an itinerary to make the most out of the weekend!
The hub is the place to…
…find someone to help you navigate through the vast amount of things to do.
…start most walking and bike tours.
…be creative and paint your own unique t-shirt.
…hang out and connect with your friends on social media.
…find people to welcome you to Downtown Miami.

The Fringe
The “Fringe” is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.

The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown
As a guideline, here is a schedule for the weekend:
Thursday: Media/VIP Preview of the Fringe and Art Days
Friday: School tours/ Exhibitions openings/ post -work cocktail activities
Saturday: Museum day; art tours and exhibitions
Sunday: Cultural activities/bike tours
