It’s time to bring a little culture to Downtown Miami! CULTRA is a roving Open Mic held in a Downtown Miami park every third-Thursday from January to May. Produced in collaboration with Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces this town has to offer.
We are psyched to have Words And Wine Open Mic as co-producers for the second edition! Words and Wine have been producing a weekly, Wednesday-night open mic for over six years. Expect a diverse lineup and a collection of local vendors for CULTRA’s debut in Museum Park! We’ll have the usual 90 minutes of open mic time from 7:30 – 9pm followed by a feature set from Gypsy Latin jammers TAMBOKA.
Interested in performing? Pre-register with our online form! It’s simple and you’ll have a good chance of getting a spot. Electricity is limited at Museum Park. Musicians should plan to play acoustic or rely on very little amplification. Day-of signup will close at 8pm.

The Miami Boat Show is returning to Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin with the addition of Pier 9 in order to accommodate more than 100 new luxury yachts for sale, making the Miami Boat Show one of the largest yachting exhibitions in the country. Attendees seeking the VIP treatment will also have exclusive access to everything from premium bites and live music, to concierge services, VIP parking, and an exclusive on-water VIP lounge aboard the 111-foot Biscayne Lady.

In addition to the Miami Marine Stadium footprint, the Miami Boat Show’s second location, Strictly Sail Miami, will once again dock at Miamarina at Bayside and this year feature approximately 130 sailboats, a large selection of sailing and power catamarans, dozens of daily seminars, and the newest sailing gear. Visitors to the Miami Boat Show can access Strictly Sail Miami by free water taxis or shuttle buses, running until 7p.m. daily.

After its success in 2016, the Miami Boat Show will once again offer sea trials, where interested shoppers can take the boat of their dreams for a spin in Miami’s open waters. This year, more boat exhibitors will participate, giving boat buyers a chance to test-drive a number of options. In addition, following last year’s popular sold-out on-water boating skills workshops, the show will offer its Discover Boating Hands-On Skills Training with more daily power boating and sailing courses. The 2017 show is once again expected to deliver a substantial economic impact, greater than two Super Bowls, at an estimated $597 million. More than 100,000 attendees from approximately 35 countries across the globe are expected at the 2017 Miami Boat Show, continuing to bolster tourism and put Miami on an international stage. The show directly employs 6,592 people full-time while supporting an estimated 55,000 jobs created by the Florida boating industry.
More Parking and Transportation Options
Come to the show by land or sea! With the popularity of park-and-ride in 2016 an estimated 80 percent of attendees parked at designated offsite locations and traveled to the show via shuttle bus or water taxi, the Miami Boat Show will offer seamless transportation to and from Miami Marine Stadium Park & Basin. With learnings from the first year at Miami Marine Stadium, the show has improved its transportation plan with even more efficiency including:
Water Taxis: The number of water taxis will increase by more than 47 percent in 2017. In addition, the capacity of water taxis will increase, holding from 50 to 350 people, larger than most of the water taxis used during the 2016 show. Water taxi pick-up and drop-off locations will be streamlined from seven to four– American Airlines Arena, the Hyatt in downtown Miami, the W Hotel (formerly Viceroy) in downtown Miami on Brickell, and Bayfront Park (Strictly Sail location) – to meet the high demand for water transportation. More and larger water taxis concentrated on fewer routes will provide frequent service to and from the Show.
Shuttle Buses: To meet the demand of show goers looking to get to and from the show quickly and easily, dozens of shuttle buses will circulate at all times from fewer locations than in 2016 to provide a more efficient transportation experience—getting more people to and from the show in less time. There are four departure locations throughout downtown Miami—Marlins Park, American Airlines Arena, the Hyatt in downtown Miami, and Bayfront Park (Strictly Sail location). An expanded shuttle service will also run between the Miami Boat Show and the Yachts Miami Beach show on Collins Avenue. What’s more, there will be new mini buses transporting show goers to and from parking on Virginia Key that will now operate with a direct route to and from the show’s front entrance rather than looping around the entire Rickenbacker Causeway.
Parking: Abundant parking options with an estimated 10,000 parking spaces, will again be available for show attendees in downtown Miami with easy access to water taxis and shuttle buses. Downtown lots include Marlins Park and American Airlines Arena. Reserve parking ahead of time at MiamiBoatShow.com.
Convenient parking on Virginia Key will again be available and can be reserved and prepaid in advance at MiamiBoatShow.com. Parking on Virginia Key will be designated in four key lots with general parking, exhibitor parking, new VIP & handicapped parking at the Miami Seaquarium, and valet parking near Whiskey Joe’s.

CULTRA brings a little more culture to downtown in the first-ever roving, outdoor open mic in Miami starting on Thursday, January 19, 2017.
A collaborative event series produced by Buskerfest Miami and Emerge Miami, CULTRA is an opportunity for local performers in all disciplines to showcase their skills for fellow Miamians in some of the most scenic public spaces Downtown Miami has to offer. On the third-Thursday of each month, January to May 2017, CULTRA will be held in one of the Downtown Miami parks in an effort to put the “public†back in public spaces and foster connections between attendees and our precious bayfront.
The event begins with ninety minutes of open stage time followed by a feature performance by a well-known local group. Each edition of CULTRA will be a collaboration with one of Miami’s other prominent, long-running open mics and include a guest host. Artistic Vibes, who produces one of Miami’s longest-running weekly open mics, will host the inaugural CULTRA event on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at Tina Hills Pavilion in Bayfront Park. Future dates of CULTRA are February 16, March 16, April 20 and May 18.

Dogs featured in prominently in Art Deco life. The love of all things streamlined influenced the popularity of certain breeds in the ‘20s and ‘30s with images of greyhounds, borzois and salukis. the Dance Community Outreach series of Ballet For Young People (BFYP) programming with an outdoor performance by the MCB School Ensemble in the City of Doral’s Downtown Park at 6:00pm. Thanks to the City of Doral, this family-friendly performance is free and open to the public.
On the program is the delightful “Carnival of the Animals: The Swansong†featuring the humorous music of Camille Saint-Saëns and a colorful cast of dancing animals, choreographed by MCB School faculty members Rafael Maldonado-Lopez and Geta Constantinescu. Throughout the performance, the audience will get an interactive look at the storyline of the ballet and learn about the movements of
dance.
This is the first of many performances of MCB’s signature community outreach program during its 2016-17 season. The goal of BFYP is to broaden MCB’s audience base and expose kids to the world of ballet. Most BFYP performances are specifically held for school children in the tri-county area, although a few are open to the public. Last year, over 6,000 schoolkids were able to attend BFYP performances.

Michel Laprise
Michel Laprise worked in theatre for nine years as an actor, director and artistic director before joining Cirque du Soleil in 2000. At Cirque du Soleil, Michel spent fi ve years as a talent scout before taking on, in 2006, the role of Special Events Designer. In that capacity, he directed the act with Quebec diva Diane Dufresne during the Opening Ceremonies of the Montreal 2006 Outgames; the large-scale performance event created for the launch of the Fiat Bravo in Italy (2007); the Cirque du Soleil performance event celebrating Quebec City’s 400th anniversary (2008); the launch of Microsoft’s Kinect console at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo, broadcast on MTV; the opening show at the Eurovision Song Contest held in Russia in 2009; and the Opening Ceremonies of the 2010 FIBA International Basketball Federation World Championships in Istanbul. In 2012, Michel collaborated with pop star Madonna, providing artistic direction for her performance at the Super Bowl XLVI halftime show; he later went on to direct her MDNA tour. In 2013, he directed the musical Robin des Bois – Ne renoncez jamais which toured in Europe. Michel co-wrote and directed the VR movie “Kurios : Inside the Box” which won 3 prizes, one of them being the Emmy Daytime award in the Outstanding Interactive Media category. The Florida International University Department of Architecture’s Eco Couture Recycling Fashion Show will launch its successful event for a third year in a row. The fashion show will feature a variety of outfits that are completely made from recycled materials. The event, which was created with the purpose of promoting sustainability through fashion, strives to educate and inspire the community about good recycling habits and an environmentally-friendly lifestyle. The two-day event, which kicks off on February 6-7, 2016 attracts collectors, vendors, dealers, designers and consumers from across the U.S. in search of the wildly popular and rare machine-pressed, tinted glassware , some of which was mass-produced in America during the Great Depression from the 1920s through the 1940s. Thanks to the new sparked interested of wedding planners and brides from all over the country started by design expert Martha Stewart & food guru Paula Deen when they both began highlighting these American treasures throughout 2015 in their magazines and TV shows – this year’s event is expected to be bigger than ever!
As Depression glass has grown in popularity, certain colors and patterns have become scarce and hard to find. The Annual Vintage Glass, Pottery and Dinnerware Show & Sale is known as the ultimate treasure hunt for collectors throughout seeking sought after designs, exquisite pieces and rarities that range in value from a few dollars to up to several hundred dollars. The glass, rich with historic significance, is displayed in well-appointed homes across the U.S. and recently has become a major trend in wedding décor used to add color, whimsy and a vintage feel.

About Depression Glass
Depression glass is clear or colored translucent glassware that was distributed free, or at low cost, in the United States and Canada around the time of the Great Depression. The Quaker Oats Company, and other food manufacturers and distributors, put a piece of glassware in boxes of food, as an incentive to purchase. Movie theaters and businesses would hand out a piece simply for coming in the door. Most of this glassware was made in the Ohio River Valley of the United States, where access to raw materials and power made manufacturing inexpensive in the first half of the twentieth century. More than twenty manufacturers made more than 100 patterns, and entire dinner sets were made in some patterns. Common colors are clear (crystal), pink, pale blue, green, and amber. Depression Glass has been highly collectible since the 1960s. Due to its popularity, Depression Glass is becoming more scarce on the open market. Rare pieces that were once handed out free may now sell for several hundred dollars. Some manufacturers continued to make popular patterns after World War II, or introduced similar patterns, which are also collectible. Popular and expensive patterns and pieces have been reproduced, and reproductions are still being made today.

YoungArts Alumnus Jason Moran (1993 Winner in Jazz) is bringing an inspired blend of jazz, skateboarding and new media to the YoungArts Campus. Knight Foundation, where Moran will meet iconic street skater and childhood hero Mark Gonzales (also known as “Gonz†or “The Gonzâ€) for the first time. The “Seal Swim†experience includes an interactive educational segment and a 15-20 minute swim with harbor seals in the park’s seal exhibit pool. The program provides a unique in-water interaction where you’ll swim freely alongside the seals as well as receive hugs, kisses, and take part in a fun training session with these inquisitive marine mammals.
Dolphin Odyssey is a two-hour experience, which includes feeding, touching and learning about these magnificent animals plus the opportunity for a deep-water interaction with a dolphin. Guests must be at least 52 inches tall to participate in the Dolphin Odyssey program
Dolphin Encounter is the program that allows guests to wade out into the pool and have a shallow water experience meeting the dolphins. The two-hour program features an educational seminar and the chance to feed and touch a dolphin as well as learn about dolphin training techniques. Dolphin Encounter participants must be at least five years of age and for those children under 9 years, an older sibling or adult must accompany the child as a participant
The Sea Trek Reef Encounter is an underwater helmet diving experience that allows guests to dive 15 feet below the surface of the water in the 300,000 gallon reef aquarium and be eye to eye with marine life. Feels like walking on the moon, only you are submerged in a surreal underwater paradise where colorful tropical fish, large groupers, lobsters, cownose stingrays and moray eels abound. Sea Trekking can be experienced by non-divers, ages 10 and above.

Tickets for loitering will not be issued here while this talented and playful street art team transforms the west-facing wall of 1909 Harrison Street in Downtown Hollywood in just a few weeks. The community welcomes Chaz and Bob Gibson, aka “The London Policeâ€, to the neighborhood as the creators of the 12th DHMP wall mural. The community is looking forward to seeing the artful enhancement this British duo has in store. All are invited to join a “Live Painting Performance” with TLP at the mural site on Saturday night, September 27th from 7-10pm.
The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project is successfully rounding its second year with an impressive roster of artists including Daniel Fila a.k.a. “Kraveâ€, David “Lebo” LeBatard, Jessy Nite, Luis Pinto, Edward Mendieta, Ruben Ubiera, 2alas, Evoca1, Michelle Weinberg and Tati Suarez, all who have contributed amazing work to the community. Selected by a review committee, the project invites artists whose mural proposals promote health, happiness, and well-being.
When asked about the mural he and his partner are gearing up to begin next month, artist Chaz Gibson tells us, “We always try to project a positive theme in our pieces. Our signature characters have happy faces and are depicted doing everyday things in the world they live in. In this particular piece one of our characters is making adjustments to the aquarium he is looking after. As we are near the sea we threaded an aquatic theme with science and nature with an overall moral of looking after each other.”
The duo has clearly come up with a mural concept that speaks to Hollywood and incorporates attributes that this community can connect with. “We love the idea of the aquatic theme and the fact that the mural will promote togetherness. That is what Hollywood is all about and The London Police really get that about usâ€, remarks Lisa Liotta, Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency’s Operations Manager.
Since inception, The Downtown Hollywood Mural Project has garnered the attention of locals, visitors and art enthusiasts alike. Giselle Perez, a realtor in Miami comments on her experience, “The live mural painting events are really quite awesome to attend! No two events have been similar and each artist brings their own vibe. My friends and I come up from Miami for a bite to eat at one of the eclectic eateries on Hollywood Blvd. or Harrison Street. We pop into a few of the crafty boutiques and art galleries and really enjoy walking the streets to see the mural walls throughout the downtown. Often times, the artists have added or change something, which is always a nice surprise! The live mural performances are really fun to attend. Meeting new people who have an appreciation for art and community is always a good time!â€

The Fringe
The “Fringe†is a set of curated activations of Downtown Miami in the form of visual and performance art projects. The visual art projects are commissioned, site-specific public art installations, curated by a specialist contemporary art curator Amanda Sanfilippo, and located within a one-mile radius around the Hub for easy walkability. This year’s Fringe has been initiated in partnership with Miami Dade County’s Art in Public Places.
The Events
Throughout the three day weekend, over 60 different art organizations, culture organizations, non-profits and artists activate their spaces with exhibitions, performances, cocktails meet and greet, art talks, panels and more. New for 2014 is an increased family friendly programming and children activities to accommodate the growing number of families living in Downtown.
Realizing the lack of performing arts in last year’s mix of events, the Miami DDA, in collaboration with the Olympia Theatre, is debuting a series of performance pieces in public areas and venues all around Downtown

Young Performers Light Up the Night for Young Talent Big Dreams Finals

Before beginning his original spoken word piece for the Young Talent Big Dreams finals, David Woodward paused in front of the microphone and closed his eyes, seeming to disappear.
Then he opened his eyes and launched his emotional performance, a fusion of words and gestures that spoke of the frustration and sometimes fury of the many boys and young men in Woodward’s Little Havana neighborhood who seek to rise above their poverty and shatter the stereotypes that weigh against them.
For his originality and creativity, Woodward, a 16-year-old junior and one of the top writers in his AP English course at SLAM Miami Charter Middle/High School, was named the overall Grand Prize Winner of Young Talent Big Dreams. This year marked the fourth and most ambitious rendition of the countywide talent contest, coordinated by the Actor’s Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre and sponsored by The Children’s Trust.
The cadre of judges, all professional artists or art critics, chose Woodward over a host of amazingly talented young musicians, dancers, composers and wordsmiths performing in a range of categories, both individual and group. For the top prize, Woodward received $500 in cash and a free trip for two – air fare, hotel and passes – to attend the live American Idol finale in Los Angeles, CA, courtesy of WSVN CH7.
Woodward, who’s been rhyming, rapping and creating original poetry since elementary school, credited his English teacher, Crystal Espinosa, at SLAM for helping him craft his award-winning performance piece. With her guidance, he revised the piece more than twenty times, working steadily on it for more than a month.
“Though I like to write, I wasn’t much of a reader before. The experience of competing in YTBD really taught me about perfecting my writing craft,†said Woodward, nicknamed the “silent assassin†by his classmates for the riveting power and precision infused in his work.
Winners were chosen for each of the categories, and 27 acts competed in all in the finals held Saturday, May 3 at the Actor’s Playhouse. These contestants were selected from the hundreds that participated over the past four months in the total seven auditions held at venues around the county.
“Every year the talent gets better and better, and the dreams get bigger and bigger for this competition,†said Charles M. Auslander, president and CEO of The Children’s Trust, adding that “The Trust is dedicated to helping to encourage the dreams of the children of Miami-Dade County.
Throughout the finals night as he has at all the auditions, emcee Earl Maulding kept the audience caffeinated with his infectious good humor as he sang the high praises of the performers who were competing and those who auditioned over the past few months.
¨These kids are just beyond believing. For many of them this contest is the first time that they walk onto a stage for an audition, but to hear and see them – you’d never know it. Their talents – and courage – are just off the charts,†commented Maulding, who directs the Young Audiences Theatre at Actors’ Playhouse.
Individual first-place winners in each category received $200. Ysabella Reyes, a 10-year-old who studies dance at Dance Hall and who dreams of becoming a ballroom dancer and choreographer wooed judges with her Individual Dance performance. Abdias L. Armenteros, a 9th grade student at Miami Union Academy took top prize in Individual Musical Instrument with his spirited saxophone performance. In the relatively new category for Individual Original Composition, Javmar Perez-Contreras, a 14-year-old pianist who attends Pinecrest Preparatory Middle High School, won first prize in stiff competition.
Carolina Rivero, an 8th-grader at St. Thomas the Apostle, delivered a spirited rendition of Adele’s “Rolling in the Deep†to win Individual Vocal Pop/Rock/Rap. Judges awarded top prize for Individual Vocal Theatre/Jazz/Classical to Amanda Gonzalez-Piloto, a freshman vocalist at the New World School of the Arts, who delighted the audience with her version of “Taylor the Latte Boy.â€
In Bands competition, One Love, comprised of five young musicians – Carina Ubinas, 15, Joshua Paulus-Rosenow, 15, Carlos Ubinas, 14, Michael Ubinas, 11, and Gabriela Ubinas, 9 – who’ve been performing together just a few months, took top prize. Each musician received $50. In Group Dance, Monica Delgado, an 8th grader at Coral Way K-8, and Anne Wright, an 8th grader at Westminister Christian School, won top honors and $100 each. Both are dancers with the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet. Imani Coker, 16, and Naya Schere, 17, won top honors for Group Musical Instrument for their viola duet. Both are musicians in Coral Reef Senior High’s Orchestra Magnet. The two also received $100 each.
All category winners received master classes taught by local professionals and opportunities to attend a range of professional performances over the coming year; a pair of subscriptions to the Actors’ Playhouse 2014-15 Mainstage Season; local restaurant certificates; and professional headshots for their portfolios from Alberto Romeu Photography. The Individual Dance Winner also received a full scholarship to the Thomas Armour Youth Ballet.
Judges for the finals performance included: David Arisco, artistic director at Actors’ Playhouse; Lynn Martinez, WSVN CH7 News Anchor; Mary Carmen Catoya, Principal Dancer, Miami City Ballet; Howard Cohen, Features Writer, The Miami Herald; Natalie Lewis-Schere, Co-Founder and Executive Director of PATH; and Joel Someillan, Award-winning musical producer of Nickelodeon’s Dora The Explorer and Go Diego Go! TV shows.
Early in the evening, Actors’ Playhouse executive producing director Barbara Stein welcomed local dignitaries and graciously thanked the many event sponsors. At the end of the night, the stage was filled with beaming contestants, purple Finalist medallions swinging at their necks. Stein’s welcome words still echoed in the confettied air.

Miami, FL…Big Brother is coming to South Beach. On Saturday, March 22, casting producers from the popular reality show will personally audition potential participants for season 16 of Big Brother, scheduled to air this summer on CBS. Auditions will take place from noon to 3 pm at the Cameo nightclub, 1445 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach.
The producers promise to meet everyone who shows up for the audition by 3 PM. Callbacks will take place the following week.
Big Brother follows a group of strangers living together in a house outfitted with dozens of cameras and microphones that record their every move 24 hours a day, seven days a week. One by one, the House Guests vote each other out of the house until at the end of three months, the last remaining House Guest wins the grand prize.

The Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival is full of activities for kids and families. The Kid’s Village offers free art projects, musical workshops, story time, kids’ yoga, a playground, games and all kinds of creative exploration all day long! Children ages 12 and under are admitted to the festival for free.
The event is in many ways a ‘lifestyle festival’ with a holistic approach to entertainment that engages all of the senses. In partnership with the Zen Village of Coconut Grove, the Festival’s Healing Arts Area offers daily workshops in various lineages of Yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, traditional dance, healing drumming, and more wellness practices. Practitioners of various healing modalities such as massage, Reiki, reflexology, and more offer their services throughout the day in a lovely shaded grove along the water.
Festival-goers have the opportunity to engage with legendary musicians and instructors at numerous Music and Dance Workshops. Musical workshop highlights include; World Drumming, Banjo & Fiddle, and Native Flute. Dance workshops for all levels take place prior to performances in the 10,000 square foot wood floored Dance Tent, including Bachata, Salsa, and Zydeco instruction. At Miami’s Scratch DJ Academy Booth, participants of all ages can try their hand at DJ-ing with instruction from world-renowned DJs and teachers.
Environmental sustainability and ecological preservation are at the heart of the event. The Sustainability Fair & Expo is an interactive model of engagement between South Florida businesses and festival attendees. Over the course of the weekend Green Businesses, featuring sustainable services and products work alongside non-profits to promote a sustainable future for Miami. There will be solar demos, bio-diesel education, urban farming workshops, and more. The Festival also has a mission of creating Zero Waste, with recycling and compost stations setup throughout the event. Biking to the festival is encouraged! The GrassRoots organization is deeply committed to building relationships in the community. The cornerstone of these local partnerships is the Roots in the Schools collaborative outreach program. In the week leading up to the event, The Virginia Key GrassRoots Festival brings musicians into local schools for musical performances, classroom presentations, workshops, hands on experience and cultural enrichment. Held on the pristine sands of the Historic Virginia Key Beach Park, camping is available on the main festival grounds, just steps from the sparkling Atlantic Ocean. Virginia Key is a short ride from downtown Miami, but is quiet and secluded from the hustle and bustle of the city, creating the perfect setting for this one-of-a-kind festival. To top off a week’s worth of scholarly lectures and cultural events celebrating William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, Barry University’s Fine Arts Department proudly presents, “Romeo and Juliet.†All are welcome and theater goers will enjoy this adaptation of the world’s most beloved romantic tragedy interpreted by student performers and under the direction of John Manzelli, Assistant Professor of Theatre at Barry University, and Antonio Amadeo, Associate Artistic Director of the Naked Stage. The show will run from October 23 – 27, 2013 with a post-show discussion taking place immediately following the October 24th performance. Cirque du Soleil is a company that has been around for many years entertaining and enamoring an array of diverse crowds and cultures around the world. I have had the privilege to dig seriously into the mesmerizing world of these romantic, comedic, dramatic and poetically-mastered acrobatic stories that have touched the hearts and lives of many. In the search for some answers, I have come across the most fascinating facts, and have compiled a few pieces of information about the shows and the history of Cirque du Soleil.
An interview with Cirque du Soleil’s spokesperson:
Tell us a little bit about how a show is born…what are the first pieces of inspired thoughts, and the actions taken thereafter to put those pieces together to make those ideas come to life? Â
First comes the creative spark in the genius mind of the Director of Creation. It could be an image, a song, a feeling… anything! A team, including the World’s top Creators in each field, is then put together to bring these ideas to life. Â
How is then a program arranged or coordinated along with all the logistics?Â
The Creation process of a Cirque du Soleil show averages 13 months! During that time a lot happens simultaneously; creation, casting, production, rehearsals. So much happens that it is hard to describe. I would say the best way to experience it is to watch the Emmy Award winning series “Fire Within†following the creation of Cirque du Soleil VAREKAI.
Besides the performers, how many other people are involved in the production/behind-the-scenes to put on a Cirque du Soleil show?Â
On Quidam we have 45 performers coming from 20 different countries and 45 crew members. Show technicians, cooks, sport medicine therapists, truck drivers, accountants…altogether the Quidam family requires 90 people from 25 countries to make the magic happen. Â
What inspired this upcoming show, Quidam, in particular? Â
Franco Dragone had spearheaded several Cirque du Soleil productions and wanted to explore a new dimension; real life, real characters, real emotions. This time around Cirque du Soleil brings you into the imaginary world of a little girl, Zoé.
What is the intention, not just with Quidam, but with all the previous, current and future stories performed by Cirque du Soleil…is it more entertaining, or is intention more towards connecting with the audience at an emotional level?
Cirque du Soleil is dedicated to the creation, production and performance of artistic works whose mission is to invoke the imagination, provoke the senses and evoke the emotions of people around the world.
What can we expect from this show that could, perhaps, be different from all the other shows we have seen to date?
Quidam is a beautiful, emotional haunting production. Instead of putting on stage fantastical creatures, Quidam visits a world where eccentric characters take the shape of humans with real life concerns and emotions.
Would you like to share something in particular about the main character of this story, or about the storyline of Quidam?
The great thing with Quidam is, it is very theatrical but the storyline is not force-fed to the audience, therefore you might be sitting next to a person that sees a completely different meaning behind the imagery of Quidam depending on their own life story. I always love to eardrop on conversation as the crown leaves the show – you hear the best show reviews and interpretations!

In the chaotic decade following the Civil War, a group of young ex-slaves in Nashville, Tennessee, set out on a mission to save their financially troubled school by giving concerts. Traveling first through cities in the North, then on to venues across Europe, the Jubilee Singers introduced audiences to the power of spirituals—religious anthems of slavery. Driven to physical collapse and even death, the singers proved more successful —and more inspirational—than anyone could have imagined. WHO: Chirino began his artistic career in Miami, releasing his first album in 1974. Since then, he has recorded over 20 albums, several of which have attained platinum and gold status. In 2006, his album “Son del Almaâ€, won a Grammy for Best Salsa/Merengue Album. As founder of the Willy Chirino Foundation, his philanthropic efforts have been recognized by UNICEF and the Department of State. He celebrated his 35th anniversary in music with his latest released album “Willy Chirino Live-35th Anniversary†(“Willy Chirino En Vivo-35 Aniversarioâ€), a CD/DVD combo of the concert. This album brought him his first nomination for Best Salsa Album at the 2007 Latin Grammy Awards. Most recently, Chirino and his wife, singer/song writer Lissette Alvarez, released their first album together, Amarraditos (Bound to One Another). The CD includes a potpourri of classic Spanish-language love songs. Chirino’s latest album, “Pa’lante”, was released at spring 2008, after which he launched a world tour.

Pulse is a once-a-year cross-genre event at the New World Center. Pulse 2.0 featured Miami-based DJ Sean Drake who joined the New World Symphony for an amazingly unique musical night. Pulse also featured a vocalist for the first time – world renowned-native Miami soprano Elaine Alvarez, her celestial voice reverberated throughout the adoring crowd  The event was designed to integrate contemporary classical music with electronic music into an evening-long presentation to help attract new audiences to the art form. Mission accomplished, Pulse. The crowd was an eclectic mix of Miami socialites, icons, art fanciers, musicians and music lovers.
DJ Sean Drake was spinning lounge music in between the two sets of classical music, the first which featured music by American composers, and the second by Latin-American composers. The night concluded with DJ Drake’s last set—an surreal dance party in the main performance hall. It was a blast and a half! Definitely looking forward to Pulse 3.0.

As part of Art Basel 2012 and Miami Art Week, Etra Fine Art in Miami’s Design District, presents a “Winter Group Show†exhibiting the works of: Rainer Lagemann, Christian Awe, Douglass Freed, Hunt Slonem, and Mario Velez. The Opening Reception takes place on Saturday, December 8, 2012 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. and the exhibit runs through January 11, 2013.
Encapsulating the spirit of Miami, this exhibit represents a microcosm of the variety of art presented to us at the peak of art season. From the hollow, metal squares that Rainer Lagemann (Germany) uses to sculpt the human form – a framework of the spirit and image of the body; the “resurrection of color†that restores emotional drama to abstraction found in Christian Awe’s (Berlin) paintings; landscapes by Douglass Freed (US) who names his paintings “structures†where shapes are fitted together to create a coherent whole; works of internationally renowned American artist Hunt Slonem who experiments with a unique method of cross-hatching to texturize his works; and Colombian artist Mario Velez, a minimalist artist who has been greatly inspired by the Bauhaus approach to design. This group show is a schema of all that the city has to offer in its unique, cultural diversity.

About the Artists Presented:
Rainer Lagemann was born in Düsseldorf, Germany on September 14th, 1959. Studies and practice in interior design and welding began in Berkeley, California. Since 2008, he has resided and worked in Miami. Rainer is fascinated by the human body, the classic theme of artistic expression and struggle, depicted in all shapes, materials and mediums since the existence of mankind. His sculpture captures the human body in motion–a freeze frame of classic, timeless gestures and emotions. The sculptures are both ethereal and concrete. The forms he creates are how one imagines a Nureyev or Baryshnikov would look in mid-flight.
Christian Awe began his painting career as an urban expressionist painter on the streets of Berlin in the early 90s. At the Berlin Universität der Künste he studied under Georg Baselitz and received his “Meisterschüler“ in 2006 under Daniel Richter. As artist-in-residence at Princeton University, Awe taught experimental painting in Princeton in 2011. This year, he serves as Board Member for “The Young Mesopotamians“ who mentors and teaches young Iraqi artists at Baghdad University’s College of Fine Arts. Awes paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction and astound with expressive color. He employs spray paint and acrylics, ink and watercolors, markers and oil pastels. Through scraping, ripping or even digging out entire chunks of color, he exposes hidden layers resting beneath, allowing them to resurface as poetic pictorial spaces.
Douglass Freed’s undergraduate and graduate degrees are from Fort Hays State University. He is represented by galleries in New York City, Boston, Miami, Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Charleston, St. Louis and Kansas City. Freed was the Director of the Daum Museum of Contemporary Art at State Fair Community College until his retirement in February, 2008 and helped build the Daum Museum collection from 200 objects to over 800 since its opening. For nearly twenty years, he has made non-objective grid structured paintings. He has literalized those references by painting oil landscape vistas of horizons, clouds and bodies of water. These paintings consist of two or more vertical panels where one panel is landscape imagery and adjacent panels are often atmospheric voids with vestiges of recognizable landscapes.
Hunt Slonem – Since 1977, Slonem has had more than 350 exhibitions at prestigious galleries and museums internationally. More than 100 museums include his work in their collections, among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He has been commissioned to paint large-scale murals for the Bryant Park Grill, New York City and the former World Trade Center, NYC. He is recipient of the prestigious “Stars of Design†award, the Greenshields Foundation award, and the National Endowment for the Arts Grant in 1991. He studied painting at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Skowhegan, Maine and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. For years, Slonem has been experimenting with a unique method of texturizing his works where he scrapes through multiple layers of wet paint using the whittled end of a paint brush handle. He describes it as a feeling of tapestry like weaving where he makes colors bleed into each other allowing light to come through so one can see five levels of paint, instead of one.
Mario Velez lives and works in Medellin, Colombia. He received his Bachelors of Arts degree at the National University of Colombia and Masters at the Hochschule der Künstein in Berlin. His work has been exhibited in solo and group shows in New York, Miami, California, Panama, Colombia, Japan, Austria Switzerland, Italy, Mexico, and Germany. His commissioned work includes corporate and public collections such as Inter-American Development Bank, Washington D.C.; Bloomingdales, New York; Ritz Carlton, Bangalore, India; Museum of Latin American Art, Los Angeles, CA; Museo de Arte Moderno, Medellin, Colombia; and Galleria Armory-Arte Contemporanea, Perugia, Italy. Velez’ work both identifies and emancipates itself from two of the most identifiable characteristics of 20th century abstract art — one part structural geometric, austere — the other emotional, intuitive and organic. His work has been described as, “simplified geometric forms and the fine lines that traverse them creating an autonomous world that moves in a field created by the [works] themselves.â€

Primary Projects announces its December exhibition program, launching contemporaneously with Art Basel Miami Beach 2012 during one of the most important art weeks in the country. In a two-part, two-venue initiative, curators Books IIII Bischof, Chris Oh and Typoe present Raneytown, a solo exhibit by Rebeca Raney that will metamorphose Primary Projects gallery into a rainbow-coated site. With drawings and sculpture, this show also comprises a pop-up boutique unveiling Raney’s first collection produced in collaboration with Madewell. By contrast, the Wynwood satellite space, Asif’s Guns by Asif Farooq, aims to simulate a gun shop with more than 300 firearms handcrafted from cardboard. Designed to illicit disparate impulses, Raneytown and Asif’s Guns will take viewers on an emotional rollercoaster.
Raneytown is a transformative, joyful show by Miami native, New York-based artist Rebeca Raney. With a world depicted in more than 250 ink and gouache drawings and works on panel, present in the artist’s playful imagery of hybrid animals, flora and fantastical people is the compelling wish for her two-dimensional drawings to come to life. Raney’s earnest conviction that the characters which inhabit her drawings must exist “in the flesh†has yielded a populace of sculptures that cavort, take baths, and suspend from the ceiling in booby-traps of their own making. A looming 10-foot “Plant Person†will preside over the havoc.
In a special collaboration with Madewell, Raney’s imagery will also debut in a limited edition fashion collection at Primary Projects, and at Madewell stores in Miami, New York and Los Angeles. Raney’s signature backwards-facing llamas and intricate floral elements provide the inspiration for a luxurious cashmere sweater, pendant necklace, silk top, scarf and custom leather transport tote. Dubbed “Boutique by Raneytown,†the gallery’s pop-up will feature the complete Rebeca Raney x Madewell collection, along with treasures including bronze figurines, hand-painted paper rocks, letterpress stationary and more, ranging from $20 – $900.

Can you imagine an alligator in the bay the size of a football field? It is going to be the largest art project since Christo had the "surrounded islands" in 1983, guaranteed to create a media stir. Art Basal is the most-attended art show in the United States. Miami becomes a mecca for art lovers and tourists. Not just on Miami Beach but nearly every gallery in downtown Miami’s flourishing art center, Wynwood, Coral Gables, Coconut Grove, South Beach all staging their own shows. How does everyone get from here to there but by going across Biscayne Bay.
The "Gator" project will be unique because it is right there for everyone to see it. Residents who normally wouldn’t be going to Art Basal, all of the cruise passengers in and out of the Port of Miami and very importantly, students from all grades. This giant Gator will highlight awareness for the Florida Everglades. We have made arrangements with the public schools to have the middle and senior high students bused in to see the project and receive a printed pamphlet, explaining the importance the Everglades has to the eco-system.
The head is being built on the west coast of Florida. It will be quite a production, 30 feet high. It will come over here by way of Alligator Alley, what else? Then the "head" will be on a moving barge and will go to some fund-raising parties. Then when it is in Biscayne Bay, 6,500 floating art tiles of Everglades scenes will be mounted to create the body and tail.
The floating tiles will be in sections of 102 images each, images of 30 years of photography by noted artist/photographer Lloyd Goradesky. The Kayak Club of Florida International University will take the sections out. This will be a media event as the alligator comes to life right in Biscayne Bay.
The State of Florida is filming it for the Visit Forida website.
A portion of all proceeds will be donated to TREEmendous Miami, which has planted more than 23,000 trees in the past fourteen years. TREEmendous Miami is a non-profit, 501(C) 3 organization. More than 6,000 high school and college students have earned Community Service hours by volunteering with TREEmendous Miami.
One of the things they will receive is worldwide publicity as we’ve already been in a Parisian paper. discovery Channel is filming it, and Visit Florida is putting it on its website. So I guess, presenting sponsor for $50,000 with banners placed on the outside wall of the DoubleTree Hotel, upscale party at DoubleTree,, invitation to all the Gator parties at swanky places. Listed on all material and publicity. Opportunity to speak at launching. This is the largest cultural event in the United States and work our way down from there.
Also this is educational as kids will get material on being "green" and the importance of the Everglades. The head of Gator will be on a flatbed and come across Alligator Alley. It is thirty feet high and fifty feet long. Then it will go on a barge and go into the water.
After it reaches the Woman’s Club/the tiles will be put on to create the body and tail. There will be a processional with this, FIU Kayakers will take out each section of art tiles with a paragraph read as it goes out, sponsors will be able to actually participate by attaching a section of tile. A major sponsor will travel by boat to attach the very last tile out in the bay. They have a chance to be a part of history.

Pridelines Youth Candlelight Vigil Against Bullying

Pridelines Youth Services and hundreds of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning (LGBTQ) youth and their straight friends and allies will come together at the Miami Beach Community Church for the 3rd annual Spirit Day Candlelight Vigil. This national event remembers the thousands of teen suicides which take place every year and provides an opportunity to speak out against bullying and in support of LGBTQ youth. Participants are encouraged to wear purple and join Pridelines and its partner organizations for this inspirational event on Lincoln Road Mall.
“It is unconscionable that so many LGBTQ teens take their lives because of the incessant bullying and harassment they experience due to their sexual orientation or gender identity,†said Pridelines Youth Council President Bryan Gutierrez. “This year we will also be remembering Malala Yousufzai, the Pakistani teenager who was gunned down by the same hate and intolerance that threatens teens in here in Florida.â€
The vigil is free and open to the entire community. Pridelines is calling on all people of good conscience to come to Lincoln Road Mall and join the stand against intolerance and in support of South Florida’s gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth.
In addition to the remembrance, Miami Beach City Commissioner Michael Gongora will be presenting Pridelines with a City of Miami Beach proclamation in recognition of the organization’s 30 years of service to the youth of South Florida.
Pridelines Youth Services is a grassroots 501(c)(3) non-profit organization created by gay youth for gay youth and their allies in the wake of Anita Bryant’s “Save Our Children†campaign. Pridelines’ mission is to support, educate and empower South Florida’s LGBTQ youth in a safe and diverse environment as well as to foster dialogue and cultivate social change. For more than 28 years, Pridelines has provided safe space, social support, skills building, leadership development and referrals to mental health, health care and support services for LGBTQ youth and their straight allies between the ages of 13 and 24.
