Stage Mother, a new comedy-drama starring Oscar-nominated Jacki Weaver (Silver Linings Playbook, Animal Kingdom), Adrian Grenier (Entourage, The Devil Wears Prada) and Emmy-Nominated Lucy Liu (Charlie’s Angels, Elementary, Ally McBeal), will kick-off the 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival on Thursday, August 20, at 7 p.m. This special OUTshine Opening Night Drive-OUT preview at Dezerland Drive-In in North Miami (the film will be released to the public on August 21) will launch a celebration of diversity and equality with 80 thought-provoking films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) accessible via 44 screenings available from August 20 – 30, 2020. A livestreamed Q& A session will follow the film.

Stage Mother tells the story of Maybelline (Jacki Weaver), a conservative Texas church-choir director who inherits her recently deceased son’s drag club. She surprises her closed-minded husband and everyone else she knows by moving alone to San Francisco to save the club from bankruptcy. In this raucous, racy new environment, she begins to open-up and finds new meaning for her life, even becoming a mother-figure to the club’s flamboyant performers. In addition to Adrian Grenier and Lucy Liu, the film also stars, Mya Taylor (Tangerine) and the legendary Jackie Beat.

Stage Mother was a winner of the Best of the Fest Audience Vote at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and winner of the Next Wave Award from the Provincetown International Film Festival.

In addition to Stage Mother, this year’s virtual line-up includes Centerpiece film The Goddess of Fortune (La Dea Fortuna) (Italy), Drama-Comedy on August 26 at 7 p.m.; a Ladies Shorts Package Night on August 22 at 5 p.m., a Men’s Shorts Package Night on August 23 at 5 p.m.; a South Florida Speaks – Shorts Program on August 30 at 5 p.m., Closing Night film Single Street (Singel 39) (Netherlands), Comedy on August 30 a 7 p.m.; and two FREE Community Showings – Letters to Eloisa (USA), Drama on August 22 at 3 p.m. and TRANSformations – a Trans Shorts Package on August 29 at 3 p.m. A full list of films and descriptions can be found at outshinefilm.com/films/program. The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced Shane Duncan as its next featured act on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, August 20, at 5 p.m., on Facebook Live. Duncan will be accompanied on vocals by Tiffany Rosario. The virtual show will begin with a new wine preview as part of The Capital Grille’s The Generous Pour – Summer Wine Tasting Event.

Shane Duncan is a high energy entertainer performing a variety of music genres including Top 40, country, rock, dance, disco and oldies. Over the last 15 years, he has played all over the country and dazzled audiences with his repertoire of over 450 songs.

Launched in April on Facebook Live, Happy Hour with The Galleria has successfully entertained thousands in the local community during the COVID-19 quarantine. Duncan will join previous Happy Hour with The Galleria virtual music performers Eddie Bustamante, Nathalie Nesh and Beto Rubineli, Manny Diquez, Carly Jo Jackson, Alexander Star, The Tim Charron Band and Tori Rossi Music and WILL PLUS. The 22nd edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival, a bi-annual film festival whose mission is to unite the community through social events and LGBTQ+ media that inspire, entertain, and educate, is going virtual! For the first time in the organization’s history, 80 new contemplative, comedic and creative films from 20 countries, (many never-seen-before and not available on any streaming platform) with 44 screenings will be made available to viewers throughout the state of Florida from August 20 – 30, 2020. The festival will also host livestreamed special events with cocktail happy hours, talent and Q & A sessions as a way to virtually tie the community together.

In keeping with social distancing guidelines and community safety, this year’s festival kicks off on August 20 at 7 p.m. with OUTshine’s Opening Night Drive-OUT, a preview of Stage Mother, at the Drive-In Theater at Dezerland Park (14401 NE 19th Avenue, North Miami, FL 33181). The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale, recognized as Broward County’s premier shopping destination, has announced Fender artist and Latin Grammy Award winner Manny Diquez as its next featured performer on Happy Hour with The Galleria, a virtual music series, scheduled for Thursday, June 18, at 5 p.m., on Facebook Live. He will perform a variety of alternative, classic rock and popular covers from Oasis, Cat Stevens, Stevie Wonder, The Spin Doctors, The Beatles, REM, Bob Marley, Gnarls Barkley and Ben E. King.

Born in Trinidad & Tobago, raised in Venezuela and living in the United States since 2004, Manny Diquez is a versatile musical artist who has recorded more than 30 albums, many in both Spanish and English. He has won two Latin Grammy Awards as a musician and arranger in 2011 and was a 2012 Latin Grammy artist nominee for “Best Rock Song.” Diquez served as music director for networks including Univision and Telemundo and is a voting member of the Grammy Academy Awards and Latin Grammy Academy Awards. When he’s not in the studio. Diquez is a touring musician.

With a voice filled with grit and soul, Carly Jo Jackson brings the heat of the Florida sunshine to all she does. She has a vocal tone that is as infectious as her charismatic stage presence. She caught the attention of some big names in the music and entertainment business, opening shows for Michael McDonald (who also provided vocals on her recent EP), Kenny Loggins and Dennis Quaid and serving as a musical inspiration to Jeff Bridges who recently featured her on his Sleep Club website. Lips, the ultimate in drag dining, will once again present “A Night of Stars,” as the official kick-off fundraiser for the annual SMART Ride (Southern Most AIDS/HIV Ride 2020), a 165 Mile bicycle ride from Miami to Key West planned for this November.

Five celebrity guest servers will be dishing out great food and fun alongside Lips’ very own cast of characters as SMART Ride supporters are dazzled by divas. Chosen for their commitment to the annual bicycling event, Austin Bergman, Rene Cantu, Jeff Honour, Robert Moelius and Carol Moran will camp it up table by table to earn extra tips for the cause.

Lips will present it popular divas impersonator show with witty mistress of ceremonies Nicolette, who regularly hosts every Thursday and Friday nights plus Sunday brunches. Lips leading ladies will entertain as Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire, Rihanna and Pink with a special guest appearance by Michael Dean as Cher.

Funding Arts Broward (FAB!), a non-profit volunteer-based arts organization committed to preserving and cultivating the arts in Broward County, will present its fourth annual “Black & White: A Night At The Museum” friend-raiser. This elegant black and white themed cocktail party at NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale will feature an exhibit tour, live entertainment, light bites and a decadent dessert table.

Attendees will have the opportunity to experience both I Paint My Reality: Surrealism in Latin America, which is currently on display until June 30, 2020 and Happy! which runs until July 5, 2020 at the NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale.

I Paint My Reality: Surrealism in Latin America examines the manifestation of Surrealism in Latin America. Drawn exclusively from NSU Art Museum Fort Lauderdale’s in-depth collection of Latin American art and promised gifts from the Stanley and Pearl Goodman collection, the exhibition features works by Leonora Carrington, Frida Kahlo, Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta, Carlos Mérida, Wolfgang Paalen, Amelia Peláez, Rufino Tamayo, Joaquín Torres-García, Xul Solar and Remedios Varo, among others.

Organized by Museum Director and Chief Curator, Bonnie Clearwater, Happy! explores contemporary works that were produced with the aim to help the artist and/or viewers cope with personal trauma and daily frustrations Among the artists included in the exhibition are Mark Rothko, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Keith Haring, Tracey Emin, Christina Forrer, Takashi Murakami, Ernesto Neto, Yoko Ono, Richard Prince, Rob Pruitt, Ragnar Kjartansson, and Andy Warhol, among others.

After another tremendous year, TeamFootWorks, producers of the highly-anticipated Mercedes-Benz Corporate Run presented by Turkish Airlines, announced registration for the 2020 5K Run/Walk is in now open. With more than 38,000 participants in 2019, the race series will once again take over South Florida with three runs beginning in Fort Lauderdale on April 2, continuing in West Palm Beach on April 15 and concluding in Miami on April 23. The United Way (Broward County, Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade County) continues to be the annual race series’ charity partner. The series will donate $1 per race participant respectively to each city’s chapter.

“We are excited to be entering the 36th year of what has been an amazing health and wellness journey for thousands of race participants. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, and nothing sets the Holiday Season into full swing more than the lighting of Downtown Miami’s Christmas Tree. The iconic 50-foot tree that sits in the middle of Bayfront Park will serve as the center and focal point of the Bayskate roller-skating rink at Bayfront Holiday Village. On Saturday November 30, it will receive a celebrity filled countdown and illumination worthy of a million twinkling lights. South Florida celebrities and dignitaries will be on-hand to light the tree and set the LED animation into musical motion, including Mayor Francis Suarez of the City of Miami and Commissioner Joe Carollo, Chairman of the Bayfront Park Trust. The tree will trip the light fantastic to three different festive musical shows produced by Grammy winner, A.T. Molina, who is the original producer/creator of the Burrito Sabanero mix. Enrique Santos from Tu949 will join Sasha Jones, Consumer Investigative Reporter for NBC 6 and Alejandra Molina, News Anchor at Telemundo 51, to host the event, along with Santa Claus, who is scheduled to arrive in Miami fashion via a yacht. Together, they will make sure that this tree will continue to serve as Santa’s guiding light to Miami.

“This is a special tree, because after the initial lighting ceremony, we will have mini lighting ceremonies every night all the way through Christmas. Not just every night, but every hour,” says Tony Albelo, SWARM CEO and event organizer. Each night starting at 6PM, the park will become quiet, the music will rev up, and the tree will display one of the most beautifully animated light shows ever sequenced. Those who miss the initial tree-lighting ceremony on November 30, will have an opportunity to experience it again and again while enjoying hot cocoa and churros or sipping seasonal cocktails such as the Peppermint Mojito, Mistletoe Mule, White Christmas Margarita or Winter Bourbon Smash at the North Pole Beach Club.

The lighting of the 50-ft animated tree at Bayfront Holiday Village will mark the opening of this picture-perfect, outdoor, holiday venue filled with larger-than-life holiday displays, waterfront roller-skating, local vendors, nightly music and top food and drink offerings. Shops at Merrick Park will present its 16th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony with Santa’s Arrival, sponsored by Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, on Thursday, November 21, at 6 p.m. One of the largest tree lighting ceremonies and holiday celebrations in South Florida, the event will include the 50’ tree-lighting, live entertainment, interactive activities, retailer pop-up stations and the highly anticipated appearance by Santa Claus.

The popular event is centered around a majestic 50-foot tree adorned with 55,000 colorful twinkling bulbs. Shops at Merrick Park will transform into a winter wonderland with live performances by the Miami Royal Ballet, Coral Gables High School Choir & Band and Miami Senior High School Marching Band plus greetings from holiday characters, giveaways and more. Shops at Merrick Park retailers will pop-up throughout the garden with special promotions and gifts.

One of the event highlights is Santa’s grand arrival down San Lorenzo Avenue on the Coral Gables Fire Department’s fire truck. Master of Ceremonies Belkys Nerey, award-winning co-anchor of WSVN Channel 7 News, Coral Gables Mayor Raúl Valdés-Fauli a/nd Nicklaus Children’s Health System Interim President and CEO Matthew Love, will flip the magical switch to illuminate the tree, signaling the official start of the holiday shopping season. Shoppers can view and pose with the holiday tree through early January 2020.

Organizers want people to envision a quaint, picture-perfect, holiday outdoor venue filled with twinkling lights against Miami’s downtown skyline and waterfront Biscayne Bay. The picture-perfect, outdoor, holiday venue will be filled with twinkling lights and larger-than-life displays worthy of capturing the moment and posting it on Insta-gram.

“The only thing missing out of this Hallmark-perfect scene will be the frigid snow, but that’s why we invite our neighbors from the north to come here to enjoy Bayfront Holiday Village, Miami-style,” added Albelo.

Every night, a fully decorated, 50-foot state-of-the-art, animated Christmas Tree will feature hourly LED light shows sequenced to three different festive musical shows produced by Grammy-winning producer A.T. Molina.

New York has The Rink at Rockefeller Center, but Miami’s answer to cold-weather ice skating is Bay Skate, where adults and children can boogie to the beat of freestyle, tropical, contemporary pop and more. In the Northeast, peo-ple are ice skating and sipping hot cocoa wearing parkas. In Miami, we roller skate and sip mojitos in shorts. The Shops will offer a collection of 60 artisans in a jovial setting, each offering unique gift ideas to check off the “nice” list! Foodies will delight their senses at Bayfront Bites, where they’ll find seasonal beverages, sweet treats and food ga-lore!

The adventurous will participate in the Gnauhty Gnome Scavenger Hunt as they navigate Bayfront Park using guidebooks with clues to solve this year’s puzzle. Moksha Indian Brasserie, a new Indian restaurant offering a contemporary dining experience in east Fort Lauderdale will host its third and final “Dine & Give” night as a part of its grand opening celebrations. ARTIST

John David Jackson (born November 18, 1977), known professionally as Fabolous, is an American rapper from Brooklyn, New York City. Jackson’s career began when he was a senior in high school and ended up rapping live on American record producer and music executive DJ Clue’s radio show, then on Hot 97. Jackson was subsequently signed by DJ Clue to his label Desert Storm, and later secured a distribution deal with Elektra Records. Fabolous’ first release, Ghetto Fabolous (2001), spawned the hit singles “Can’t Deny It” and “Young’n (Holla Back)”, which led Jackson to prominence. His second release was 2003’s Street Dreams, which was supported by two Top 10 singles “Can’t Let You Go” and “Into You”.

Including the aforementioned songs, Jackson has released a string of hit singles, such as “Trade It All, Pt. 2”, “Breathe”, “Make Me Better”, “Baby Don’t Go”, “Throw It in the Bag” and “You Be Killin’ Em”. He is also known for appearing on several R&B singles, including “Superwoman Pt. II” by Lil’ Mo, “Dip It Low” by Christina Milian, “Shawty Is a 10” by The-Dream, “Addiction” by Ryan Leslie, “I Can’t Hear the Music” by Brutha, “She Got Her Own” by Jamie Foxx, “Say Aah” by Trey Songz, and much more.

In 2004, Jackson signed to Atlantic Records, after leaving Elektra, where he released Real Talk, his first and only album under Atlantic. In 2006, Jackson was let out of his contract with Atlantic and officially signed with Def Jam Recordings. Also in 2006, Jackson founded his own record label, Street Family Records. In 2007, he released From Nothin’ to Somethin’, under Def Jam. In 2009, he would go on to release his fifth album, Loso’s Way. Throughout the years Jackson has released several mixtapes, including several installments of his highly acclaimed There Is No Competition series and The S.O.U.L. Tape series, respectively. He released his sixth album, The Young OG Project, in 2014.

Created in 2009, Slow Burn Theatre Company is a locally based professional theatre company with a mission of providing South Florida’s diverse population with opportunities to experience high quality, challenging, contemporary works of musical theatre through attendance, employment, and/or educational and community outreach programs. It’s 10th anniversary season starts during October 2019 with “Shrek: The Musical.”

The 85-seat indoor restaurant features an extensive menu catering to meat, seafood and vegetarian preferences. Food lovers will delight in small and large plates, soups, salads, live fire specialties, breads and unique fruit and floral essence-infused beverages and desserts. Diners will enjoy their culinary experience in an intimate setting with modern glam eclectic influences.

The restaurant’s signature specialties include Lassoni Gobi, Old Delhi Butter Chicken, Zaffron Lobster and the Moksha Feast. Even non-alcoholic beverages and desserts are a celebration of flavors from the Kokum Sherbat to the Gulab Jamoon.

Moksha Indian Brasserie launched its “Dine & Give” initiative on September 24 with a benefit for Leadership Broward. The third “Dine & Give” evening featuring Moksha’s progressive menu featuring close to 70 South Asian selections comprised of traditional flavors with unexpected twists, will be on Tuesday, October 29, to benefit Stonewall National Museum & Archives.

The 11th annual Fort Lauderdale Edition of the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival is a bi-annual film festival designed to inspire, entertain, educate and encourage a sense of community through international and culturally diverse media that offer historical and contemporary perspectives on the LGBTQ+ experience. Presented by Gilead, Broward County, and Culture Builds Florida, this year’s hotly anticipated film festival will spotlight 33 stirring, contemplative, comedic and creative full-length features plus 18 inventive shorts from 13 countries, panel discussions with filmmakers and talent, and various parties and special events. The festival kicks-off with an October 10 Opening Night showing of the comedy “Adam,” directed by Rhys Ernst, at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Discovery & Science AutoNation® IMAX 3D Theater. This lively coming of age comedy of errors follows a young high-schooler as he navigates life, love and Brooklyn’s young LGBTQ+ community. Producer Circle Members and sponsors will enjoy a 5:30 p.m. pre-event Filmmakers Soirée where they can mix and mingle with many of the festival’s filmmakers followed by the screening. Post-showing, the Opening Night Party will be at Stache (109 SW 2nd Ave, Fort Lauderdale) with cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and entertainment.

Special not-to-be missed films of note, this year, include “Portrait of A Lady on Fire,” directed by Céline Sciamma, nominated for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars next year and Cannes Film Festival Winner Queer Palm, Best LGBT Film, and Winner Best Screenplay
International Cinephile Society Awards, “Song Lang,” directed by Leon Le, a multiple international award winner from Vietnam, “To The Stars,” directed by Martha Stephens, Cinetopia Winner Festival Directors Award and US Narrative Feature, “Everybody Changes (Todos Cambiamos),” directed by Arturo Montenegro of Panama and the East Coast premiere of “El Príncipe (The Prince),” by Sebastián Muñoz, a recent winner of the Queer Lion Award, a collateral award of the 76th Venice International Film Festival.

Offering something for everyone, the festival will host a Ladies’ Spotlight Film and Party featuring “Carmen & Lola” at 7:15 p.m. and after-party at 9:30 p.m. on October 12 and a Men’s Spotlight Film & Party featuring “From Zero to I Love You” at 7:15 p.m. and after-party on October 19.

This year, the OUTshine LGBTQ+ Film Festival Fort Lauderdale is also pleased to host “And Then We Danced,” directed by Levan Akin of Sweden and up for consideration as best international feature for an Academy Award, as its closing film on October 20 at 8 p.m. at Savor Cinema. This uniquely tender and personal film follows talented dancer Merab as he struggles with a forbidden sexual attraction that recalls “Moonlight” and “God’s Own Country.” An afterparty and awards ceremony will follow at Nu River Landing (511 SE 5th Ave, Fort Lauderdale).

An estimated one in eight U.S. women is expected to develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. While these statistics are alarming, individuals and organizations across the nation continue to do their part to fund vital research seeking a cure. This October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale is teaming up with AutoNation, America’s largest automotive retailer, to raise awareness for breast cancer as part of a month-long charitable drive, marked by a new signature event, the Rosé Garden Party on Saturday, October 19, from 8 to 11 p.m. at The Galleria Fort Lauderdale location. Proceeds from the ticketed event, which will feature live entertainment, drink specials and raffles, plus sales from specific drinks all month long, will benefit the Dolphins Cancer Challenge.

Throughout the month of October, Blue Martini Fort Lauderdale will donate $2 for every signature pink cocktail and $2 for every glass of Maison Belle Claire Rosé that is sold to the Dolphins Cancer Challenge. The Dolphins Cancer Challenge (DCC) was founded in 2010 by the Miami Dolphins organization as the signature initiative of the Foundation’s health area. The DCC’s mission is to improve people’s lives through financial support for innovative cancer research at South Florida’s only academic-based cancer center – Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, part of UHealth — the University of Miami Health System. Since its inception, the DCC has raised more than $27.5 million, donating 100 percent of participant-raised funds to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. AutoNation is a proud sponsor of the event.

This month-long effort coincides with AutoNation’s partnership with The Galleria at Fort Lauderdale. Starting October 1, two gigantic pink reindeer will be prominently displayed throughout the entire month on the exterior of the mall to signify National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A pink themed vehicle will be displayed with the reindeer. This partnership underscores AutoNation’s commitment to driving out cancer. Through its DRV PNK Intiative, the company has raised more than $20 million for cancer research and treatment, placing its iconic pink plates on every vehicle it sells and services from coast to coast.

The month-long fundraiser will be marked by the Rosé Garden Party, a festive soiree featuring signature sips and culinary treats, plus raffles for designer giveaways and spa packages from sought-after brands and premier experiences.

Admission for this ticketed event includes entrance, a glass of Rosé or a signature Pink drink and a raffle ticket. Put your pasta making skills to the test with Chef Daniel Roy on September 25th. The Jim and Neesie hosts part two if its pasta making class and dinner series, held every fourth Wednesday of the month through October at 7 PM. Limited to 15 guests per class and dinner, pasta lovers will enjoy a welcome cocktail, passed canapés and a 4-course dinner with wine pairings for just $100++.

While making your pasta, indulge in some small bites, which include Arancini with tomato sauce and mozzarella; Summer Melon with prosciutto di Carpegna; and Burrata Crostini with tomato salad and local bread paired with an Italian inspired drink featuring Campari. For the first course meal of the night, enjoy Snapper Crudo with Sicilian pistachio, Calabrian chili oil and herbs paired with Love Prosecco; Second dish, Ricotta Ravioli with san Marzano tomato sauce, 24-month parmesan and micro basil paired with La flor y La Abeja, Albarino; going into the third course, savor in the Paradelle Pasta with Sebastián inlet clams, smokey clam broth, celery leaf salad and pork belly paired with Buketo, red blend; and for dessert, Panna Cotta with summer melon, citrus crumbs, and micro herbs paired with limoncello and choice of coffee or tea.
