The Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus (FTLGMC) is honoring the 100 years of American Composer Leonard Bernstein and the legacy of Matthew Shepard – a college student who more than two decades ago was the victim of a brutal gay-hate murder – during “A Celebration of Life, Love and Music” performance on Sunday, March 17 at 5 p.m. from the All Saints Episcopal Church in Fort Lauderdale. A portion of show proceeds will benefit the Matthew Shepard Foundation.

While a significant portion of the evening showcases the prolific works of Bernstein, the Chorus is dedicating “Changing Hearts,” a special, six-piece collection, to Shepard and others who have been the victims of gay-hate crimes. The set features songs from some of Bernstein’s renowned Broadway musicals such as West Side Story, On the Town and Candidae. Scenes from The Laramie Project, a play that debuted in 2000 by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project about the reaction of Shepard’s death, are being interspersed with the evening’s musical selections: Tonight; Something’s Coming; One Hand, One Heart; I Can Cook Too and Make Our Garden Grow.

Funding for the Fort Lauderdale Gay Men’s Chorus is provided in part by the Broward County Board of County Commissioners as recommended by the Broward Cultural Council. General admission tickets are $25 and VIP tickets with priority seating are priced at $40, plus a small service fee.

Ever since a young age, Ruben Caban has found great joy and satisfaction in making music and sharing it with fans and people all over the world.

Ruben seeks to offer something different and unique to his fans by creating original compositions that are a fusion of Latin jazz, hard-bop and funk into a sound he can proudly call his own. His ensembles are adjusted to fit the venues and the style which the audience demands. From a fiery Latin Jazz septet or sextet to a sophisticated quintet or an intimate quartet his music is meant to touch the hearts and minds of the listener and even encourage some dance moves with the more rhythm-infused numbers.

In his performance career he has toured, performed, or recorded as a sideman and soloist with an array of internationally renowned artists, for example Frankie Valli, Jon Secada, Ed Calle, Nicole Henry, Dianne Schuur, Randy Brecker, Arturo Sandoval, Ira Sullivan, The Platters, Nestor Torres, The O’Jays, Oscar De Leon, La India, Paquito De Rivera, and more, and is part of Ed Calle’s 2015 Latin Grammy award winning album “Ed Calle Presents Mamblue.”

Mr. McCaslin is rising-star tenor saxophonist propelled to prominence by his Grammy-awarded collaboration with the late David Bowie. He is making his first South Florida appearance with this concert. The three-time Grammy nominee is the leading saxophonist, composer, and musical pioneer of his generation, receiving wide commercial and critical acclaim in jazz, and even rock and electronica circles alike.

Raised in Santa Cruz, California, McCaslin attended Berklee College of Music, where in his senior year he would join NEA Jazz Master Gary Burton’s quintet. Moving to New York in 1991, he quickly made a name for himself as a first-call soloist and touring musician, working with Maria Schneider’s orchestra, Dave Douglas, Danilo Perez, Brian Blade, Gil Evans project, Steps Ahead, and many others. During this period, he also released several albums under his own name while receiving critical awards such as a Chamber Music of America’s New Works Grant in 2006 and DownBeat Critics Poll ‘Rising Star’ category in 2008 and 2009.

Named “one of the hottest jazz tickets in the world” for 2017, recent awards included Best International Jazz Artist at the 2017 Jazz FM Awards in London and the prestigious Paul Ackett Award from the 2017 North Sea Jazz Festival. The Donny McCaslin Group has performed over 80 shows on 5 continents each of the past two seasons in support of his hit recording, Beyond Now.
